Book Description
In Seasons of a Family's Life, Wendy M. Wright— parent, Church historian, and follower of the contemplative tradition— offers a reflective, story-filled, and inspirational examination of the spiritual fabric of domestic life. This practical and insightful book explores family life as a context for nurturing contemplative practices in the home. Rooted in an appreciation of our deep and wise spiritual traditions that probe the sacred alongside everyday human experience, Seasons of a Family's Life challenges us to wrestle with the great religious questions that shape our lives and offers parents a model for integrating family life and spiritual awareness.
Every chapter in Wendy M. Wright's thoughtful book is a lesson in gaining an awareness of the joy in our experience as families and letting the sacred be more present in our frantically paced daily lives. Wright shows us how to pay attention to the silence that underlies our lives and encourages us to be sensitive to the ordinary moments that connect us. She reveals a family life replete with sacred spaces, rituals that enrich our time together, shared family stories, and much more. Interwoven throughout the book is a wealth of inspiring, personal stories.
Customer Reviews:
Realistic spirituality for families.......2007-03-12
Wendy Wright blends sophisticated theology with the practicalities of daily family life to encourage all to develop their spirituality in ways that are realistic and accessible. Excellent resource for spiritual directors, retreat leaders and general readers desirous of deepening their faith.
Beauty, Grace, and Poetry.......2003-04-18
Wendy M. Wright has done it once again. A fitting sequel to her memorable, Sacred Dwelling, Seasons of a Family's Life is a prodigious accomplishment. No other writer in spirituality today writes with the insight, beauty, grace, and poetry of Wendy Wright. She makes the ordinary, extroadinary, and the seemingly mundane, numinous. Wendy has the extraordinary gift of using her well-honed language to give meaning to life events we might otherwise pass by. She is self-revelatory and vulneralbe in this book, using her and her family's experience as a gateway to revelation of God and the Spirit all around us. One cannot help but go back and re-read her prose with the hope that some of its lyricism and beauty might linger in the soul. This is a book not to miss. It will give you a deeper appreciation of your own lived experience of family, and cause you to see things there you have never seen before. One can only wait with bated breath to see where this extraordinary author will lead us next.
Customer Reviews:
Nice, but short, and a bit dated.......2007-08-18
This is a very nice, albeit a bit dated, book on how to use basic old-fashioned sourdough (henceforth "SD") techniques in everyday cooking.
Included within are basic information on how to start, feed, maintain, and use a sourdough starter, and how to use it to make/leaven a wide variety of baked and griddle-fired fare, such as SD Bread, SD Pancakes, SD Waffles, SD Bannoks (oat cakes), SD Biscuits, SD Muffins, etc.
It's only 165 pages, granted, but rather than focusing on recipes to the exclusion of all else, it covers TECHNIQUE, so that you can work on your own without a net, and adapt other recipes you find elsewhere to the SD technique.
It's a spiffy little sleeper of a book.
p.s. Word of warning to would-be homebrewers, meadmakers & winemakers ... sourdough cultures are a source of airborne acetobacter and other wild microflora, which will require you to keep your fermenting beverages as FAR away from wherever you store your SD culture as possible, so that they wont be tempted to turn to vinegar, or pick up other annoying and obscure fermentation 'sicknesses'. You will also need to pay very careful attention to sanitation and sterilization techniques for same.
A Must have Sourdough Book!.......2005-12-27
If you've ever had the desire to make sourdough bread, than this is the book for you. If you're a newbe, only been doing it awhile, or you've been making sourdough bread for years, well, this is the book for you as well. Though it was written thirty-five years ago, a better book sourdough recipe book has not come out since. Not in my opinion anyway. In Chapter One Mr. Wilford says that this book is for gourmets and average homemakers alike. He also states that the most important ingredient in bread making is patience and I'm here to tell you that that is oh so true.
One would not think that one would need to learn about kneading the dough, punching it down or forming the loaf, I mean, how hard could it be? Well it's not hard to do it wrong. A few paragraphs on each subject will have you doing it like a pro, like you've been doing it all your life. And once you have the basic technique down it's time to make your starter and once you do that you can get into batters for waffles and pancakes and then it's yum yum all the way, breakfast will never be the same. I'm a big fan of Sourdough Bannocks (oatcakes) and Sourdough Squash Pancakes, both recipes are included here along with many other pancake and waffle recipes. Then there is the Sourdough Brandy Pecan Waffles and the Sourdough Chocolate Dessert Waffles if you're into desert, and who isn't?
And bread, there are enough delicious bread recipes to keep you going for a long time, everything from Sourdough White Bread to Sourdough French Bread and plenty others in between. Don't forget to try the Sourdough Pretzels or the Sourdough Crumpets. And don't forget to pick up this gotta have Sourdough book if you can find it. You'll be mighty glad you did.

Of All My Sourdough Books, This One is Used Most Often.......2003-12-31
OK, so I'm a sourdough baking freak. I have a dozen or so books on the topic, and this book is by far the most useful and the most used. I got mine in a kit bought 15+ years ago in San Francisco, along with a long-departed starter and a crock. I will need to buy another, soon, as with the other reviewer, my copy is WAY beyond worn out. The recipe for Sourdough White Bread 1 is worth the price of the book alone.
I'm glad to see this book is back in print, as I have been looking to replace my copy for some time.
Excellent resource and cookbook.......2002-01-20
I'm a beginner to bread baking and for whatever reason, decided to try sourdough. This book has been perfect for me as a beginner. The first part of the book, clearly outlines the chemistry involved in bread baking and getting a starter going. It then details the various steps in making the "primary batter" as well as bread baking, even outlining how to knead dough for french bread. This is such a great reference for anyone at a beginner level and the recipes are easy to follow and produce a great end result (although some may be a bit odd; Cranberry Sourdough Bread wasn't quite up to par). I highly recommend this book if you're trying to learn about sourdough baking.
Wonderful sourdough instruction.......2001-12-04
I love this book and I use a couple of the recipes all the time. I especially like his method of using batter "A" and batter "B". It's wonderful because I never waste any of my starter in order to feed it. The batter bread is my favorite. With my particular starter strain, the bread comes out about the same consistency as a regular dough bread. It's delicious. The recipes are amazingly easy and delicious.
I highly recommend this book to people who are learning about sourdough. It's the only book you'll ever need.

Misleading Title.......2000-03-18
This is a good book for those gardeners with lots of experience under their green thumbs. However, being a novice, first time gardener I did not find much useful `growing' tips here. Of the 200 tips I found only 1-2 dozen tips that actually pertain to the beginning and raising of plants. The book is loaded with suggestions for designing garden layouts (aesthetic), plant combinations for color, contrast, texture and form. The author gives numerous suggestions for different species of perennials, and some of their characteristics. If you are like me, a first time gardener, looking for tips on growing in general, I would not recommend this book. I just want to grow a few Ipomoea (wink) violacea in my back yard and this book is not very helpful. If however you are experienced and have a yard full of perennials already, if you are looking for new color schemes, garden layouts or yard presentation, then this book is more geared toward you.

Customer Reviews:
No Bribe Needed Says Marshall D. Rosenberg.......2007-03-09
The topic is of great importance and the message is clear.
This book(let) is not widely useful with very young kids, but I like to have the non-violent communication luggage on board early on; I am sure it will come in handy once my kids grow to be the age that I be tempted to threaten or bribe them! However, I think I need to read some more of Rosenberg's to fully understand his paradigm and communication guidelines.
Straight forward.......2006-03-19
It's probably stuff that we wall already know but it's phrased in such a simple & straight forward way that I felt coached and supported in my parenting.
Trenchant tome.......2005-08-21
This is a very concise little book that is written in friendly, conversational prose, as if the author were a good friend talking to you on your couch. As a busy, attachment-minded mother, I liked that it took me only half an hour or so to read, but I found myself spending more time reflecting on the lessons in the book because they were not what I was accustomed to thinking, even with my education and training as a psychotherapist. For example, our purpose-driven, aggressive society is not used to taking the time to speak very consciously and be aware of all the judgments we automatically make in our minds that manifest in our speech. This book is about becoming more aware of how we treat our children (we would seldom treat even a stranger with the everyday brusqueness and condescension we show our children, for example, the author states). I liked the small examples of everyday life that the author takes from his own experiences with his children. He talks about how our requests for things are actually thinly guised demands, and writes, "One of the most unfortuante results of making our objective to get our children to do what we want, rather than having our objective be for all of us to get what we want, is that eventually our children will be hearing a demand in whatever we are asking." The problem here is not honoring people's autonomy, which is an innate human quality that becomes threatened whenever we sense we are being forced or pushed into something. To become more effective, compassionate parents who enjoy our kids rather than resent their "disobedience", the author show us ways to guide them in life while respecting their autonomy and basic human needs to make independent choices. The author wisely distinguishes between age-appropriate choices within their reach -- the toddler, for example, who, when given the opportunity, after being role modeled generosity by his parents, chooses independently to share candy with his siblings -- and those choices that are non-negotiable, such as playing in the middle of a busy street.
Though I haven't yet mentioned it, my favorite part of the book was learning about how just about every painful or uncomfortable emotion we experience is an unmet need. This shifts the thinking away from evaluating children and ourselves in a moralistic sense and moves towards "a language based on needs". Inside the back cover of the book is a helpful table listing emotions we feel when our needs are not being met, and very simple and respectful ways we can ask others to meet our needs without trampling upon theirs.
Book Description
Tragedies such as the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, are but the tip of the child-violence iceberg, says noted family psychologist and best-selling author John Rosemond. Over the past 35 years, the rate of violence and aggression on the part of children has risen at least tenfold, affecting children across the demographic spectrum. Rosemond turns his critical eye to the various theories proposed to explain this trend-from the notion that violence is a matter of genes to the ubiquity of violence in the media-and comes to a startling conclusion: The problem has much to do with bad advice from child rearing experts. Progressive parenting practices, as promoted by mental health professionals for more than a generation, succeed at enlarging children's self-esteem, but fail to teach them self-control. The end result are epidemic numbers of children who feel great about themselves, but have little regard for others-children who've been given everything they could possible want, and little of what they truly need, especially adequate discipline. Rosemond empowers parents to take the bull of modern child rearing by the horns and tame it by focusing on teaching manners, character, respect for others, and self-control. Consistent with his previous parenting best-sellers, Raising a Nonviolent Child is short in theory and long on the sort of practical, commonsense advice he's built his reputation upon-advice that promises to reassure and empower today's parents and set America's children back on the proper course.
Customer Reviews:
Every Parent Should Read.......2006-08-01
This book is excellent as most of Dr. Rosemond's book are. I enjoyed the easy read nature of the book.
He gives specific ways to help your child get rid of bad behavior. This was very helpful to me. My daughter has improved behavior because of his suggestions.
I highly recommend this book along with all others by Dr. John Rosemond.
A Long Column.......2001-02-01
The mother of a 4 year old boy and infant daughter concerned about the level of violence in television programs and toys directed toward children, I bought Rosemond's "Raising a Nonviolent Child" to learn how to lessen the impact of such violence on my kids. Rosemond's book is written in an easy-to-read manner, but ends up long on chat (like an overly long column) and short on cites. Nevertheless, Rosemond's opinion on methods of parenting and discipline, as he has shown in other successful books like Parent Power, is worth something standing alone. An emphatic reminder that we, as parents, are the first line of defense against the violence marketed to children, Rosemond's book does a nice job discussing the importance of teaching children personal, task and social responsibility. His ideas regarding limitations to be set on video games, computer use and television are also quite helpful. One need be neither Judeo-Christian nor an arch conservative to see the value of some of Rosemond's views on parenting however, and it would have been nice not to have to wade through Rosemond's rather strident (and often offensively presented)political beliefs and his personal religious beliefs to get to his larger point regarding the benefits of authoritative, as opposed to authoritarian or permissive parenting. I would recommend people buy Parent Power, which covers much of the same ground and is available in paperback -- and skip this latest book which doesn't add much that is new to Rosemond's previous body of work.
life experience *is* data.......2000-12-06
"Data" is only as good as its control group or collector. Life experience *is* data, and as a parent, you will offer what *works for you* to other parents.
Like Mr. Rosemond, I usually offer "personal perspectives" in the first person, not because I'm so self-centered that I think my own experience is all that matters, but because it's *my* perspective, from my own experiences. I can't project how a person will handle any given situation, and as long as *I'm* separate from *you*, we'll never have identical perspectives. We will, however, have similar experiences from time to time. Just as something someone has said to me will help me wade through my own muddle, I hope that others can draw on my ponderings when they need it.
As for parenting books in general, I read them for guidelines, evaluate those guidelines and use them as I see fit. Although not all of us are biological parents, we are almost always entrusted with *someone's* children at *some* point in our lives, and I do recommend Rosemond's book for preparing for such times. His suggestions for re-empowering the mothers provide tools for setting and maintaining our own personal boundaries among "children" of all ages.
mostly more of the same.......2000-10-08
This latest in a series of books by Mr.Rosemond is a bit disappointing, especially for long-time readers of his other books and columns. I find the re-run anecdotes and columns tedious, the writing a tad sophomoric. The anecdote of his "call of nature" in an Alabama school restroom was just one example, and one I would have liked to have been spared.
The topic of kids and violence is certainly one on the minds of most parents. And it is an easy read, and entertaining. I would have liked to have seen less personal anecdotes and more of the real research and studies that are out there; that he seemed to gloss over, in favor of levity.
The book does contain useful information, especially towards the end. I had the thought that if he BEGAN again, with the ending of this book to begin a new one and fleshed it out a bit more, it would have more of an impact. This is a good basic book, but I would have liked it to have been a bit more scholarly.

Book Description
1999 Winner of the Minnesota Book Award!
Violence is all around us-war, terrorism, street crime, child abuse. Children are bombarded by violent TV shows, movies, and music. Parents fear for the safety of their families, and are alarmed when they see their own children acting out in aggressive ways. They wonder, "How can we raise our children to live according to our best spiritual values?" As a family counselor and leader of workshops on raising nonviolent children, Michael Obsatz has identified twenty-one skills that parents and children can learn together for self-protection and for relating to others in loving ways. Each short chapter includes advice for parents, a word to children, and a variety of interactive activities by which families can practice these important skills and learn to live as peacemakers in God's world.
Customer Reviews:
Universal principles.......2000-04-06
While written from a Christian perspective, Dr. Obsatz's21universal priciples transcend the boundaries of religion, race andsocio-economics-as does this issue. His practical advice gives those of us desiring healthy children, families and relationships an easy to follow framework.
Customer Reviews:
A Timely Read!.......2002-03-11
The information Dr. Muscari provides in this book is excellent! The book is extremely easy to read and a timely piece. Any one who has contact with children of any age, or thinking of starting a family can benefit from the information within the book not only in how to raise a non-violent child but in raising a child in general. As older parents this book provided us with up to date jargon and information important for communicating with our child/adolescent. We especially liked all the bulleted, to the point, information on what to do with and for your child as well as how to handle situations that arise with your child. We also found that the information is helpful for us in how to interact with other kids who may be displaying inappropriate behavior. This would make a great gift at baby showers, and should be in every pediatrician and family physicians' waiting room. This is a book you wish you were given when your child was born! We would love to see more books on issues in kids from this author. Don't miss buying this book!

Storaro: The Elements .......2005-05-17
I saw this book, which might have been pretty good like the
first book in this series,But Storaro for some reason makes
double exposures for most of the frame blow ups
Why I don't know,Its really strange,the films don't look
that way.

Book Description
Three-Time Oscar-Winning Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro’s Stunning Book On His Work In Such Films As Apocalypse Now, Dick Tracy, and The Last Emperor
Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro has worked with some of the most extraordinary film directors of our time—including Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty, and Carlos Saura—to make some of the most breathtaking films of our time. Over the course of his remarkable thirty-five-year career, Storaro has brought visual life to many of the films that have become centerpieces of contemporary cinema.
Inspired by a gamut of sources, from Italian Renaissance paintings to Francis Bacon to esoteric primitive art to Tarzan comics, Storaro’s visual palette is as diverse as his films are eclectic and gorgeous. Now, for the first time, this master of cinematography outlines his personal philosophy of light, color, and the elements in an unprecedented three-volume opus, Writing with Light. In this first volume, Storaro considers the use of light, manifesting his ideas through his own writing, related film stills, a stunning selection of paintings, and a vast array of quotations from a myriad of philosophers. Together, these components interweave to express Storaro’s unique, philosophical, and powerful vision.
Storaro’s films include The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, 1900, Reds, One from the Heart, Tucker, Dick Tracy, The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha, Tango, Bulworth, Goya in Bordeaux, and Dune.

A book that should have been much better.......2004-06-19
Storaro always got the finest looking prints and lab work,
and his films are stunning ,But the reproductions in this book
look like as bad as the video for "1900",They are printed on
nice paper in a nice hardcover, but the source for these images
is pretty poor,
I would love to see what a 4000 line scanned capture from
the original source would look like printed the same way.
But that would mean getting Studios like Paramount involved,
Which might mean that the book never came out.Since they
can't even be trusted to release his best work on dvd.
It seems odd that Storaro who seems to demand such high Quality
from his labs, would Ok such poor reprints of his films.
Still with so many of his films unavailable on dvd,This Book
is still worth getting.
From shadow and penumbra to multiform light.......2003-07-26
Writing With Light is a brilliant coffee-table collection of masterful photograph capturing the essence of light, from shadow and penumbra to multiform light, the sun, the moon, and the infinite. The bilingual text in English and Italian fully complements the vivid images, ranging from art, to scenery, to still frames from movies. Writing With Light is an unforgettable visual celebration and one which is especially commended to personal, profess-ional, academic, and community library collections.
A beautiful book and a must have!.......2003-02-25
for any aspiring cameramen, this is a must have book, Storaro's work is both visually stunning and inspiring, and it is about time that a book celebrating the works of this great master of cinematography is made available.

Book Description
A foreword by Frank R. Zindler describes the relations of the never-excommunicated Catholic Adolf Hitler with two popes and his comment that "Luther, if he could be with us, would give us his blessing." A reprint of a book written during the last months of the war in Europe, the book discusses Luther the man, his unstable character, his often treacherous actions, his views and teachings on marriage, truth, the state, war, the Jews, the peasants, and Germany. The growth of the unrealistic, positive legend of Luther is examined, with a concluding essay "From Luther to Hitler."

Objective and historically accurate.......2007-01-16
It seems to me that there are many here who treat Luther as a demi-god. To them Luther could do no wrong because he saved us from the big, bad Catholic Church.
I am tired of people apologizing for Luther's comments, saying that he is being taken "out of context". How do you take it "out of context" when you read that Luther said that we should round the Jews into their synagogues and burn it down? Is there a way that can be taken in a nice way? I have read how the apologists for Luther explain away his quotes, such as when he said we should "sin boldly". It doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
Or how can this be taken out of context?
"Christ committed adultery first of all with the woman at the well about whom Saint John tells us. Was not everybody about Him saying: `Whatever has he been doing with her?" Secondly, with Mary Magdalene, and thirdly with the woman taken in adultery whom He dismissed so lightly. Thus even Christ, who was so righteous, must have been guilty of fornication before He died"
How can that statement be taken out of context? How can it be, within the right context, that it is all right to say that our Lord was a fornicator?
The author was not a Catholic. He did not have an axe to grind. He does nothing but quotes from Luther to speak for himself. The quotes are extensive. Even if half of the can be explained away, it still shows a very dark side to Luther.
By contrast, the apologists for Luther are Lutheran or at least Protestant. I would like to see a non-Protestant defend Luther. Then their arguments would carry weight.
Luther was a very complex individual. One minute he could write something very beautiful, the next minute he could write something very ugly. His apologists try to explain away his uqly quotes. His detractors ignore his
beautiful quotes. But the truth is that he was capable of saying both.
Historiographical Accuracy.......2003-01-21
Any person who has read Wiener's book and taken it at face value needs to read the book written in response to it in its historical context. Gordon Rupp's book, "Martin Luther, Hitler's Cause of Cure: In Reply to Peter F. Wiener," 1945, dismantles Wiener's thesis by: showing his use of quotes out of textual and historical context; his use of English translations of Luther taken third-hand from German-to French-then to English; dependence on secondary sources, and his failure to follow the development of Luther's thought. Luther has been blamed for many of the world's ills, isn't it time the blame be placed on the right sources and writers work for resolution of the problems instead of using Luther as a "whipping boy."
Unlike Wiener and Hitler, Luther did some good in his life.......2002-02-15
!!!!
Mr. Wiener is playing on people's ignorance of Martin Luther to sell books.
Just looking at the photo on the page is enough to convince any thinking individual that the author has an obvious ax to grind and is willing to try and color the publics rational thought process by any means, especially guilt by association, to effect a negative opinion of Martin Luther, the great Protestant reformer whom we owe so much to this day.
Martin Luther was one of the most courageous spirits in human history who at the same time never lost his humanity. When all the world was sucked up into Catholicism's inconsistencies and power, Martin Luther stood alone and said God was not owned by the Catholic Church, thus allowing a freedom that had been denied to Christians for hundreds of years before and enjoyed hundreds of years afterwards, to this day. Perhaps the freedom we now enjoy is enjoyed too recklessly and in vain as evidenced by such books as Wiener's.
It is absolutely asinine to try to link Martin Luther to the holocaust and Hitler.
Martin Luther in truth was the spiritual ancestor of nearly e-v-e-r-y-one today. Hitler distorted so many truths and perverted every good thing he could, falsified so much and smeared so many, I don't see how you can blame the victims of such mischaracterizations or use them as a scapegoat.
Even the Bible has been used for evil. I don't see how any one can blame Martin Luther if Hitler found something in Martin Luther's writings to pervert. But that is the book game these days---try and smear someone's good name in order to sell books.
After a while those who are truly interested in the truth will understand what a grave injustice Weiner has tried to do to a person who has done so much for humanity, even still today, while others like Wiener are only interested in destroying for destructions sake which leads you to ask the question, "Is Hitler Wiener's ancestor?"
Controversy comes in small packages.......2001-07-03
"Hitler's spiritual ancestor" is a short book that tackles some very large questions. The author Peter Wiener wrote the book towards the end of World War II and was a Christian of German origin. The huge questions that he tackles include: "How could the German people allow Hitler to lead them into a war that was so brutal, destructive and remorseless?", "Who was Martin Luther...really?" and "What part did Martin Luther's teachings play in the horrific genocide of the second world war?". Although the author doesn't answer all these questions completely (then again who could?), he brings up some excellent points and allows the reader to "see for themselves".
This work does not portray Luther as the "Great Reformer" that many theologians remember him as. The author does an excellent job of portraying Luther with 'warts and all' and he does this by using Luther's own writings against him. He argues that Luther set the scene for the bloodiest genocide in human history. His teachings, and his philosophy were instrumental in paving the way for a German nation filled with people that had a warped idea of Christianity and humanity. In fact the author portrays it as a "pseudo-political German religion" that puts the nation first and Jesus second. After hundreds of years of being indoctrinated by Luther and his unbelievable theology, it is no wonder that the people of Germany were so easily able to accept Hitler and his maniacal, nationalistic ideas of ethnic cleansing.
