    Book Description

The memoirs highlight four distinct periods. A troubled childhood and problems with his father propelled him at age 16 into the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940.

As a rear gunner following his training in Canada and England he joined a crew in Scotland and remained with them for 3 years in Bomber Command's raids on Germany and Italy and laying sea mines in the German shipping lanes. After the crew completed their first thirty trips with 49 Squadron (R.A.F.), they returned for a second tour with 405 Squadron (R.C.A.F.) of the famed Pathfinder bombing Group. Routledge spent the night of his twentieth birthday at 18,000 feet over the infamous Nuremburg where Bomber Command suffered its highest losses in one night. During the war he was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Repatriation brought disillusionment. Failure of his business venture left him at loose ends.

His marriage to his childhood friend and enlistment in the B.C. Provincial Police and then into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police gave his post war life a purpose and contentment. After over thirty years he retired with a notable record.

He was appointed Chairman of the Driver Control Board for the Alberta Provincial Government where he served for five years and then eventual retirement after over 40 years of working.

    Readers' comments:

We wish to congratulate you on the successful completion and launch of Lancasters and Lanyards. It is a fitting tribute to life lived truly and purposefully, an inspiration to read and emulate. May your book bring you new friends and tie you closer to old ones.
    Love,
    Shirley and Kevin Campbell

"Hi Jack, I have read Lancasters and Lanyards straight through and I admire your recollections especially of Bomber Command, Pathfinders, and the B.C. Provincial police and The R.C.M.Police. I am very pleased with your story and wish you and Margaret many happy days."
    Kevin Campbell, Armstrong B.C.

"I found Lancasters and Lanyards an extremely interesting book and good reading."
    Marion Allan, Cranbrook B.C.

"Jack Routledge's book Lancasters and Lanyards was very interesting and brought back many memories for me. Jack and I are old school chums."
    John Stuart, White Rock, B.C.

" I have just finished reading Mr. Routledge's book and found it just fascinating and the descriptions so concise. I had a son in the R.C.A.F. for 34 years and can identify with so many references".
    Eileen InDear, Vernon, B.C.

"I want to compliment you on a very well written and and interesting book. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience. I was flying Blenhiems at Number One Air Armament School at Manby, Lincolnshire, where you took your gunnery leaders course."
    Don Weatherill, Coldstream B.C.

"Congratulations to Jack Routledge on the publication of his most readable book Lancasters and Lanyards. The book not only chronicles his life, it contains it contains historical data concerning R.C.A.F.achievments, statictics, and an excellent synopsis of Bomber Commands ahievements. Each year Pacific group, Air Force Association of Canada selects aviation books to donate to local secondary schools. Copies of Lancasters and Lanyards will be presented by 899 (RCAF) Wing in Vernon to Vernon Senior Secondary School and the Clarence Fulton Senior Secondary, the latter associated with the the Airport Training Council. "Recently I was given a copy of your book, Lancasters and Lanyards - which I have read with the greatest interest and pleasure. I would hope this book will find its way into the public libraries, especially in the high schools. Young people today have very little if any knowledge of how their grand parents tackled the problems of their times. With my congratulations and best wishes,"
    Duggan Gray
    Vernon B.C.

"I received a copy of Lancasters and Lanyards in yesterday's mail. -Congratulations! I have started into it and I like what I have read. I began, where one should, at the beginning, but after a point began leafing through, probably attracted by the photos. I came upon the section where you defended the actions of Bomber Command. It is actually Appendix 3 the extract from "So Many - 50 Years On" by Bill Gunston. A great piece to include at the conclusion of an important piece of history. Best wishes to you both,"
    Roland Greenbank
    Huntingdon, Quebec

"I finally sat down the other night to read your memoirs and couldn't put the book down. It is a long time since that has happened. You asked if I had any comments to make please feel free to do so. Well like it or not here they are.
The wartime action narrative is realistic and sustained by substantial research material. The home life stories are intimate and provide the reader with a lucid insight into the cultivation of your character. The hardships of police life for a member and spouse become visible in a sequence of extremely interesting police experiences. In retrospect Jack, you were obviously the right man for the times. In summary, an excellent, easy flowing and captivating read for anyone.
I envy you leaving this fascinating and indelible account of your life, not only for the survivors of Bomber Command, but the Routledge family of the future. Congratulation Jack on a job well done."

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Proper AB training explained.......2004-11-12

The book is good, and really details the proper way to train your core. It is focused on training your lower abs so that they will adequately compensate for antagonizing muscles. Proper training of the abdominal muscles will result in better posture, less exposure to injury and better definition of the core muscles. It's critical to strengthen your core since it must stabilize you in almost all body movements. This book is a great step in learning how to do this. The diet info at the end is a little out-dated, and based on low fat intake. After reading this section, I would recommend skipping it and instead following the advice for diet and nutrition found in Paul Chek's latest book Eat, Move, and Be Healthy.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book on ab development, but outdated.......2002-01-08

I have to give this book credit, it sticks to its topic very well, making the book concise and easy to follow. It opens with the basics of ab anatomy and then moves in to various exercises and programs for strengthening and developing the abdominals. Only at the end does it stray slightly off course and discuss the nutritional aspects of ab development.

The one area where this book stands out (and my reason for purchasing it a while back) is that it focusses on the pelvic tilt associated with improper ab development. For about $... it might be worth it just for this information.

The downside is that this book is out of date. Swiss balls are the current rage in ab developed and the book author has titles devoted entirely to this subject, yet they aren't mentioned once.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely very good for beginner.......2002-01-05

Definitely very good for beginner, although I have to agree that flipping pages back and forth during the exercise is not very convenient. Authors could position material better or include a separate workout sheet. Most of the excersices can be done at home.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step plan for ab development.......1999-07-26

This is the best book I've read on how the abdominals work and how to development them. It begins with a technical section (low interest for me), but then moves to a helpful beginner, intermediate, and advanced level workout routines. That's the best section. Well worth the money!

2 out of 5 stars Good explanation of anatomy, not a good variety of exercises.......1999-06-07

This book does a good job of explaining the anatomy and function of the abdominal & back muscles, but it's hard to follow because you have to flip back and forth to get to the correct diagrams. There isn't a good variety of exercises. Many of the exercises require cable machines that aren't available at the gym I go to. Definitely not a book for doing exercises at home.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for coffee culture at home.......2006-05-01

While it's easy to get the fancy coffee machines that the big chains have, or the same gourmet coffee beans, one thing that's not as easy to reproduce is those tempting, rich delicious treats behind the bright glass case to go with the coffee. This book solves that issue, detailing how to make a wide variety of scrumptious treats. Not only does it give breads, cheesecakes, muffins, biscotti, cookies, and tarts to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth, all around a coffee house theme, but it manages to make the desserts accessible. The recipes use ingredients that are commonly found in every supermarket, and easy to follow instructions. For those who want to entertain but find themselves pressed for time, a few recipes use mixes with wise add-ins. Even better it includes a recipe for a 5 ingredient cheesecake anyone could make. Also included are recipes for a few of the coffee drinks themselves.

This book is a delicious addition to any cook's library and an absolute bargain. I especially recommend it as a gift for a coffee lover or college student.

At this price, grab a copy for yourself and one for a friend. You won't be disappointed!

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic resipes!!.......2004-05-09

This book contains some of the most delicious and easy to prepare recipes. After serving some of these treats I received rave reviews from friends and they wanted the recipes.
An interesting history of coffee at the begining but the simple tasty recipes are what makes this book a keeper!!

5 out of 5 stars Heavier on desserts than beverages, but oh, so delicious!.......2004-05-05

The "Maxwell House Coffee Drinks & Desserts Cookbook" starts off with some information & history on coffee and "The Maxwell House Story," followed by some information about brewing & serving coffee. The brewing & serving tricks are fairly standard. The rest of the book seems a little arbitrarily divided up. The sections are: Breakfast & Brunch; Coffee Break; Lunch; Afternoon Coffee Time; Dinner; After the Show; Midnight Snack. This means that if you want to find a certain kind of recipe, you should look in the index instead of trying to find the right chapter. After all, there are plenty of things that could work equally well for any of the above coffee times. The beginning of each chapter has a list of the recipes in it, though, which helps. The layout of the recipes is great, and most recipes are quite short and simple. Prep time and baking time are provided up front! The ingredients are set off from the instructions quite well, and the instructions are broken up into manageable chunks.

The beverages are simple, and some of them made me shrug. We already do things like add cinnamon or vanilla to our coffee, so those recipes don't add anything new to our repertoire. On the other hand, there are things like the "Shake Awake Smoothie," with double-strength coffee, banana, vanilla yogurt, sugar, and ice cubes. Simple it may be, but it's also yummy! Some recipes call for instant mixes, which may rub some people the wrong way. The hot chocolate cappuccino is just milk, chocolate, and instant cappuccino mix, for example.

The desserts include shortcakes with espresso cream, Hawaiian dessert sauce, cappuccino sticky buns, coffee cream cheese for your bagels, coffee cinnamon cream cheese brownies, banana caramel cafe pie, cafe panna cotta, caffe latte bread pudding, tiramisu cheesecake, and much more. Many of the recipes come with wonderful pictures.

This is an absolutely wonderful cookbook, and every recipe we've tried from it has come out perfectly. It is a fine source of new & unusual ways to drink coffee, as well as interesting recipes you can make with coffee.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute treasure!.......2003-10-31

This handy little cookbook is an absolute treasure! It starts out with a fascinating history of coffee, a history of Maxwell House, and then has some brewing and serving "tips and tricks." After that come the recipes!

The recipes are organized into seven chapters: 1) Breakfast and Brunch, 2) Coffee Break, 3) Lunch, 4) Afternoon Coffee Time, 5) Dinner, 6) After the Show, and 7) Midnight snack. Each of the more than 160 recipes(!) starts out with a list of preparation and (if applicable) baking times, a complexity rating (one cup to four!), a list of ingredients, and very clear step-by-step instructions.

My wife and I have found the recipes to be great, and none of the ones that we have done have proven to be all that difficult. Heck, some of the drinks are delicious, and take very little time at all. We love this book, and highly recommend it to you!

5 out of 5 stars Great addition for dessert lovers.......2001-05-26

This is a fantastic addition for cookbook/dessert fanatics. It contains a great collection of delectables that are EXTREMELY easy to prepare. Ingredients are mostly cupboard staples and the recipes are very simple. These recipes are impressive when served and will generate many rave reviews. A must have for those who love chocoalte, coffee and desserts. Includes several drink recipes.

              Book Description

Starting with just four of these stitches, this guide clearly demonstrates, with detailed step-by-step photographs, how to work up a complete project. Instructions follow on showing how to stretch and mount your first embroidery. Using further projects she helps you build up skills, introducing new stitches in each section. Line drawings accompany each design and are used as a guide for the stitches. The designs and colors used are traditional - reminiscent of the embroidery worked by embroiderers during the Tudor period, wonderful floral pictures worked in wool and soft colors. The book is a comprehensive introduction to this lovely technique and at the same time it offers embroiderers practical help with presentation and finishing.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic beginners book.......2006-02-14

This is definately a fantastic book for beginners looking at starting this craft. The book gives you a clear description of the tools you should look at obtaining, then with an embroidery hoop I completed my first piece in two evenings and it looks great! It doesn't have a lot of designs, but has all the basic stitches (step by step) and plenty of inspiration. 4 out of 5 stars Great BEGINNERS book.......2005-11-17

I really want to emphasise the title. Very basic but equally effective and the projects grow quickly. After you master these I would suggest the A-Z of Crewel Emroidery from Country Bumpkin - more projects and techniques but you'll have the basics already! Definitely worth the price of the book to get you started.

1 out of 5 stars Could be much better.......2005-06-16

I bought this book to brush up on my crewel work. I found the pictures and explanations of the stitches quite poor. One stitch I have forgotten and cannot remember it by the lack of detail in the instructions. Also, many stitches are missing,a beginner should look for a better book. The pictures of completed works are very nice and once you learn the stitches should be easy for a beginner. This part is worth the price of the book.

                  W. Cleon Skousen's "So You Want to Raise a Boy" is an excilent guide to parents with boys. My mother used the book as an aid in raising me and I and my wife have used it in raising our two sons. It gives a clear picture of the healthy development of a boy from birth to age 21. In the book, Skousen, a former police chief and FBI man, also talks about the mistakes that can be made along the way. As a specialist in juvenile delequency and a successful parent of 5 boys and 3 girls, Skousen shows both the right things to do and the mistakes that are made by all too many.

5 out of 5 stars We have raised 5 boys and this is the book we always turn to.......1999-09-07

Skousen truely knows what boys do. We have had So You Want To Raise A Boy on our shelves for over 20 years and refer to it regularly. When times are tough and I can't figure things out with my son, I go to "The Book" and Skousen helps me understand the characteristics of my son at his particular stage of development.

Year by year he tells me about the traits and characteristics of a baby, boy and then a young man. His advice is right on and has made our life much better.

Four are grown and beginning families of their own and we are still good friends.

Ariadne focuses on several renowned women artists, including Christine Downing, Deena Metzger, Anna Halprin, Carolee Schneemann, Ann McCoy, and Pauline Oliveros, who translate the "living material" of their dreams into literature, art, dance, music, and other modes of expression. In doing so, they are articulating new symbolic images of great value and importance in understanding both the creativity and spirituality of women, as well as the changes they are making in society.

                        Book Description

Three women, all philosophers, all of Jewish descent, provide a human face for a decade of crisis in this powerful and moving book. The dark years when the Nazis rose to power are here seen through the lives of Edith Stein, a disciple of Husserl and author of La science et la croix, who died in Auschwitz in 1942; Hannah Arendt, pupil of Heidegger and Jaspers and author of Eichmann in Jerusalem, who unhesitatingly responded to Hitler by making a personal commitment to Zionism; and Simone Weil, a student of Alain and author of La pesanteur et la grace.

Following her subjects from 1933 to 1943, Sylvie Courtine-Denamy recounts how these three great philosophers of the twentieth century endeavored with profound moral commitment to address the issues confronting them. Condemned to exile, they not only sought to understand a horrible reality, but also attempted to make peace with it. To do so, Edith Stein and Simone Weil encouraged a stoic acceptance of necessity while Hannah Arendt argued for the capacity for renewal and the need to fight against the banality of evil.

Courtine-Denamy also describes how as a student each woman caught the eye of her famous male teacher, yet dared to criticize and go beyond him. She explores each one's sense of her femininity, her position on the "woman question," and her relation to her Jewishness.

"All three," the author writes, "are compelling figures who move us with their fierce desire to understand a world out of joint, reconcile it with itself, and, despite everything, love it."

5 out of 5 stars A good intro to these ladies and their times.......2002-07-11

This is not an easy book. It is a glance into the lives of 3 women, Hanna Arendt, Simone Weil, and Edith Stein, each of Jewish descent and, in particular, at the response each one made to Nazism. There is a review of each woman's life and her career. A lot of space is given to the education of these women, which is especially interesting since each studied under some of the biggest names in philosophy in the 20th century. It is not easy to follow, however, unless you have some basic knowledge of Heidegger, Jaspers, Alain, Husserl. But it is still interesting. Each of these women chose a different response (not just to nazism, but to the world, actually). Arendt became strongly Zionist, and an author of wonderful books; Simone Weil, strangely at odds with her heritage, but whose essays are marvels of clarity, chose a strange path of starvation (whatever the philosophical underpinnings, one wonders about anorexia); Edith Stein converted to Catholicism and became a Carmelite nun, devoting her life to prayer (though still writing). Each of these responses is fascinating in its own right. I highly recommend this difficult, but rewarding book.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing story of three remarkable women.......2001-09-23

I am no philosopher, but have read the works of the three women who are the subjects of the book.
I was hoping to put the three lives into the context of the intellectual and social world they lived in, and how and why they made their individual decisions on philosophy, religion, and their approach to the questions posed by both Nazism and the feminist movement.
But little detail is given about the intellectual life. We are told the names of their mentors: but not any details of what these mentors taught (a major flaw for the non philosophy student who is not familiar with Heddiger etc.).
At the same time, except for some fine passages on Simone Weil, there is little detail on the inner lives of the women: we see only the outline of their parallel lives, often mixed together in a confusing manner. Arendt's affair with her professor, a subject recently treated in detail in a recent Atlantic magazine article, is given one sentence. Stein converts, with no more detail on her inner life than one could read in a blurb in the Catholic encyclopedia.
In summary, the author fails to provide details for the novice to understand the lives of these women, but does not go into sufficient depth for a philosophy student to learn anything new.
However, the passages on Simone Weil are an exception to my criticism. I did learn a lot about both her writings and why she thought and wrote her famous letters.
