      Book Description

This well-researched study traces the activities of the famed naturalist John Muir in Southern California. It reveals his friendships with such figures as Charles Lummis and A.C. Vroman, and traces his explorations of Southland mountains and deserts, as he stirred up support for wilderness and forest conservation. The story begins with Muir's first Southern California visit in 1877, and ends with his death in Los Angeles in 1914.

Also included are letters between Muir and his Southland friends, and newspaper articles about his visits in the area, meeting Theodore Roosevelt and Andrew Carnegie, among others. A section of places to visit describes sites associated with Muir which are enjoyable today.

Diabetes impacts the heart, stroke, blood pressure, classic
diabetic nerve damage and autoimmune disease. Risk factors are
aggravated by the high consumption of white sugar by Americans.
Risks can be mitigated with cod liver oil and Omega 3 fish oils.
Type I diabetes may be prevented with proper nutrition, decreased nitrates and avoidance of food allergies. Early breast-feeding is known to protect the child by promoting a healthy gut. Diabetes
may be controlled naturally with multivitamins, flavonoids and probiotics (introduction of good bacteria into the system).
Food allergies are aggravated by diarrhea, constipation, gas,
muscle and joint pain. Foods with a low glycemic index are
apples, asparagus, broccoli, celery, cucumber, grapefruit, tomato, lettuce, spinach , strawberries nuts and seeds.
Oatmeal, peas, pita bread, beans and yams have intermediate levels on the glycemic index.

This book is excellent for anyone desiring more detailed information on the various types of diabetes and sugar control.
It is a worthy purchase for any personal library.

In general, I avoid the "diet and supplement" solutions to all health problems. Not that I don't believe that diet and dietary supplements don't work - rather, that I don't have the tools to tell the crackpots from the serious researchers. This book caught my attention for several reasons:
        (1) its diet is not based on the USDA recommendations but rather on the food pyramid from Harvard, Asia and the Mediterranean diets. To this it adds the 5 color fruit and vegetable recommendations and the glycemic load data.
(2)it uses scientific not ancedotal bases for its recommendations. For example, it notes that chromium has been shown to have a positive effect but only in those with a chromium deficiency.
(3)it adjusts it recommendations to fit the diabetes of an individual - type of diabetes, degree of current control of blood sugar levels and status regarding a variety of complications of the disease.
(4)it assumes that primary care is in the hands of a "conventional doctor" and may include medications, exercise and mental elements. In this context, it recommends more comprehensive monitoring of body chemicals than is the protocol for many doctors.

The overall result is a book that is well worth pursuing for what may be helpful to you as an individual as you make the life style changes necessary to live with the disease.

5 out of 5 stars Let them eat cake!.......2001-06-06

I have a number of Elizabeth Alston's books, and she is true to form in this one. I would venture to bet she is from England, or at least has an English heritage due to her taste in cakes. You won't find sheet cakes or layer cakes calling for lots of super sweet icing in this book. These cakes are for the purists out there who appreciate the complex flavors and textures of unadulterated cake. Each one is unique and delectible. The point is that the CAKE itself is the star of the show here. I truly enjoy some of her unique flavor combinations and variations in these recipes. (A note about flour: I have found that using cake flour does not give as good a crumb and weight to the pound cakes or the heavier coffee cakes. Not only does it cause the cake to be too "crumbly", but the cake dries out after a day or two. Reserve the cake flour only for recipes that are for light cakes such as Angel Food cakes.)

Another thing I appreciate about this book, and her baking for that matter, is that you can bake more than one batch at a time. In fact, I think the cakes taste better when done that way. With the flavor combinations she has assembled, her suggestion to allow the cake to rest one day before serving or freezing is a good one. This allows all those wonderful flavors to mingle, or as my grandfather used to say, to let the flavors "meditate".

None of her recipes are hard, complicated or time-consuming. In fact, they are pleasingly quick to prepare for baking. When I am not baking a cake, muffins or scones from one of her cookbooks, I am reading them, scouring them for inspiration to be creative. She has taught me a lot about expanding my horizons in this area, for which I am thankful. My husband is thankful as is his coworkers. This morning he took a freshly baked creation to work to share with his department. Shortly after noon I received an abrupt e-mail saying that if I ever wanted to see my husband again I would have to send at least five of those cakes to the office!! The staff must have loved them to want cake ransom for my husband's return. Get the book and watch with pleasure as your loved ones and friends pig out on your creations in a wild food orgy. But be careful...you might find yourself chained to the kitchen with someone holding a gun to your head as you are trying to get YOURSELF out of ransom!

        4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2000-12-16

I haven't made all the cakes in this book, but I've made over half of them, and all have worked out well. My primary interest is in the pound cakes and angel food cakes; I've made all of these. In particular, the fresh raspberry and the lemon-vanilla cakes have turned out extremely well. In the pound cakes, I had the best result with the sour cream/chocolate chip and the soaked orange cakes. I've also made almost all the chiffon recipes, with the best reslts with the orange-and-lemon and the chiffon spice cakes.

This book has detailed instructions to accompany the recipes, making it easier for beginners to follow. Too often, smaller books such as this will sacrifice instructions for saving space, and this one doesn't.

My only disappointment is the quality of the book itself. There are no photographs, and the quality of the paper and binding don't bode well for heavy use. I plan to transcribe a few recipes out into the computer and the book won't be used again. The recipes are a good buy for the book's price, though. Just don't expect to hand this volume down to your children!

        4 out of 5 stars A must have.......2000-04-20

This book is just great. The recipes are simple, easy to follow, and they taste wonderful. The explanations given are so helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book on animal afterlife written more than 100 years ago!.......2007-04-04

I've just finished reading this excellent book called The Immortality Of Animals by E. D. Buckner written in 1903. Awesome, profound, moral and rational teachings and explanations about the nature of animals and afterlife are found within the pages of this book. It is a comprehensive look at the principles of reality by a full blown mature, loving, and complete human mind. Respecting animal life, and similarities between mankind and animals in relation to the soul/mind in which all living souls are immortal. Man and woman and animal are all created/formed out of the earth and all have the same God-breathed breath.

Christ was born amongst the animals and He fasted 40 days living amongst the animals. He referred to Himself as the Lamb of God and the Good Shepherd, and a dove represented the Holy Spirit. The New Testament is the `animals Bible', for the poor in spirit. God made a covenant with Noah and with the animals that He will never again cut off all life with a flood.

God said, "Every animal is Mine." There is a lot of Scripture in this book, but concerning Mr. Buckner's own thoughts on this subject I was amazed at his brilliant intellect. I kept going "wow, that's right! I never thought of that, yeah!"

He explains how the animals are objects of God's creative love. They cannot sin, and are under no moral law. Their sufferings, as well as man's, are a result of the Fall; then of man. The effects of the Fall changed the nature of our eating, health and lifespan. Animals will be rewarded for their sufferings. There is God's justice in the end for them.

Heaven is a real place for all God's creatures. Solomon says animals have spirits. God preserves both mankind and animals, the Psalms say. Animals were sacred to the ancient Egyptians. There are animal mummies buried next to Egyptian humans.

We learn which religions teach kindness to animals and that they were NOT created solely for man's use. The worst sin is cruelty to animals and many of these are done by so called Christians. How can common sense even fathom that a diabolical murderer might make it into Heaven but a sinless animal would not? I don't think so.

We see how people have used and abused animals for financial gain and for scientific advance. According to the Bible many Christians should be following their God given conscience, supporting animal rights groups, repenting, and taking responsibility and being accountable for their actions against the animals. Abraham Lincoln was a great and kindhearted Christian man who was once seen rescuing a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest and gently put it back in.

Mr. Buckner explains the intelligence of animals. They have better moral values and skills than most people. Fidelity, and love, are one of the highest and strongest attributes of the soul, and is greatest in animals. Animals, especially domesticated animals, exhibit numerous attributes some of which are love, hate, unselfishness, pride, jealousy, loyalty, body and verbal language, friendship, reasoning powers, memory, foresight of consequences, and a sense of moral responsibility, all of which belong to the spirit and not the body. Animals posses knowledge, intellect, thoughts, dreaming abilities, physical and emotional feelings, and free will. Instinct is also a very strong attribute of the soul, and it is superior to man. They receive their knowledge/instinct directly from God and are governed by the same physical and mental laws as man. Many people can honestly say that their companion animals are the ones that have truly taught them what love is really all about. I know I can say that.

They are educated by their parents and by experience; they build houses and have families. The only difference between them and humans is the degree of intellect. Monkeys are an example of a higher than average degree of intellect.

Communication with animals is a spiritual thing, not physical. The eye cannot see without a soul's presence. Every movement and sound they make is a result of messages to the brain that have nothing to do with their physiology. The soul is in the brain/mind. Matter - cannot think or speak. Matter - cannot move without the spirit.

The book shows how and why the animals praise God according to Scripture and according to their own nature. Animals are God's pleasure proving an afterlife. Instead of limiting God's goodness, mercy, power and love to humans like so many people do today, he demonstrates how God extends His immense love for ALL of His creation.

Theology's flimsy rationale for animals having no souls is discussed.
There is a very eye opening, yet comforting, explanation about the issue of the animal sacrifices in the Old Testament.

Animals as compared to mankind including infants, savages, the mentally challenged, and the heathen in relation to the placement of their souls; how cruelty is offensive to God; how man is animal's worst enemy, for both wild and many domestic animals; how we should be teaching children, and much more. God's tender mercies are over ALL of His works! (Psalm 145:9) It is an excellent and highly recommended book filled with practical knowledge and wisdom and I think everyone should have one on their bookshelf.

This is the most organized and comprehensive single text on Garden Railroading that is currently in print. If my figures are correct, it is also the best-selling book on the subject. You will certainly save the cost of this book many times over as you use its guidelines to make effective planning and purchasing decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book on Joint Custody.......1999-03-08

This book surveys a lot of research on joint and sole custody and gives the reasons why children do better when they have both of their parents in their lives. There is enough material in here for any parent to know what to say to his/her lawyer or to the judge as to why he/she wants joint custody. There is also ample information in this book to enable parents to draw up shared parenting agreements. There is also an index of the custody laws in all 50 states, and an index of mediation statutes and practices in all 50 states. A terrific book!

                Book Description

Frank Coles Phillips was a petrographer, mineralogist and structural petrologist working in the middle of the 20th century. He was very influential, both in the UK and abroad and was responsible for encouraging the development of structural geology as a discipline in Australia and for the adoption of the stereogram as a fundamental interpretational tool in a structural geology in the UK. He was a superb teacher, perhaps best known amongst mineralogists and geologists of today for his classic textbooks, An Introduction to Crystallography and The Use of Stereographic Projection in Structural Geology. Phillips was the first to apply the methods of structural petrology (the study of the microscopic fabric of deformed rock) in a attempt to unravel the complex structural history of the Moine rocks of northwestern Scotland. His findings were at odds with those of his contemporaries and resulted in the Moine petrofabrics becoming embroiled on a long-running controversy, only completely resolved since the mid-1980s.

This geological biography of an importance 20th century mineralogist and petrologist takes a critical look at Phillips' research in the context of contemporaneous developments in structural and Moine geology. It reviews his work in relation to both past problems and present solutions. It will be of interest to all geologists, especially structural and microstructural geologists, historians of sciences and the general reader with an interest in science.

4 out of 5 stars The Real Survivors.......2002-04-13

One of the most popular films of 1993 was Steven Spielburgýs Schindlerýs List, the story of
one manýs fight against the Nazi killing machine that we know today as the Holocaust. As the
film closed, the audience saw many of the survivors and their families as they gathered at
Oskar Schindlerýs grave to pay homage to this ýRighteous Gentile.ý

Like many others in the audience, I wondered what had happened to those men and women
after the war and the experiences that had not made the movie. Now I know. In Schindlerýs
Legacy, Elinor Brecher has shared the fascinatingýand horribleýstories of over 40 of those
who eventually came to live in America.

They tell, for example, of the almost random nature of their survival. Several tell of times
when the German guards lined up their work detail and shot every fifth person. Many were
away from home on some kind of errand when the Gestapo came and took away the rest of
their family. We read of Celena Karp who was selected by the notorious Josef Menegle for the
line heading to the gas chambers. For some reason, he decided to remove some from the
doomed line. When Celena reached him the second time, she begged him, ýLet me go,ý and
for some inexplicable reason, he did!

In these accounts, we learn again of the horror of the concentration camps. Remember the boy
who survived several searches by hiding in the filth of the latrine? This was no product of the
writerýs imagination; Roman Ferber tells his own story in his own words. Others relate the
beatings they survived, the rides in unheated and unventilated cattle cars, of the friends they
carried to the ovens. That they survived is nothing less than a miracle.

These arenýt just the stories of the camps, however. We learn more about the people and the
lives they lived before the warýthe young couple who married only days before their arrest,
the woman who had to give her new-born son to a Catholic family in order to survive herself,
and the men and women who watched in horror as their parents and their brothers and sister
were dragged away or shot before their eyes.

After these experiences, what kinds of people did they turn out to be? Some have never
forgiven the German people for what happened, while others have miraculously put the past
behind them. And some are so traumatized that they have never been able to watch the film
                based on their experiences.

This is a book that needs to be read!

5 out of 5 stars Oskar Schindler - Rake and Saviour.......2000-08-12

Oskar Schindler, one remarkable man who outwitted Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to save more Jews from the gas chambers than most of the heroic rescuers during WWII.

Oskar Schindler was one of only a handful who surfaced from the chaos, and generations will remember him for what he did ...

When asked, Schindler told that his metamorphosis during the war was sparked by the shocking immensity of the Final Solution. In his own words: "I hated the brutality, the sadism, and the insanity of Nazism. I just couldn't stand by and see people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had to do, what my conscience told me I must do. That's all there is to it. Really, nothing more."

Oskar Schindler died in Frankfurt on the 9th of October, 1974, at an age of 66. From 1939 to the day he died he was such in love with his Jewish people, that he wanted to be buried in Jerusalem. His friend, a Schindler-Jew, Poldek Pfefferberg asked him shortly before he died, why he wanted to be buried here. He answered :"My children are here ....."

5 out of 5 stars Holocaust Survivors Remembered.......2000-05-03

I'm stressing this to all, that this book is one of the greatest books I've ever read. It's very intense and real. Because of the way these Holocaust survivors explain their experiences at the concentration camps, it makes you feel as if you could've been there. The way that these survivors have achieved great goals in there lives after the Holocaust, is amazing. I recommend this book for everyone to read to get a better understanding of the Holocaust. This book is truely amazing.

I was really moved by this. It was almost as riveting as another book I read recently called Hitler's Silent Victims. I recomend this book highly.
