Product Description
Under the leadership of a dedicated pilot, the B-26 Marauder was a formidable weapon in the campaign to defeat Hitler's armies, and, in the words of his first copilot, "Lou was the best there was. He created a spirit among the crew that made us really want to fly the mission and be disappointed if we had to abort." This memoir begins with Captain Rehr's arrival in pre-invasion England in May 1944 and ends with the completion of Major Rehr's aircraft disarmament duties in postwar Germany in July 1945. Rehr, a squadron commander with the 323rd Bombardment Group, earned 12 air medals, five battle stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star. He describes his experiences, including five night-bombing missions he volunteered to fly in 1944 and accounts of attacks by Me-262 jets in late April of 1945. The narrative also recollects two summers in 1936 and 1938, when, as a teenager touring Germany, he observed the influence of Nazism. This memoir is the result of forty years of research on the combat history of the B-26, contributions from comrades, an extensive collection of rare photographs, artifacts including newspaper articles and letters, and all military records and documents relating to Rehr's part in World War II. One appendix describes where readers can find images and restorations of the B-26. A second gives brief follow-ups on the men described in the narrative, often with their remembrances of the events outlined.

Excellent War Memoir.......2006-12-08
"Marauder" By Lois S. Rehr, with Carleton R. Rehr. Subtitled: "Memoir Of A B-26 Pilot In Europe In World War II." McFarland & Company, Jefferson, N. C. 2004.
The mains portion of this book deals with the author's adventures as a pilot flying the Martin B-26 Marauder, a twin engine bomber, in World War II. The book jumps right into the action, beginning with the D-Day, June 6 1994 invasion of Festung Europa. The author then traces the action from newly liberated France to the attacks on the heart of Germany. Chapter 11, "The Last Of The Jet Boys", is one of the more extensive accounts of the USAAF struggles with the German ME-262 jet fighter that I have read. Almost all, if not all, of the American aircraft were outclassed by the ME-262 jet. I found the author's stories about flying sorties to be gripping, but there are better flying accounts, as in "Wreaking Havoc: A Year In An A-20" by Joseph W. Rutter. The A-20 was also a twin engine bomber.
The last chapter, "Disarmament Duty" is interesting in its own right. The author describes the low-key but ever present hostility of the conquered Germans. When the Americans requisitioned their house for living quarters, some German ladies stuffed up the toilets with towels. Louis S. Rehr, the author, had visited Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. He had photographed various monuments, such as the "Feldherrnhalle" in Munich (1938). On page 181, the photo shows the author in the same spot in 1945. He also took a picture of the famous (infamous) Munich Hofbrauhaus being occupied by the American 157th Infantry Regiment. This chapter, alone, is worth reading the book for.
Great Read!.......2004-02-03
"Marauder: Memoir of a B-26 Pilot in Europe in World War II" by Lou Rehr (with Carleton Rehr) is a terrific read for anyone who enjoys aviation, or military history. It chronicle's Rehr's war experience from a Midwestern military academy, to pre-war pilot training, joining a B-26 squadron in the European theater during days after D-Day to the close of the war as that squadron's commander. If you enjoyed Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers", "Marauder" is a great companion piece, taking the reader through the final year of World War II from the perspective of a bomber crew. There is no bravado, no embellishment, just the true-adventure of another quiet hero of our "greatest generation". Mr. Rehr is able the frame the war with the unique insight of a young man who had visited pre-war Europe in 1938. Immediately after VE day, he witnessed some of the horrors of the Third Reich as well as the historic aircraft of the Luftwaffe. At 218 pages, this fast-paced book, and would make a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Fascinating look at WWII from one manýs perspective........2002-07-29
This is the inside true story of a B-26 bomber pilot, including his early military training, the initial
excitement of war, and the eventual pain of losing friends and fellow pilots in Europe. Some of
the vignettes were amusing; many were poignant.
Bauers also tells of his military career and his years as a military attache in Pakistan. All in
all, the book was both enlightening and entertaining. A worthwhile read for anyone interested in
WWII history.
A lesson on life.......2002-07-27
Memoirs of a Marauder Pilot is a wonderfull book for a younger generation to learn from. Mr. Bauers talks about his life before, during, and after the war. It shows the reader that any goal you set, is obtainable. I found Memoirs of a Marauder Pilot to be very enjoyable to read. I would recomend to anyone with a passion for hisory to read it.
A very personal account of flying the Marauder.......2002-07-24
Memoirs of a Marauder Pilot is real life rather than contrived. It's a very personal account of young man coming of age in some of the most challenging times of the last century. At the heart of the book is a detailed description of his piloting a difficult if not dangerous aircraft known at the Marauder in battle in WWII. But the book has much more. It goes on to describe how that experience affected him through his life. His life ends up being as interesting as his recollections of battle as he describes finding the woman of his dreams, his foreign service career and his work after leaving the service. This book is different from other war autobiographies in that it lets the reader into the life of the author before and after the military action.
A very personal account of flying the Marauder.......2002-07-22
Memoirs of a Marauder Pilot is not a Tom Clancy novel or the like with a lot of contrived drama aimed at arriving at the perfect ending. Instead it is the real life story of a man who lived through some of the most challenging times of the last century. The book is about flying the Marauder, an unruly and challenging craft, in wartime. But it is also about the challenges Mr. Bauers had to overcome to become and pilot and the effect the experience had on the rest of his life. And the story doesn't end with the war. This is a personal book and how the description of the author's life is integrated with his experience with his Marauder is its real beauty.
WWII Flying History.......2002-05-16
Excellent and well written. A must for WWII buffs.

Book Description
Joan Mark offers an interpretive biography of Patrick Tracy Lowell Putnam (1904–53), who spent twenty-five years living among the Bambuti pygmies of the Ituri Forest in what is now Zaire. On the Epulu River he constructed Camp Putnam as a harmonious multiracial community. He modeled his camp on the “dude ranches” of the American West, taking in paying guests while running a medical clinic and occasionally offering legal aid to the local people, and assumed the role of intermediary between locals and visitors, including Colin M. Turnbull, author of the classic Forest People. Mark describes Putnam’s mercurial relations with family and with his African and American wives—and follows him to his sad and violent end. She places Patrick Putnam within the context of three different anthropological traditions and examines his contribution as an expert on pygmies.

Penelope Quest's book is a very in depth and insightful book for anyone interested in not only learning about Reiki, but for those teachers that are interested in using an additional text to their own materials. Best Reiki Book Ever!.......2003-10-28
This is the Reiki book you've been waiting for! It is really comprehensive, well written, easy to understand, and useful for anyone with an interest in Reiki, from beginners right up to Reiki Masters. It gives a good grounding in energy theory and the metaphysical causes of illness, plenty of basic information about how Reiki was discovered, how it has developed in the West and in Japan, and what the training involves at each level. However, its main strength is the way it explains how to use Reiki at each level, including all the hand positions and lots of advanced Second Degree techniques you won't find in any other book, plus creative uses for Reiki like enhancing your psychic ability and healing past lives. It includes some vital information about the need for energy cleansing and protection, plus many additional techniques from the Reiki traditions in Japan. Added to that, it emphasises the importance of spiritual development with Reiki, suggests how to manage Reiki sessions and set up as a professional Practitioner, advises on how to become a Reiki Master, and gives brief details of 28 different Reiki systems! It's an easy read, but an amazing resource that you'll want to go back to again and again - definitely the best Reiki book ever!

Customer Reviews:
great cookbook .......2007-09-09
I picked up this 2006 edition at a discount book store and love it! This annual cookbook has 600+ recipes. I don't have a subscription to the magazine so I was glad to have a book that provides all the recipes I missed. For the price I paid for this cookbook I saved money compared to the cost of an annual subscription. The recipes are similar to the kind you would find in Gourmet Magazine, probably a little daunting for a beginning cook, but a treasure for a "foodie". There are some pictures and lots of wine advice including wine pairing suggestions which is nice! This is a great addition to a home cookbook library, and a cookbook that a serious home chef would use often.

Book Description
Step-by-step instructions for one standard model provide the groundwork for 16 elaborate basket designs in this introduction to basket carving. Carvers learn how to use their scroll saws and the provided base pattern to create basket "levels" that, when glued together, form the base for a complete basket. This set of fundamental principles provides the jumping-off point for hundreds of basket designs. Patterns include small and large market baskets, a candy dish, and a tissue box. This new edition includes four new projects.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-02-22
I love this book. The patterns are easy to follow, even for a beginner like me. I only wish there would have been more patterns. Everyone was amazed that the baskets were not carved from a solid piece of wood. I would recommend this book for beginners to advanced.
Step-by-step instructions from start to finish.......2004-06-07
Now in an expanded second edition, Making Wooden Baskets On Your Scroll Saw by woodworking experts John A. Nelson and William Guimond reveal just how simple and straightforward it is to create custom wooden baskets on the scroll saw. Showcasing wonderful projects with nicely illustrated, step-by-step instructions from start to finish, even the most novice woodworker can turn out professional quality market baskets, oval baskets, round baskets, square baskets, tissue boxes, candy dishes, jewelry boxes, and more.
Low Quality typesetting.......2004-01-13
I just received this book, and the typesetting and illustration quality leave a lot to be desired. It appears that the publication master was typeset on a low quality laser printer. Twenty years ago I would have expected as much from a limited audience publication like this, but in this day and age there's really no excuse not to take the time to publish a book with high quality printing. (ever heard of Kinko's?)
I have not yet had a chance to try the patterns, but because of the low resolution, I am concerned that when I try to photocopy them for sawing, the quality of the working patterns may not be very good.
very very ingenious,.......2000-11-23
This book has idea very good about you use your scroll saw, the patterns are easy to follow, they are simple idea but very very ingenious, excellent, buy it, you won't waste your money
Beautiful Wooden Baskets Make The Perfect Gift.......2000-10-28
This is a wonderful collection of patterns that can be completed by scroll sawyers of all skill levels. Each basket is made by cutting a single layer of wood and then stacking and gluing the layers on top of each other. The end product is a basket, candydish, or napkin holder that appears to be woven in the style of those expensive Longerberger baskets now popular on the "Tupperware Party Circut". I have now completed three of these baskets. The amazing thing is no one has yet been able to figure out how they were made. Even my woodworking friends were amazed by this new technique. Patterns for 10 wooden baskets are provided in this 60 page full sized pattern book. Each pattern is accompanied by a photograph of the finished basket and the book opens with a chapter explaining the entire process through text and photos . The patterns call for wood between 1/4 and 1/2 inch in depth, but I have successfully made baskets with 1/4 inch plywood and 3/4 inch pine. The patterns can be enlarged or shrunk on a coppier and wood types and thicknesses can be varied to create a wide variety of objects. A scroll saw or fret saw is needed to complete these projects.

A comprehensive book for the advanced hobby gardener.......1999-07-25
This book gives a good overview for a hobby gardener who wants to know more about Camellias. Trehane deals in the first chapters with the history of Camellias and their "botanical context" and provides on about 50 pages everything a non-specialist needs to know. The next chapter, about as long, summarizes all necessary information regarding cultivation. Further sections are the use of Camellias in the garden, 3 pages with hintes how to exhibit Camellias, 13 pages about pests and diseases. Finally Trehane introduces a selection of popular Camellias (35 pages). The book concludes with some useful addresses. This book is not an encyclopedia with rich illustrations, but it is helpful and useful for a gardener who tries to learn more about Camellias and to grow them successfully.

Book Description
Artist, poet, furniture restorer, street evangelist, and author William H. Shuttleworth shares his personal experiences and Biblical views in Moving Experiences published by Prospect Press. In this (his third book), he brings together his personal journey of faith, along with his original poetry, in a book that will inspire others.
To William Shuttleworth it seems that he has been working on furniture in one way or another for almost as many years as it took Noah to build his ark. It has taken him down the road doing service calls for furniture stores, moving claims for van lines, and antique restoration and refinishing in his own workshop. The title of this book, Moving Experiences, began to bud in his mind during the daily flurry of moving claim activity. The fascinating stories were there, but how could they be brought together?
Just as the biblical story of Noah is about more than an animal lover who built a boat, this book ventures into the broader scope of our own "moving experiences" in light of the new millennium. Shuttleworth weaves together a multitude of fascinating moving claim stories with his own journey of faith, his Biblical views, and his original poems, in a book that will inspire every reader.
Book Description
In 1941, as a Red Army soldier fighting the Nazis on the Belarussian front, Janusz Bardach was arrested, court-martialed, and sentenced to ten years of hard labor. Twenty-two years old, he had committed no crime. He was one of millions swept up in the reign of terror that Stalin perpetrated on his own people. In the critically acclaimed Man Is Wolf to Man, Bardach recounted his horrific experiences in the Kolyma labor camps in northeastern Siberia, the deadliest camps in Stalin's gulag system.
In this sequel Bardach picks up the narrative in March 1946, when he was released. He traces his thousand-mile journey from the northeastern Siberian gold mines to Moscow in the period after the war, when the country was still in turmoil. He chronicles his reunion with his brother, a high-ranking diplomat in the Polish embassy in Moscow; his experiences as a medical student in the Stalinist Soviet Union; and his trip back to his hometown, where he confronts the shattering realization of the toll the war has taken, including the deaths of his wife, parents, and sister.
In a trenchant exploration of loss, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and existential loneliness, Bardach plumbs his ordeal with honesty and compassion, affording a literary window into the soul of a Stalinist gulag survivor. Surviving Freedom is his moving account of how he rebuilt his life after tremendous hardship and personal loss. It is also a unique portrait of postwar Stalinist Moscow as seen through the eyes of a person who is both an insider and outsider. Bardach's journey from prisoner back to citizen and from labor camp to freedom is an inspiring tale of the universal human story of suffering and recovery.

Interesting but not as insightful as the author's first book.......2004-04-01
Skip this book and just read "Kolyma Tales" or "Man is Wolf to Man." The author is genuine and sincere but rambles on endlessly about information that is quite boring and not pertaining to his life in the Gulag. It was difficult to follow his ideas after chapter 2.
