A great book, almost as good as the Allergies and Asthma for Dummies book. Required reading for the Respircare Analytical training course.

Conventional management- we have heard it all before.......2006-07-25

Asthmatics are now better informed and can research the effects of medication, allergies etc very easily. This book has nothing to offer to HELP people with asthma. It adopts a very narrow approach specifically using medication.

One point that the book fails to discuss properly is the Buteyko method for asthma. The Buteyko methid without doubt the best help for asthmatics. It works by correcting breathing and reducing hyperventilation. I am always dissapointed as a once chronic asthmatic to read asthma books offering the same stuff. The only thing that ever helped me was the Buteyko method. Unless your asthma book has the details of this- it is letting asthmatics down.

A great first asthma book.......2005-08-10

I was skeptical of the name. However, I leafed through it (and many other asthma books) in a brick and mortar store before I bought this book. And I am so grateful! It's easy to read, but doesn't shy away from the technical and biological concepts you should know. It has nice diagrams for those of us who need the visuals to understand somewhat complicated biology.

I feel so much more informed about my disease after having read this book. I feel like I can talk with my doctors and know what questions to ask them, and understand their responses! I can honestly say that after reading this book, I was able to advocate for my own health enough that I feel I can breathe properly and happily now.

There are medications and small lifestyle changes out there that can improve an asthmatic's quality of life immensely. But it is important first to understand the disease itself and then what each medication or technique may do to help. This book is a good start, and I highly recommend taking the step to improve your well-being.

Practical, genuine, and doable.......2004-08-30

Asthma is serious; 15 people die of asthma each day yet many people don't take their symptoms seriously. Asthma for Dummies is both serious and yet conversational. It's practical, genuine and doable. It's got something of value for anyone interested in predicting, preventing, and responding to symptoms proactively.

A Dust Mite's Favorite Read.......2004-08-13

This book was extremely helpful in answering my questions about a recurrence of asthma after being free of symptoms for many, many years. I learned that you never really outgrow asthma and a recurrence is not unusual. I thought the book focused too much on allergies and did not explain how humidity might effect asthma. My symptoms get worse on chilly nights after a day of rain so weather seems to be my asthma trigger. Also the book does not contain any information on asthma support groups and neglects to cover controversial theories about asthma. However, it does describe all the medications you might be prescribed and their possible side effects.

I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

I purchased this book in West Berlin in 1991 and have used it so many times that the cover is gone and the binding is destroyed to I have to buy a new one! The recipes in this book never fail me and everyones always wanting to steal the book from me! I guard it with my life! I'm from Colombia and ten years ago my daughter bought at her school's book fair this magnificent jewel. Since then, I was drawn to buy the rest of the Series and so far, I'm the proud owner of seven other books from the series. (France, China, Thailand, Mediterrenean, Italy, Mexico and America Of course)I've tried lots of recipies and they all tourn out to be marvelous delights to a very picky palate. Congratulations on this coulinary home run. My only regret is that I'm limited to family and friends to buy the books, because I haven't been able to find a bookstore here in Colombia that sells the book. So I'm courious to Know if there is some alternate way to adquire them that doesn't imply traveling to the states?

The best cookbook ever.......2003-07-01

If you enjoy tasting the finest of foods that have been all time traditional favorites and you want to know how to prepare them yourself, this cookbook is for you. This book opens up the doors of cooking and makes you an instant expert. Contains the best chili and fried chicken you can imagine. I create 11 to 13 different pies every holiday and the pies comes from recipes right here. People think I am the best cook around, I wouldn't be without this book. The soups will imspire you to not only learn how to create these soups but come up with inventions of your own. Seriously, this book is a must have for someone that really wants to learn how to cook and needs a great recipe that will inspire them to continue. I have a whole library of cookbooks but this is my favorite one and the one that gave me the encouragement to make cooking my hobby. The chicken frickase is the all time best chicken recipe in the world. Make that and mashed potatoes and corn and you will have any man coming back for more.

Great Resource, If You Haven't Bought It Already.......2007-08-18

Written as part of the "Everything" series of books, the "pregnancy" volume attempts to cover all topics "pregnancy" related, and it does. The problem is that it has been done, several times before. I do like the layout of the book and found it very easy to read. The best part was the little aside pieces of information that are found in the "diaper pin" graphics. There are some really neat pieces of information for a new mom.

A completely rewritten and enormously improved second edition of The Everything Pregnancy Book is now available. The new book is by Paula Ford-Martin, with Dr. Elisabeth Aron, and is available on Amazon.

Misinformation and inappropriate recommendations.......2003-03-05

I read the first several chapters of this book and found several errors and some misinformation. For example, the book warns that marathon runners raise their core temperature an average of 37.4 degrees farenheit. Really? My core temperature when running goes up to 134.9 degrees? Wow. The consulting doctor also gives a recommendation for women to only gain 20 - 25 pounds during pregnancy so they can go back to prepregnancy weight "at delivery". Not only does this go against the recommendations given by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (average weight gain of 25-35 pounds) but going back to prepregnancy weight is unhealthy and impractical for women, especially if they plan to breastfeed, in which case they NEED fat stores so that their milk is healthy. I will be returning this book and will go back to reading "The Pregnacy Book" by William and Martha Sears.

I was very disappointed with the book and found that a lot of the information was completely contradictory to advice from my doctor and mid-wife. Of course, when pregnant, you should always check info out with your doctor, but of all the literature I have read, the advice in this book was most often out of sync with the other literature and professional advice I received.

A Decent Book For Needed Infomation About Pregnancy.......2001-12-21

I enjoyed this book a great deal. I found it not only to be on the level of a person who may not know a lot about human physiology, but also for people who may have a background in that area. (So many pregnancy books are patronizing.)

I think this book does a great job of explaining how to cope with morning sickness,backaches, and other small ailments associated with pregnancy. We all have little worries about our unborn baby and this book offers information that can help ease the mind. Plus it is nice to be able to walk into the doctor's office armed with some knowledge and knowing what questions to ask. A confident woman can have a confident labor when she knows what is going on.

A bag of marbles was pretty good. If you are looking for an educational book about wwII and want to escape the gore, this is the book for you. It gets a little slow, but you really do find yourself caring for theses two boys. Plus, it is non-fiction.

The story is about two young boys : Joe and Maurice, they are French and Jews, it's in Paris during world War 2. So they must avoid. they went to the south, near the Italian border.
The story is touching and well writing, but sometimes it's very boring, because there isn't a lot of action.

Kudos to the translator for keeping the author's words & spirit in tact in this heroic and moving testimonial about what it took to survive the Holocaust & what we all must do to keep other holocausts from happening again. In his own words, "be brave, know how to take care of yourself, don't rely on others, don't let your emotions get the better of you, take responsibility." Clearly, this title is a story that will encourage & remind young readers to always remember and to take responsibility.

A book of exceptional beauty.......2000-01-23

This is a beautiful book that tells the true story of two young Jewish boys on the run from the Gestapo in war-torn France. The author, Joseph Joffo is never nostalgic about the ordeal he and his brother went through in their bid to escape the Death Camps of Nazi Germany. He writes from the heart but he writes with purpose. His story is a warning to future generations never to take their lives for granted. A Bag of Marbles is a fantastic book that should be on the shelves of every school in the world, just to remind future generations that life is not always a bed of roses...
