Greatest Generation Anecdotes.......2003-01-26
After reading Charles Day's excerpt posted on the Xlibris website it is clear that he has crafter a sound and cohesive collection of interesting WW II anecdotes.
Greatest Generation Anecdotes.......2003-01-26
The book is different in that it tells much of the irony rather than of the hell of war. Much of the work is in the form of anecdotes, epigrams and like episodes in the context of the WW II era. It reads as though it is by somebody who lived and knows what he's writing about, serving as a court reporter and with the Army Field Historical Section in WW II in Ireland England, Wales, Scotland, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
In its own way it reminded a little of "Tales Of The South Pacific."

Customer Reviews:
A very good reference book, but not a reading book or textbook.......2007-08-31
This book is everything the Booklist review states: excellent selection of individuals, a number of appendicies that provide valuable cross-tabulation information, and the most thorough time-line of mathematics I have seen (35 pages). It is a respectable reference book for students and the general public with reading skills of grade 9 or higher. The mathematics content is accessible to persons with intermediate algebra or higher.
The unfortunate drawback of this book is that the biographies are in alphabetical order. The publishing company missed a valuable opportunity: if instead published in order of mathematical developments (semi-chronological) with some bridging material, the book could be both an "armchair" reading book for the general public and a textbook for courses in liberal arts mathematics, mathematics history, etc. Given the excellent cross-tabulations in the appendices, an electronic edition would also be highly valuable.
A minor issue with the book is that the biographies have been slightly sanitized so as to be palatable with high school libraries in the U.S. At the same time, the authors struck a balance by being very forthcoming about the lives and fates of persons. For example, the entry on Pythagorous is excellent for a high-school reference book.
This book can be found in public libraries throughout the U.S. and at many high-school and college libraries as well.
Other books to consider:
Victor Katz has published A History of Mathematics: An Introduction (2nd Edition) which is suitable for an upper-division mathematics-major course in math history. Highly recommended to teachers and students researching the development of mathematics.
Tobias Dantzig's Number: The Language of Science which would be better subtitled "the vocabulary of measurement", is accessible to any successful college sophomore. It gives a somewhat chronological account of the human development of number concepts. Highly recommended to anyone interested in number concepts.

A Caregiver's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease: 300 Tips for Making Life Easier
ASIN: 0764538993 |
Book Description
An estimated 4 million people are living with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in America today, with approximately 370,000 new cases diagnosed every year. AD patients live anywhere from 5 to 20 years after their diagnosis; and their inability to care for themselves grows more dramatic as the disease progresses, creating profound implications for their families and healthcare providers. Its impact on families during the caregiving years is overwhelming.
If you have a family member or close friend who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and you’re looking for current, useful information, then Alzheimer’s For Dummies is for you. This reference guide also is helpful if you
- Need to know more about its diagnosis and treatment
- Want to take care of yourself while taking care of your loved one
- Are not the primary caregiver but want to know how to help
- Want to know how Alzheimer’s Disease is going to affect you and your loved one
Alzheimer’s For Dummies takes a realistic look at Alzheimer’s Disease, what it is and what it isn’t. It offers pertinent, easy-to-understand advice for dealing with the myriad concerns and responsibilities that a primary caregiver must assume when managing an Alzheimer’s patient. Here’s a sampling of the information you’ll find in this valuable guide:
- Maneuvering through medical, legal, and financial tangles
- Distinguishing AD from other brain diseases and medical conditions
- Handling the fears that may accompany the diagnosis
- Evaluating current drug therapies; watching out for scams and quack treatments
- Finding the best doctors; dealing with attorneys and CPAs
- Looking at Medicare regulations
- Evaluating the cost of care
- The current state of research, diagnosis, and treatment
Television personality Leeza Gibbons, whose mother was stricken with AD, writes in the foreword of this book, “There is no upside to keeping your head in the sand. This book is a crucial step in your new fight. Arm yourself with the knowledge waiting for you in these pages. It will help you find answers and resources as you adjust to your new reality.”
Customer Reviews:
Beyond the front cover..........2004-06-29
...lies a pleathora of easily accessible and directly useful information for the AD caregiver. What is not contained on the pages is supplied by weblinks and addresses for helpful groups and associations. The best advice often comes from those who have walked the walk and the author here is no exception. Kudos to the author for her bravery and much gratefulness for the gift to us all from the author and her mother.
A good addition to a collection of Alzheimer's books.......2003-12-18
Alzheimer's for Dummies does a good job in presenting the information relating to care giving and decision making for families of Alzheimer's patients.
During my mother's bout with Alzheimer's, I looked for resources that would give me clear understanding and answers of what was happening now and what was going to happen down the road. This book is one of several that I have on the subject. It does not make light of the disease or the issues being faced, but does present good information in a way that is understandable and clear.
Good information.......2003-12-18
As an adult child of an Alzheimer's patient searching for as much information as I can about Alzheimer's disease, I find most books to have very little of the humor I desperately need to find to help me cope as the disease progresses. As a person who is living through the progressive loss of a loved one to this disease, I don't find this book to be insensitive or belittling, but refreshing and honest. I have shared this book with other family members and we have all found it helpful.
Don't judge a book by its cover..........2003-12-15
I am the author of this book. I lost my beloved mother and my aunt and another relative to Alzheimer's, so in addition to being an experienced medical writer, I have had heart-wrenching personal experience with this devastating disease.
I argued about the title when I was asked to write this book, but eventually the folks at Wiley convinced me that since the Dummies brand is so ubiquitous that people would understand and not take offense. And yet you have taken offense without reading a single word of the book, or knowing anything about the year of research and interviewing I put in to make the book the very best it could be and the easiest to understand.
During the writing of this book, I also had to confront all my own buried sorrows and heartbreak about my mother's illness and death, so the entire process was fairly torturous. Yet, I persevered because I believed in the book and hoped it could serve to spread the message about the importance of early intervention and appropriate use of medication for people with AD.
The Alzheimer's Association is absolutely wonderful and they do an incredible job; we are blessed with a terrific branch staffed with warm and caring people here in Houston. But not every city or town in America is fortunate enough to have a branch nearby; I wrote this book to help people who don't have ready access to support services and who are struggling with medical, legal and finacial issues as well as the emotional problems and family strain that caring for an Alzheimer's patient can bring.
If you had read the book and then said you didn't like it would be one thing. But to judge a book by its cover not only brings the old cliche roaring to vibrant new life but also denigrates the love, care, research and hard work that all three authors put into this book.
Patricia B. Smith
Title of this book.......2003-12-09
This book may have excellent and easy-to-understand contents about Alzheimer's. However, the title is somewhat belittling and insensitive to the patient and to the family. Yes, having worked with Alzheimer patients and families, I would say so. I would NOT recommend this book to them. Perhaps to the general public is okay......but then, should they not also go to Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) and their local chapters throughout the country for general information and resources??

One of the best tea books around.......2007-07-19
This book is great. I own several tea books and this is one of my favorites. The recipes I've tried have all been delicious. This book is also a good read and inspirational to invite friends over for tea and good food.
not really what i wanted.......2007-03-22
i was kind of disappointed in this book. the format was really neat, but i thought i would really love it and it was just okay. there weren't any recipes that sounded good to me or contained nuts to which i am allergic. i returned this book - it just wasn't for me.
tea-time at the inn.......2007-03-15
I love this book, it's one of my favorite. all the stories about the inns make me feel like spending my weekends there. all the photographs are lovely too. I can't get enough reading every chapter and can't wait to try out the recipes.

One of my favorites.......2004-05-28
I collect cookbooks and I love to host afternoon tea parties, so this book was right up my alley. It has probably the most extensive collection of recipes of any tea book I own.
Every recipe I have tried in this has turned out great, scones, mock devonshire cream, whoopie pies (oh my! they are delicious!),mini eclairs, strawberry puffs, chicken salad, cheese spread. I could go on and on, Ive had this book for years and I use it all the time. I not only use it when I have tea but also for finger foods at dinner parties.
If you are looking for a book with many different recipes and menus than get this one. The recipes are easy to follow, great tasting and you'll never run out of ideas.

What's w/the Cat Training Advice?!.......2003-08-29
"My Cat's Tale" is largely a journal for your feline, with room for a few photos as well. It has lined pages on which you can record your cat's milestones, such as "Memorable Firsts" and "Favorite Memories".
I would have given "My Cat's Tale" 5 stars - except that the book's author sprinkled little "pointers" throughout the journal. Some pages are completely filled with advice so that they're essentially wasted - my solution was to affix large photos onto these pages and cover up the text completely. Ms. Glantz seems to be confused as to what a "journal" is - it IS a place for the individual to compose personalized entries. It ISN'T a training book. If I had wanted "tips", I would have bought a book on animal training.
Otherwise, "My Cat's Tale" is one of the better companion animal journals I've found. It has cute, appealing sketches and a nice color palate. It isn't too "busy", but it's still attractive to look at. The pages are large enough for two standard-sized photos (there are about a dozen pages set aside for pictures, but I ended up putting many more in, over the author's text). It's probably most useful for someone who's just adopted a kitten, as some of the journal entries focus on kitten-specific milestones (e.g., kitty's first...). Many of the entries can be filled in at any stage in your cat's life, though.
The canine version of "My Cat's Tale" is "My Dog's Tale", also by Lorie Glantz. The format is identical.
"My Cat's Tale" is nice journal, but, sadly enough...it COULD have been a GREAT journal!
My Cat's Tale.......2003-07-28
This book is excellent. I love the idea of keeping all of my cat's favorite moments in hands reach. I had so much fun filling out this book and I continue to add new things to it. I loved putting my cat's paw prints in it. Now I am buying one for my other kitten.
Book Description
Ready, Set, Knit gives the many new knitters all the basics and beyond plus hip projects, in a cool stand-up format. The knitting craze continues, and new knitters take up the needles all the time. Ready, Set, Knit gives beginners everything they'll ever need to know plus fun, fresh, fast-to-finish projects. Each project introduces a new skill, so the book can be used as a complete course in learning to knit. The projects are the quick and creative accessories that knitters crave. The book's unique format stands up, putting the open page at eye level so learners can easily refer to the how-to photos and patterns.
Customer Reviews:
Looks are Deceiving.......2006-12-31
I purchased this book as a brand new knitter looking to learn from a book. I was attracted to it because of the cover art, the fact that the book can be freestanding, and the beautiful photographs of the stitches inside. I also liked the look of the designs of the patterns. I won't say this is a horrible book, because it does have some good qualities, but it is not for beginners, as it does not provide detailed explanation in most of the patterns. I also found some errors in some of the patterns, which I thought were on my part, but I went to a knitting store and asked the owner and she said it was not my error, but the book's. The sock pattern, in particular, will make a sock, but with a very awkward feel and fit. I think these patterns are much more suited to the intermediate knitter who can catch an error before it is too late. That being said, I do wish more pattern books were free standing like this one--it made life easier.
C- effort, lots of issues learning with this book.......2006-10-10
As a new knitter attempting to teach myself, I thought this book would help me become proficient in no time. Boy, was I wrong! Granted, I'm only on the first project, but I feel I'm lucky to be squeeking even the essentials out of this poorly-written book. Some of the instructions (even illustrated) are unclear and confusing, and I was completely lost on the selvage information, which was not illustrated; they actually used a selvage skill in the first project! I gave up that part of the instructions after about 10 rows - it was impossible to see what I was doing and it made absolutely no sense.
The first project was a scarf - ideal for new knitters, but she has you using "chunky" yarn and no. 17 (HUGE, FAT) needles, which were awkward to use at first and the chunky yarn made it difficult for me to really see what I was doing. Some of the other projects are just plain DORKY - no one I know would be caught dead wearing that fringed top!
The "stand-up" feature is impractical; the pages aren't even properly set up in the instruction part of the book to allow one to stand the book up and merely turn it around - half the pages are upside-down! I would rather have had a regularly bound and set up book than this halfway effort.
While I will keep this book and likely refer to it occasionally, I would not recommend it to anyone. I've ordered "Instant Expert: Knitting," which a friend recommended, so I hope that will be better. As for this book, I'd skip it. Not worth the cover price; maybe worth buying at a really cheap used book store, but that's about it.
Great book for beginner or even moderate knitter.......2006-09-29
I would probably give 4.5 stars if possible...I really like this book overall. I agree that it's not likely that anyone would like all of the patterns in here (especially the fringe top!), but I think there is something for everyone. I have made the "flaps or no flaps" hat (no flaps for me), the tote bag, and the slouch socks. There are several other patterns I plan to try eventually.
But what I really love are the instructional parts of the book. If you're a total beginnger, it's a great thing to work your way through the techniques from beginning to end. If you're a little more advanced, it's a handy reference. I have pulled it off the shelf several times to look up a pattern abbreviation, check a diagram of a technique, etc. The large numbers of sample stitches (different open work patterns, cable patterns, textured patterns, etc.) are also a great reference if you're interested in designing your own pattern. It has made me braver as a moderate knitter--I never would have guessed I would try making my own patterns before I bought this book!
Good beginning knitting course.......2005-04-06
This book looked ideal for my needs (rank beginner) when browsing in our local knitting store, so I bought it. It's turned out to be a mixed bag, but I'm still glad I bought it and I'm still using it as my primary knitting course to teach myself to knit.
The target audience is rank beginners, as you would guess from the title. It is not intended as a reference book for more advanced knitters.
Where this book excels is its selection of topics and the order of the topics. Other knitting books will bog you down with umpteen variations on a subject when you'd be better advised to move on to the next basic topic. Ms. Kagan picks the appropriate topics to concentrate on and presents them in an appropriate order for learning them. The basic topics include casting on (first row), knitting, purling, binding off (last row), gauge (picking the appropriate size needles), correcting mistakes, increasing and decreasing the size of rows so you're not limited to knitting rectangles, and reading typical project instructions. From there, she moves on to assembling the finished item (blocking, pressing, seams); textured, raised, and cable patterns; yarn embroidery - a simple way to add color before you're ready to tackle knitting multi-colored patterns; stripes; multi-colored patterns; using circular and double-pointed needles; and decorative openwork (various lace shawl patterns).
The book is attractively laid out and copiously illustrated, inviting you to dive in and explore. That's unless you're a man or boy curious about knitting, in which case you'll have a hard time getting past the pink cover and feminine look of the book.
The down side is that the instructions could be clearer. On getting it home and actually sitting down to read it, I couldn't at first understand what she was saying. However, with knitting needles in hand, concentrating on learning just one technique at a time, and picking a technique I'm reasonably ready to learn, I can usually figure it out. If you're left-handed (I'm not), good luck - it has one paragraph for you. The instructions are clearer in the "I Taught Myself Knitting" booklet co-produced by Lion Brand yarn and Boye (equipment manufacturer), a surprisingly good booklet that comes in kits with various starter assortments of equipment.
Another strength of this book is that it intersperses projects between lessons. The projects don't happen to be my style or anything I happen to have any use for, for the most part, or maybe that's just due to first impressions and color choices, but they're good both for practicing and for better understanding the techniques just learned. The more sensible projects include scarves, hats, sweaters, an embroidered pillow, throw (red hearts?? maybe I'll try it with green shamrocks instead), leg warmers, slouch socks, fingerless gloves, poncho, and a nice lace shawl.
In summary, if you're a rank beginner, this book can give you the knowledge and confidence to tackle any reasonably normal knitting project, however you may need to supplement it with another book or ask for help from someone who knows how to knit.
Lots of techniques, projects not the best.......2004-12-29
When I first looked at this book, I was struck by the good instructions that the author gives on various types of cables and other pattern stitches. I think that this book is a good book to own if you want to learn a lot of pattern stitches, but the patterns themselves do not really appeal to me. The candy stripe leg warmers and the cable hats are cute, but those are about the only ones I feel particularly attracted to. The fringe top is really ugly, too--just thought you might want a warning...
Bottom line: It's not worth the list price, but if you can find a good deal, then it's a nice book to have in your knitting library.

Book Description
Myotonic dystrophy is part of the group of muscular dystrophies. It is the commonest inherited muscular dystrophy and has a profound effect on individuals who are diagnosed with the disease and their families. It is present for many decades of a patient's life and has many attendant implications. Unlike the other dystrophies, it also affects other organs in the body, making this a very distinctive disorder, and a very troubling one for those close to it. This is the first book to be written for sufferers of this disorder. Written by the world authority on Myotonic dystrophy, Peter Harper, the book covers a wide range of aspects of the disease, explaining in simple terms exactly what the condition is, what the symptoms are and how they can or might develop. Self education is encouraged and this book gives anyone interested the tools with which to find out more and empower themselves by taking an active role in their own treatment. Most importantly it carries the message that there is hope, something can be done, even if there is, as yet, no actual cure. Anyone affected by this disorder will find this book a great source of hope and strength.
