            Book Description

An astute, fun guide to organizing that offers tailored and specific advice-that actually works-on how to get and stay organized Based on Lanna Nakone's experience as a professional organizer and the science of brain function, this engaging, practical book begins with a fun quiz so readers can determine which of the four distinct thinking and organizing types they display: -Maintaining Style (routine) -Prioritizing Style (logical) -Harmonizing Style (interconnected) -Innovating Style (creative). Then, matching their brain type with a custom profile of maintainable organizing routines, readers will be able to effectively tackle the stacks of paper, poorly managed time, and clutter in their homes and offices. Readers will also gain insight into the other brain types and how each type can best work with and understand the others. Organizing for Your Brain Type turns the task of managing life into an enjoyable experience.

5 out of 5 stars The only place to start.......2007-08-05

Like so many people, I have read plenty of organizing books. I try to implement the recommended systems, but, if I even get the system in place, I can't sustain an uncluttered environment.

In Lanna Nakone's book, I learned that traditional systems of organizing only work for people who are already natural organizers. Only by understanding the way your own brain works, can you begin to implement organizational systems that will last for you. Read this book first, then you can sift through other organizers' advice and select what will ultimately work for you.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Practical Information, Fun to Read.......2007-02-21

I am very busy, so I do not have a lot of spare time to read. I liked how this book was concise and practical, and yet still fun to read. It is organized well so that I could quickly get the information I needed to help get myself organized, and then go back later and read about other types.

I especially liked the section which showed how people with other brain types viewed people with my type; it was uncanny!

I liked it enough to order two more copies for friends.

4 out of 5 stars Organizing for your brain type.......2007-02-19

One of the best organizing books for a chronically messy person! Actually, I'm not messy...I just do things differently. Easy to understand, easy to follow.

2 out of 5 stars Different slant on the Organizing problem comes up short.......2007-02-09

I found the ideas in the beginning of this book to be interesting -- and obvious. Of course everyone is not the same and needs different organizing techniques. It is a nice idea to have different ways of organizing in one book, geared towards the different ways people think.

However -- the quiz to figure out what "type" you are had some flaws. The answers are exaggerated to make it easy to select "your" answer, but some of the questions are things that aren't relevant (to me), and some of the answers didn't fit me at all. Once one type became clear, I found I fit around half of the qualities for that type.

Given the point that we are not all one type, I would have expected more information on how each person may have more than one style. This was not addressed at all.

While this books has some new ideas, I found most of them fell in the category "You are different, you don't have to do things like ." There are different suggestions for each Style, but I found them too general.

In addition, there is a "sensory" quiz, to let you know if you are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic person. I found this interesting as well, but did not get conclusive results on the quiz. The suggestions for the sensory preference within each style were, again, interesting.

All in all, I will use some of the ideas that I read in this book, in particular, some of the ideas behind why my "style" likes and dislikes certain things. I will mix that in to all of the other information I have read about organization and hopefully continue to develop something effective for me. I would not recommend purchasing this book, though, at least not without a dry run at the library. In addition to feeling it was incomplete, the writing style was sometimes irritating, with stories that weren't always on topic. I also think the author is of the "Harmonizing Style", as the way she wrote that chapter is markedly different from the others. Although she says each style is just the way certain people do things, no one style is better than any other, the treatment of Priorizing Style people isn't as kind in the end chapter about working with different styles.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful information.......2005-12-04

As the reviews say the book consists of looking at how we organize our life using 4 brains types. There is the Prioritizing type, the Maintaining type, the Innovating type, and Harmonizing type. Overall I found the book well written and enjoyed how the author looked at how each brain type functions overall. She talks about ways each brain type can: use a calendar more effectively, use storage space, deal with paperwork, organize your home and office space, and organize your environment. Also, at the end of each brain type chapter, she gives a nice bullet point summary of key points so that you don't have to go back and re-read in detail.

My only problem with the book was the testing method in helping to find your brain type. The test was 50 questions (too long) and many of the questions where things I had problems relating to. For example some questions asked:

You are reminded about going to the opera when:
            1. Check your planner a day in advance
            2. Notice post-its over the house
            3. Friends shows up at door step
            4. Your Palm Pilot's alarm goes off 15 before you are to leave

While Typing, you notice your dog is looking at you with those huge hungry eyes you:
            1. Tell him you feed him at the same time
            2. Your dog never looks hungry there food on the floor all the times
            3. Throw him your half-eaten doughnut form breakfast this morning
            4. Tell him to lie down and wait until you are done

You normally try to avoid conversations that:
            1. Involve the future
            2. That go into great detail
            3. That deal with figures
            4. That is too touch-feely

For me these questions (and some others) depend on situations. I may talk touch-feely at one time, and depending on the day or my mood, I might feed the dog now or wait. The test would have been more effective had it dealt with typical situations. My guess is she was trying to offer something different than the other books out there on organization that gives tests using every day situations, but her test did not work for me. Also, by her own admission, she says some of the test questions "seemed a little over the top" and what I found was because some of the questions were over the top, I scored in a different brain type category (Prioritizing style) when after reading the other brain types, I am clearly a Maintaining type.

My only suggestion would be is to take the test, but make sure you read the other types to see if they don't fit you better. The the book is arranged in a way that you can scan the other brain types easily. Overall the book is very good and offers good tips and info.

2 out of 5 stars Not so living foods.......2005-01-10

I found that most of the recipes in this book were either mildly "gross", in lack of better words, or they need some work to be better organized. I suppose this book could be considered a semi-introduction to living foods. However, I bought this book in combination with the rainbow green live food cuisine book and found the latter not only tastier and healthy but also easier. I recommend that book if you're looking for a well rounded introduction and eventual follow through to raw food. By the way, I don't recomend her fruit sorbet for those with glycemic difficulties, may induce sugar over load.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Raw Foodie "Cookkbook"!.......2001-12-08

If you are just getting started in raw food, this is the book for you. The recipies are simple, and you will love the taste of Markowitz/Cousin's food. Eating raw food can be al all consuming project, but the recipies in Warming up to Living Foods are not quite so labor intensive as some other raw food books. I highly recommend it, especially for beginners. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Friendly Intro to Living Foods Cuisine.......2000-12-26

In this recipe book, Elysa Markowitz introduces us to living foods by way of imaginative recipes, great instructions, variations, and the option of warming the foods (but not above 105 degrees F).

The book begins with the story of how Elysa came to raw foods. She moves on to providing a menu for 7 days for each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, plus snacks and drinks). For example, in the breakfast section, there are 7 days' worth of breakfast meals, and then in the lunch section, there are 7 days' worth of lunch meals, etc. In other words, there are a lot of recipes in this small volume!

Each chapter comes with Elysa's advice and info about each meal, and then with each recipe comes instructions on preparing the next day's meal (for example, if soaking is required you know about it beforehand so that you can be prepared for the next day's meals).

Each recipe comes with an approximation of how long it takes to prepare (and aside from time soaking seeds or dehydrating something, preparation tends to be very simple and quick). Many of the recipes do require at the least a blender or food processor (and electric skillet for warming, if desired--or just use a pan on the stove!). But Elysa also includes "machine options," with other choices to use such as a Vita-Mix or a homogenizing juicer, etc. However, you don't necessarily need advanced kitchen equipment. The dehydrator may be the most advanced equipment you would need, but again, there is the option not to dehydrate, or it is suggested you use the oven on its lowest setting, or the sun. I would think most people would already have the minimal equipment needed, other than a dehydrator and juicer (which is necessary to make some of the juiced drinks, of course).

In addition to "machine options," there are also "ingredient options" with variations on the theme, and there are "warming options," which suggest ways to warm the foods at a low enough temperature in order to preserve the enzymes and nutrients. The fact that the recipes are made to be eaten either warmed or not I think is great. Some of us interested in raw foods (and possibly even those who are very committed) may want a warm living foods meal sometimes. This book offers just that.

As if this book didn't already offer so much, there are also several color photographs of the finished recipes that will surely make your mouth water.

Overall, I have found this book to be a very helpful resource of recipes and information about living foods. The friendly tone, encouragement, and "options" have made the book very user-friendly. The "next day preparation" information for the next day's meals has been invaluable and a real help for someone who has a hard time organizing a week's meals which require soaking, sprouting, or dehydrating.

The recipes themselves are very interesting. The ones I have sampled have been wonderful. Some examples of the recipes are: "Scrambled Corn w/ veggie chips & salsa 'verde'", sprouted cereal, soups, salads, loafs, "eggplant pizza", "cauliflower casserole", pates, "unbaked beans," "strawberry cream pie," "ricotta 'cheese' spread with veggie 'chips'." Lots of fun stuff!

I recommend this book to all those who need/want to "warm up" to living foods.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you've bought into this lifestyle.......1999-11-05

This book is for those of you who have decided to switch to an all living foods diet. It has creative recipes made with a juicer, a food processor, a dehydrator, and an electric skillet. You will need to buy these to get much out of the book. For this reason, the raw foods dabbler may want to start with another cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars good little book.......2007-03-13

Book is nice and small, can easily be taken places and worked with. As with any project pattern book, some are good patterns, and some patterns you would most probably never use. People are different, though, and may like the patterns I didn't. I would use about 3/4 of the patterns myself, and I do like the size and convenience.

I love all of the "Vogue Knitting on the Go" series, and this one is just as much fun. Besides using novelty yarns, this book offers some terrific stitch patterns as well. Projects for begginner through advanced, these patterns are not fast, but they are beautiful. I've made several as gifts, and they are classic and unique - not trendy. Worth every penny.

New twist on the knitted scarf scene. If you like to make scarves and are getting bored with the same old patterns, this is the book for you.
                        Cheers to Vogue!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of variety.......2006-12-22

I'm a fairly new knitter and unlike a lot of pattern books, this one was very accessible to me with a range of projects from simple to complex. I've done one of the simple ones already and have my eye on some of the fancier ones to try once my skills have advanced a bit more. I love the small size; it fit easily right into my knitting bag so I could take it with me (yes, I did refer to it periodically even though the pattern I was doing was simple). The only issue I had was the pictures don't show the back side of the scarves; as a new knitter, I can't yet visualize how the reverse will/should look.

1 out of 5 stars nothing that I saw made me thinks " wow, I want to knit that.......2005-06-02

I think that patterns from this book is not attractive, not in style and some are even ugly. Just ordinary, nothing special check, stripe, cable, some lace. Really nothing that I saw made me thinks " wow, I want to knit that". And some patterns are really "cheating". With the simplest stitch and special yarns like thick and thin or muti- colors. I meant who needs a pattern book to knit stuff like that. I think this book is only good for those who are new to scarves knitting. If not, you probably can come up with something better on your own. I recommand " Vogue knitting accessorize", more than 50 very lady like, classy, stylish patterns for scarves and hat, ponchos, mittens and a few formen's.

Like the other vogue knitting on the go books, this is a very small, but a useful book. Don't let the small package fool you! It has several beautiful knitting patterns, all scarves look classy, and many are easy to make. I recommend this book, if you like other vogue knitting on the go books, or want to make stylish scarves.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little book for your knitting bag...........2005-01-30

VOGUE SCARVES is a complementary volume to the larger VOGUE basic knitting book. I bought the scarves book because I need inspiration. As I struggle to master basic knitting techniques, I like to think ahead to what might be possible if I persevere. This little book includes some beautiful examples of what might be possible if my fingers ever become un-numb from the work I've been doing.

Some of the Vogue scarf designs depend on fancy stitches, some on appliques, some on more than one color, some on a mix of the above. Many of the scarves include basic stitches I am already beginning to master. A good example of a relatively simple design is the `Chevron' scarf, which involves the garter stitch, knitting on a biased pattern by increasing stitches at each row, and using more than one color.

Seems as though knitting like advanced math involves calculations built up from addition and subtraction (`advanced' knitting techniques reduce to knitting and purling--apparently the reverse of each other). The most important ingredient in becoming a proficient advanced knitter is to master the basics. This book is for those capable of persevering who are ready to tackle more knitting and purling.

My christmas gift list is all wrapped up and ready to go thanks to this delightful book of patterns! Lots of variety for all the tastes and ages on my list as well as the interest of this knitter. Good directions and illustrations of techniques used for the less confident knitter. Good descriptions of yarn types for easy substitution for yarns used in the pictured scarves.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!.......2003-07-26

This is the greatest source of scarf patterns I have found. There is an amazing selection to choose from-easy to follow patterns for beginners on up. Lots of beginner/intermediate patterns and lots of fun patterns that you can pick up and put down at ease. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Projects for every experience level!.......2003-05-16

As a beginning knitter, I wanted to make things that were fairly simple but would make nice gifts... what would work better than scarves! This book has a nice variety of patterns from different sources, so the designs are all fresh, some dressy, some sporty, some delicate and some chunky... not just variations on a theme. Each pattern is rated either 'very easy', 'intermediate', 'experienced', or 'expert'. There are several patterns in each range, and even the 'very easy' are attractive and don't look like cop-outs!
There is some helpful how-to information at the beginning of the book, but an absolute beginner would need to learn at least the bare basics before starting any of the projects in this book.
The book is small and light, so I can stick it in my purse to go shopping for yarn, or in my knitting tote bag so I have the pattern handy.
The only drawback to this book is the binding.... the pages fall out too easily and I'm going to end up having a book held together by tape before long.
I look forward to getting more of these great little books!

5 out of 5 stars the best scarf book.......2002-09-30

My favorite of the vogue knitting on the go series. I am currently making (or have made 6) from this book alone. Unlike other books, this contains a LOT of variation between patterns (both in style and technique of construction), including a hood with ends that wrap to form a scarf, two different tubes to form loose collars, and a beautiful dragonflyl shawl. I highly recommend this book.

                        1 out of 5 stars Bad investment.......2006-03-23

I was attracted to the hat and scarf on the cover. When I opened the book, I was even more impressed with the fun look of the items. Boy, am I sorry I bought this book! I don't know if all the patterns are as bad as the one I tried because I haven't looked closely. You name it -- this pattern has everything wrong with it. It says decrease instead of increase and knit instead of purl. It leaves out instructions. It is overly complicated and ill-conceived. I can't figure out how this book went to press.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner.......2005-01-24

I got this book on the misguided notion that the chunky projects would be more beginner oriented. However, most projects require intermediate skill. There seems to be quite a lot of cabled hats and scarves here. The beginner level projects are things you can probably figure out on your own. There is one beginner level hat (on the cover) that looks interesting and I may make it soon. There are also these adorable baby hats (Ice Princess) with furry cuffs. I'd like to do something like that in adult sizes. The Water Lilies scarf is beautiful and is on my to-do list. The On the Fringe scarf may actually have some merit, but the color choices shown are soooo amazingly unfortunate, it's hard to get past the hideous-ness of it to see. All in all, I think the basics of a lot of these projects are in books you probably already own. But it's worth having if you can find a good sale price.

                            Book Description

This authoritative and scholarly treatise on the potatoes of Bolivia provides a definitive guide to the rich diversity and taxonomy of this important group of plants. The volume represents the culmination of a lifetime's study of these potatoes by Carlos Ochoa, and is published in collaboration with the International Potato Center in Lima, Peru. As such, it represents a definitive guide to these potatoes and is the first to be prepared under the auspices of a South American botanist. The text is abundantly illustrated throughout with clear line drawings, photographs and many specially commissioned water colors. Further volumes are planned on other South American potatoes.

First of all, I am a high school student who is extremely pro-Israel. I spend most of my free time writing to people about Israel.
Ok, I picked up this book in my school library while looking for books on Israeli politics. I expected her to come into it hating Jews/Israel and coming out of it loving Israel. Boy was I wrong.
What amazed me was that, despite her hating Zionists and Israelis, she went to Israel and managed to live there for an extremely long period of time.
For any pro-Israel person, read this book. It really allows you to walk a mile in the other persons shoes. I had always seen Israel as a place where everything was happy and good. But, this showed me how Israel is just like any other country. Danny also amazes me, as some people say that Israel is worse then South Africa was during apartheid. Here is a South African in Israel. I LOVED THE BOOK!!! Read it if you have not already.

5 out of 5 stars A brave personal quest, intelligent and honest.......2001-04-14

I have so thoroughly enjoyed reading this book it was difficult to put it down until the very last word.

This is the story of a young Egyptian Moslem woman, from a very wealthy family who became obsessed with Israel. She left her postgraduate studies at Harvard and went to Israel for a six-week visit that lasted three years. This all happened in the mid 70's before Sadat's visit to Jerusalem and Egypt's peace with Israel.

Sana Hassan delved into numerous aspects of Israeli society. She lived on traditional Kibbutz and on "progressive" Kibbutz; she lived amongst new immigrants from the former Soviet Union and elsewhere learning Hebrew, Judaism and life in Israel, she went through the process of how Israel receive new arrivals. She lived in ordinary apartments in Tel Aviv and amongst the cultural elites in Jerusalem. She also managed to pass herself as a Jew and worked in Israeli factories and restaurants and allowed herself to be recruited into religious orthodox ways. Sana Hassan managed to get herself everywhere imaginable in Israel and the occupied territories.

Sana succeeded in interacting with every possible segment of Israeli Society, politically, culturally, religiously and ethnically. From tea with Golda Meir at her house, lunch with Begin at the Knesset, and dinner with The Sharons all the way to meetings with pimps and prostitute as part of her volunteer work as a social worker. She managed to see more of Israel, perhaps than the vast majority of Israelis ever will.

The portrayal of the Israeli society is that of a country full of contradictions and racist attitudes. We see the lowly state of Eastern Jews and an almost pervasive hierarchy based solely on racial origin and beliefs. She portrays the "subhuman" untouchable type status of the vast majority of the Israeli Arabs and the West Bank Palestinians. She portrays an Israel full of push and shove, of vulgar, inconsiderate people with unabashed racism.

Sana Hassan also portrays an idealism, work ethic, warmth of ordinary people, capacity to love and learn and so much generosity. And yet, we see this hug mental barrier against admission or acceptance of the injustice befallen the Palestinians.

We are also treated to two love affairs of Sana Hassan, one with a married Israeli army officer and a very passionate affair with another young woman who was her roommate at the progressive Kibbutz. I puzzled for days over Sana Hassan's inclusion of these two stories, which undoubtedly would have been very controversial in her conservative home country. An affair with a married officer and a Lesbian episode would undoubtedly dilute Sana Hassan's message of peace. After years of condemnation in Egypt, Sana Hassan was finally rehabilitated, why did she choose to shock again and upset sensibilities?

Sana Hassan quest for peace was always personal, coming out of her inquisitive nature about Israel and things Jewish. From the days of her childhood when she was told off playing with an Israeli boy while on an Austrian holiday, from the unquestioning one sided media of Egypt, it was always a personal endeavor, she never pretended it to be on behalf of anyone else. I suspect for Sana Hassan, her on honesty and integrity were more important than acceptance and continued rehabilitation in conservative Egypt. She must have felt that she could not write about her experience in Israel without her affairs. Her recount of these stories certainly enriches the book and helps us understand her degree of assimilation and acceptance of the unthinkable.

Sana Hassan developed an in-depth understanding of Zionism, history, thought and present day attitudes. She presented the process with which she seemed apparently unable to reconcile her acceptance of Israel's right to exist, with Israel's "right" to be Zionist. She presented herself throughout the book as an unwavering supporter of Palestinian rights. Yet, she admitted to being more troubled by her army officer connections to racist South Africa than his career as an IDF officer. She also seemed throughout the book willing to accept the possibility that her lover was planted by the intelligence service.

With so much going on in her three years of Israel, you would expect a book written in simple straight forward story telling or even text style. That is not the case at all, Enemy In The Promised Land is so beautifully written. Sana Hassan is capable of great prose and lyrical descriptions of scenery, experiences and emotions, and most of all, of people. Her style comes across similar to the early work of Virginia Wolf, at times it seemed like she is even using similar words and phrases.

This is not a straight forward book. It is the sort of book that will truly makes no one happy. It is a confusing book. If you allow yourself the benefit of "learning" while reading it, it may shake many established beliefs and strongly held opinions.

Having read this book, I am absolutely certain of one thing. I will never never eat at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, the standards of hygiene at the restaurant were appallingly low. On most other issues, I am a lot less certain.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant writer describes Israel "as is".......2000-07-20

While the book contains many biographical and historical information, the book i s centered around three years the author, daughter of an Egyptian career diplomat, spent in Israel, long before Israel and Egypt established diplomatic relations. Israel, Hebrew and things Jewish have always held a fascination for the author, and she decided to visit Israel and see for herself what the country and its people are like. Ms. Hasan's visit to Israel met with family disaproval, a hostile Arab press and thr eats of imprisonment by her own government. Having withstood all these, the author's courage and strong will are even more note worthy.

Right from the start, Ms. Hassan, the daughter of an Egyptian diplomat, impresse d me with her sincerity, humanity and powers of observation. Ms. Hassan encounters a very different reality from what she's read about Israel in the Arab media. "Ver y different" doesn't always mean better as it doesn't always mean worse. With envi able sensitivity, humour and humanity, Ms. Hassan is shares and disects her experienc es in the "promissed land".

Ms. Hassan didn't enter Israel tabula rasa; She has many preconceived notions ab out the Arab-Israeli conflict, and those may or may not be different from those of h er readers. But she's very open and forthcoming in stating her views up front, and she's sincerely interested in opposing views. Her style of writing is neither preachy nor dogmatic, and so I think the book can be enjoyed by people with views different from her's.

Her insights about life in Israel, the Israeli-Zionist ethos, and the various so cial strata she encounters are breath-taking. It's difficult to see how someone could acquir e such a profound understanding of Israel after such a short stay (3 years) in the country.

During the three years the author spent in Israel, she underwent many experience s, some positive, some negative, some sad, and some just plainly bizzare. During th ose three years, the author has occassion to discover what Israel is really like -- to a celebrity, to an annonymous tourist, to a newly immigrated Jew, etc. She meets w ith people, is exposed to their views and feelings and fears. She finds friendship i n Israel, and love. She's also exposed to the uglier sides of life in Israel -- to the rac ism and the poverty, to the facist-militarist mind-set so many people here seem to hold, she
