This book has been an extremely useful resource for my family. "Food for Thought" and "Recipe for Success" highlight boxes made this book very easy reading to skim through and eye-opening stories about real people made it a book I read from cover to cover. I refer to the corresponding web site regularly. It is a real asset for my family's use of the book's eight-week plan to reduce our weight.

Obesity in America is of epidemic proportions. This fact is easily affirmed with a quick look on a crowded street. Research shows not only are more people overweight or obese, the overweight keep piling on the pounds. Sadly, this phenomenon is not just an adult problem. Written to appeal to parents and caregivers, it sometimes uses over the top scare tactics to get the reader's attention. Although easy to read, the layout is a bit distracting with the pages having sidebars of Recipe For Success, Fifty Ways to SuperSize Your Kids, and/or Food For Thought. Using real life stories to emphasize the subject matter is usually a positive tool used by authors. This book employs too many. Parents who have children struggling with weight want answers and solutions, not necessarily a support group of unknowns. They already know they belong to an ever growing population and if they are reading this book, they are making strides to escape from it. From a clinical viewpoint, this books supplies plenty of facts and figures. What it doesn't do, is make them interesting. With so many other books available with the same subject matter, I suggest looking for another.

A Must Get Book!.......2005-08-27

I was able to read this book before it came out to the public and do the program layed out in the back. I have to say, it is OUTSTANDING! This book was my last resort before giving up all together. My husband, son and I are all way overwieght and have been on the diet rollercoaster for years. I really was scared for my son, being only 6 years old, I felt it was up to me to get things under control. This book is not like anything you will ever read when it comes to diets. It dosent tell you to stop everything and eat just grass! It is laid out to where you do things a little at a time, like the first week all you just reduce the the amount of fast food you would normaly get, along with switching from a large plates to a small one. I am proud to say that by the end of the 8 week, we as a family lost 28 pounds, dont eat red meat, or drink caffeine at all, and have reduced our TV time,weeat as a family and we are much more active! If you want to save your childs life, and the heart ache of being overwieght or you want to improve your own life through better habits, All I can Say is GET THIS BOOK!! It will make a world of difference.

Yes, this book is simple like some of the other reviews wrote, but it is great for during the week with work and being busy with other activities. Also the recipes are good and no left-overs. I love this book!!

This cookbook would be a good buy for someone newly cooking for him or her self - a good gift for a college student. It has a range of easy vegetarian dishes, shopping and vegetable prep tips, and recipes scaled to serve one or two people. It's really a book for the neophyte cook, someone looking to save money, make themselves dinner, and not go to extra trouble or expense.

More experienced folks looking for innovation will likely find it too basic and repetitive. Someone looking for an encyclopedic vegetarian equivalent to "The Joy of Cooking" would do well to seek out Deborah Madison's "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone."

I purchased this book from ... and then returned it. It wasn't that I felt the recipes were bad, just not imaginative. The author spent many pages on very basic things like things to add to a green salad, but nothing seemed all that diferent or inventive. I was hoping for a few more recipes that showed some unique touches and instead got scaled back basics. In the future I will just make 1/2 of my favorite recipes from other vegetarian cookbooks I own.

This book may be good for a new vegetarian or someone trying to become vegetarian since the smaller recipes let you try different things with fewer leftovers (in case you don't like it!), or for someone who entertains and sometimes has a mixture of veg & non-veg guests. It would allow them to make a separate entree for the veg guests.

Since I'm not the greatest cook, I was so excited when I stumbled across this book and found practical recipes that any guy can follow. They are simple and really tasty, with easy-to-follow directions and helpful hints. Plus, the recipes are just the right size for when I'm either eating on my own or entertaining a friend for dinner. This book is a great resource for every kitchen.

In case you're wondering: no, I am not related to the author, but I sincerely believe that this is one of the most effective, accessible, and concise dog training manuals ever written. If you've ever dreamed of having the "perfect" obedient dog, this book will help that dream come true.

I thought that this book was great. We checked it out from the library and my six year old son has chosen the teddy bear party. He was not too thrilled with the bowls of porage cakes, but all the other ideas are great and really get the kids involved.

This is a great book. I only got it yesterday, but it has lots of wonderful ideas. Although this is really a kids do it yourself book, it can also be used by parents, or party planners like myself. It has a pile of themes, and each one includes invitations party hats, crafts decoration, favor and games. Most of the party hats, favors and games are those you can make from paper and other things around the house. Most of the crafts can be used as games, and many can also be used as favors. I always like Kathy Ross's books, but this one was GREAT!

This will be the second Christmas I form a Christmas club with girls. We'll make crafts and read the book. I highly recommend this for girls 1st through 6th grade. I only wish it were still in print.

This book was fun for the mom too! 5 Girls start a Chrismas Club and the reader becomes a member. The main character is Emilie Marie, the author as a girl. She and her friends have all sorts of wonderful ideas they want to do during the Christmas season. This wonderful book tells of their club activities and gives you all the instructions so you can do all the fun things too! You have instructions to make an Advent Calendar, Activity Chain, Candy Advent, Cards, Grammie's Spiced Cider, PBJ People, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Spicy Old-Fashioned Pomander and lots, lots more! The girls share Traditions from their families with each other. I [the mom] enjoyed reading this book.. it brought back wonderful memories and I look forward to sharing the book and activities with my two daughters.

Blah...........2006-09-20

I was SO excited to order this book, based on the outstanding reviews here on Amazon. I love books about how to make the most of family life, fun things to do with your kids, how to deepen your ties with your kids, etc. etc. -- you get the drift. SO, naturally this title appealed to me.

Imagine my disappointment when, for the first time in.....well, a long time....I could NOT finish the book. Couldn't make myself. Atrocious writing. Very "New Agey" type philosophy presented that has that weird tone (to me, at least); they used ALL CAPS a lot for things like 'HONORING THE CHILD WITHIN' (Okay I made that up, b/c I gave away the book very quickly and I can't remember specifics...but it was definitely THAT kind of new age psycho-babble).

I'm sure this review will get just shredded by people, LOL. However, I thought I'd send out a warning to all of you parents who are NOT into that semi-snotty, put the child on a pedestal and worship them, new-agey kind of parenting advice.

For those with more traditional tastes, do read "What is a Family?" by Edith Schaeffer.

Simple Profound Truths.......2006-08-09

In my forties and pregnant for the first time. Therefore, have been very actively studying parenting philosophies over the past 8 months, both in theory and in practice. I've noticed that the people who's parenting I most admire and who seem the most successful to me, are the ones who are following the ideas from two books:

1. "Living Joyfully with Children" by the Sweets
2. "Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves" by Naomi Aldort.

I have been devouring these books! If you believe that parenting is (or will be) a spiritual journey with profound learning about life and about yourself, these are the best two books I have found. They are filled with both theory and practical application. Furthermore, if you are having a daughter, I highly recommend Christiane Northrup's book "Mother-Daughter Wisdom".

For nuts and bolts information and child development guidance, I recommend any of the Sears books, but you probably already know that.

One of the Best Parenting Books Out There.......2004-09-24

This is probably the best parenting book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. They bring out in the open a lot of ideas that I've felt about parenting and what I aspire to as a parent. Raising my child in a way that will honor who she is and nurture her to the best of my ability has always been my goal. The Sweet's give you steps and tips to achieve this goal especially when you're feeling overwhelmed with everything "out there" that can get in the way of your parenting plan.

I just hope they can put together an audio book so I can get my husband, a non-reader, to "read" it.

I've only read the book once so far, but plan to read it again, and again when I need some help.

a tribute.......2003-10-21

sculptor. architect. child prodigy... Bernini's real name was Michaelangelo, but he hid the fact so that his own work would stand apart from that of the greatest sculptor of all time. Here is a tribute to a man who fufilled a great potential to create beauty in this world. The Galleria Borghese in Rome will attest to this. A wonderful volume about a truly incredible talent.

Wittkower has created a book that is easily enjoyable for those familiar of Bernini, or those starting to learn about art/archetecture of the Baroque. I highly reccommend this book to anyone remotely interested in this period, as the photos are clear and the explanations are not filled with jargon a lay person could not understand. bravo.

A Must For Bernini Scholars.......2000-09-06

Wittkower's work is simply stated an artistic anthology of the achievements and life of the chief architect of the Roman Baroque. His perseptive commentary and pertinent factual information are extremely useful to all who attempt to comprehend the complex messages behind all of Bernini's work. While the author stays committed to rendering the artist as a sculptor and architect, one wishes that Wittkower would delve more into the environment, particularly political and religious movements, that continually serve as an impetus and background to Bernini's chef d'oeuvres. Regardless, Wittkower's inclusion of both color and detailed black and white plates allow the viewer to observe the Baroque master's works in their appropriate light.

Reconsidering the terminology art historians use to describe 17th-century Roman sculpture, this history examines how famous artists, such as Bernini, Alessandro Algardi, François Duquesnoy, and lesser-known artists influenced one another during this period. Roman baroque sculpture is usually thought of in terms of large-scale statues in marble and bronze, tombs, or portrait busts. Smaller bronze statuettes are overlooked, and the extensive production of sculptural silver--much of which is now lost but can be studied from drawings--is omitted from the histories of art. In these lectures, Jennifer Montagu enriches our understanding of the sculpture of the period by investigating these works in metal: the bronzes that adorn the great tabernacles, which are a prominent feature of Roman churches; the often gilded silver, both secular and ecclesiastical; and elaborately embossed display dishes. She also looks at the production of medals, an essential aspect of metal sculpture that is usually confined to specialist literature.

The book concentrates on selected pieces by such master sculptors as Bernini, and leading metal-workers such as Giovanni Giardini. Making extensive use of archival documents and drawings, Montagu examines the often tortuous relationship between the patrons and the artists and elucidates the relationship between those who provided the drawings or models and the craftsmen who executed the finished sculptures. In this way she provides insights into the procedures of the workshops, and at the same time opens our eyes to a new and fascinating area of sculpture.

The horrors of the holocaust and the strength survivors had to conjure every second to endure, is beautifully captured by Lucie Adelsberger. Her documentation of the events leading up to Jewish deportation is artful in its simplicity, as each action taken by the Nazis builds upon the last with fatal consequences. This amazing book then takes the reader within the walls of Auschwitz and in exquisite detail invokes the memories of those who were lost as well as those who survived with unflinching honesty. This account documents the strength of the human spirit, and is one that should not be missed.

beauty and monstrosity.......2003-10-29

Lucie Adelsberger's memoir of surviving Auschwitz, opens with a description of life in Berlin in 1938. "It began with only a few so called 'trifles,' " she says, citing three incidents which leapt out of the maelstrom of edicts and indignities to confront her with the relentless cruelty of the regime. The first of these limited Jews to public benches marked for them, thereby denying the elderly, many already displaced from their homes, the solace of parks. The second occurred when her elderly mother smiled at a functionary who processed her emigration papers. The official screamed at her mother for her effrontery.
"That's when I realized that these people were beyond the reach of human kindness," says Adelsberger. The third was the denial, after months of wrangling, of her mother's exit visa by the host country. Adelsberger realized finally that "the outside world didn't want to get involved."

Adelsberger missed her last chance to flee when her mother fell sick. As round-ups of Jews accelerated she found herself praying her mother would die before the SS came for her. Those prayers were answered but her own ordeal surpassed her worst imaginings.

In unadorned prose Adelsberger recounts life and the varieties of death at Auschwitz. Her voice is gentle, her eye sharp and compassionate, quick to note small ironies as well as gratuitous kindness and cruelty.

As a doctor, Adelsberger was assigned to the gypsy camp where an epidemic of typhus was raging. There were no medicines and hundreds died daily in their own filth. Why the camp commanders bothered with a hospital at all is a mystery which can be inadequately answered only by the Nazi passion for order.

Meticulous records were kept of everyone. One of the camp's most grueling rituals was the daily roll call. With 25 to 35,000 inmates in the women's camp alone, with the camp's policy of moving inmates from one section to another without notice, and with hundreds dying enroute to forced labor or hidden in a corner of their block, an exact roll call was difficult to achieve. Twice a day, before dawn and after work, inmates stood for roll call. This encompassed everyone except the dead and lasted one to two hours ý unless the tally did not match. "A roll call that lasted a day and a night without interruption was nothing unusual."

Roll call, the unexplained withholding of food from already starving people, forced labor, these were routine. Then there were the days that stood out. Sunday in the gypsy camp when gymnasts and musicians put on a show (the Gypsies were allowed to keep their possessions) and an audience of 16,000 sang and danced to music which ended abruptly with an order for "block confinement." After hours of waiting ý and the Gypsies know what they're waiting for ý the SS appear, calling out names and numbers. That night 2,500 Czech Gypsies were sent to the gas chambers.

Adelsberger also tells of strategies for survival, although she says no one expected to leave the camp alive. But certain work details ý the kitchen, the bathhouse where prisoners were stripped of their last possessions, the band, were coveted. Barter and communication systems were devised despite the dangers of detection.

But the vast majority worked in the mills or munitions factories or the potato bunker. Or they dug graves. The worst was reserved for young, healthy Jewish men. Totally isolated from the rest of the camp, they worked in the crematorium. After two or three months they too were gassed. "Sometime while at work, one never knew when, the valves of the gas chamber would close, the gas would be turned on, and ý a new Sonderkommando would replace the old."

A heart-rending memoir, yes, but it speaks as much for the beauties and strength of the human heart as for the incomprehensible monstrousness of the experience.

One of the only Holocaust books on a women, a great read.......1999-02-23

I loved this book, and I couldn't put it down. Great read about the Holocaust. Very chilling to see how the women in the death camps, especially Auschwitz were treated. The font is for 6th Graders, but I feel that it souldn't be read, for the graphic nature, until high school.

A very good read.
