Book Description
This is a memoir of the author's flying career, starting with his flight training at March Field, California, in the mid-1920s, his days flying PT-3s and DH-4s; and his training in attack aviation with the Army Air Corps at Kelly Field, Texas, through to his hours in a Curtiss Falcon A-3s and his second-place finish in the Patrick Trophy race in 1930. Written in witty, casual prose, this book is great fun for all military aviation enthusiasts.

A Helpful Planning Book.......2007-05-09
This book is helpful in planning a diet because it contains easily read, useful pages on things like the exact numbers of various types of nuts which constitute a 1 oz serving for snacks, etc. There are a few good-looking recipes which I haven't tried; however, recipes are not the focus of the book. The planning elements are the main focus and very useful.
Another Excellent Book from the Change One Series.......2007-02-03
I initially bought "Change One for Diabetes" and thought it was such an excellent book that I decided to have a look at this version for my daughter who is non-diabetic. These books are such a novel approach and one that leads to lasting change. The premise is in the title - Change One thing at a time and don't move onto any other changes until you have managed to make that change a new habit. These books are full of straightforward, easy to accomplish ideas that just strike you as eminently "doable." Don't be put off by the fact that they are issued by the Reader's Digest Group - I had those same "Reader's Digest???" thoughts at first, too. This is one of the best non-diet diet books I've seen. And it works, too!

Rachael Ray's new Open House Cookbook provides a fabulous collection of tempting, easy recipes to entertain a crowd.

A good party book.......2007-03-16
This is a good book for casual get togethers, especially pizza parties. I cannot say I have made anything from this book yet, but I do plan on using the pizza dough recipe in the near future. Rachael Ray has wonderful recipes in all of her books. I am looking forward to using some of the recipes out of this book in the near future, maybe for the up coming holiday.
Early Rachael Ray: 1999 Original Is Reprinted in 2005.......2007-02-24
I'm on a tasty journey licking my finger on hundreds of Rachael Ray's recipes in her many cookbooks. In the course of reading, using, and reviewing these cookbooks, I've been struck that the early Rachael Ray is different from the more recent work. Both have a lot to be said for them. The newest works are more sophisticated, appeal to a wider palate, use more ingredients, and are often daring in the way they simplify what most of us think of as very time-consuming dishes. Early Rachael Ray by comparison is full of family stories, traditional Italian cooking, and happy memories of days gone by when great meals united families and friends.
Rachael Ray's Open House Cookbook is as desirable an example of early Rachael Ray as you can hope for. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of being invited for an Italian feast will recognize these dishes and the generations of love that create them for each new generation. Thanks to Rachael Ray's work in this book, you can now expect that these wonderful dishes will survive for yet another generation as she brilliantly takes the pain and agony out of such extensive preparations.
The book's first cooking section is called "Company's Company: Parties You Can Prepare and Attend." Around our house, having a party means my wife and I are either always in the kitchen or are carting things back and forth from the kitchen . . . unless we hire someone to help with the party . . . which gives the party a whole different feel that isn't necessarily a better one. The recipes are set to feed 20 or more, and to spread out the preparation and serving work so that it's not so overwhelming. Here's an example: An antipasto party begins two days before when you do the shopping; a day before, you do the heavy lifting of cubing, slicing, and chopping of ingredients . . . and getting the glasses and disposables ready to go; the day of the party, you make a topping and do a little work on two of the appetizers; two hours before the party, you make things that need to be fresh and platter your meats and cheeses; one hour before the guests arrive, you make one more dish and arrange platters and countertops. At the last minute, you make one other dish and cook your bacon-wrapped stuffed dates. Obviously, if you drop a dish or two, you can make the last minute even easier. Nice! Your party dish choices also include: pizza; tapas; and mix and match varieties of dips, spreads, pick-ups and entrees you can serve at room temperature (like beef tenderloin and two sauces). Invite me anytime you want to serve from this great cookbook!
At Home Sundays is the next action and looks at all three meals for Sunday. The breakfast choices are mostly what you would expect except for some tasty alternatives to French toast. Lunches are a zestier version of what you probably usually have. Suppers are where this section shines with recipes for dishes like I-Waited-All-Week Spaghetti Dinner, cioppino, and paella.
Home for the Holidays features comfort foods. These are basically the classics (stuffed artichokes, onion risotto, stuffed mushrooms, onion soup, figs and prosciutto, roast turkey with apple and onion stuffing, baked ham, prime rib, popovers, roast pork loin, brisket, leg of lamb, mashed potatoes (with flavorings), stuffed tomatoes, baked beans, standard vegetables with an extra zesty taste.
Dinner at Eight repeats some of the most popular 30-minute meals from The 30-Minute Meal with an emphasis on classic dishes.
Cooking Rookies is 21 pages of recipes for those who are over 12 with an adult helper. Recipes include pizza dough; four pizzas; egg sandwiches; baked chicken drumsticks; two kinds of tacos; simple take-out food and snacks; three dips; three desserts (including peanut butter kiss cookies); and some mocktails.
Just Desserts to me is the most charming section. Ms. Ray admits that baking isn't her thing; it's too much science and not enough art. So she always sticks to desserts that don't need baking. With that modest preamble, she shares 12 simple dishes that won't blow anyone away . . . but will satisfy those who want to indulge their sweet tooth at the end of a lovely meal.
Although the format isn't exactly in 30-minute style, everything here can be done pretty quickly. If you want a cookbook to make you look like a great party-giver without spending a lot of time, this is a great choice.
Enjoy her wonderful family stories as you savor the food!
Question.......2007-01-16
I've only given one star because of the following: I have a 2000 edition of a book with the same title and wonder if the 2006 edition is any different? When I try to "look inside," I'm taken to the 2000 issue...any help appreciated.
Rachael Ray's open house.......2007-01-10
I love all of her books. And if you need to tweak a recipe that is already so simple hers are easy to do it to. She speaks in plain english and measurments are easy.

This is a delightful book. I was able to use it over the holidays for many tempting treats for my guests and I look forward to using it over and over.

Great reference book.......2007-08-06
I have been turning for two years now and own several books and DVDs on turning. This is the best book I've seen that covers several different types of turnings. It is not the usual reference with several chapters devoted to sharpening, tools, types of cuts etc. It's more an intermediate book that assumes you know this type of background information and would like to explore different shapes.

Book Description
Plant reproductive biology has undergone a revolution during the past five years, with the cloning, sequencing and localization of the genes important in reproduction. These advantages in plant molecular biology have led to exciting applications in plant biotechnology, including the genetic engineering of male sterility and other reproductive processes. This book presents an interesting and contemporary account of these new developments from the scientists in whose laboratories they have been made. The chapters focus on two areas: the molecular biology of self-incompatibility, which is the system of self-recognition controlled by the S-gene and related genes; and the cellular and molecular biology of pollen development and genetic dissection of male sterility. Some chapters feature
Arabidopsis, with its unique genetic system. Reproduction is vital for seed production in crop plants, and this book presents new approaches to manipulate plant breeding systems for the 21st century.

Excellent Overview.......2007-06-12
Great for patients/families with a new diagnosis of epilepsy or someone that has had epilepsy for many years.
Excellent handbook to have available.
Epilepsy: Patient and Family Guide.......2006-03-24
This book offers a great overview of epilepsy. I found it up to date and informative. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is newly diagnosed or who has a family member diagnosed with epilepsy.
Devinsky: Epilepsy, Patient & Family Guide.......2003-01-20
This book is what it claims to be, a good intelligible guide to epilepsy for non-medics. BUT there is far too little (less than one page) on Sudden Unexplained Death, Epilepsy (SUDEP), which can devastate families and friends. While the mortality rate associated with epilepsy may be small, the effect of sudden death is enormous. Like almost everything else I have read on the subject, this book inadequately recognizes the risks of death. The words "death" and "mortality" are not even in Devinsky's index (though SUDEP is). So -- a good book, with a crucial omission.
great advice.......2000-07-08
Excellent book in easy to understand language. Found the chapter on surgical options very informative.
Best lay-person's reference on epilepsy I've seen!.......1998-04-23
After years of only medical texts and pamphlets from the EFA, it finally happened...a great neurologist took the time to write a book for those of us with epilepsy, our friends, and our families. He helps dispel many of the myths that exist about seizure disorders. Never patronizing and extremely informative, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Devinsky's book for anyone in need of information about seizure disorders.

Book Description
After liberation from Auschwitz, fourteen-year-old Elli, her brother, and their mother attempt to rebuild their lives in Czechoslovakia. But it doesn't take long for Elli to realize that even though the war is over, anti-Semitism is not, so she and her family decide to escape to America along with thousands of other Jews. Little do they know what agonies and adventures await them still.
Elli's memoir of her experiences after Auschwitz will captivate readers as they follow her through heartache, frustration, adventure, excitement, love, and ultimately, triumph.
Customer Reviews:
Met my expectations.......2007-01-18
Came close to what I expected. Not as powerful as her previous book (I HAVE LIVED A THOUSAND YEARS) but gives a good overview (specially the first 2/3) of what it was like coming back to a soon-to-be Communist (Stalinist) country behind the Iron Courtain, and what it took to flee it and keep on living in limbo for years - and all that in the teenage years.
Great sequel.......2005-01-06
This is one of the best sequels to a Shoah memoir I've read yet. Too many such sequels fall into the trap of simply recounting what happened next and aren't as compelling as the first book because there's no constant suspense and wondering what's going to happen next, which of these people being spoken about survived and who perished. In this sequel, though, there are a lot of interesting details about what happened next, such as Elli's involvement in the Bricha, the refugee house she liked to visit and hang out at, her work at a childrens' summer camp in the mountains, her training to become a teacher, and the long hard road she and her mother went through on their way from escaping from their home town to America before it was too late and the Iron Curtain closed permanently. It was also nice that each chapter was prefaced with the date or dates during which it transpired, so you had a real timeframe of things. The only minor complaint I have is about the languages used; in this book, the Friedmanns' town has returned to Czechoslovakian control and is in what is now the free nation of Slovakia, so they speak Slovakian, though in the first book, when they were in Hungarian hands, they seemed to be native speakers of Hungarian, and in the section of this book where Elli and her mother are being cross-examined when they're sneaking over the border with a transport of real Hungarians, Elli says they can make it, since they speak Hungarian as well as natives. I can't find any mention in the first book about the Friedmanns being Slovakians or speaking that language like their native tongue, but overall, apart from that minor unexplained detail, it's a really good sequel.
even better than the first!.......2004-07-14
I recommended the first book to two of the people I know, but what was dissapointing was that they never wanted to read the second book. I think that this was even better than the first, which was really good too! This was a really good addition to the first, very suspenseful and interesting. You only want the best for her.
A Perfect Addition To Your Holocaust Collection.......2004-01-13
My Bridges of Hope is a fascinating and well-written book that keeps you hooked from the first word to that last. Livia Bitton-Jackson gives you insight into what happened to those who were among the few to survive the Holocaust. The girl in the story is actually a younger Bitton-Jackson when she was growing up. This autobiography is more like a story than a recollection of one's past. The book is set in Czechoslovakia where before the war, Elli (Bitton-Jackson), her brother Bubi, and their parents lived. After the war, their beloved home feels abandoned and changed. Other settings of the book include Elli's apartment and various temporary homes that they live in on their way to finding hope in America.
They have survived the horrid concentration camps but return to find that their father and aunt both perished in the war. The book describes events that happened through June of 1945 to March 30 of 1951 to a young Jewish woman. Elli is 14 when the book starts out. While fighting her past, she helps out in a camp for orphans, helps refuges escape to Palestine, and continues her education. After her schooling, Elli becomes a teacher. Elli is strong-willed, confused, and hopefully. She is loving and smart. Elli's mother is a seamstress and wants to go to America because they can't stay in their homeland any longer. Her mother loves her children very much and is unfamiliar with the "newer" age. Bubi is Elli's older brother. He is a warm, caring, and affectionate. Elli looks up to him and often finds herself needing his comfort.
Although both her mother and brother want to go to America, Elli wants to join her friends in going to their "homeland" The dialog in the book was appropriate because she was the character. The words were probably even words she used herself. She keeps you interested because she adds in different languages and so it matches the period. Her style is wonderful and it flows and blends perfectly. She always made it so you understood what was happening. I think this book was written so she could move on and maybe start healing. I think she also wanted others to know what the Jews went through.
I think this is a wonderful book for young adults. It shows how a young girl changes into a confident woman while she is fighting her past and trying to live her future. It is a great book to add to anyone's Holocaust collection.
My Brodges of Hope.......2003-04-30
My Bridges of Hope is an excellent book about a girl named Elli returning from the dreadful Holocaust. Elli returns home expecting everything would be all right, but to her surprise everything has changed and she must too. The Friedmann family goes through many challenges when returning home and must also cope with the loss of family members. The family has to make many tough decisions and just as one problem is solved another comes along. They know they cannot stay in Czechoslovakia but where else would they go? They spend many years waiting and finally their chance comes to be sent to America to start a new life.
This is an excellent book and I recommend reading it. Even though the Holocaust was over Jews still had many challenges to overtake. Although we think the end of the war was the end of Jewish troubles it was not. This book gives one account of a person's life after the Holocaust.
