Book Description
Known as "the Ralph Nader of psychiatry," Dr. Peter Breggin has been the medical expert in countless court cases involving the use or misuse of psychoactive medications. This unusual position has given him unprecedented access to private pharmaceutical research and correspondence files, information from which informs this straight-talking guide to the most prescribed and controversial category of American drugs: antidepressants. From how these drugs work in the brain to how they treat (or don't treat) depression and obsessive-compulsive, panic, and other disorders; from the documented side and withdrawal effects to what every parent needs to know about antidepressants and teenagers, The Anti-Depressant Fact Book is up-to-the minute and easy-to-access. Hard-hitting and enlightening, every current, former, and prospective antidepressant-user will want to read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Breggin is not what you think.......2007-03-05
I do own a number of Breggin's books and I like his overall viewpoint. But, more recently have come to realize that in many respects he is an unscientific zealot. For instance, in 2005, a court disqualified the testimony of Breggin because it did not meet the scientific rigor established by the Frye Standard. The judge stated:
"...Breggin spends 14 pages critiquing the treatment provided not because it ran counter to the acceptable standards of care, but because it ran counter to Breggin's personal ideas and ideologies of what the standards ought to be."
In yet two other cases:
A Maryland judge in a medical malpractice case in 1995 said, "I believe that his bias in this case is blinding. . . he was mistaken in a lot of the factual basis for which he expressed his opinion."
In that same year a Virginia judge excluded Breggin's testimony stating, "This court finds that the evidence of Peter Breggin, as a purported expert, fails nearly all particulars under the standard set forth in Daubert and its progeny. . . Simply put, the Court believes that Dr. Breggin's opinions do not rise to the level of an opinion based on 'good science'."
____________________________
Again, Breggin makes some very good points, but he seems to be on a crusade. I think a more balanced book is "Blaming the Brain" by Vaillant. He is a true scientist and researhcer (in fact a Ph.D.) and he is much more fair. In fact, he explicitly states that he is not totally against psychiatric medications.
The other VERY important point here is not to confuse SCIENCE and MEDICINE. The former being a set of prinicipals and methodologies seeking the "truth." MEDICINE on the other hand is a "craft" and an art, which sometimes incorporates science and other times is less scientific. However, this criticism against psychiatry is unfair in that the same critiques can be lodged at any medical doctor within ANY specialty, not just psychiatry. Medical doctors in all specialties prescribe medicinces all of the time for "off label" uses because the drugs work for that symptom or disorder, depsite the fact that the doctor has not the slighest clue why it seems to work. The important point here is that psychiatry in itself is a field of medicince and I do not believe proponents ever claimed it to be a branch of science.
In any event,I do agree with some of what Breggin says, but I think a better and more balanced read is "Blaming the Brain", as I noted above.
Facts everybody must know.......2006-06-25
Dr. Peter R. Breggin's work is excellent. Drugs are KILLING many people before their "natural" time to die has come. Breggin can help persons to stop killing themselves with those horrible medications. Read the book and get better without drugs.
Total Garbage.......2006-02-10
If there is anyway to make a quick dollar today, its for some moronic MD to write another book about the use of anti-depressents. I really wish that people would stopped reading this garbage, and just do what they feels is right, and stop believing everything someone says just because they have the letter MD in front of their name. The reason I take this personally is that I have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and these drugs have saved my life. I have tried everything, from exercise, to herbals, to vitimins, to theropy, and even though they help, w/o the drugs, I am unable to function. Yes, it is true, these are some strong drugs, and doctors do Overpriscribe them, yet at the same time, they can do wonders for people who dont react well to "Alternitive Theropy" so the person can live a normal life. Every drug has side effects, and little is known about long lasting effects. Does this mean that people with other diseases shouldn't take Meds, should they sufefer and Die because of side effects from Meds, or do you take a chance and possibly live longer. DOnt believe the hype with these [...]. The human brain is still the one body part that doctors are still puzzled with, and little is known of why stuff happens to it. Take your meds, dont suffer, live longer, and tell Peter R. Breggin to go [..](oh yes that is anger created by the use of Effexor..)
Some Balance Please!.......2006-02-01
I did not read this book,(so cannot truly rate it) but read the description and all of the reviews. I am currently taking an antidepressant and it's working well for me (the generic of Celexa.) I have suffered from low-grade depression for most of my life, with a few major crashes over the years. I do believe it's from a chemical imbalance, contrary to what Dr. Breggin may purport. And I think it's always interesting when so many who make comments seem to have not experienced depression or ever used antidepressants. If, however, I had a child who was depressed, I would NOT want them to use psychotropics unless they absolutely could not function without them
The real problem is not antidepressants or other psychotropics, but the misapplication and over-prescription of them. Those with garden-variety depression need to do their research before taking any antidepressant, even when your well-meaning primary care doctor may be more than willing to give you a prescription (they don't really have the time to talk to you.) You may simply need some counseling or behavioral therapy. On the other hand, if you have a long-term depressive history (as I do) it may be a good idea to look into the possibility of antidepressants. Again, do your homework. We are our best health advocates. And you will need to consult with a psychiatrist who has more in-depth knowledge of psychotropic drugs than your primary care physician usually does (and "your doctor won't tell you" because he really doesn't know what to tell you.) Antidepressants and other related drugs require "tweaking," trial and error and patience. If you have what is considered major depression and cannot seem to shake it, short-term or long-term drug treatment may be what is needed. Also no "pill" for mental illness is good without coinciding counseling (and your follow-up with your MD, including the psychiatrist, is not counseling.) That's my real beef with MD's prescribing psychotropics. Most MDs have no mental health training and mental health providers are not trained or certified to prescribe drugs.
Please! Everyone, including Dr. Breggin, needs to remember how many people have been helped by the prudent use of antidepressants. Antidepressants and related drugs need be viewed just like other drugs: they are not for everyone, there is no "magic" pill, and virtually every drug has some side-effects. Let's get back to some balance on this issue and quit polarizing.
Nan, Tampa FL
Good book........2005-10-05
Good review of the negative aspects of SSRIs (and there are many). Would have given it five stars, but he leaves out the very important fact that SSRIs can sometimes cause permanent sexual dysfunction after the drugs are stopped. This has long been overlooked by the medical community and should be included here. Do a goolge search for details.
Book Description
When Jimmy Bannos started experimenting with Louisiana cooking, he transformed his Chicago coffee shop into the best darn Cajun restaurant north of the Mason-Dixon line. Fifteen years later, Jimmy's still serving up bowl after bowl of steaming gumbo, not to mention the most original Creole creations imaginable. While his recipes certainly draw from the striking flavors and fiery spices of New Orleans, you'll find contributions from all over the world. Only at Heaven on Seven will you sample Bayou Chile Relleno, Crawfish and Spinach in Phyllo, or Orzolaya-that is, jambalaya made with orzo pasta. (Hey, what do you expect from a Greek kid with a penchant for Cajun cooking who grew up in an Italian neighborhood in the Windy City?) Jimmy invites you into his kitchen and shares some of his favorite down-home recipes and techniques in a cookbook as colorful and joyous as the food that inspired it. No matter how far away you happen to be from the Crescent City, it can be Mardi Gras all the time!
Customer Reviews:
Not like the food at the restaurant..........2006-08-08
After discovering a mutual love for cajun food, some Chicago natives recommended checking out Heaven On Seven whenever we got to Chicago - and we did. I had the Shrimp Voodoo, and remember loving it! The same friends later gifted us a signed version of this cookbook. We've tried a number of the recipes - even when often faced with daunting lists of hard to find ingredients like nectars. Almost anything we've tried is far too sweet and tastes nothing like the food we experienced at the resturant. Overall - this is a disappointment.
Not Cajun, or Creole, but Chicago.......2004-09-05
This cookbook is not for those familiar with Louisiana cooking. Instead of complex layering of flavors, this Chicago cookbook opts for hot in everything. You won't find delicacy in the recipes, you will find lots of cayenne.
Evidently, Bannos is not that familiar with true Louisiana cuisine, and the food at his restaurants confirms this.
Now, being from New Orleans, I have the disadvantage of expecting what Bannos calls "jambalaya" to taste like what I know as "jambalaya". As such, instead of judging his dish on its own merits, I am comparing it to the traditional dishes.
Check out Paul Prudhomme if you want authentic Cajun and Creole.
Great, and I've read a few........2001-08-08
This is a very good cookbook. I own, or have read, most of the New Orleans cookbooks. This is one of the best, with creative thoughts on how to make some of the dishes lighter and more attractive. Great taste.
New Orleans meets the rest of the World!.......2001-05-03
The Heaven On Seven Cookbook is a must have for any lover of Cajun/Creole cooking. Jimmy Bannos puts together a very interesting list of recipes matching traditional New Orleans fare with elements from other parts of the U. S. and the world. The recipes themselves are not too complex (but are somewhat time intensive), and the ingredient lists are very lengthy at times. Bannos is big on spices, so tamer palettes may need to modify some recipes. All in all a great cookbook though, and a good addition to any kitchen library.

People Who Come Back from Heaven Always Say the Same Thing... try the Gumbo!.......2007-08-07
Chef Bannos has some of the best Cajun/ Creole cooking in the country and most of his greatest hits are featured in this book. Unlike "traditional" Cajun cookbooks, Bannos does not restrict himself to Louisiana. Jamaican, Italian and Greek influences are fused effortlessly with Cajun Creole foundations. A perfect example of this, and my favorite recipe in the book is Bannos' jerktoufee, a wild and wonderful blending of Jamaican jerk and Cajun etoufee.

Book Description
In this gloriously illustrated book, master embroiderer Young Yang Chung shows readers how to "paint with a needle"--embroidering in silk using centuries-old East Asian techniques and traditions. A world-renowned artist and gifted teacher, Young Yang Chung provides detailed step-by-step instructions for 19 original projects--ranging from wall hangings to a cell-phone case--that are suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced. The full-color photographs of centuries-old pieces that demonstrate the various stitchery techniques are of such fine quality that Painting with a Needle stands as an art treasury as well as a "how-to" book.
In her fascinating text, Chung takes readers on a journey through time as she places silk embroidery in an East Asian historical and sociological context. Tips on how to get started, including the types of tools and materials required, a list of suppliers, a section on starting and finishing methods, and a glossary of embroidery terms in three languages (Chinese, Korean, and Japanes) make this the ultimate book on silk embroidery.

Book Description
Rarely in the history of American art does one find a family of artists as extensive as the Morans. The Peale family of Philadelphia comes to mind, but such examples are few and far between. Of all the Moran family members, Thomas Moran is the most renowned, famous for his expansive panoramas of the American West from the 1870s to the turn of the century. However, with his wife, Mary Nimmo Moran, also an artist, the two shared a pronounced interest in painting the terrain of New Jersey and East Hampton, Long Island and became prolific watercolorists and etchers of eastern views. This book highlights previously unknown watercolors by both Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran in addition to a selection of their etched works. While contemporary scholarship regards Thomas Moran as the foremost painter in the family, many of the Morans were accomplished artists and held positions of great importance in the late nineteenth century. This publication addresses the artistry of multiple members of the extended Moran family including painted seascapes, portraits, and genre scenes by Edward, his son Leon, and Peter Moran, brother to Edward and Thomas.
Customer Reviews:
This book resonated with me.......2004-09-27
I have just finished reading Eleanor Mallet's new book "Tevye's Grandchildren". In it, Mallet explores her Jewish identity.
The impetus to do this first came about when she realized that her sons, third generation American Jews, were more comfortable with their Jewish identity than she was herself. Mallet became aware that she grew up feeling it was OK to feel Jewish but not "too Jewish". She embarked on a journey of discovery of her own place in the Jewish world, first by exploring her parent's feelings about their Jewish identity. Her narrative has an introspective flavor that makes you feel she is speaking to you personally.
She made a trip to Israel, living there for 8 weeks. She wanted to feel what it was like to be a Jew in the Jewish homeland, among a strong Jewish presence. She wanted to immerse herself in every aspect of Israeli life, culture and language. She attended a Hebrew ulpan- an intensive Hebrew class- every day. She visited the shuk- the market place, the Diaspora Museum and Yad Vashem- the holocaust museum. She writes movingly about the development of the State of Israel, and provides many poignant portraits of people she met there.
She later traveled to Germany of all places, to explore what Jewish life is like there. This struck me as a brave thing to do, since I have not had the courage to do this myself. Germany always seemed like an inherently evil place to me, and certainly no place for a Jew. This was eye-opening for me. Germany has encouraged Jewish emigration and has become a popular place for Jewish people from the former Soviet Union to live. Mallet explored how Germans view the Nazi period of their history. I found this especially fascinating.
The historical narrative is informative and very interesting, and of course, helps to provide context for how feelings relating to one's Jewishness have changed over the years. The amount of research reflected in this book is impressive.
Eleanor Mallet gives an honest and intimate portrait of herself, her own feelings and I found this book really resonated with feelings I have had myself. I heartily recommend this book. It is a good and satisfying read.
