A wonderfully funny, quirky and intelligent book by a man you always hoped you might someday sit next to at a dinner party. Walton manages to wrap his keen intellect and offbeat wit around such diverse subjects as science, venture capital, mountaineering, aviation, off-beat adventure, family life, and rock and roll and offer it up to the reader as one delectable dish. His curiosity and joy in the wonders of this world and the challenges it presents shine on every page.

This book did not offer anything new from the usual "everything in moderation", except for no smoking, no drinking and take your prenatal vitamins. Chances are, if you were healthy before pregnancy, you will continue to be healthy in pregnancy, if you were not healthy before, now it is a good time to become healthy, but if you were struggling with losing weight, this book will seem like any other diet book in the market.

How does a car run? It needs all the essentials: gas, oil, break pads, etc. Without one of these, the car doesn't function like it could. Same with our bodies. This book really spells this out.

A little uptight (forgive yourself-you are human) at times, but this book has a list of all the minerals and vitamins we need in a day to be healthy for ourselves and our baby, how much we need in each trimester (and after), and what foods to eat in order to get them. Believe it or not, it is easier than you think.

I started being a health nut and exercise freak at age 14. A decade later, I started reading this book before my daughter was conceived to find out how to supply for two. It has some great recipes, advice, and tells you what mineral and vitamin does for you and your baby at each stage.

Just what I had expected.......2006-06-21

I thought this book was very useful. I bought it as soon as I found out I was pregnant with our first child because I wanted to ensure that my developing baby was getting proper nutrition. This book achieved that purpose. As a scientist, I had read several studies that found evidence of the nutritional status of the mother in the health of her future grandchildren. Moreover, that my diet could affect what diseases, if any my child developed later in life. I wanted to make sure the legacy I created would be a good one. This book was broken down into the nutrition needed for each stage. There were sections for pre-pregnancy, a section for each of the three trimesters and post pregnancy (which included sections for nutrients needed while breastfeeding and returning to pre-pregnancy weight.) It also included mock menu's and recipe ideas. Overall I thought it was a good book to have particularly if you own no other books on the subject. Particularly useful were the charts listing types of foods containing the nutrients you need. There were also descriptions about the vitamins and minerals needed and why the baby needs them. This book is definitely a keeper.

Two books - two sisters pregnant.......2006-02-08

I am a nutrition major, and I want to specialize in nutrition for pregnant women. I bought this book because of the wealth of information. I showed it to my teachers, all Registered Dietitians, and they were surprised by how accurate it was. Three months ago my sister found out she was pregnant. I gave her my copy of this book and her husband sat down for an hour highlighting pretty much everything this book. He liked the recommendations for what food products to avoid and what items she was going to need more of. She is now four months pregnant and is still using this book. I ordered another copy so I could keep one for my knowledge. Last week, my other sister found out she was seven weeks pregnant. I immediately gave her the copy that I had just ordered for myself. This is her first pregnancy and she had no idea what to do. This book is also turning out to be very useful to her. I am now ordering my third copy, however, my third and final sister is getting married in a month, and I see another pregnancy in the future.

Easy to follow.......2005-07-22

This book provides great information on nutrition from the planning stages, to the end of pregnancy, to after delivery. It is very informative and explains, in detail, the reasons why you need certain vitamins and minerals. It includes summary charts that are great to refer to when you need a refresher!

Great Cookbook.......2000-01-03

This book is one of the best cookbooks I have ever seen. The recipes are simple and easy to make, not to mention delicious. They are very well compiled and organized and easy to read.

Not only do you get some of the best old fashioned recipes around, but there are some very interesting historical tidbits thrown in as well. This makes Kentucky Recipes a very interesting book to read, as well as to use for those delicious meals. I gave this book to my mother for Christmas, and it was like a walk down memory lane for her. She stopped frequently exclaiming that she has always used this recipe, or heard of that one, or had a relative who used to make certain things listed in the book, but had never seen it in print. She was thrilled. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves Southern Cooking, or wants to learn!

excellant addition to my reference library.......2007-02-16

Dave Day,s "flying model helicopters" is exactly what I was hoping it would be. I could not be more pleased with the content of this excellant referance book. Anyone interested in flying model helicopters would be well advised to purchase this book. I flew cobra gunships in vietnam, and assumed that I could easily fly model helicopters {WRONG}. This book put me on the right track, and now I am enjoying the best hobby I ever had!

This is a VERY basic book; but this is good, since I have never had a green thumb and prefer to read about gardening before going out and killing innocent plants;Concepts were explained plainly and diagrams and pictures were strategically placed.

It's About Time!.......2005-05-15

Organize Your Family's Schedule In No Time (In No Time) by Valentina Sgro is an unusual 'organize your life' guide, as it helps you organize your life by showing the many options you have to make day-to-day living more productive and a little less stressful. Sgro says "You're welcome to read this book from cover to cover...but what we really want you to do is to use this book to improve your family's life." She suggests that you read the sections that apply to your family circumstances before making any decisions on your next move. I found "Dealing with the Necessities of Life", particularly helpful. It shows how becoming more efficient can result in adding hours of quality time to your family's life. Moms (and dads) with preschool children with will welcome "Managing the Preschool Years", some of the author's idea are so unique, your youngsters will look forward to doing their chores. The sidebar notes, cautions and tips in this book contain useful information and are to the point. Ms. Sgro shows you how to make a schedule/calendar that will work for every member of the house. You will find diagrams, various calendars, suggested products along with the cost and website.

What I really like about author is that she suggests that you consider your family members' body clocks and personalities when creating schedules.

A BIG HELP in the "How-To" Dept!.......2005-01-06

I found this book to be extremely thorough on the subject of organizing a family's schedule, as well as easy enough to read in a short time. I liked the numerous tables and figures illustrating exactly how to do specific tasks.

Suggested websites and prices of various things were extremely helpful! I really liked this book a great deal and would highly recommend it!

As a mom with 3 children between the ages 2 and 4, I thought I was organized. When I read Ms. Sgro's book, I entered a whole new level of organization! Life has gotten simpler and more less stressful by implementing her ideas. My wish list for the holidays includes a PDA - something I never thought I could keep updated. The book identified easy and straightforward techniques that explained the benefits and features. Thanks for helping make my life a whole lot more organized!

Help has finally arrived! Any family, no matter its size, stage of life or composition, can find assistance in getting life more organized and under control! Ms. Sgro's book is readable, helpful and loaded with useful features like checklists, surveys and product suggestions. I particularly like the format that permits the reader to jump around to the section that is needed, such as the holiday chapter or the celebration section. This book presents a "doable" approach, even for people who claim to have little or no organizational skills. It is also helpful to have products illustrated, priced and able to be located without wasting valuable time! This is a great find!

This is an extremely well presented and yes, "organized" book that will help anyone to get a grip on controlling the hustle and bustle of a busy life. A remarkable tale of Hasidic (Ultra-Orthodox) Jews and the miracles that happened to so many in spite of the ravages of the Holocaust.

A mix of prose and poetry, tears and turbulence, you'll want to read it from cover to cover.

One of the great pieces of literature related to one of the worst times in modern history.

I read the book every year on Tisha B'av, the Jewish day of national mourning and never cease to be amazed, inspired and touched by the myriad of stories in this wonderful book. a book like no other.......2005-04-15

i must say that I am surprised that no reviews I have come across so far adress what appears to me this books most remarkable feature: Its power of inspiring faith. In fact, I would site this book as one of the most concrete proofs of the existence of God in print. Stories of the divine powers that are granted to the compassionate, the devout, and the faithful surpass all description. Please read this book, I treasure it like a scripture, and the courage, profound faith, and integrity of its characters burns in the heart like fire. i have never wept like I wept when I read these simple stories for the first time, and I continue to draw bittersweet emotional sustainance everytime I read and re-read its pages. There is too many brilliant anecdotes to choose examples, But as I write I remeber the story of the boy whose friend apparently died in a forced labour factory. The young man was piled in the frigid cold of night in a pile of corpses after a terrible illness had left no sign of life in him. The grandfather of the boy kept appearing in his friends dream to tell him the his friend must be "woken up". After the third dream, the youth was more frightened of the dream than of risking his life to escape to where the dead were piled to investigate. The youth found his friend amid the corpses, and when he repeated the granfather's invocation to "wake up", he indeed stirred! The story concludes with the boy warming his friend, bringing him to safety, and survival. It is marvelous and breathtaking to discover that these miraculous and spellbinding stories occurred in the darkest heart of humankind's darkest hours, and that they have been compiled in this manner is a fitting tribute to is subjects.

The other kind of heroism .......2005-02-01

Yaffa Eliach is to be commended for collecting and publishing these tales. They tell stories of Jews who despite horrible trials and sufferings kept their faith in God, and their decency as human beings. The paradox is often that only when human beings are subject to the worse trials do they reveal their greatness. These stories are stories of inspiration not only for Jews but for all of mankind.

Religious Jews whose faith the Nazis could not break.......2003-11-03

As far as I know, this book was the first collection of Hasidic responses to the Holocaust to make it out of the "Jewish literary ghetto" and into the mainstream, where it remains a popular read in both Jewish and non-Jewish theological circles. It was also the first collection of stories about Jews who did NOT lose their faith during the Holocaust (most of them, anyway -- there are one or two exceptions in the book.) Prior to this, religious Jews in the Holocaust were portrayed by the media as as "cowards who didn't fight back" rather than the religious martyrs that they were. (Most typical of this anti-religious period is the infamous line from the movie version of Leon Uris's EXODUS: "The only god I believe in is a gun.") I won't go into the politics of it here, but, suffice it to say, the post-Holocaust Zionist movement was more interested in freedom fighters than saints.

The Hasidim, however, had a different view of their suffering during the Holocaust. God had not deserted them, even if He seemed hidden in a time of darkness. The Hasidim were telling their own Holocaust stories around the Sabbath table or at community gatherings but, because most of this telling was oral and in Yiddish, it was unknown to the general public. Enter Yaffa Eliach. As a professor of English literature at Brooklyn College, she began hearing these tales from her students. Brooklyn College had/has a high percentage of Hasidic students and, through them, Eliach got to know their parents and other Holocaust survivors, including some of the Hasidic Rebbes. The result is a fine collection of true Holocaust stories that will forever change the way you view Hasidic Jews. Courage, as this book demonstrates, doesn't always mean grabbing a gun. It can also mean hiding a child, sharing your food when you yourself are starving, or meeting death with your human dignity intact. To maintain one's faith under such adversity, to continue studying Torah and doing the mitzvahs even in a concentration camp -- these were acts of true resistance that shine through every page of this book. I give it ten stars!
