Christi.......2003-12-31
I think the author done a wonderful job on his first book. The story is very interesting and realistic. The book keeps your full attention the whole time. As a reader you can't wait to read what happens next with the Smith family. Good job and keep up the good work.
Captivating.......2003-10-09
This was a captivating story. I found it hard to put down. It's a story of Blair Smith as they grow up in a small town in Virginia
during the 30's and 40's. As he shares his experiences you get a snapshot of life as it was during that time in history. A good read.
I would highly recommend it.
Heart Warming Memories.......2003-09-11
This is a wonderful story the was quite enjoyable to read. Mr. Smith paints a vivid picture of the life he experienced growing up in a small town during the 30's and 40's. His words take you on many adventures he witnessed as a young man, and you find yourself wondering what will happen next.
Very impressive for his first book, keep 'em comin! You know your reading a great book when you find it hard to put down.
A True Story about three Brothers Growing up during WWII.......2003-09-03
"My Brother, Your Father" is the true story about the Clayton Smith family and their three sons who grew up in a small railroad community located in the western mountains of Virginia during the Great Depression and WWII. Their struggles, their sorrows, their joy and the way that it was as seen through the eyes of their middle son, Blair. The book answers the questions,"Who protected the good old USA soil while our boys were fighting on foreign soil and what was it like to grow up in a country that dedicated 100% of it's resources to Victory?"
The book also takes you through the Korean War period, life in a military school, life on a diesel submarine, life in college and finally the families of the three Smith sons and the decisions they made that would forever change their lives!
It's a great read. I could hardly put the book down!

Millions of people seek ways to relax, promote healing, or connect with their soul. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a simple but profound healing system that was originally developed in Japan. Reiki means "spiritual energy" or "universal life-force energy." The Reiki system is universal because it can be used by people of any background or religion. Reiki For Dummies explains how you can harness this energy for yourself.
Reiki For Dummies is a plain-English Reiki guidebook. Discover what Reiki is, where it came from, and how to:
- Find and get the most from a Reiki treatment
- Use Reiki to boost your physical and emotional health
- Locate a Reiki class and become a Reiki practitioner
Reiki For Dummies is amply illustrated and full of useful information on:
- Reiki symbols (plus nontraditional symbols)
- Reiki hand positions (for giving Reiki to yourself or others)
- Reiki for pets and animals
- Reiki for children and adults
- Reiki and surgery or medicines
- Reiki at birth or end-of-life
- Reiki in the house, in the car, or at work
When you're ready to go further, Reiki For Dummies covers: Western and Japanese Reiki techniques; crystals, long distance Reiki, and setting up a successful Reiki practice.

Outstanding reference guide!.......2007-10-02
I normally don't like dummies books but this is one of the best ones I have seen. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of getting into Reiki or who is just curious about healing, meditation or visualization type practices.
Comprehensive.......2006-12-06
Believe it or not, this is one of the best Reiki books i've found.
It's packed full of information, including Reiki history, Reiki principles, Reiki false beliefs, Reiki symbols, how to prepare to receive attunements and what to expect, step by step instructions on how to give healing sessions to yourself and others as well as information regarding the subtle etheric bodies, the chakras etc.., etc.. and much more.
The author clearly knows her stuff and is one of the more progressive Reiki masters, believing that Reiki should be affordable and available to all and that the Reiki symbols should be regarded as sacred but not secret.

Very informative.......2006-02-25
This reference book has a lot of little tidbits of information that some books will skip over or not go into enough detail for the regular person, like me, to be able to understand. Highly recommend it for someone who wants to broaden their learning.
Excellent Reiki book.......2006-02-23
I have read quite a number of Reiki books and this one is hands down the best all-around Reiki book that I have come across. It answered every single question that I have on Reiki. What I liked about it the most was the lack of "my way" in this book. Several ways of achieving the same goal are offered here so you are free to find your own style or method. So much information is packed into this book. Yes, the 4 symbols are included here and also several non-traditional symbols, including Karuna. You will not get attuned with this book, a Reiki Master Teacher must do that, but this book will be extremely helpful before and after being attuned to Reiki energy.
A great source of enlightenment and information!.......2006-01-24
Whether you have taken Reiki classes, received Reiki, or want to understand what Reiki is...this is the book for you. Clear and exact information for the well versed and the novice. I suggest this book for anyone with any desire to understand Reiki from the Root to the Crown.

Good range of recipes.......2002-10-11
I have borrowed this book so many times from my sister-in-law that I finally bought my own copy. While there are certainly recipes here that are more complicated, there are plenty that are easy, can be prepared several days before the party, and always get rave reviews from party guests. Plus the author gives good tips for us non-professionals about figuring quantities for parties, how to store the foods properly (so you can indeed prepare items in advance), suggestions on displaying each dish attractively, etc. The book not only includes pictures showing what the final dish should look like, but also has a whole chapter at the end on techniques for things like dealing with chocolate, pastry, pizza dough, and more--complete with pictures. Regarding the other reviewers' concerns about these recipes being too complicated for a non-professional, I think this book can help a non-professional put on a party that looks like it was catered, you just have to keep 2 things in mind as you plan your party & develop the menu: 1) Choose your recipes carefully, with most recipes requiring minimal preparation and only 1 or 2 requiring more labor, plus make sure that most of your recipes can be prepared a day or more ahead and only 1 or 2 that must be done right before the party. 2) It's always safer & less stressful if you test any recipe in advance rather than experimenting when the pressure is on.
The book is gorgeous!.......2000-02-26
This is one of my favorite books to look at. The pictures are incredible and I have made a few of the appetizers which were fabulous. But as the other review said, most recipes require more knowledge than I have and I try never to make anything too close to guests arriving at my house...too much room to screw up. I think the book is great and I'm glad I own it but for the average person looking for easy-to-do recipes, this book isn't for her.
Not for non-professionals.......2000-02-03
This book has wonderful photos; the food is dazzling and beautifully presented, but the execution is something else again. If you don't have at least some training, and (most importantly) don't have a slew of helpers, you would be well-advised to steer clear of actually attempting to make this stuff. The work involved will make you too tired to enjoy your own party.
Yes, you can make some things ahead and freeze them--but even then, it's hard for some of us to devote an entire weekend (or even an entire day) to cooking. The recipes I tried were both labor-intensive and very time-consuming. I picked up some great ideas for arranging prepared foods and fruit and veggie trays, and I will still enjoy this book as a reference for presenting food, but I doubt if I'll attempt to cook from it again. Whew!
Book Description
People who have faced death often speak of their lives flashing before their lives. Something much different happened to dolphin trainer Richard O'Barry when one of the dolphins that played Flipper on television died of stress in his arms. He realized that most of his career as an animal trainer had been a mistake and that dolphins have as much right to freedom as humans. He vowed not to rest until he freed every last dolphin that could be returned to the wild successfully. This is a true story that will move not only animal lovers but everyone who loves a well-told tale. Ric O'Barry had everything-money, flashy cars, pretty women-but it wasn't enough to keep his conscience at bay. He began to understand that dolphins were easy to train because of their great intelligence, not his great talent, and keeping them in captivity was cruel and morally wrong. While research and entertainment are important to human life, they are not worth the cost to these beautiful and gentle animals.O'Barry was arrested trying to free a dolphin, but that didn't stop him, and he now devotes his life to untraining dolphins and returning them to their natural habitats. Once the pride of the billion-dollar dolphin captivity industry, he has since become its nemesis.

Captive dolphins need to be free.......2007-09-01
I think this book is well worth reading. I am a person that use to love marine parks, however my view has changed. Much is do to this book, plus my own research on the web. I have found out that most dolphins & whales in captivity don't live very long. There are exceptions like Miami Seaquarium's Lolita the killer whale. She is old for a captive whale, however she lives in a tank without other orcas & the tank is way too small, among other things. Do your own investigation on the web about her terrible living conditions. Ric O'Barry has been trying to do the right thing for dolphins which is freedom! He was Flipper's trainer. I don't agree with some of Ric's personal beliefs, however he is right on about dolphins. How you can support marine parks after reading this book would be extremely difficult. I have been on whale watches and if done properly, I feel are a better way to see God's creation. Ric says the best thing regarding marine parks is "Don't Buy a ticket". These dolphins are not fed enough so that they will do tricks. Read the book, then you decide!
Flipper.......2006-04-02
This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. It should be read by anyone who loves animals and who believes in animal-rights. Besides that it is an interesting autobiographical sketch of Richard O'Barry and gives you a closer glimpse of people like Dr. John Lilly. It also gives one an idea of how films like Flipper are made and what becomes of the poor dolphins in the end.
Dolphins are way too smart to be entertaining Katie Couric.......2002-04-08
I read the other reviews, 2 of them raved about the book and one sounds like it was written by a dolphin catcher with a Phd... I read this book and then went to the Flipper Productions Dolphin Encounter near Nassau in the Bahamas, even encountering at least one of the dolphins mentioned in the book. Every celebrity you could think of had their picture in the photo shop with dolphins. The Phd was right about the book jumping around too much. It would have been nice for continuity to hear more about his wife and how her role in his quest for example after we are introduced to her in the begining and then she is hardly mentioned through the rest of the book. This said I have to say that he is right about dolphins in captivity. I had a blast, selfishly, swimming with, dancing with, kissing and hugging dolphins- I can't wait to visit again... but it quickly becomes obvious that they are way to intelligent to be doing tricks for tourists or for Katie Couric for fish. And they are better off being free to swim in the open ocean than being trapped in penned in areas for "research" and "education".
A COMPASSIONATE LOOK AT DOLPHINS.......2000-06-16
A wonderfully compassionate look at dolphins in captivity from an ex-industry insider; inspiring story that makes you want to change the world for the better.
A look at marine animals in captivity........1999-05-19
Although it has been several years since I read this book, it made a lasting impression on how I feel towards captivity of marine and other non-domestic animals. In addition, it opened my eyes to animal neglect and, by my defination, cruelty. For those that love animals, it's worth finding!

Customer Reviews:
Light on the visuals, heavy on text.......2001-05-11
I was curious about what kind of garden publications Chronicle Books would be putting out so I bought three in the series; Water Gardens, Paths and Walkways, and Small Patios. I think if I had seen these in the bookstore I would've probably put them back. I was expecting something a little heavier on the visuals from Chronicle Books.
But the examples are interesting. Nice range of elements, and tending to favor the quirky in design. The author describes the garden element in question (depends on which book you have) and uses one overall photograph and two detail shots. The detail shots seem there mostly for atmosphere and to break up the page. She also includes a one-page, how-to discussion, and a list of tools and materials.
I'm not looking forward to all the reading.
The poetry & practice of water gardening perfectly combined........1998-03-25
I was delighted by this book. The lily pools in my garden are choked and leaky, and I've been tempted to give up and fill them in. (If only dirt wasn't so expensive.) Then along came this book to remind me why I built them in the first place and give me some ideas about how to revitalize them.
Ms White understands the balance of art and science in a garden. Her writing is joyful poetry, evoking the music of dripping, splashing, gurgling water and how it can soothe a tired spirit or simply cool you off on a hot day. But she's not just a garden dreamer; she knows how to get her hands dirty, too. Each water feature "recipe" includes a complete list of the tools and materials that you need for the project and clear, easy-to-follow directions.
Some gardening books (like the Sunset books) get the directions right but miss the romance (or confuse it with trendy hype). Others don't see the manure that the lilies grow in. Not this book. The author knows that a fountain must be level to make its music, and she tells you how to build it that way. She knows that even a tiny still pool can incubate a host of annoying mosquitoes, and she provides several control methods. For every poetic image, there's a piece of nitty-gritty advice. She has even rated the recipes by difficulty and cost.
Mr Plut's lovely photographs and Mr. Bullen's simple, elegant design make this book a treat just to look at. And on a tactile level, I enjoyed the creamy-feeling soft cover with its flaps that eliminate the need for bookmarks. The quality of this book belies its relatively low price.
I've spent three evenings dreaming and scheming my way through this book. Now I've got to roll up my sleeves and get to work. I think I'll start with that "Easy" bucket under the rosebush.

Book Description
How did Nazi persecution affect the later lives of children and young adolescents? In Light from the Ashes, eighteen eminent social scientists trace the connection between their early wartime experiences and their adult research careers, personality, and values. Autobiographical essays describe their trauma of fleeing from or surviving the Holocaust during childhood or adolescence, and how this influenced their eventual choice of work and general outlook on life.
The introductory and closing chapters set these narratives in historical and theoretical context and discuss their broader psychological and social implications. A unique feature of the book is that its contributors were children or adolescents when they became targets of Nazi persecution. Each chapter covers the contributor's experiences during and after the war, his or her professional education, development, and activities, and the perceived connection between those factors. The wider impact of the early years on adult attitudes, political orientation, ethics, religion, family life, important values, and personality characteristics is also discussed.
The book will be of primary interest to psychologists and to literary scholars interested in narrative and autobiography. It will be relevant to historians, sociologists, and philosophers of science, especially social science; and to scholars and researchers of all disciplines interested in the impact of traumatic violence, dislocation, war, persecution, and emigration (particularly, but not only, related to the Holocaust) on the subsequent lives of children and adolescents. It will also be valuable to psychologists, psychiatrists, and other scientists working in the field of stress and coping.
For the general reader, the book offers the reminiscences of articulate and introspective people who as children experienced a wide variety of adverse circumstances and responded to them--then and later--in a wide variety of mostly adaptive ways. Readers intrigued by first-person narratives of war, persecution, and resilience will find the book of great interest.
Peter Suedfeld is Professor of Psychology, University of British Columbia.

Enlightening for both reader and writer.......2001-10-18
Light From the Ashes arrived as I was watching the latest news about the U.S.'s war against terrorism. I have often wondered if war were declared on the U.S., as it has been declared on so many other nations during my lifetime, how I would "survive." I fear the struggle to survive almost as much as I fear death. Light From the Ashes gives new insight into what it takes to survive war, deprivation, persecution and other horrors of war and holocaust. While many who survived the Nazi Holocaust as adults have written and spoken of their experience and its affect on their remaining years, few, if any have spoken and written of the experience as a child or adolescent. This collection of how those early experiences may have shaped the choice of career in the social sciences is monumental is helping me understand the term "survivor." The essays are literate but completely comprehensible to the layman. The insights into the life of each contributor and editor (also a contributor) comes to light in some cases because they were asked to participate in this volume. It is a timely work, and, I am sad to say, will probably never be out of context in our world.
