Customer Reviews:
Ho Hum.......2007-03-16
Lowndes seems to be dealing with a different age group than my own -- the post-menopausal woman whose value on the marriage market has limited trade value. A pedestrian version of what interpersonal communication and psychology researchers refer to as social exchange theory, the book offers practical advice for developing the social skills and contacts that will propel one into circles more moneyed than the ones in which one currently circulates. The dust jacket flap asks, "Do you crave someone creative, interesting and maybe famous," but I couldn't find any particular examples about penetrating artistic, musical or bohemian co-cultures. Maybe my eyes fell shut first, and I missed it.
good premise, horrid outcome.......2006-12-10
The title of this book should read: "A BIBLE FOR THE DESPERATE SHALLOW SOCIAL CLIMBER." And since Ms. Lowndes doesn't bother with political/ethical or any kind of correctness, I'm surprised that the title says otherwise. This book would have been a lot wiser if it just said : Do not pick your mate out of desperation, but first, strive for happiness and better things in life. THEN pick a good mate who is like you and therefore would be compatible with you." AND THAT IS IT. But no, she had to go into the whole issue of class, which she got COMPLETELY wrong. I have NEWS for you, Ms. Lowndes, it is only shallow self-gratifying rich people who believe in class, nowadays. A lot of people with very humble origins have a LOT OF CLASS, as you call it. Class is not money, class is not FAKING or being rich, class is NOT gas stoves and parquet floors. You are sadly mistaken and you're broadcasting this nonsense for all to hear.
Having class means possessing certain qualities irregardless of the bank account balance. And I'm most certainly sure that a classy person doesn't divide people into frogs and leagues. If you can't do, teach... eh? I especially appreciated the end of the book, where Ms. Lowndes warns about the dangers of being a high-class faker, but then promises to pray for those who chose do go down that road anyway. That's just precious!
Positive and funny at times!.......2006-10-28
This book is not only published by the best publisher that is the best academic publisher out their. But unlike most self help books it focuses more on the you can do it attitude rather then you screwed up now lets fix it or someone else did (like your ex) and you need to realize it.This Is a best selling author for a reason folks! And although some of the info in this book isn't brain surgery to already know for those who need reminding/verification in a humorous way this certainly is! This author rocks even if her knowledge isn't all accurate occasionally or hard to already obtain without this book.
Everyone should get this book.......2006-07-18
If it weren't for this book I wouldn't have met the guy of my dreams who is way out of my league :D I even quit stalking celebs 'cause he is so much hotter. Thank you for selling this great book!!! :D
UpDating: How to Date Out of Your League.......2006-06-30
Author of How To Make Anyone Fall in Love with You, Leil Lowndes, writes this book in an informative style. She repeats many ideas from the first book. While there are a few things to learn from this book, I was looking for more depth.

Customer Reviews:
Not nearly as good as their first book.......2004-04-10
I liked the first Electric Bread cookbook much better. Most of the recipes in this one were too "unusual" for me and the recipes haven't caught my interest enough for me to even want to try most of them. It does have a extensive section of recipes you can make using the dough cycle. If you like to use your bread machine's dough cycle for handshaped breads & baked goods, then you will probably enjoy this book --but if you're mainly interested in baking loaves of bread, I'd skip this book.
More Electric Bread.......2004-03-08
Continued great recipes from the premiere bread machine test kitchen. If recipes are followed carefully, the results can be assured, unlike other similar books. Great confidence in the recipes, trouble shooting and related features can be had by all who use this book, as with all excellent books in this series from Nightingale and team.
We have used their books to make well over 1200 loaves of bread with 10 different bread machines and except for our own mistake on one occasion (we forgot to add yeast), all loaves came out well, even most "picture perfect." This includes the lighter white breads, wheat breads, darker and heavier pumpernickle and rye, fruit and specialty breads.
We have numerous bread machine books but this series is the best we have ever seen and have ever used. I am not sure why we have other bread machine books since none are used any longer, only the "Electric Bread" series by Nightingale and team.
Greatly recommend this volume and any other volume of "Electric Bread" by Nightingale and team.
Excellent Book.......2000-07-21
I owned and loved Electric Bread for several years before I got this book as a gift. It is as good as the first Electric Bread, maybe even better. I use these two bread machine cookbooks almost to the exclusion of all others. All the recipes I've tried are great, and the bread always comes out perfect. The cinnamon rolls in the back of the book (with wonderful variations) are to die for -- my husband and son beg me to make these!
Tasty, easy-to-follow recipes - excellent resource!.......1998-09-03
Just when I thought I had the best resource around in "Electric Bread", the I.C.E. Staff has provided even more tasty, virtually foolproof recipes. Everything I try comes out perfect. I actually bake bagels every week now, and the hamburger buns are incredible. Thanks to this easy-to-use book, my bread machine has again become my favorite appliance. I look forward to more recipes from this talented group. Do yourself a favor and buy "More Electric Bread."

The art and science of breeding top dogs is made immensely easier by the introduction of this new and fascinating book. Believe it or not, this ine tops it. Now with a new comprehensive index and a non-stop bibliography, this is a book you can not afford to be without.
Customer Reviews:
Good technical/medical info, pls ignore the in/line-breeding.......2003-02-08
The book is excellent with regard to the technical aspects and considerations of health and whelping, but ignore the author's advice regarding genetic principles of inbreeding and line-breeding.
Do so only if you are an experienced breeder, and are intimately familiar with your line and what traits reappear time and time again in your dogs. Many undesireable traits are tied to the desirable ones. The other reviewer who cautioned disaster has a valid, informed point!
Great book with excellent content.......2001-03-22
Dr. Grossman writes a very thorough book that is filled with good content. Many things that we know but need to be reminded and many things that are new (at least to me). Really enjoyed reading his work. Helped focus my objectives on how to begin a successful breeding/showing program.
A blueprint for disaster.......2001-03-11
This book tells you how to use inbreeding and linebreeding, and it teaches you the basics of Mendelian genetics, but these help to manage one or two traits at a time.
The problem is that genes don't assort one trait at a time! Genes are linked to chromosomes. While we were all busy inbreeding and linebreeding to 'fix' the desirable traits of breed type and conformation, something else happened, and now we are producing a steady increase in unwanted traits that we call genetic defects.
Time magazine has an interesting article on this problem...
The underlying advice is undisputable.......1998-07-29
I particularly recommend the thorough reading and appreciation of the first chapter. Those who have sufficient experience will appreciate and endorse the many points which are made upon the early stages of ownership and the requirements of breeding.
Everthing you wanted to know about breeding.......1998-07-29
A practical no-nonsense approach to dog breeding is the prime focus of this very readable book. Dr. Grossman writes for the novice and advanced breeder as well, spotlighting possible pitfalls and providing guidance...In short, everything you wanted to know about breeding a winner but were afraid to ask.

This is a must-have book for fans of classic pubs and NYC.......1999-10-07
I bought this book back in 1975 and used it regularly to find fascinating watering holes like the now defunct Harvey's Chelsea restaurant (what I wouldn't give right now for one of Sterling's Margarita's) and Village classic Chumleys. Despite the age, with a little detective work, this book can still provide some real "finds" for friends of the grape. Yeadon's drawings alone are worth the price of admission.

Customer Reviews:
Most helpful book.......2002-06-04
This is probably the most helpful, useful book I have ever read related to losing weight and maintaining the loss. I have read SO many books on dieting and on exercise but this is the one book that really prepares you mentally for obstacles that you might face and gives you strategies to help you cope. The author covers everything from eating in social situations to self-sabotage to dealing with saboteurs that you encounter in friends, co-workers and even family. She gives helpful stratgies for keeping your motivation going. I have highlighted the heck out of the book and copied many of the tables Joyce Nash provides for tracking success, nutritional intake, and eating behavior patterns. I would love for all of my friends to read this book but there is NO WAY I am going to loan mine out! If you want to lose weight safely and SANELY, help yourself out and buy this book!
Good advice for practical people.......1998-03-03
The New Maximize Your Body Potential offers sound advice for anyone thinking of a weight loss, including journal assignments and other nontraditional approaches to long term goal setting. Reading this book will help you not only get motivated for a regular exercise program, it will also help you manage stress and think about your eating in whole new ways. The book might benefit from more personal examples or personal stories but as a weight management primer, you will get results as you begin to internalize its message. For those of you looking for an alternative to Oprah's Make the Connection, give this book a try.

Book Description
Alfred Waterhouse was one of the most successful British architects of the second half of the nineteenth century. Following the passion for gothic espoused by Pugin and Ruskin, he developed his own highly individual "modern" gothic, but could turn his hand to other styles with equal
confidence. He accepted up-to-date methods of building and revelled in modern materials such as terracotta. His efficient office appealed to businessmen and institutions for whom he built extensively but he was also an accomplished artist of the picturesque. An architect of wide ability he has
left us a handful of major buildings of rare genius such as the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall. He has also left his mark on towns and cities all over Britain with schools, colleges, hospitals, banks, and offices as well as a selection of churches and almost 90 houses. This book
details Waterhouse's long and successful career and demonstrates his importance for all those with an interest in the nineteenth century.

Along with millions of lives, the Holocaust stripped away the official records and family mementos that anchor personal histories. In 1989, after both the opening of Czechoslovakia to the outside world and the death of her mother Frances, a concentration-camp survivor, journalist Helen Epstein made her first tentative efforts to uncover her own history. Armed only with a 12-page letter written by her mother, she retraced family footsteps from the provincial town of Brtnice to Vienna, where her great-grandmother Josephine had killed herself in despair. In Prague, her spirited grandmother Pepi, who had been orphaned at age 8 and left in poverty, rose from those ashes to run a fashionable dressmaking salon. Pepi married a man who repudiated Judaism so completely that their daughter Frances learned of her background only as the Nazis rose to power. Epstein's meticulous research beautifully conjures the drama of their lives and times, carving out the surrounding culture until these three women stand against it in stark relief.
Book Description
Helen Epstein's compassionate tribute to her family, Where She Came From, combines a moving ancestral history with the scrupulously researched fate of Eastern European Jews. The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Epstein began her project after her mother's death, with only the stories of her family to guide her. For a period of over twelve years, the author traveled to Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Israel, and like an archaeologist with shards of data, pieced together her story of three generations of women. Through the traditional women's art of sewing, Epstein symbolically traces the lives of these women, affirming that "we think back through our mothers if we are women."
Customer Reviews:
We should ALL know where we came from so well..........2006-09-04
In WHERE SHE CAME FROM, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based award-winning author Helen Epstein has penned a meticulously-researched memoir to the four generations of Czech and former Czechoslovak women in her extensive family, from her mother's side of the brood.
While today she associates her public persona to the proud and extensive line of former Czechoslovak Epsteins (see Ms. Epstein's fabulous Amazon Short available off of this site, SWIMMING AGAINST STEREOTYPE: The Story of a Twentieth Century Jewish Athlete), the writer stakes her claim to a noble and illustrious family line which once proudly sported famous Viennese and Prague-based surnames such as Rabinek, Solar, Weigert, Sachsel, Furcht, and Frucht.
Like an experienced batsman for a World Series-winning major-league baseball team, Epstein managed to hang in that old batter's box, waiting for just the right pitch to slug out of the ballpark. In the book world, the analogue was when all the right moments fortuitously transpired to assist Ms. Epstein in securing many essential clues of research which she utilized handily in crafting this excellent book's narrative. Even she'll tell you, the process was far from easy.
Thanks to a dedicated coterie of like-minded collaborators based in points all around the globe as you'll soon read (the former Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic, Israel, South America, and the United States), Ms. Epstein succeeded in cobbling together one of the most comprehensive Czech geneological histories on the public record.
The work is not only emotionally remunerative for Ms. Epstein, to the extent that those missing links in her family chain were finally sewn together, but it's additionally a fine account of several strong women, renowned in their various fields of endeavour, who persevered during the best of times and the absolute horrorific worst of the 20th century.
Starting with Helen's great-grandmother Therese Sachsel, nee Frucht (Furcht), who lived during the reign of Franz-Josef in the last of the Habsburg-ian thrones, passing through her grandmother Pepi's life story during the turbulent First World War and the First Czechoslovak Republic, and finally overlapping the history of her own mother Frances Epstein, Helen pored over hundreds (if not thousands) of archival sources in constructing this cogent tale.
Collectively, these three noble upstanding women belonging to the author's colourful past outlived the worst of the 20th century's ravages, passing fads, and tragic downfalls.
We swoon with Therese Sachsel during the euphoria of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk's (TGM) storied first Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938), when all seemed possible for the Central European remant of the former Austria-Hungarian powerhouses of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and Slovakia. Our hopes and dreams are temporarily crushed alongside her grandmother Pepi Rabinek as we witness the invasion and subsequent occupation of Prague by Nazi hordes, who sweep unchallenged through the former Czechoslovakia's borders after the West's perfidy of Munich. We agonize alongside Pepi's daughter, Frances Solar/Rabinek/Epstein, the paragon of the family and Helen's stalwart mother, as she is dispatched to the Teresienstadt (in modern-day Terezin, Czech Republic) concentration camp, or in the colloquial Czech, the "koncentrak." We also rejoice when Frances is extricated from the hellhole of Auschwitz, and tranported the West in wartime Germany as part of a labour brigade, towards the oncoming Allies from the West, liberated in Bergen-Belsen by British forces at the end of WWII. Finally, we are shocked to discover the insensitivity, sheer apathy, and in many instances -- outright hostility -- that Praguers demonstrated towards the surviving returnees from the Nazi camps, to which Frances and her future husband, famous former Czechoslovak Olympian swimmer, Kurt Epstein, counted themselves.
Helen Epstein's lines draw us inexorably into this story, and once you start you'll have a difficult time finding excuses to stop.
What staggered me as I made my way through this read was Ms. Epstein's formidable discipline. The sheer single-mindedness with which she approached the colossal task of the near-vertical climb to reach the bottom of her family's history. I read with awe how solace was found towards the end.
WHERE SHE CAME FROM will stand as one of the foremost examples of the self-researched memoir. If you need any reason at all to read this book, then let it be thanks to the iron-willed determination which the answers gracing its pages were unearthed by Ms. Epstein.
A book like this needs to be savoured for its significance, appreciated for its illumination, and respected for its purity. There isn't a single letter which graces these pages that wasn't typed, written, or transcribed in the absence of a labour which can only be termed love.
I sit back and wish we all had the staying power of Ms. Epstein. The book is laudatory in the extreme.
As if Ms. Epstein's family history were not enough, there are other benefits to this book too. For those with a keen interest in the past two centuries of life in Prague and the experiences of Bohemia's and Moravia's Jews and its Czech peasantry, WHERE SHE CAME FROM is chock-a-block with painstaking factoids and historical tidbits that'll nudge you gently towards further reading. It will also supply its readers with a glimpse towards the increasingly-distant Czechoslovak past, which, with the passing of the years and the keener integration of this country with the rest of the EU, slips further and further away from the grip of Czech youth.
This book is more than just a reminder, it's a testament to a time which no longer exists. In that respect, it is now part of the permanent historical record.
WHERE SHE CAME FROM is written in a language at once accessible and magnetic. For all ages, for all backgrounds. I can't do anything less than award this superb work of history my highest rating of 5-stars.
I know you will too.
-- ADM in Prague
A Wonderful Book for College Classes.......2006-06-23
Beautifully written, WHERE SHE CAME FROM is also the product of very serious and exhaustive research. It is a magical and haunting book. It brings alive a period of Jewish women's history that is only now being written about in English. Travelling through pre-Holocaust Central Europe with Epstein is an amazing experience: the reader follows both the process of investigation of family history and the emotions this opens up for the writer.
I taught the book several times both in the US and Mexico in classes on Memory and Autobiography. My students loved the book. Many of them bought several copies to give to relatives and friends as gifts. My graduate students (in History and Literature) were impressed by the rigor of Epstein's research, and the skill with which she weaves historical information into her prose.
A Wonderful Read.......2006-06-12
This is a fascinating chronicle of three generations of the author's female ancestors. It is probably the only book in English that tells the story of Jewish women in Prague in the the first half of the twentieth century. Helen Epstein has a special talent for recreating social history and bringing it alive.
Beautiful Personal Tribute.......2006-03-29
This book was a beautiful personal tribute to the author's ancestors.
I was engrossed in this book from the first page...although it was a slow read for me, because I wanted to grasp the intensity of the generational saga, and grasp the historical facts, correctly. Epstein has more than proved herself in this dramatic memoir of family generations, identity, and history, weaving us through time, each piece of family fabric a part of the final tapestry. The reader is given remnants and squares of fabric in a familial tapestry, of sorts, through history and time, through the horrors of war, and how it affects all the generations, from past to present. From assimilating into society and racial and religous identity, to how one views themselves and what they identify with, Epstein manages to stitch a tapestry of her family, each stitch in time adding to the fabric of her own identity. Bravo for a wonderful read!
Amazing personal story!!!!!!!.......2004-01-17
Although this book has a slow start with a lot of historical information, once you get to the Holocaust section, you will not be able to put this book down. I read it while in Vienna and after I visited Prague. I felt so connected to my surroundings and the author that I literally felt like I was in the book. Makes the enormity of the Holocaust personal and understandable. A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!
