Book Description
en Ho Lee, a patriotic American scientist born in Taiwan, devoted most of his life to science and to helping improve U.S. defense capabilities at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Then, in January of 1999, everything changed and he was accused of espionage by members of Congress and portrayed as the most dangerous traitor since the Rosenbergs. He was even told that their fate-execution-might well be his own. For the first time, Dr. Wen Ho Lee chronicles his experiences before, during, and after his imprisonment. He takes you inside Los Alamos, describes the false charges leveled against him, and tells how his career and life were threatened and his civil rights taken away. A riveting true story about prejudice, suspicion, and courage, My Country Versus Me is a vitally important book for our time.

WOE IS ME.......2007-05-11
This book is a self-serving woe-is-me diatribe against the US government because it dared to charge a non-white individual with the crime of espionage. Lee claims this happened to him by virtue of the fact that he is Chinese, and in spite of the fact that he is a naturalized American citizen. Hence, the title.
First, I do not consider naturalized citizens to be American in the full sense of the word. It is simply amazing that people like Lee get hired to positions such as the one he held.
Second, having served in the US Air Force with a top secret crypto clearance, I know from experience that people working in the intelligence community are very aware that they are not to share any sensitive data with anyone unless he/she has the appropriate clearance as well as "the need to know." Yet Lee downloaded all kinds of classified data onto his home computer, a huge no-no for anyone working with sensitive data. And why did he do so, pray tell? What was he going to do with the data he stole? Are we to assume he had no intentions of sharing this information with anyone? According to Lee, to think otherwise makes one a racist.
Third, when the story first broke in the media, I knew it was only a matter of time until Lee or his attorneys would play the race card. If you go to Lee's website and check the names of those that have signed a petition in behalf of Mr. Lee, you will notice that the vast majority are Chinese. How many of these signatories put their names on the petition out of a knee-jerk tribalistic instinct rather than through a sincere effort to discern the truth?
And now we have the case of Chi Mak, a Chinese-born engineer recently found guilty of handing over classified data on electronic propulsion systems for stealth submarines to the People's Republic of China. One wonders why Chi Mak did not play the race card as did Lee. One wonders how many signatories to a petition he could garner from fellow Chinese living in the United States. One wonders what he was doing in such a position to begin with. Maybe we'll find out when Chi writes his book.
Take with a grain of salt - .......2007-04-12
The book is an interesting account of Lee's "persecution", but anyone who reads the book without understanding that the author is writing about HIMSELF - not exactly an impartial source for the facts - will come to the conclusion that he was a victim of an insane government.
If you don't have time to read the book, here's a synopsis - The US government knew that classified material was getting from Los Alamos to China, and targeted me for investigation not because of my admittedly suspicious and illegal activity but because I'm Asian.
Shameful government accusations.......2006-12-20
Mr. Lee is an amazing author and does an excellent job portraying the "all-righteous" government so many americans think that we have in this country. The truth is that corruption does exists, which is evident in all of the ways that the FBI, DOE, courts, and all of the other Federal organizations dealt with Mr. Lee. My hat is off to him for his courage, fortitude, and skill in creating a wonderful written work straight from his heart.
Guilty (and Punished) Until Proven Innocent.......2006-11-10
In December 1999, when the threat to national security posed by Elian Gonzales had yet to be discovered and neutralized by the Reno Justice Department, another plot, equally dastardly, was uncovered by the FBI. Wen Ho Lee, a Taiwan-born American, was found to be working at the Los Alamos National Laboratory alongside America-born Americans on our nation's most sensitive nuclear secrets. With an alacrity that impressed even Reno's political opponents, the FBI clapped Lee into leg and arm shackles and an orange jumpsuit and put him into solitary confinement in a prison in Santa Fe. In so treating him *before* he had committed his crime, Reno was able to stop him from doing the sorts of things that Timothy McVeigh and Ramzi Yousef had done to get themselves the same sort of rough justice. Of course, Mr. Lee is not happy about these preventive measures, and it shows in his book, but the reader must keep in mind that he was born in Taiwan and doesn't understand our ways.
It is distressing to all patriots that a judge ordered Mr. Lee's release before the Justice Dept was able to fully punish him for what they thought he might have done. Lee's lawyers cleverly played on the so-called "no evidence" loophole to get him sprung after a mere nine months in prison.
Espionage and treason investigations are usually begun when there is evidence of a government employee in a sensitive post spending beyond his or her means: Clyde Conrad with his stash of gold coins; Ed Wilson with his vast Virginia real estate holdings; John Walker with his yacht. Lee's lawyers were able get him freed on the "no evidence" technicality before the FBI had time to find out what it was about Mr. Lee's lifestyle that made them understand that he was a spy. We know now that his stated hobbies of gardening and fly-fishing might well have been covers for illicit activities. Rare coins, might have been buried under the carrots. The whereabouts of an excellent trout pool in a New Mexico creek might have been only the first in a long line of secrets that Lee might have disclosed to the Chinese communists.
Given that the FBI was not accorded sufficient time to uncover his crimes, the whole investigation appears to have rested on Mr. Lee's own admission of the fact that he was born in Taiwan, which has a clear link to China, which in turn is one of our nation's greatest enemies. It sends a chill down my spine to think of how many others might have used the "great scientist" guise to spy on us. Albert Einstein, to name only one, was allowed access to some of our most sensitive data on physics relating to atoms and neutrons and so forth, and no one seems to have noticed that he was born in *Germany*, one of our chief enemies in Europe during World War II. He managed to infiltrate the community of America-born scientists and might well have passed on a massive amount of vital intelligence to his erstwhile compatriots, the Nazis. In fact, it's no exaggeration to say that if he'd been properly incarcerated like Mr. Lee, the war in Europe might have ended many months sooner.
He had it coming.......2006-01-02
Like Mr. Lee I hold a top secret clearance and I'm an Asian-American. What I don't understand is why Mr. Lee kept some contacts with foreign nationals by attending unclassified seminars/ meetings. These kinds of contacts are frown upon. Even though the information in his papers was deemed unclassified by LANL, he should have known the mere act of these exchanges raises red flags. Was he showing off his knowledge by presenting his technical papers? He should have been less naive about the whole business of working in a top secret environment. Was he naive or stupid? It's people like him that give Asian-Amricans like me a bad name and puts us under severe scrutiny.

Portable Pilates - Book and CD Set
Level: Slow Intermediate
DON'T JUST READ ABOUT IT, DON'T JUST WATCH IT ON TV....DO IT!!
Pilates is probably the most sophisticated and sought after form of exercise today. Since the 1920's it has been used to strengthen and stretch the bodies of professional dancers and athletes alike.
Now, after 75 years, Pilates has become mainstream finding its way into people's homes through dozens of how to books and videos. Yet, these instructional materials are incomplete.
This CD provides the missing ingredient. It allows you to take an actual mat class under the direction and motivating voice of an experienced instructor with no equipment, no pages to turn and no TV required.
Portable Pilates is a 45-minute mat class as taught at the Pilates Center of New York - Tribeca Bodyworks. Owner and certified instructor Alycea Ungaro conducts the class in clear, easy-to-follow instructions. Original music and creative sound effects provide the student with the necessary cues, tempo and dynamic of each exercise.
NOTE: This item is intended for those with prior Pilates experience.
From the back cover:
"For a model, Pilates is the perfect workout. It has given me long, toned muscles more synonomous witht he elegance of the runway than the bulk of the gym. Best of all, Alycea makes it fun to do."
- Molly Sims, Victoria's Secret Model and Host, MTV's House of Style
"Body parts . . . . (no names mentioned), have found a higher place thanks to Pilates"
-Laura Day, Author of Practical Intuition and The Healing Circle.
Customer Reviews:
I can't imagine why it's called "slow intermediate".......2006-01-31
Well, the intermediate part is right, although some of the moves are more properly termed advanced. However, I completely disagree with the 'slow' part: she went so fast I couldn't keep up, and I had taken about a dozen Pilates classes and am generally in a decent shape. The thing about Pilates is not to go fast, but to do it right, and put effort and thought into each move - there is no time for those things on this CD. I suggest Brooke Siler's CD and books instead.
What a brilliant idea!.......2005-11-27
It is just such a brilliant idea, to put an audio-CD with a book that includes really motivating and cute pictures. The spiral binind is excellent, the CD is motivating (however, if the excersices had been divided into different tracks it would have been even better. Now, the whole session is put on one track). As many have pointed out before, it is liberating not having to watch a TV-screen all the time for the excersice.
I have done several mat-classes before (although not with Ms Ungaro) and also in reformers (one-to-one)according to the Stott-Pilates program. I have also read a couple of books about the method before. So was rather familiar with Pilates before I bought this CD. It is definitely necessary to have some previous knowledge about Pilates before buying it.
I have to say that even though I have both the NYCB Work out 2 DVD, and the Portable Pilates, I am more inclined to do the Portable Pilates, simply because it is so relaxing and easy to just pop the CD on your player and start. You are focused on the movements and the voice instead of executing the movements, listening AND watching. I just hope that there will be another one out soon!
Excellent!.......2005-01-12
I bought this set about a year ago and (try to) use it a couple times a week. Alycea is the perfect instructor: upbeat without being an annoying cheerleader, giving you cues and pointers just when you need them, someone you wish could come to your house every day to give you personal instruction.
I had never tried pilates before, but had taken similar classes (callanetics, lotte berk) so I was fine without a video. Honestly, I think it's a lot easier to follow the cd/book than it is to focus on form while staring at the tv, craning your neck out of position or having to stop the video every couple of mintues while learning a new exercise.
Best of all, this goes by very very quickly. I also tried Stott Intermediate Pilates and that thing went by soooo slowly I could never make it through to the end--not b/c I was tired but b/c I was so darn bored.
Highly recommended.
the best complement to a Pilates class!.......2004-05-04
The book and cd is wonderful for people who have taken Pilates classes and want to practice at home. The movements are at an beginner-intermediate level, so I recommend some classes or a real beginner video before starting. I really like the set because I can still do Pilates at home even when I don't want to go to the gym.
It is just what it says - PORTABLE.......2003-08-08
I've been attending "Authentic" Pilates mat classes for a while and picked this up to supplement. I first listened to it in the car, just to hear what she says and presents and it's very similar to the one I attend (though without the French accent). It's good to have experience with Pilates before using this, as having someone adjust your positioning the first few times really helps you to make sure you get it right. And the descriptions in this book and on the CD seem to assume you have had experience with the movements.
But, if you want an instructor you can take with you on trips, or when you're not having classes so you can get in your workout and not slack off, this is a great thing! I'd be interested to see more like this!

Book Description
This exuberant, delightfully unconventional cookbook is a warm, personal collection of recipes and reminiscences of the author's native Tuscany and a guide to a spontaneous way of cooking based on good taste and common sense rather than rigid rules.
In A Tuscan in the Kitchen, Pino Luongo, the creator of New York's successful Il Cantinori restaurant, presents 140 of his favorite recipes, from soups and antipasti to salads and desserts. The recipes include such tempting dishes as trout with balsamic vinegar, peasant-style risotto made with sausage and peas, roasted quail with tarragon, spaghetti with sea bass sauce, radicchio and orange salad, and baked peaches stuffed with walnuts and chocolate. Interspersed throughout in a spirited narrative are tales of his adventures as well as stories of family celebrations and the local traditions of the people who live in Tuscany's dries, hill towns, and fishing ports.
Mr. Luongo shows us how to cook the Tuscan way, using a small repertoire of ingredients and a few basic techniques to create dishes that taste delicious and can be endlessly varied. The ingredients in each recipe are broken down into a three-part list: pantry staples, like olive oil, pasta, and canned plum tomatoes; cold storage items such as eggs, butter, and cheese; and a handful of market foods that need to be purchased fresh. In the recipes, he gives basic instructions and guidelines for making each dish but does not give exact quantities. For instance, a recipe for tagliatelle with fresh garden vegetables suggests a variety of vegetables and herbs; the cook decides how many and how much of each to use, according to taste. Mr. Luongo teaches us the kind of flexibility good cookshave always practiced and encourages us to create our own personal style of cooking -- and have a wonderful time in the kitchen, too.
Filled with warmth and an irrepressible enthusiasm for life's pleasures, A Tuscan in the Kitchen is an original and inspiring cookbook.

Simple, delicious recipes.......2007-06-09
This book teaches cooks how to create delicious, seasonal foods out of simple ingredients. He also includes stories linked to the traditions of Tuscany. It is an unusual cookbook in that Pino Luongo doesn't include amounts of ingredients but that seems to aid in the educational process. It's okay to make food based on taste rather than exact amounts. I definitely recommend this cookbook.
Refreshing, fun, delicious.......2001-07-11
Pino is so refreshing, so much fun. His recipes have no quantities. Forget that, he says, be creative, abandon your inhibitions, trust yourself. A good Italian lesson in or out fo the kitchen! Although I'm an average cook, I find his recipes straight forward with ingredients organized in three columns--pantry, cold storage & fresh from the market. He chats away with you on little tips like how to make your bean salad ever stronger tasting, on episodes from his childhood, on the Tuscan way of life in the old days. With the polenta recipe you read about the "heartbreaking imagination" of the poor people who made endless varieties of polenta dishes for all three meals. He makes you laugh throughout the book with tales like his first kiss with his face among the stinging nettles--just before the grilled vegetable recipe. A full of life book! You'll have a good time cooking and soaking up the Tuscan culture around food and love. What else is there?

Placed in Tuscany.......1999-12-16
I bought 'Tuscan in the Kitchen' years ago and find myself turning to it continually. I have tried 99% of the recipies and find each one bursting with flavors not found in any local retaurant. Measurments for the ingredients are not given, leaving the recipe in the hands of the cook. This requires a bit of wisdom in cooking and inspires all sorts of improvisation. Not for the beginner! But worth the fun.
My favorite cookbook from a library full of cookbooks !!.......1999-09-17
I went away for a year and left my books with my sister. This book was in her kitchen and it took me another year to get it back from her. The recipes are the finest and it was only when I lent it out and was told that there were no measurements that I became aware of it. Mr. Luongo instills in us the instinct to cook these dishes ... through his words, stories and pictures. The meals that I've made from this book are my kitchen regulars ... I can't wait for a nice cold day to make the "Stracotto" again. It is a leftover that I dream of all day long!!
THE BEST.......1999-03-18
I have enjoyed using this cookbook for almost ten years. Not only is the book visually beautiful, with wonderful anecodtes, the recipes are amazing. The stains on the pages attest to that. More than a few of the recipes have become my "comfort food" favorites, yet they still draw compliments when prepared for guests. Pino Luongo has taught me a philosophy in cooking that has spilled over into all of my food preparation--and I thank him for it. This book is a joy to read and especially to use.

Book Description
Intrigued with the possibility of integrating texture in his work, American landscape photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum has a long-standing collaboration with the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute (SERI) in China. This splendidly designed volume describes the history of SERI with illustrations of its traditional embroidery and then proceeds to pair Ketchumís stunning photographic images with their exquisite embroidered counterparts. Essays locate the achievement of the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute within the context of traditional Chinese embroidery and trace the willingness to innovate that has long characterized this remarkable institution.
Customer Reviews:
ok - but a bit overrated I think.......2004-09-02
I bought this book, sight unseen purely from the rave reviews listed. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the book. Firstly, Robert Glenn Ketchum's photographs are very average. In fact any 15 year old with a good camera and decent eye could take photo's of this quality. The thing that redeems them is the skill of the needleworkers. Secondly, I just think the book is overated. There's several western needlework books that cover this type of embroidery and have better images in my opinion so I just don't understand the rave. An interesting read, but..........yeah. I wouldn't have paid this much if I'd been able to flick through it first.
Most embroidery doesn't impress me, but............2003-08-17
I'm not all that interested in embroidery, but I enjoy visual excitement. One day while gallery hopping, we came upon a small portion of the work depicted in this book. We were both blown away by the work! Absolutely amazing. I would really like some posters of this work.
For those interested in the embroidery details, it is done with fine silk threads, hand dyed, on various fine fabrics, some of which are so fine you can see through them. Much of the interesting texture and effect is from what they call random stitch embroidery, in which the scenes are depicted by various colored stitches .5 cm (1/4 inch) long running in various random directions, yet they all come together to make the image. Other parts of the images are done by carefully controlled stitch direction to give crisp images. They pick up the light and are quite luminous, some are displayed as screens with light coming from behind. Only the enlargements in the book give a sense of the beauty and amazing technique of the actual pieces.
Oh, and the book is good too. Definitely a 5 star quality coverage of the work, with background information, as described in other reviews. But the work itself is beyond 5 stars. (In the gallery they were priced around the $10,000-$150,000 range, some took several years to complete.)
5 is not even close to enough.......2003-07-09
Words cannot even begin to describe the beauty of the works of art contained in this book. If you only ever buy one book in your life to just look at the pictures let it be this one. I could sit entranced by this embroidery for hours. I agree with another reviewer who stated that you can't conceive of this art being created by human hands. If you need proof simply look at the cover. That is not a photograph folks, it is embroidered.
The photographs are also quite beatiful. Consider as you look at them that the photo's are trying to capture texture...something very elusive in that medium. In many cases you can barely tell the photo from the embroidery and in others the embroidery is an interpretation of the photo.
I cannot state this enough... this book is truly, truly extraordinary and I don't think that there is anything else like it out there.
WOW!.......2001-09-18
This is, by far, the most beautiful embroidery book I've ever seen anywhere, at any time. It seems impossible that such impressive works of art could have been created. Robert Ketchum's photographs are beautiful, but the embroideries are, indeed, so breathtaking that it's hard to believe real human beings could have worked on them. This is the kind of embroidery I would love to be able to do, but it is so amazing that I know I'll never reach such a high level of expertise (at least not in this lifetime). My thanks to all the people involved in this project for sharing their special gifts with me and anyone else fortunate enough to have purchased this book or, better still, to have seen these works in person.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Most Helpful In Assessing Allegations of Abuse.......2004-04-02
Of all the books addressing this complex area in Child Custody Evaluation, this text is the one I found most helpful. The author's use of nine hypothesis for testing the information gathered in the evaluation is the central theme in using this text. Allegations of child abuse in family law conflict are some of the most sensitive and important questions an evaluator ever faces. The stakes are very high for everyone, especially the children. This text has a very rich array of current research and demonstrates a comprehensive and insightful knowledge of this field. In completing a recent evaluation, I found this text extrordinarily helpful.
The Best Text in thhis Field.......2004-03-27
Assessing Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse is easily one of the best researched and practical texts in this field. In an arena fraught with landmines, Dr. Kuehnle provides a balanced roadmap for assessing these allegations and protecting children. I particularily like and value the nine hypotheses she uses as a framework for analysing the data and making a balanced, thoughtful recommendation.
Of all the many texts I have read in this field, this one is clearly the best.

Frederic Goudy deserves to be remembered........2000-10-03
There's much more to the type of Frederic Goudy than Goudy Oldstyle, and you'd be suprised at some of the familiar typefaces that came from his hand. He created over 100 types, including what is now known as Berkely and Copperplate. Most designers are lucky if ONE of their types finds its way into common use. Goudy has at least ten. This is a facsimile of a volume that appeared in Goudy's lifetime. My only complaint is that I wish it had been reproduced on letterpress -- printed pages produced by modern means do not carry the same authority, or produce the characteristic relief of the old printing methods. Nonetheless, we are fortunate to have it available.
