Book Description
Palace Cobra picks up where Ed Rasimus critically acclaimed When Thunder Rolled left off. Now hes flying the F-4 Phantom and the attitude is still there. In the waning days of the Vietnam War, Rasimus and his fellow pilots were not going to be the last to die in a conflict their country had abandoned. They were young fighter pilots fresh from training and experienced aviators who came back to the war again and again, not for patriotism, but for the adrenaline rush of combat. From the bathhouses and barrooms to the prison camps of North Vietnam, this is a gripping combat memoir by a veteran fighter pilot who experienced it all. The wry cynicism of a combat aviator will give readers insights into the Vietnam experience that havent been available before and the heart-stopping action will keep readers turning the pages all night.

PLEASANT READ.......2007-10-21
ED RASIMUS WAS IN A GOOD POSITION TO DOCUMENT THE CHANGES IN ATTITUDE,TACTICS AND OPPOSITION LEVELS ENCOUNTERED IN 1966 AND THOSE IN 1972.IT IS A COLORFULL ,HONEST WITH NO PUNCHES PULLED BOOK.HE TAKES YOU ALONG IN THE COCKPIT WHERE YOU CAN ALMOST TASTE AND FEEL WHAT HE WENT THROUGH.WELL WRITTEN AND THOUROUGHLY ENJOYABLE BOOK !
Palace Cobra great book.......2007-10-08
Excellent fighter pilot's first person account of his second combat tour in South East Asia, flying bombing missions (mostly Wild Weasel, attacking Surface-to-Air Missile sites) in North Vietnam. Read Ed Rasimus' first book, "When Thunder Rolled," first.
Palace Cobra, Roll On!.......2007-04-17
Another excellent by Book Ed Rasimus, the author of "When Thunder Rolled". I had anticipated this book for months based on the strength of "When Thuder Rolled" and this book did not disappoint. I usually enjoy a good book over the course of several days like fine bottle of wine, but I guzzled this one down in one sitting like cheap hooch, getting uncontrollably drunk on the thrills contained inside. Mr. Rasimus delivers edge-of-the-seat action and a rollicking fast paced read. I also found it quite interesting how his experiences tempered his outlook and cynicism began to creep into his attitude about the war and the missions. To read his two books makes me appreciate what these men went through and to be thankful of their endeavours. Hopefully others are affected in the same way. It is my sincere hope that there will be more books in the future from Mr Rasimus.
Great Vietnam Air War Story.......2007-03-09
This book is an excellent story told by Ed Rasimus about his second tour in air combat in Vietnam. If you have not read his first book, When Thunder Rolled, you better get it! Not because you need to read it before this book (although it gives you some history leading up to this book), but because it is also a great read.
Mr. Rasimus tells the story of his tour as an F-4 pilot during the last part of the war in Vietnam. He tells it from a personal point of view and really gets the reader involved in what he was going through at the time. If you are looking for a in depth book about the F-4 Phantom, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a in depth book about a pilot's experiences during Vietnam, this is a must have!
Overall, I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed!
Palace Cobra.......2007-01-10
This is another one of those page-turner books that was hard to put down.
Book Description
In 100 Missions North, Ken Bell recounts the harrowing sorties that he and his comrades flew in F-105 Thunderchiefs, the famous "Thud", in 1966-67, when pilots faced a 50 percent loss rate. What was it like to face these odds day after day? We learn that men sustained by faith in each other and joined by the unique bonds of combat can overcome anxiety, fear, and even terror to achieve common goals.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books about the airwar over North Viet Nam.......2007-01-04
I was mechanic on the F-105 in Thailand when Major Bell was flying his missions there. I believe he has written a superb account of the trials, skills and frustrations the Thud pilots had during Viet Nam. He brought back many memories of the two years I spent in Thailand.
couldn't put it down.......2006-11-26
My dad, a 105 pilot who was there around the same time Bell was, recommended this book to me and once I started, I literally couldn't put it down. As other reviewers mentioned, you really feel like you are experiencing it firsthand. I think it's important to mention that it is written in a way that your ordinary person can understand exactly what is going on (something I feared before I bought it). It is an outstanding book and while I've always respected what my dad did, I feel I have 100% more insight into the extent of what he, and his fellow pilots, were up against-how they were able to face those odds day after day is almost unbelievable. The (physical and mental) strength and bravery of those men leaves me speechless and in awe. Thank you Ken Bell.
Captivating, Fast Paced Vietnam Air War Memoir.......2006-07-14
I first learned about the F-105 strikes against Hanoi in G.I. Basel's masterpiece; "Pak Six". Prior to reading that book, my concept of the air war over North Vietnam were the B52 strikes that were publicized, in the popular media, in the late sixties. The breavity of "Pak Six" left me hungry for more which Ken Bell delivers in " 100 Missions North" "100 Missions North" fleshes out the details and gives the reader a better idea of what the job, and life, were like for the pilots who flew the dangerous missions into Hanoi. While life, planning and debriefing are covered in more detail, there is still plenty of in-the-cockpit action, rocketing toward earth in full afterburner through clouds of flak to put the bombs on target.
A fantastic book not to be missed.......2006-06-09
Gen Bell writes it and you feel like you are there with him during the events he writes about. It is similar to G.I. Basel's Pak Six ( another must read). I've also read both of Col Broughton's Books and they are also "must reads" as well, but 100 Missions is a personal view of his experiences. I remembered the name Ken Bell from hearing about a mission he flew together with Col Broughton (and about ran of of fuel if I remember right), so knew that I had to buy this book. I am not quite done with the book and could easily read it non-stop, but want to savor it because it is that good. You get some interesting read ins to some of the personell that were at Takhli. I know I had an opinion of Col Scott ( not a positive one) and it will be interesting to read more about Maj Bell's thoughts of him in the book.
Though a Major when the book begins basically, he had no combat experience; wen to Nellis AFB for the fighter weapons school and then to SEA. His writing shows what goes on in his mind, his fears and doubts about the future and also the excitement of seeing combat. He tells about his mistakes and what he learns as he flys into RP6A and becomes a real weapon for the U.S. Air Force.
Fascinating insight into the air war over Vietnam.......2005-03-10
Ken Bell has the knack of keeping his audience riveted while imparting a great deal of information. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I was brought up on WWII history so this was particularly interesting for me.
Fascinating too are the descriptions of interactions with the local people - both on the airbase and places where Gen. Bell went on R&R such as Bangkok.
Don't expect heart-searching or apologies for the war - Gen. Bell simply describes it as it was for a fighter pilot on active duty.
A great read.

Pleasing color sketches and simple diagrams adorn the pages of Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm by famed Sex and the City actor Kim Cattrall and her husband, jazz musician Mark Levinson. The fact that Cattrall's character on the show, Samantha Jones, is a sexual giantess is likely to bump up sales a notch for this attractive, children's-size book, but nevertheless it's a very worthwhile read.
Simple concepts--open communication, trust, love, and a consistent interest in pleasing one another--are the ingredients for an enriching and fulfilling sex life that can bring two people ever closer, according to the text. The facts speak for themselves: when pressed, women will confess in droves that they are sexually frustrated. It's tricky to communicate one's carnal desires to one's lover, yet both parties must be open to this type of ongoing discussion for the formula to work.
Meanwhile, a little education for men can go a long way. The concepts are basic--anyone who isn't a virgin probably knows them. But the rub lies in the consistency, the selflessness, and the patience required of the man. Cattrall and Levinson ask their male readers how they'd feel if they experienced some physical pleasure during lovemaking but never got to climax; they would likely get frustrated after a while. So an abiding devotion to pleasing the woman is a basic assumption throughout, and one that isn't commonly pointed out in such an open way elsewhere. Some readers may think Cattrall and Levinson's approach offers nothing new or exciting, but this honest reminder of what it takes to be a sensitive and satisfying lover is just what the doctor ordered. --Teri Kieffer
Book Description
The sexiest star of the highest-rated comedy on cableSex in the Cityputs jokes aside, and explains the secret to pleasing a woman in bed. Kim and her husband have put together an artfully and elegantly designed, very explicit how-to sex book, based on feedback from the show, and their own experience, meant to help couples achieve one goalthe female orgasm.
Customer Reviews:
If you read ONE book about how to please a woman (and honestly, when's the last time you had sex and the man didn't orgasm?).......2007-04-05
You cannot beat this book. I saw another review saying that the reviewer would buy one for every son of theirs when they were of age... and I must say I think that makes sense. I considered, NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THEIR SEX LIFE, giving this anonymously to my dad just because I feel like my mom deserves it if she's not getting what all this book has to offer. This book is a tasteful and educational book about how women can achieve orgasms with their lovers... but above all it emphasizes the importance of both partners having the desire and know-how to please each other. And desire does not always equal know-how! I can't say enough about the value of this book. Buy it and read it. Or buy it for your man and ask that he read it. Or buy it and read it with him... only good things can come from it! Pun intended.
Couples Sex Suggestions.......2007-02-09
Great for couples....with a surprise....focus on the woman. Who would of thought it could be such fun!
Guide for the tongue and the attitude.......2005-03-16
Two reasons make this book worth the purchase:
1. It gives emphasis to the idea of the orgasm as part art and part technique. I practiced piano technique for years before I ever became proficient enough to "play" the piano and forget the technique (consciously). The book enphasizes the idea that technique isn't the answer; the answer is in the art. That idea, the art of orgasm, if caught makes the book valuable.
2. The pages on cunniligulus display clear, beautiful, and tasteful descriptions and sketches about how to practice the art in a way better than other books devoted completely to the tongue.
I wasn't that interested in the details of Ms Cattrall's life (I don't own a television, never once watched her show, and never found the personal testimony of movie stars convincing) except that she gives convincing testimony that a lover/artist who takes time to learn the instruments (his and his lover's body) can create a new level of pleasure and a new level of understanding. Also, it's probably encouraging for some to know that rich and beautiful doesn't equate with spectacular sex life.
The amount of information at first seemed less than the size of the book promised. But, if you enjoy a beautiful book (the feel of it and the sight of it), and if you carefully study the techniques offered in the section on cunnilingulus, THEN if you forget the book and the mechanics of the techniques in the spirit that a pianist forgets the scales--leting his fingers "play" the instrument, I think you may improve your art and find the book worthwhile.

Wish I had this book when I was no....instead of 50!.......2004-03-01
What a wonderful book for a guy to read. There are things I've wondered about and wanted to learn for 25 years. Satisfaction helped me understand the "How" and "where" to satisfy my wife.
Now the real fun begins!!
It's never too late to learn. I expect the next 10 years to be much more enjoyable for my wife (and me too) than the last 15. Hoping to go from Good to GREAT!!!!
Very Decriptive.......2003-05-16
This book is definitely for people like picture books! The anatomically correct pictures are a big help and everything is diagramed for easy understanding. My husband and I found that this book is oriented very much at teaching the man to please the woman because a man likes and enjoys sex no matter what. I would have liked to see more equality because I feel partners like to give to each other and not always take or always give.

Easy Delicious baking.......2007-08-31
I checked out this book from the library and was inspired to buy it, I had to have my own copy! My favorite recipe is the blueberry muffins with the crumb topping, so easy to whip up. My 14 yr. old daughter loves to use the book often and surprises us with delicious treats. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to bake, specially with such easy, delicious recipes.
YUMMY!.......2007-07-13
I have made about 10 of the recipes out of this book and we have loved all of them. I am looking forward to baking my way through it. The microwave brownies are so simple and our families quick chocolate fix.
Great Book!.......2007-05-21
As the mother of 2 little girls, I am finding a huge need for baked goods for all kinds of functions. So far everything I've made has been awesome - and simple. If you have children, this a great book to add to the collection!
I'm a mom and I like this book!.......2007-04-08
Like the author, I am a mother of 2 small kids and a professional chef. I work, I can cook fancy dishes with the best of them, but for birthday parties, playdates and bake sales. I have to put on a different hat and make simple, delicious things kids love - this is the book I use for that purpose. I've made a number of the recipes - the brownies and their variations are particular favorite. After I discovered the Microwave Brownie recipe, I think I gained 5 pounds, because I can now make brownies in 10 minutes from start to finish and I usually have all the ingredients in the house!

In the 1950s, "returning GIs wanted the picket-fenced home, a new car in the garage, and a patio with a barbecue. Yes, man was master of the flame, singeing his eyebrows while smoking out the neighbors." With that visual, author Linda Everett kicks off The Retro Barbecue, a colorful, kitschy, if slightly bizarre collection of barbecue recipes presented through the prism of 1950s America. During that decade "the popularity of the backyard barbecue quickly spread," says Everett, and her book is decorated with a deluge of grilling-related pictures and ads of the era, including ones for Ronson Fire-Starter Fuel ("Starts Barbecues Instantly! No Work! No Wait!") and the Master Barbecue Grill ("Eating Thrills for Family and Friends"). Baked in with all the nostalgia, though, is a bountiful array of intriguing, tasty American recipes, spanning meats, salads, sauces, drinks, desserts, and more. Highlights include Boston Harbor Baked Beans, Prairie Dogs (sliced hot dogs filled with American cheese), and Rosarita Beach Burgers, which are topped off with dollops of refried beans and avocado ("messy, but oh so yummy!"). Ultimately, this is a fun, goofy cookbook with plenty of retro charm. --Andy Boynton
Book Description
The grilled meats, casseroles, and molded gelatin salads of the 1950s defined the comfort foods Americans love. Returning from the war, men wanted a picket-fenced home, a new car in the garage, and a patio with a barbecue. Yes, man was master of the flame, singeing his eyebrows while smoking out the neighbors.
Featuring a colorful collection of nostalgic advertising, collectibles, and graphics, THE RETRO BARBECUE represents America in the golden age of the postwar party. Grill aficionados will appreciate the wide range of regional recipes and flavors, and greenhorns will be lead through all the steps to coronation as king of the coals. Recipes such as Bart's Backyard Ribs, Rosarita Beach Burgers, Cackle-N-Shout Chicken, and Pink Slipper Pickled Peaches are sure to delight friends and family. To fill out the feast, we've included recipes for chili, salsa, side dishes, and desserts. So toss on your apron, grab your spatula, and fire up the grill: It's retro barbecue time!

Retro Barbecue.......2002-08-29
I thought Retro Barbecue was a phenominal book. I highly recomend it to any outdoor griller. I though I ws savvy on the grill, but having this book handy really made a significant difference in how my food turned out. Thank you Linda Everett for teaching even me a thing or two on the grill
Retro Barbecue - So Much Fun!!.......2002-08-03
Like the title mentioned, this book is so much fun! From the visually stunning colors and wonderful combinations, to the layout per page and the placement of every illustration, everything is just a pleasure to see.
I have been through this book and am always amazed and how much I like it, every time. I am especially fond of the trivia and other tidbits on the pages that has to do with the time period, not necessarily cooking.
The photos and illustrations of cooking utensils and other apparel are very fun! Of course, the recipes where one would use said utensils are also wonderful. I am hoping to try them all.
Overall, I enjoy the images, color and of course the recipes very much. This is a great addition to any cookbook set and is fun just to have out for everyone to see.
Relief from California Cuisine.......2002-07-23
"Retro Barbecue" by Linda Everett is a refreshing return to the era when few knew (and no one cared) about cholesterol, saturated fat and salt and big hunks of meat were the measure of a mother's love for family and friends. Not that we shouldn't eat a healthy diet, but there is something satisfying about revisiting an era where things really tasted good and when portions covered the plate. The book's pictures remind us that the backyard barbecue was the first serious foray of the average man into cooking and also illustrate the diversity of barbecue grills and fireplaces that predated today's expensive, stainless steel fabrications of ..., ... etc.
I found the recipes quite excellent and wide-ranging. One trying to recreate the backyard feast of their childhood should easily be able to do so with the broad range of side dishes and meats described. Watch your sodium intake for a week, check your blood pressure then indulge in a bit of comfort food that most of us would find far more satisfying than the small and expensive entree in our local gourmet restaurant.
Summertime necessity.......2002-07-11
This book is a must have for the summer barbecue season. Not only are the recipes easy to read and follow, but the book itself has enticing illustrations and looks great on a coffee table. What I liked the most about the recipes themselves are the use of seasonings. They do not require you to run to the grocery store and buy a seasoning that you will never find a use for again. My favorite recipe is the "Hickory Hill's Bestever Pork Chops". I never would have thought a combination of dijon mustard and apricot preserves would mix well on pork chops, but it turns out fabulous! The books final fun perks are the trivia tidbits found on almost every page. They cover a wide variety of trivia of the 40's and 50's. Overall I highly recommend this cookbook.

Surely Authors should not be allowed to give inevitable five star reviews to their own books or in this case a book adovcating their own methodology/books.
My daughter is a SUPER baby thanks to this book and BABYPLUS.......2005-03-15
This book and the BABYPLUS sytem have had a PROFOUND affect on my daughter, Cary! My daughter was born alert and enormous (a common side affect) at 9 pounds 12 ounces. Despite a tight fit through my 5 foot 3 inch frame and the fact that she got STUCK, her head was big beautiful and perfectly round. No conehead affect. She nursed like a pro..and didn't stop for nearly three years! She has reached EVERY milestone early. She sat unassisted at 4 months, and walked back and forth across the yard like a pro by 10 months. At 1 1/2 she could peddle a 12 inch training wheel bike very quickly up and down the sidewalk. My older daughter wasn't even ready for that bike until her 3rd birthday! At age two she could pump her legs on the swing..high..and no longer needed to be pushed. By age three Cary could read many words and knew all her letters and letter sounds. She could do a perfect cartwheel.
Now at age 4 Cary can read any beginner book very well...5 months before kindergarten. She can do back walkovers and back handsprings without any assistance and has been moved from her preschool gymnastics class into a "by recomendation only" competetive team! The coach had to seak out special permission from the owner because this isn't normally done for 4-year-olds. Officially, kids are supposed to be 6 or older to enter the team. She has also been given special permission to attend "open gym" and "back handspring clinics" which are also reserved for kids age 6 and over. She is an amazing violinist. After only 6 months of lessons, she is farther along than many of the kids who are in their third year! Is she over-loaded? NO WAY! She doesn't want to leave and then begs to go back! She wants to wear her leotard to bed everynight. We've compromised on an under-the-jammies solution.
I got online today to buy myself a new copy of this book since I had given mine away a few months ago to my pregnant sister-in-law (along with a Brand New Babyplus.) If you're worried about the cost of the program, don't be. Just consider the resale value. That's what I did. I got most of my money back...and my daughter still has 100% of the benefits. I'm beginning to "try" again and will soon be buying another Babyplus.
After experiencing the profound affect that the system had on my daugher, I can not imagine carrying a pregnancy without it. It's more than a little advantage. In my opinion, not using it is creating a disadvantage. My daughter has so much SELF_CONFIDENCE! That alone is worth all the money in the world.
*********************** The only other major baby-boosting system that I would highly recomend is breast-feeding. Studies show that breastfed babies have higher I.Q.'s. How much higher depends on how long the child is nursed...the longer the better. The World Health Organization recomends a minimum of 2 years! Read all about the importance of breastmilk on brain development in this book! **********************************
A must for expectant parents........2001-05-28
As the researcher who developed the BabyPlus prenatal enrichment system, I was flattered to discover my innovation had been accurately portrayed in one chapter of Sarah Brewer's Super Baby. Neither I nor the technology's manufacturer had prior contact with this physician-author, and that she personally utilized the product before writing about it was highly impressive since both scientific and maternal perspectives are represented. Because the work is intended as a practical guide for parents-to-be, its technical material remains necessarily abbreviated, but several studies in peer-reviewed academic journals over the last decade stand behind the results of my discovery (some are posted in their entirety on easily-located websites), with one independent comparative assessment employing classical music, maternal singing, BabyPlus, and a control group mentioned--from a physician team headed by Mikhail Lazarev, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of the Children's Health Laboratory, Center for Rehabilitative Medicine, Russian Ministry of Health--its newborn and infant outcomes detailed in the popular hour-long British television documentary, "Brave New Babies," narrated by actress Miranda Richardson and aired frequently on The Learning Channel as well as throughout a dozen countries. My own book on the historical, theoretical, and applied aspects of this fascinating subject is due for publication shortly.
Is this a real book...........2001-01-19
or the print version of an infomercial? The author repeatedly pushes something called Baby Plus - an expensive pre-natal stimulation device. She claims some study done in Russia showed it to be remarkably beneficial. But the study is not accurately described and the institution that did the study is not specified. I've read several books about pre-natal and early development and they ALL say that no study has ever convincingly shown pre-natal sound stimulation to be beneficial.
I think the manufacturer of the Baby Plus product must have paid the author to write this book - but isn't that supposed to be disclosed somewhere?
Very informative, if incomplete, guide to infant development.......2000-04-30
This book's tack over other pregnancy and early childhood books is its focus on research related to developing the baby's mental capacity. I have always felt that the vast majority of children, probably including myself, are born and raised in an environment that does not help them deal with the world; instead parents let the public school system teach them the basics of education. The last thing I want for my kids is for them to have to learn things critical to their successful development as a citizen while at the same time dealing with the shock of being in a strange environment with lots of kids they don't know. At times the information gets dry, as there are many references to research, but the author makes an effort to present it in a format that makes sense to the layperson.

Book Description
In A Joyful Noise, Deborah Weisgall tells a moving story of her turbulent coming-of-age in the shadow of two remarkable men who lived life as if they were characters in an opera. The daughter of a mercurial composer and the granddaughter of a legendary cantor, Deborah as a child longed to be entrusted with their precious music and carry it on herself. But it was impossible; she was a girl. A Joyful Noise recounts Deborah's search for a place within the family tradition and, finally, her triumphant discovery of a way to make the men who would exclude her -- who were also the men she loved -- listen to her voice. A Joyful Noise is a tender, heartbreaking, beautifully written chronicle of the power of memory, the survival of faith, and the pursuit of a grand musical heritage. "A superbly written chronicle encompassing the grand themes of the power of memory and the survival of faith." -- The Jewish Transcript; "Weisgall has written a valuable book." -- The New York Times Book Review; "This is a lovely memoir of life in the acutely functional family of a fine and learned composer. Deborah Weisgall writes of a milieu of discourse immersed in and emerging from music, and in which love and knowledge are not at odds. . . . A Joyful Noise is that of her own particular music of remembering." -- John Hollander; "An absorbing memoir, with music in the background and foreground." -- New York Jewish Week.

Gives me a mirror to look into myself.......2002-12-30
The author gave a birth of her daughter in ' 89, so did I deliver my third kids . This may be only one common thing to share between her , except both are Shubertian.
Jewish and Japanese are often compared, and they are conspicuously differnt in the spiritual distance of each individual from the history of their own people. We , Japanese ,are genious of forgetting and we could change the attitude toward US so dramatically that Ruth Benedict couldn't help studying Japanese war captives. Whereas Jewish people, language wise, music wise , are trying to carry on the tradition, even though great constraint between the host country culture and also between generations of their own people.
And 'an die Music'. Tan Dun, a Chinese composer living in NY,once said,' Western music develops horizontally'. I also admit, music are differnt in East and West, maybe because of Eastern ear VS Western ear. But when lyrics intermediate sounds and internal reality that words evoke , what type of ears you may have, you can enjoy music of differnt culture. So many operas, lied, Italian songs and hymns apperared in this books have told me so.

somber, contemlative memoir celebrates music, laments family.......2001-08-25
"A Joyful Noise," Deborah Weisgall's serious and brooding memoir, is far from a fluffy celebration of music and Judaic heritage. Its subtitle, "Claiming the Songs of My Fathers," more accurately captures the sense of conflict and struggle which permeates the life of a talented, tormented and frustrated young woman, who at once soars with the rich musical background of both her father and grandfather but simultaneously is denied participation and validation because of her gender. "A Joyful Noise" elicits both compassion and anger from the reader; one senses that had the author been born some twenty years later she would have had much more direct access to both her own talents and her clearly-articulated love for her heritage. The author does not disguise the central theme of her memoir. After a disappointing experience at a Passover seder, Deborah expresses her yearning to join her father and grandfather as full participants in both music and heritage. "I hummed the songs as quietly as I could, aching to get them right, afraid that my father would hear my wrong notes and correct me. They ran perfectly through my head but not from my mouth. I loved them. I wanted them." Yet, she understands that her ambition does not correspond with the very heritage she so deeply desires. Segregated, minimized and isolated due to sexist traditions and practices, Jewish women have had to sublimate their otherwise honorable ambitions into other avenues of expression. Sensing that possibility, even as a child, Deborah laments: "My desire was as strong as theirs; my voice was not. My breath stalled against my vocal cords, and the back of my throat throbbed from stopped-up songs and angry tears. I wanted to sing. I wanted to be heard." Weisgall's quest for authenticity, for voice, occurs during a period of national affluence and cultural indifference in the 1950s and on the cusp of our nation's profound social revolution of the 1960s. Deborah comes of age in a tension-riddled family; her non-religious mother, Nathalie, is indifferent to housework, and her beloved father, Hugo, consistently produces operas which are artistically gifted but critical failures. The Weisgalls constantly move from their Baltimore roots, whether it be to Maine for summers, or from college town to another, where Hugo can sustain his family's material needs while he tries to fulfill his own battered expectations as an artist. Deborah realizes the discored in her family is real; her mother's physical beauty cannot hide her bitterness just as her father's rapture with musci cannot hide his own frustration with failure and betrayal. Looming like a dense cloud over the family is the Holocaust, whose disruptive horror has created a permanent sense of dread and loss. In a desultory search through her parents' closet, Deborah discovers a shoe-box stuffed with raw and brutal photographs of cocentration camp victims. She understands in a visceral sense the impact of genocide on her father, who directly witnessed the horrific scenes while he served as a translator for the liberating United States Army during World War II. The Weisgalls are derivative survivors, having lost their past, their roots, their culture through the Holocaust. The author is able to trace the genesis of family friction to this loss of place. Nathalie, a lover of beauty, flounders in America; Hugo, linked in memory to his childhood in Czechoslovakia, wrestles with his own struggle to match his father (Abba) without the support of cultural stability and identity. The memoir is not without its faults. Unless one has a solid grasp of opera and classical music, Weisgall's detailed descriptions of her artistic passion tend to overwhelm the reader. Deborah's ultimately successful climb to identity occurs too abruptly, as well. Her ultimate chapters, which recount her experiences as Radcliffe and her emergence as an independent, secure woman, appear rushed and lack the elegant detail so prevalent throughout descriptions of her childhood. Nevertheless, this serious and introspective work deserves the critical praise it has garnered. "A Joyful Noise" deftly interweaves music, religious heritage and family into a tapestry both instructive and inspiring.

Awesome book!.......2001-07-05
I LOVE this book! Before I read this book, a family friend of mine read it and highly highly recommended it. When I started this book, I couldn't put it down, thats the kind of book it can be for certain people. The reason why this book was a huge page-turner for me, was because I felt relate to the author in many different levels. (...)This book isn't just text on a few pages to me, it is guidence for my life.
