Best book out of 3 that I bought.......2004-04-05

I bought 3 books when I was diagnosed with Gestational diabetes: 101 tips for Healthy Pregnancy w/ Gestational diabetes, Gestational Diabetes: what to Expect & this one. This one was the best I thought. It had a real food guide (my main questions were how do I control my diabetes with diet), the others just wouldn't come out & say "eat this" "don't eat that". Plus the author writes to the women with the diabetes, very direct & personable. I am giving this book to my midwife so she can share it with her patients instead of just Gestational Diabetes: What to Expect.

Good food guide.......2000-12-04

When you have Gestational Diabetes, you are basically going to find all your information from your Doctor and Diabetic Counseling, there really isn't any one book that tells you anything more than you already know. I thought this books Chapter 5 on Food, Food, Food was helpful. It allowed me to make up my own menus following their guidelines on what to eat. It was pretty much the same guidelines I got from my nutritionist but my nutrionist never gave me as many choices. I would recommend this book to someone with Gestational Diabetes, because of that chapter, and it does give the same information as your Doctor.

The book does not give you any more information than your diabetic counselor will. There is more filler in this book that is unrelated to gestational diabetes. There also is some contradiction in it as well. Don't buy it.

Excellent Summary !.......1999-07-22

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 29 weeks of pregnancy. My initial feelings included fear of the unknown. My doctor had sent me to see a nutritionist to discuss my diet. I found myself overwhelmed and afraid after my initial visit with the nutritionist. I found this book to be an informative guide to gestational diabetes and the risks associated with it. I feel more in control by further educating myself with the help of this wonderful book.

I was upset to learn I had gestational diabetes, but this book is very reassuring and informative. Dr.Peterson is complete in her explinations and guidelines. It followed very closely with my OBs recommendations. I have referred to for comfort several times since purchase. I would recommend this book, especially if it is the only one you buy.

Easy to understand. Great reading. I would like to have some pictures of the recipes and preparations, but the book is very good.

As a sailor, I find it very, very useful. Dehydrated food is a very handy way to store food if you go cruising for some days, or even for some weeks.

I have been drying foods and making jerky for over 30 years; but now, after reading May Bell's cookbook, I consider myself a rank amateur around my food dryer. What a wonderful insight into the possibilities that I did not know existed.

I have several books on the subject, but this is truly the bible for those wishing to save energy, cost and space by replacing a lot of what they normally use their canners and freezers for with the versitile dryer.

This is a good basic book to get you started. It is not all hard to understand and makes dehydrating very simple. If you are looking for complete book on dehydrating, this may not be for you. I'd suggest How To Dry Foods for that. But if you want a simple, basic book--this is a good one.

I was given "The Dehydrator Cookbook (Nitty Gritty Cookbooks)" as a gift with my dehydrator. I flipped through it once and it has been on a shelf since.

Most of the book is regular recipes that use dehydrated versions of the basics (fruits and veges). It has a couple of pages about jerky and fruit leathers. If you are dehydrating to save the bumper crop from the garden, this may be what you want. However if you are dehydrating for backpacking/camping etc, these are definately are not trail-ready recipes.

The book doesnt have more than a few pages about what to dehydrate, and how to do it. It does have a nice table about how long different foods should take to dry, but it turns out that the listed times are significantly longer than my dehydrator takes so it is of no use to me.

I have found much more useful info at various 'net resources.

Way too basic.......2002-08-31

I just got a sparkling new Excalibur dehydrator and purchased this book for innovative ideas on how to use it. The book contained little more than the instruction book that came with the machine. There are no illustrations, which would have been useful. Most of the recipes are not ones I would use. For example, the recipe given to use tomatoes is "Lamb Stew."

I wish I had purchased a book with more text, more ideas, and some pictures, since I am totally new to dehydrating. Disappointing.

Finally, an easy to follow guide to food dehydrators.......2001-06-08

Like many Americans, I received an electric food dehydrator as a Christmas gift last year and had great expectations. After 2 disasterous attempts to dry tomatoes and oranges, my machine went back in the box on a shelf in the garage, until I read this book.

This book is cleverly written, easy to follow and has some really good guidelines for using your dehydrator. Not only does the author tell you how to properly dry and candy foods, but she includes recipes for using those foods. There is a section on storing the dried foods and even suggestions on drying non-food items like flowers.

My food dehydrator is now back in the kitchen and getting regular use, thanks to this little book!

Great Lakes Wildlife.......2003-07-20

This is not a BOOK but a fold over, laminated pamplet. Contains a page on invertebrates pictures, 2 pages on fishes, 1 page on reptiles and amphibians, 3 on birds and 3 on mammals. The scientific name and the size of the animal is all the information that is listed. I was expecting some descripton that would help distinguish an organism from other similar ones. I was surprised that neither the carp nor the alewife was included.

Full of stories and substance.......2001-10-10

I have had more than one bout of clinical depression in my life, and I find that the way I feel so isolated from others is one of the hardest things to deal with. When I saw this book I liked the concept, and what I found was that the many different stories from women who deal with depression were a great help. It's not always easy to find other women who are willing to discuss this issue with you, so it was a real relief to read their words on the page.
The author writes well and I appreciated the way she took on the various sides of depression and today's treatments, like the drugs and the therapies, as a journalist would--objectively.
Also, the book is smallish, which means just right in size for someone who's depressed and might not be able to concentrate all that well.
I highly recommend it.

Fra Angelico.......2002-03-21

This is what an art book should be, page after page of splendid reproductions, including several full page details of Fra Angelico's greatest works. I was able to spend one day in San Marco, 2 years ago, I was alone most of the morning, but by noon had to contend with hoards of tourists pushing their way to get their 3 second glimsp of each fresco. Looking at these wonderful reproductions, I am reminded of the originals, I am able to see details I could not see peering through the entrances to the monks' rooms, and to recall many details had just forgotten. The text, devoted to the illuminating the art, included a wonderful explaination of composition and perspective.

Brenda Miller is amazing. This is the first compilation of her's I've read, and I couldn't help but be impressed.
Sometimes the subject matter is semi-mature (birthing, intermarital relations), so some careful selection of age group appropriateness is suggested.
Miller's prose is touching and well written. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs motivation to write, someone to connect with, or just a good read.

Elegant Memoir.......2005-01-15

There is a compelling sensitivity within each sentence of this collection of essays, as Brenda Miller claims her territory on the planet, while at the same time, offers to share her sensory awakenings with the reader. "Before I lived at Orr Hot Springs, I spent a summer baking bread for fifty children on a farm outside Willits. I didn't know I was in practice for becoming a massage therapist, but I knew I mended wounds buried deep inside me as I handled the huge mounds of dough" (89).
The author has a great knack for physical descriptions that resonate with strands of a deeper, spiritual quest.
Highly recommended for anyone in the midst of life-transition, healing from loss, or seeking a closer intimacy with the realm of touch, the ways that earth touches us, the way we touch earth and each other. Healing, inspiring.

Peter Guttman's visionary photographs of the holiday season and his heartfelt captions in his new book, "Christmas in America," grabbed me with the power of a passionate virtuoso. The most difficult task an artist can face is to reconfigure and reintroduce the imagery of a well known topic such as Christmas in a way that we understand once again why this holiday is so special. By portraying people from sea to shining sea as they revel during the month of December, by candidly capturing the countless ways we celebrate our love, compassion and appreciation for each other as we come closer to the end of yet another year show what a sensitive and an insightful photographer Peter Guttman is. His words are equally compelling and illuminating. I'm a professor in English and teaching literature in college, but I have never read such a beautiful, eloquent and inspiring portrayal of Christmas and its history of celebration all through the ages, on different continents and in America. A Harvest of Relections continues the "journey" with themes tied to nature, love and life beyong death. We learn more about the author's relationship with his mother and more about how love never dies. This book offered me more comfort as I reflected on the death of my own mother. This book warmed my heart and would be the perfect gift book for just about everyone on my list, in that it covers so much different territory. Rarely do I like the follow up effort by an author more than the first. I loved My Garden Visits by Matott, but I think I loved this even more!

Justin's connection with human nature, mother nature and the earth takes you on an incredible journey. He shows us that in spite of our shortcomings, we can reinvent ourselves. He helps us see the true gifts in life; family, friends and the earth. As a gardener, you will feel compelled to plant each one of the plants he mentions.

I enjoyed reading Harvest of Reflections so much! I wanted to know the people Justin Matott talks about in the book, more about them. Mainly, the book makes you realize what is truly important in life. So inspiring to read!
