From a Stretcher Handle: The World War One Journal and Poems of Private Frank Walker

Frank Walker was 20 years old when "the War to end wars" began in 1914. He enlisted with the Canadian Field Ambulance, Canadian Medical Corps, and served as a stretcher bearer in some of the worst battles of the war, including Ypres, Vimy Ridge, the Somme, and Passchendaele. During that time he kept a journal, which charted his gradual transformation from military innocent to war-weary veteran. He also wrote a collection of poems, which was published in England during the war. Upon his return to Charlottetown in 1919, he went on to become one of the Charlottetown Guardian's most respected newpaper editors. He retired in 1969 and died in 1977. Edited with a preface by his daughter, Mary Gaudet, From a Stretcher Handle includes the journal and the poems, as well as an essay by island historian Boyde Beck, which places the journal within the context of the Canadian Medical Service on the Western Front. As time passes by and more and more people lose sight of the horrors of war, works such as From a Stretcher Handle serve as raw and powerful reminders of what so many fought and died for. At the same time, Walker's words set Prince Edward Island firmly in the canon of First World War literature.

This Book Saved My Life.......2002-06-13

It may seem trite to say but this book literally saved my life. After doing tons of research and making many telephone calls, this was the ONLY resource about addiction that covered the topic honestly, compassionately and COMPLETELY. It provided me with the clear, unbiased information I needed about addiction and recovery and helped me make an informed choice about treatment.

It was clear to me from the start that the authors have a very open minded approach, non-judgemental approach to addiction treatment that is unusual and very refreshing. They make it clear that there is no one "correct" way to deal with addiction. Instead they explore the pros and cons of all available treatment methods so that each reader can decide for him or herself, which course of action is appropriate.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels that they, a loved one or a friend might have an addiction problem and to anyone who wants honest, up to date information based on scientific research. The authors include many examples of real people (including themselves) which makes this book easy to read and relate to.

Dr. Volpicelli throws out a life line for me.......2000-11-20

This book has changed my life. I knew I needed help, but didn't really know what kind, where to go, who to see, etc. Dr. Volpicelli paves the way for anyone who has an addiction by presenting options that you might never know existed...options that might be right for you. If you think you need help with drug or alcohol abuse, GET THIS BOOK! He offers almost 100 different websites, books, resources etc. in an appendix that is detailed and comprehensive. Dr. Volpicelli and Maia Szalavitz present information and options to the reader with respect and dignity. The book is written in a way where you feel YOU have the ability to choose the treatment that would be right for you. They tell you how to choose treatment that would best match your needs, what criteria to look for, and what to expect as part of your recovery. I think that was the scariest part for me before I read this book...the fear of the unknown. After reading the book, and rereading certain chapters, I felt armed with the knowledge I needed to take that first step. If you're having a love/hate affair with an addiction, and want to get a grip, get this book. It may change your life. Forum) -- The 23 chapters and more than 300 pages of this new book by Joseph Volpicelli, MD, PhD and Maia Szalavitz provide a complete overview of psychoactive drugs of abuse and their effects, an in-depth look at the many ways to view alcoholism and other drug addictions, and a review of addiction treatment research, modalities, and pharmacotherapies.

Experienced addiction treatment staff at all levels will find this book to be an excellent review, along with some interesting updated perspectives. It definitely should be required reading for new staff members and trainees.

Volpicelli, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and senior research scientist at the University of Pennsylvania Addiction Treatment Research Center, was an initial investigator of naltrexone for the treatment of alcoholism. However, his outlook in this book is extremely well-balanced, without lobbying for any particular treatment approach as a "one size fits all" solution. In fact, the "Penn Paradigm," which he advocates, stresses that "it is what the patient considers important, not what the treatment program is pushing, that matters."

Szalavitz, an experienced and well-known journalist specializing in health, science, and drug policy, is savvy to the real world concerns and fears of patients and their loved ones. Her philosophy of treating addiction is "if it helps people, do it," and the underlying posture of the entire book is, "Patients given a menu of treatment options do significantly better than those who are simply told what to do."

Case studies and anecdotes, used liberally throughout, vividly illustrate important principles in the book and make for very interesting reading to hold one's interest. The book is obviously well researched and evidence based, although we would have preferred a more thorough referencing of the sources used.

Then again, the primary audience isn't researchers or healthcare professionals, as denoted by the book's subtitle: How You and Your Loved Ones Can Understand and Treat Alcohol and Other Drug Problems. Volpicelli writes that "to get the best care, patients themselves need to know what to look for -- because many professionals have too much of an attachment to their own ideas of what should work to take into account individual differences."

While that statement might perturb some professionals, most will agree with the authors that educated consumers of addiction treatment make the best patients. The one caveat is that this first-of-its-kind book exploring all treatment options may be challenging reading for some persons and getting the most from it would require a commitment to take more responsibility for one's own treatment success. It may not be for everyone but, as suggested earlier, one size needn't fit all; but this book could help many people.

It's great to have straight talk about the whole range of recovery options available from one source, with a minimum of axe-grinding. People struggling with addictions and their friends and families will find this an invaluable resource. Personally I'm a bit more positive about 12 step and more skeptical of some of the alternatives than the authors, but what's important is that they're all in here and the authors make a serious attempt to evaluate them objectively. We all know someone who needs this book!

Dr Volpicelli and Maia have put together a wonderful book, full of sound advice and unbiased information. Great for addicts, health-care workers, and just as importantly, friends and relatives of people with substance abuse problems. An absolute "must".

Looking for authentic recipes? Yes, this is the right one and covers a wide range of Japanese cuisine like appretizers, soup, sashimi, yakitori, tempura, tofu, sushi, noodles, pot dishes, and even box meal. All recipes come with detailed and easy-to-follow instructions, large & beautiful photo pictures, and some delightful illustrations for showing the preparation steps. In addition, it covers some tips on using various ingredients like bonito stock, mirin, miso paste, wasabi, and ginger, etc. Very practical. Yet, if you're more interested in cooking methods, secrets, and techniques, you should go for one of the author's book by Shizuo Tsuji, "Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art", which is also the well-known bible in Japanese cooking.

P. J. C. expands the novice Japanese cooks horizons from "sushi only" to a more complete Japanese cuisine experience. The recipes are clear and ingredients listed are by and large available. While this is certainly not a Japanese cooking "bible" it certainly serves as an excellent jumping off point for those new to Japanese cooking.

Foundation Piecer .......2007-01-07

After looking for foundation piecing patterns for an Arctic animal quilt, I found Margaret Rolfe's incredible books which had exactly what I was looking for. Her patterns result in beautiful, detailed animals with a lot of character. The only problem I had was trying to scan the blocks into my computer to print them on foundation piecing material. I was so excited when I found the Animal Kingdom CD-Rom, which has patterns for most of the animals found in her books. Now I can easily print out what I want to make, saving me a lot of time. The added details make these animals come alive. In addition to bears and a delightful moose, there are many that I did not expect to find, including a puffin, several birds, owls, foxes, deer, a walrus, geese, and a sea lion. She also has patterns for dinosaurs, dogs, cats, farm animals, Australian animals, and exotic birds and animals. The CD-Rom has greatly enhanced the use of my Margaret Rolfe collection.

Paper piecing.......2005-01-30

After reading so many of the reviews that criticized this CD-ROM for printing out pieces that had to be cut apart, adding a 1/4" seam allowance, I thought I needed to say that these patterns are intended for paper piecing. In case you are not familiar with this, you sew directly on the paper, then pull the paper off the fabric when the square is complete. This will give you fantastically pointy corners and a beautiful design, with EASE!!! Even my 10-year-old child is able to paper-piece beautiful quilt pieces!!!

Animal Kingdom is a CD inside a full-color cardboard sleeve. There are 2 pictures of a dolphin project on the sleeve, and several color photographs of blocks on the front "cover". The rest of the projects are shown strictly by a small color line drawing.

I can't say that I'm very impressed with this CD at all. The patterns are definitely cute, although a lot of the design features come from embroidery, and not from piecing the features in. I haven't tried printing any patterns yet because our printer is hooked up to the other computer, and apparently I can't save any patterns onto a floppy. Not impressed.

The patterns should have had the seam allowance included, and the multi-piece patterns should print that way - we should NOT have to cut the pattern apart after printing, and add seam allowance. There should have been WAY more color photographs of the patterns, and suggestions for projects - theres lots of room on a CD for these things. Instead of having an index with all the blocks listed (whereby you could pick which one you want to work with) - you get to figure out which section your block falls into alphabetically:
Australian Magpie - Butterfly ... Camel - Cow ... etc. etc. etc.
I have to say - that is one ODD "index". There are some excellent instructions on the CD, but you have to choose from 3 instruction categories, and then use arrows to get to your page - you can't directly access the page you want. Again - this is
is an extremely odd and inefficient way to do things.

If this CD is the "new wave" of crafting books, then it either needs a LOT of work, or else its going to go the way of Beta video recorders. The *concept* of a book on a CD is a good one, but the product - in this particular case - needs a lot of work.

Moderately useful.......2002-07-07

This software includes all the patterns from _The Quilter's Ark_, pluse some new patterns, including DINOSAURS for your little boy! (So many quilts look feminine that this is a bonus!)

However, I am getting indifferent results on my computer. It takes forever for the patterns to print, and some, like the flying eagle, will not print at all.

I have no problem with the limited sizes, but I do wish that the author had broken the patterns down into sections and included the standard 1/4 inch seam allowances for each one.

Lazy publication, Disappointed.......2002-04-16

You buy a program that will print paper pieced creatures, then you learn once you start printing that WHOA! this author didn't even bother to make the printout user friendly!!! She chose to limit the sizes of the blocks but for crying out loud there is PLENTY of room on an 8x11.5 sheet of printer paper to break down the patterns so I don't have to cut, add on boarders, etc etc.
This author requires an editor that quilts and won't let such over sights go to press.

Fascinating book, highly recommended.......2007-10-07

The archives of the inquisition have been preserved in Mexico, including detailed testimony recounting actual conversations. The book reads like a novel but it's history. Cohen must have been truly obsessed in order to do the research and write such a book. It's a compelling read.
