    Book Description

    Volume I of a two-volume set

Joseph Fouche (1763-1820) was head of internal security for Emperor Napoleon. He was noted as an anti-cleric, banned and repressed publication of books, was responsible for mass shootings. The former school teacher became Minister of Police, only to be fired by Napoleon in 1810 when it was discovered that he was holding secret talks with foreign powers. He was later re-instated. He became president of the commission ruling France for a short time following Napoleon's final defeat, was an enemy of Robespierre, and was also largely responsible for the repressive censorship of books and periodicals under the Empire. He was a master of intrigue, espionage, and self-preservation.

The implacable inspector Javert in Victor Hugo's Les Miserables is based in part on Joseph Fouche: "He commenced his career as a revolutionist; voted the death of the king; betrayed the Republic to Napoleon; broke his faith to the usurper, then to the Bourbons; then again to the hero of the Hundred Days; he was venal, mendacious, disloyal, corrupt to the core; and all this he carefully points out to his readers 'in the spirit of candour.' His memoirs are indeed no less amazing than instructive reading, and in them will be found the history of the first Napoleonic Empire with a cynical frankness little less than revolting." - Daily Telegraph

His memoirs were long thought to be fake but modern research has shown these memoirs to be authentic.

        Book Description

Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer is a remarkable figure, both in the development of mathematics and in wider Dutch history. A mathematical genius with strong mystical and philosophical leanings, he advocated the intuitionist view of mathematics and science as a constructive mental activity. This drew him into a discussion with David Hilbert, the leading advocate of the formalist school, about the nature of mathematics, a debate which made Brouwer a legend during his lifetime. He also contributed significantly to research in topology, and was a member of the socio- linguistic Signific Circle. As well as his diverse mathematical interests he had a great impact in wider Dutch society. His keen sense of justice made him a party in many conflicts, both scientific and political. He would often be involved in controversial issues, such as the campaign to undo the boycott of German scientists, and this made him a figure both of admiration and embarrassment in his native Holland. Although his abilities won him offers from prestigious universities such as Berlin and Gottingen, he preferred to stay in Amsterdam, so that he could pursue a life of quiet unconventionality in the artist community at Laren. This book provides a sophisticated analysis of this crucial era of mathematical research, but also gives an important insight into the wider life of one of the most fascinating characters involved. This book is available at the specially discounted price of L49.95 to customers in the Netherlands.

5 out of 5 stars The Type II Diabetes Cookbook: Simple and Delicious Low-Sug.......2001-10-16

This is a wonderful book. It has useful information about diabetes, including the effects of stress. It contains many useful charts. One of the best features of this book are popular recipies that have been adapted for a diabetic diet. You don't have to sacrifice enjoyment in order to eat well.

It does contain ingredients that myth declares taboo. This book will show you how to use foods in a healthy way. If you are using books that were written 10 years ago, I would replace them with this and similar books. This book is up-to-date with medical findings.

        5 out of 5 stars A Diabetic's Look At The Book.......2005-08-02

Since I am diabetic and overweight I have tried all the classic diabetic recipes and found them all to be tasteless and time consuming to prepare. Ms. Lund's recipes use products you have on hand and the resulting meal has both taste and is quick to prepare. It is important to me that I don't have to spent hours preparing it and it satisfies my hunger for things I shouldn't have. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is diabetic and especially those who are classed as "border-line" diabetics.

4 out of 5 stars A good, simple start to Low Fat cooking!!.......2003-02-11

I really like this book and would recommend it to anyone who is especially just starting to eat a low fat/low sugar diet.
It may not be "gourmet" food, but it is great tasting, easy to prepare food...and you can find all the ingredients in your local markets.

One of the best parts of the book, believe it or not, is the information in the beginning pages on how to substitute low fat ingredients for fattening ones! You probably would never think the low fat substitutes could taste so good but THEY DO!!!

Try the book, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars very good recipies.......2001-07-20

I have tryed several recipies from this book, all were very good. The cherry pie filling is especially good! Its hard to find deserts to make that my husband can eat that taste so good.

Bread's history has frequently been a recipe for disaster. The well-baked loaf--aside from being the main event in one of the major food groups--has caused wars, supernatural visions, festivals, and plagues. H. E. Jacob's celebratory book toasts bread from its earliest beginnings in Egypt, where it was one of the treasures entombed with the dead, to the author's own experiences in a Nazi concentration camp, where a bread made of sawdust kept him alive. The maker of paupers and kings, our daily bread and its evolutions are deliciously described in this illuminating text.

        Book Description

Yeast, water, flour, and heat. How could this simple mixture have been the cause of war and plague, celebration and victory, supernatural vision and more? In this remarkable and all-encompassing volume, H. E. Jacob takes us through six thousand dynamic years of bread's role in politics, religion, technology, and beyond. Who were the first bakers? Why were bakers distrusted during the Middle ages? How did bread cause Napoleon's defeat? Why were people buried with bread? Six Thousand Years of Bread has the answers. Jacob follows the story from its beginning in ancient Egypt and continues through to modern times. The poignant and inspiring conclusion of the book relays the author's experiences in a Nazi concentration camp, subsisting on bread made of sawdust. (6 X 9, 416 pages, illustrations)

4 out of 5 stars Rise to the occasion.......2007-05-15

I purchased this book as documentation for a paper I am writing on bread in history. I already have The History of Bread by B. Dupaigne, and English Brad and Yeast Cookery by E. David, and World Sourdoughs by E. Wood. This book gives a unique perspective on the common man and his bread thru history. It does stand alone, but is a lovely companion to those I already have.

5 out of 5 stars Bread as a catalyst for civilization.......2005-07-30

I had always known bread was a staple of life. Rarely has a day gone by when I have not consumed it in one form or another. But I had no idea what an important role it played in the development of historical record.

Jacob's poetic prose is sometimes tangential, but he delivers such fascinating tidbits that a reader cannot possibly mind the distraction. In explaining the development of bread in ancient Egypt, where it originated, he says: "The threshing floor is the battlefield between the tenacity of the stalk and men's hunger for flour."

I recommend that you read this book curled up in a cozy chair with a cup of tea and a fresh, warm slice of rye. Your view of history is about to be changed.

        5 out of 5 stars Multi-faceted book-wow.......2005-02-23

As a bread baker, I read this book anticipating information on bread through history. Who would have ever known that bread was so important. What a bonus it was learning about agriculture, religion, politics, literature , etc. and their connection to bread. It was facinating how the author found so many connections to bread, which was obviously more important in history than it is today-(referring to low-carb craze). The first 90 pages are a "tough-read", but it gets easier. I have purchased 6 more copies and am distributing them to friends. A very valuable book in my estimation. The deceased author (book published in 1944 and translated from German for the current edition)would have been quite surprised to see what has happened since 1944. If writing more chapters after 1944, he would certainly need a chapter on "chemical bread"-bread on the grocer's shelf that has a 30 day shelf life due to addition of anti-molding agents (sounds healthy doesn't it) requested by the grocery chains. It smells awful. Anyone that loves history, religion or agriculture would certainly find this book enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on World History.......2003-06-06

I picked up a copy of Six Thousand Years of Bread in an anitque shop. It sat on my shelf for years. I finally read it. WOW! What a fascinating look into the history of civilization-all based on grain and bread. According to H.E. Jacob's convincing theories, the rise and fall of nations is all attributed to grain and bread. H.E. Jacob, a Nazi Germany escapee is an excellent writer and the book reads like an intriguing mystery novel that spans 6,000 years.

It was published in 1944 and ends it's story during WWII. I would love to see it revised and expanded to include new discoveries about history and to bring it 's story into the 21st Century.

3 out of 5 stars Philisophical, but outdated as a reference book........2001-12-16

This book discusses the history of bread from the viewpoint of western philosophy. That said, the earlier cultures (such as Egypt, for example) are not Western by nature -- and so a Judeo-Christian approach is applied to some societies that was not necessarily a part of them originally. It is more a modern interpretation of said history, which makes this a perfect book if you're looking for that. However, the title and the back of the book are misleading about this for the most part, unfortunately. I was expecting a very different book from the one I received. As I said before though, other readers may be pleased with the content. Your mileage may vary, as the saying goes.

After rereading the book, I noticed that the sources in the back are from the very early 20th century, and indeed, some from before. None were dated past around 1940 or so. Curious, I checked out the copyright date -- it's the early 1940's. So as a purely historical reference this book is indeed outdated. It's a shame; as if a revised and rewritten attempt were made it would be a delightful historical reference.

That aside, if the history of food is a turn on for you, and especially the philosophical thoughts on food and society, this would most likely make you happy. It was not a book of pure trivia and history, which made me a bit sad since I've been looking for a good one about bread for a while now. My recommendation is checking it out at the library, and then give it a whirl if it catches your fancy.

                            Book Description

As research has begun to show, a surprising amount of gardening folklore is true. An apple a day helps keep the doctor away--apples contain pectin, which has germicidal qualities.

Roses love old banana skins near their roots--the skins contain phosphates, calcium, magnesium, etc., in which many soils are deficient.

If you cut yourself badly, wrap yarrow (achillea) round the wound--yarrow contains blood-clotting chemicals, which stop bleeding.

Tips from the Old Gardeners offers hundreds of good ideas (and a few not-so-good ideas) about what to plant and where to plant it, which plants and animals will ward off garden pests, and which plants can serve as homeopathic remedies, plus quite a few belly laughs for contemporary gardeners--"if you want to know when to sow, take your trousers off and sit on the ground!"

We have had 43 presidents and I am sure that a book could have been written with thousands of questions about them, this book only has 101 and I was amazed and how tough they were.

The other books in the series seemed relatively easy compared to these questions. The only thing I saw was that there was no pictures of the presidents and this should be a part of the book.

The book does provide some new material and from the reading I don't think there was a question on each president. Overall another good book to add to the reference library.

You watch the History Channel and you see the inventors and inventions. Now you have book that has you questions about those Modern Marvels.

The book only has 101 questions and no pictures. This is okay but I was hoping for a little more as was my kids. The book does have some challenging questions, even for adults.

One thing I liked about the book is that you could use it as a game and get points for the ones you answer correctly. Overall it was entertaining and enlightening.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little book about war trivia........2003-06-24

I love history and over the past several months have been reading more and more books on U.S. History. I found this book to be a fast read and be entertaining at the same time.

Like the other in the series the book is limited to 101 questions, and I found it to be written to a younger crowd, although there were a few questions that caught me off guard.

The books covers most American conflicts and wars, but remember there are only 101 questions so it will not delve too deeply to any one area. Overall very good for those wanting to learn about the past.

4 out of 5 stars Short on questions but great on history........2003-06-24

Another installment to the Great American History Quiz series of books and like the others there is only 101 questions to work with. The book I found was more trivia type of questions rather than questions about History specifics.

As with other book in the series, there is no pictures and for the young readers this may be a drawback as something are better identified by sight.

Overall a good book for those rainy days when you need something to read or that car trip. The book is great for all ages as I found a few questions challenging.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent trivia quiz.......2001-06-06

The History Channel has put together an interesting American History trivia quiz that consists of 101 questions with subsequent answers on the next page. This reviewer played a game against her husband as we tried to see who could answer the most over a week's time. The book is fun and enlightening, especially for trivia buffs.

If you liked Bill Silliker’s book Uses for Mooses, you’ll enjoy this book, as well. It is a masterful combination of humour, popular culture, and education -- all related to everyone’s favourite animal: the moose. Most of the book is about how humans have reacted to moose and the many odd things that have been done in the name of moose, from beer branding and the naming of U. S. Air Force squadrons to recipes for exotic cocktails, such as Moose Milk. In addition to the late Bill Silliker’s fabulous photos of moose, you’ll find some serious animal behaviour information about Alces alces written at a very accessible level, including such topics as mating habits, habitat range, and size and weight ranges.

been said to be beneficial for roses, and that horticulturists now approve the practice? Or that mulching strawberries with pine needles will improve their flavor? Or that hollyhocks thrive on beer? Maureen and Bridget Boland have been collecting garden wisdom for many years, both from "old wives" and from books ancient and modern. In this charming little volume, they pass on the best of their store of useful and curious information. It will be seized upon with delight by all gardeners who are not afraid of finding a sprinkling of superstition mingled with much good sense.

                                        Book Description

The Trouble with Plants is unique. Out has gone the traditional recipe for a garden plant guide, plant directory or plant encyclopaedia of compiling a plant's cultural details into a dry and dusty list, decorating with a stock colour photograph, and repeating for 10,000 plants. Instead here's a book that pioneers a radical new recipe for each of maybe 200 popular plants from 100 or so genera. To a simple base of cultural details add the author's personal experience of growing them. Stir in a generous measure of trivia, either directly or peripherally connected to the name, folklore, history and usage of the genus. Spice with a dash of the author's own wry perspective, and serve in digestible portions. The result is destined to please the palate of most gardeners, and perhaps even some non-gardeners too.

                                        Book Description

When I was sixteen, I held my dad's hands while on my knees pleading to God for him not to die. "Dad,dad, dad," I cried out, as he lay there on his back with his hands and fingers in firm position grasping the reins of a five gait mare.He was in a place of contentment as he spoke,"Whoa mare, that's a girl!" and made those familiar clicking sounds I often heard when I was a little boy watching him ride the horses everyday in the summer. Then in a calm moment, with his hands gently relaxed in mine, his face revealed a soft smile and he took his last breath and his last ride. My father, Thomas Downing was a horse trainer, one of the forgotten horsemen who was raised in the Saddlebred kingdom of North Middletown Kentucky. He had a natural, uncanny and remarkable gift of relating to horses, proven by the trust and confidence exhibited by the horses toward him. Although my dad was a man of few words, his true voice, a voice that spoke volumes, was spoken within his work and accomplishments with the horses he trained. He often preferred to spend time with the horses over most people and it was that bond which enabled him to train the horses so effectively. This book is about a summer weekend I spent as a ten year old boy helping my father at a horse show and the invaluable lessons of life I learned from my dad and his fellow forgotten horsemen, who a contemporary of theirs called them, " Great Men with Great Horses". It was over this weekend I would learn more about my father, horses, and life than I ever thought imaginable.

Enjoyed the book..thought it was a little shallow... ...but good reading ... being a horseman myself you could tell the man that wrote it was NOT a horseman.

5 out of 5 stars A unique window into history and an introduction to some truly great men.......2006-05-09

I have always been interested in the idea of a biography of the common man - and that is sort of what I expected from the pages of A Forgotten Horseman. As it turns out, however, the subject of this book is both a common man and a quite extraordinary man all rolled into one. I was really pleasantly surprised by this book, as it turned out to be even more interesting and educational than I expected - and it succeeds on a number of levels. First and foremost, it is, as the subtitle indicates, "a son's weekend memoir," a tribute to author Lee E. Downing's father and a special "coming of age" weekend he was able to share with him as a child. It's also history, telling the story of "The Forgotten Horsemen," African-American men in and around North Middletown, Kentucky, who forever shaped the profession of American Saddlebred horse training, men who were among the best in their profession yet never received the credit due them for no other reason that the color of their skin. As such, the book also provides a uniquely personal insight on racism and segregation as they existed back in 1959. Additionally, in the setting of a prestigious horse show, the reader gets quite an introduction to the art and science of horse training and showing.

For young Lee Downing, the prospect of working alongside his father over the course of a weekend culminating in the prestigious Canfield Fairground horse show was a very big deal. Not only did it allow him to spend time with his father and watch him do the work he did best, it gave him the opportunity to actually feel a part of his father's world and to discover how it feels to get paid for doing a job. He expected to be excited about this new experience and to learn a lot about horses, but he had no idea just how important a weekend this would prove to be in terms of the rest of his life. Decades later, the things he learned from and about his father during that special weekend continue to mean so much to him that he chose to share the experience with others - and I, for one, am quite glad he did so.

It is inspirational to watch Thomas Downing and his fellow horse trainers take such pride in their work and to show such love for their horses (including a sick disgust with the barbaric training short-cut of "soring"). Even though he knows he will never be recognized for what he does (at least outside of his circle of contemporaries), Thomas Downing shows his son the importance of taking pride in your work and in yourself - even if society treats you as less than equal to others. It's more than just a work ethic, however, as the father instills in his son the insight that the hardest things to do are also the right things to do.

The book provides the reader with three subtle but telling viewpoints on race and racism. In the stables, we see all of "the forgotten horsemen" as they truly were. To young Lee Downing, these men were all awe-inspiring yet surprisingly real. To be welcomed into this powerful circle was the thrill of the young boy's life. When the white owners of the horses come in, we see a different side of Thomas Downing; he and the owners interact in a professional, mutually respectful, friendly way - yet an invisible glass separates them from true positions of equality. Then the place of African-Americans in larger 1959 society is illustrated, subtly yet powerfully, during the trip to the Fairground, as two white gas station attendants relax out front while the African-Americans have to pump their own gas in back of the station.

This memoir/biography/history should have great appeal across a broad spectrum of readers. You certainly don't need to know anything about horses to enjoy the book. Downing presents the material in a wonderfully compelling way that all but takes you back there to that distant time and place with this special group of men. I daresay the story may take many a reader back to his own special memories of time spent with his father, and the common sense teachings that young Lee Downing absorbed over this memorable weekend are as practical today as they were back then. What really stands out to me, though, is the all but unknown history of the "Black Horsemen." With the publication of this book and other ongoing efforts, one can only hope that these "Great Men With Great Horses" finally get the recognition they deserve.

4 out of 5 stars 'Memory is the only way home'.......2006-04-26

The above familiar adage gently describes the poignant core of this very fine new book A FORGOTTEN HORSEMAN : A Son's Weekend written with such touching sincerity and tender style that it becomes more than a book about a child's coming of age: this is a tribute to those who came before and to those who have benefited from the dignity of some fine men.

Author Lee E. Downing, a retired educator, uses the format of a memoir to recall the moments of looking through the window of childhood into the world of becoming a man. And as is indicative of this writer's style, he opens his story in a classroom when after giving his students instructions for an exam, he sits and gazes out through a similar window into memory.

The topic is a weekend when Downing accompanied his horse trainer father on a trip to compete with horses trained by his father and his friends. In relating the events around the weekend, Downing not only gives us a history of the Saddlebred horsemen (with the star Tom Bass a legend among the African American men), but he also tells of the fascinating preparation of the horses for running - the care, the bathing and grooming, the warm-ups, the compassion for these creatures of nature, etc - which he learned that weekend in the presence of his father and comrades. All of that is superb writing and most informative, but for this reader that portion of the book is secondary to the real messages Downing so discretely shares.

This is a story from the year 1959, a time before the major changes in race relations had occurred, a story related by a young boy learning the pains of prejudice, inequality, and yet the enormous dignity of the genteel men surrounding him with tales on this single weekend. In his father's words, 'Always remember, Lee, the most difficult things to do are always the right things to do,' and this very basic moment of advice serves to introduce the author to the manner in which his father and friends have coped with the life of African Americans during their childhood. And by being accepted into the inner sanctum of the horsemen as an equal that weekend provides the door to Downing's step into manhood and has supplied him with such profound memories that he ultimately elected to share them with us.

This is the time of memoirs and a time for critiquing people's lives through the written word, whether fictionalized, embellished, or challenged by the media for the sake of publicity. Lee Downing's 'memoir' pleads the case for a different classification: Downing gives us in a short 200 pages a frozen moment in time that changed his life and his view of his universe. It is one of those stories like those spun at night, in the firelight, in a gathering of loved ones, in a suspended moment of remembrance. This is a wise, well written, beautifully shared experienced, one from which we all can grow. Recommended for all readers. Grady Harp, April 06

Jammed with excruciating details, Professor Horsley has expanded what might have been an enthralling monograph into a boring book. The text is appropriate for New Testament scholars, Biblical archeologists, and serious students of nascent rabbinical Judaism. However, for those of us, who are merely ordinary mortals, the text is simply burdened with too much repetitive minutiae.

4 out of 5 stars The Bible and Scientific Discoveries.......2000-08-10

The history and scientific answers are found and talked about in Richard Horsley's newest book. Richard Horsley confronts contoversial biblical figures such as Jesus and the rabbis. In the Gosples and the Talmud(Jewish Oral Tradition) discuss the differences between the teaching of Jesus, and the Jewish religion and Oral Tradition summitted by Moses. The Gosples portray the Jewish religious attorities as hypocrites, liers, greedy, and lost without G-d.

In return the Jewish point of view concerning Jesus is equally worthy of being looked into. Judaism, and it rabbis rejects Jesus as the Messiah, Son of G-d, High Priest, final sacrific, and G-d in the flesh. In fact many rabbis have incouraged isolation between the Jews and gentile Christians.

But in spite of the "rivalry between the two relgious traditions the one question remains is; is it true? Did the Jews and Christians come up whith away to trick the word? Did Jesus really walk the face of this Earth? What about the Jewish rabbis? Were they around in the days of Jesus, or is this one great big hoax. Richard Horshley attempts to crush all doubt concerning this ancient biblical oddicy.
