Book Description
Fibromyalgia, with its constant severe muscle pain, relentless fatigue, disturbed sleep, and feelings of depression, is regularly misdiagnosed and misunderstood, yet it is the most common arthritis-related disease next to osteoarthritis. While some feel these symptoms are part of growing older, fibromyalgia is not a sign of aging. In this newly revised edition of his popular handbook, Dr. Harris H. McIlwain offers hope to millions of sufferers. His proven seven-step treatment program includes the very latest in such medications as Cox-2 Inhibitors, the breakthrough drugs that reduce pain and inflammation without stomach upset, and guaifenesin, a common ingredient in cough and cold medications that may lessen the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The program also has specific exercises to reduce deep muscle pain, to increase strength and energy, and to alleviate stress and anxiety. McIlwain tells what alternative approaches are safe to supplement his own treatment program, and offers an expanded discussion of complementary therapies that may be of benefit, such as homeopathy, chiropractic, aromatherapy, nutritional therapy, and herbal therapy. With McIlwain's program, fibromyalgia sufferers can manage the symptoms of the disease, reverse its progression in most cases, and improve the quality of their lives.

This book has alot for me to be able to refer to & is so easy to understand,...It is so great to be able to turn to a chapter & find
many treatment options to be able to try,...like for instance the one that I hadn't even thought of,...was moist heat,...something that simple,...or a heated swimming pool,..(which some of us do not have),..but I do however have a spa tub,...which will really help me
on a regular basis,....I want to suggest to anyone suffering as I am,..& so many of us are,,...with this horrible,....pain,..just check this book out,..you won't be sorry,..I know I am not,...LH
Amazing they all love the other books by THE SAME AUTHOR.......2005-03-03
I find it very amazing that if you click on the "See my all reviews" box that these same people also highly recommend all the other books by the same author? WOW imagine that! Type in the names Harris H. McIlwain and Debra Fulghum Bruce in a search engine and see the 100 other books these people have in print. They sound like the experts for every sickness and illness known to man.
There is some good advice, but nothing new here, snake-oil at best like so many books on the market.
Very detailed and presents surprising new findings.......2004-02-21
If you have fibromyalgia, this book can change your life, as it did mine. The breakthrough medical information was highly interesting. The authors also presented surprising new findings on which foods and exercise programs actually decrease pain and inflammation--and which ones increase pain. The natural therapies presented by Dr. McIlwain were also revealing with 5-HTP and SAM-e having been found to resolve pain and depression and help aid in getting sound sleep.
It was very helpful to me to hear I was not alone with these vague but high intrusive symptoms of FMS. I recommend this book to anyone with this syndrome.
My wife said THANK YOU for this book.......2004-02-19
I bought this book for my wife who has had FMS for 4 years. I wanted her to get relief and it seemed like no medication was working. She used to be so active but the past few years have been hard on all of us as she tires easily and has constant muscle pain. The book helped my wife!!! Not only did she learn about the various causes of FMS, she found relief with the exercises and lifestyle approach to treatment. My wife even made an appointment with the author (MCILWAIN) and saw him last month in his Tampa Florida office. He confirmed the diagnosis and helped her understand the program even better. She now is taking only one medication and does the exercises daily. She is managing her time better and not over extending herself. These are simple steps to take to get your life back--and they work. I recommend. WE RECOMMEND!
Book Description
From Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church, one of the most esteemed centers of African American spirituality in the country, comes Food for the Soul–a compilation of more than one hundred recipes, and the many stories behind them shared by its congregation. Since its founding in 1808, Abyssinian has been a major social and religious voice of black Americans. The oldest African American church in New York State, it is a cultural melting-pot ministry with members from throughout the African diaspora–and a history of cooking reflecting that diversity.
Yet beyond the great recipes for dishes such as Bahamian Seafood Cobbler, Soulful Chicken Stir-Fry, Whipping Cream Biscuits, and Mama Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie lies a rich and textured account of how the church incorporates the creation and enjoyment of food and the care of the physical body into its love for and devotion to God and humankind. Brimming with updated, healthy renditions of favorite old dishes, Food for the Soul is also illustrated throughout with beautiful photographs.
Woven through the book are stories associated with the recipes that are full of life–humorous, moving, joyful. From a churchgoer who started making spicy chili in the sixties as the South Bronx burned (Chef J’s 5-Alarm South Bronx Chili) to another who still re-creates the one-pot dinner that was the only meat dish her large and poor family could afford each week (Booba’s Saturday Night Special One-Pot Meal), these anecdotes and recipes come from the heart and provide deep sustenance to the body and soul.
The Abyssinian Baptist Church is the second oldest African American church in the United States and will celebrate its two hundredth anniversary in 2008. Abyssinian has members from Kenya, Jamaica, the United States, Ireland, Brazil, the Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, the Bahamas, Cuba, Honduras, Panama, England, Egypt, South Africa, Grenada, Trinidad, Holland, Japan, and Nigeria.

Inspirational and Enjoyable.......2007-03-30
Inspired by their senior pastor's warning that "far too many black people are digging their graves with their teeth," the congregation of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, one of the oldest African-American churches in the country, has pulled together a slew of delectable recipes that will give new meaning to the words "soul food." With contributions from renowned restaurants like Sylvia's, Londel's and Brian Washington-Palmer's Native, "Food for the Soul" also entertains with stories about the church serving the local community.
A beautiful book that is both inspirational and enjoyable.
Awesome! Don't miss this one!.......2005-10-14
I *love* this cookbook. It is gorgeous (with many full color photos), and the recipes are clearly written to ensure success. This is a famous Harlem church, and contains many wonderful stories and anecdotes. But be assured that the book will appeal to anyone with taste buds, regardless of race. (I'm caucasian, and love it).
There are many recipes from Carole Darden Lloyd, whose wonderful Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. And you'll find recipes from names you'll recognize and admire, as well as those you won't know, but who are sensational cooks generously sharing their treasured dishes. Most contributors described why their recipes are so wonderful -- and the church carefully tested them.
Don't miss this one! It is truly outstanding.

Dissapointing.......1999-02-23
While the book certainly contained a vast listing of places you could stay, it doesn't seem to contain many places you would want to plan a vacation around such as a cute country inn or B & B. I was dissapointed although it is certainly a useful reference if you need to travel with your pet and want to stay at an ordinary motel
Excellent source of by name hotels/motels that except pets........1999-02-04
This is an excellent resource of by name hotels and motels across the country that are happy to allow your pets to stay in the room with you. It has thousands of specific hotels by city and state, and includes phone numbers. We keep it in the car on trips, and simply use our car phone to make resevations at the next town we plan on staying. It has so many individual listings as well as nationwide chains, that we have never been unable to find a close place to stay.

Book Description
Gerry Albarelli's TEACHA! STORIES FROM A YESHIVA chronicls a year in the life of a non-Jewish teacher and his students at a wild Hasidic yeshiva in Brooklyn.
Customer Reviews:
What kind of job is this for a nice Italian boy?.......2004-12-01
What kind of name is Albarelli for a nice Jewish boy? Of course, it's not - and that's the point of this book. Albarelli, a non-Jew, taught for 5 years at a Hasidic yeshiva in Brooklyn. This is the story of that experience.
I was really disappointed in this book. Stories of a goy teaching at a Hasidic yeshiva should be interesting! But Albarelli is all "me, me, me". He seems to have no interest in his students. (For instance, at one point, he is trying to teach the about slavery in the U.S. and the story of Harriet Tubman, but with little success. It seems never to have occurred to him to link that story with the Passover story!)
He fails to give any background. The book begins with his answering a newspaper ad for an English teacher at a yeshiva. He describes the rabbi saying "Based on your background, I think you'll work out here. To be honest with you, public school teachers don't work out here." Yet we are never told what Albarelli's background is, why he chose to answer this ad, nothing.
To bracket this, at the end of the book, he says that he talked to his students about becoming a Jew (since it comes completely out of the blue, it's not credible). One student says "You not become a Jew". Albarelli says, "Do you know that?" and the student responds, "Okay, come to my house tonight." This is never explained. Did he go? What is the connection that the student makes between Albarelli's expressed interest in conversion and what goes on at the student's home? Tell us!
Albarelli describes the students as rude, noisy, inattentive, etc., but then says things improved, and notes that prospective teachers were sent to observe his class. Yet he never explains how he achieved a relationship with his students, nor does he discuss the cultural norms that would allow boys who live in a very strict environment to behave towards their teachers the way they did. More important, he doesn't seem to care. It makes me wonder why he stayed for five years.
There is too much left out here. Frankly, I thing Albarelli was trying too hard to be "literary", and too little to actually tell a story.
Great writing!.......2003-02-12
The author of Teacha! does an admirable job of evoking a world unknown to most of us in a way that is thoughtful and respectful. Mr Albarelli's writing is spare yet filled with wistful imagery. His book gives glimpses into this rather closed society with anecdotes that will stay with you long after you are finished. This is a book to savor. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
A gentle view by a gentle gentile.......2002-12-17
This book could only have been written by a non-Jew, and I say this with great appreciation. A Jewish writer would have either defended or more like disparaged the subject. Gerry Alberelli, has crafted an interesting and insightful look into the black hat world of orthodox Jews. He tells us of a world that few know of and teaches us about it without ever being pendantic or judgemental.
I liked this book, it was a joy to read and a joy to share. It's beauty lies in its simplicity. I reccomend it to anyone who wants to travel to far off places, next door.
this is the most adorable book eva........2002-07-26
i highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about little hasidic boys crawling up the walls:
'teacha, i'm a janitor fixing the pipes!" one boy tells albarelli, from his perch on top of a closet.
his discriptions of brooklyn and the hasidim are unforgettable and humanistic...also great for learning how to say 'up yours' to your teacha in yiddish ;)
One teacher's baptism by fire (to mix a metaphor...).......2002-02-12
This book reminded me of another book about a teacher who was plunged into the chaos of an inner-city school, namely, "Dangerous Minds." The writing format is different ("Dangerous Minds" is a novel, this is a memoir) but the experiences are similar. Here is this new teacher, hired to teach English in a school where the culture and the kids are so totally different from what he is used to, that, as the rabbi who hired him says, "Think of it this way, you're going to Mars."
In this case, teacher Gerry Albarelli is hired to teach English in a Brooklyn yeshiva run by one of the most conservative of the Hasidic sects. (He never says which one, but, judging from various clues in the story, my guess would be Satmar.) Here, English is a second language and the boys are not the least bit interested in learning it. Everyone in their insular community speaks Yiddish anyway, and even the principal's English leaves much to be desired. Add to this the bewildering (to Albarelli, at least) world of Hasidic life and its rules. The experience becomes, if I may badly mix a metaphor, a true "baptism by fire."
The school days are long, from 6AM to 6PM -- the Hasidic world's solution to the daycare shortage. Religious classes are in the morning when the boys are rested. English classes? They come at the end of the day, when the kids are all bouncing off the walls with pent-up energy. The boys consider secular subjects to be time for recess -- and their classroom behavior shows it! It doesn't help that the stories in the textbooks are about suburban middle-class Gentile families whose lives have nothing to do with the Brooklyn world that these boys live in.
Eventually, Albarelli wins the respect of his students through storytelling and acting out little plays that they make up in class, in order to practice their English. He never becomes a Hasid (or even a Jew) but does learn enough about the culture to begin to understand and respect it. After five years, however, he moves on to another position, leaving behind forever the chaos and exhuberance of the boys in this school "on Mars."
My first reaction, upon reading this book, was embarrassment. Would it give a bad impression of Hasidism to the public? Then I remembered some of my own experiences as an Orthodox Jew teaching in the public schools in rural Minnesota. I, too, have had my share of spitballs, paper airplanes, flying pencils, kids who won't stay in their seats or even listen to what I say -- not to mention plenty of cross-cultural ignorance. (If I ever write my own equivalent of "Teacha!" it will be called "Why Do you Wear that Little Hat?") Albarelli's students regard him as less than a "real man" because he has no beard or sidecurls; my students consider me a wimp because I don't play sports. The rules may be different, but kids are all on the same basic search for identity and belonging. More than anything, Albarelli's book demonstrates that students are students everywhere. These boys may be Hasidim, but they are also kids growing up in the inner city. Anybody who has ever taught in a less-than-perfect school (And tell me, what school is perfect?) will relate to this book.
