Reminiscences of a Kremlin Commandant was written by Pavel Dmitriyevich Malkov, a member of the Communist Party since 1904, who played an active part in the February Revolution and the Great October Socialist Revolution in 1917. He had the collaboration of Professor of History, A. Y. Sverdlov. A few days after the October victory, Pavel Malkov was appointed Commandant of Smolny in Petrograd, and when the Soviet Government was transferred to Moscow in March 1918, he became Commandant of the Moscow Kremlin. He held this post of honor until the summer of 1920, when he undertook important work of an economic and social nature. Pavel Malkov took part in, or was an eyewitness to, many historic events during the October days and the early years of Soviet power. His work as Commandant of the Moscow Kremlin afforded him opportunities of frequent meetings with Lenin and other prominent leaders of the Soviet state. A number of features and details, which at times seemed of no particular importance, helped the author to build up a vivid picture of Lenin both as leader and man. Malkov's duties brought him chiefly into contact with Yakov Sverdlov, Felix Dzerzhinsky, and Varlam Avanesov, for all of whom he carried out assignments. His book has much to say about these ardent Bolsheviks and their tireless work during the formative years of Soviet power. Pavel Malkov's personal reminiscences form the basis of the book; he has made use of archive materials and documents, some of them being from his personal collection, as well as newspapers and periodicals published in 1917-19. P. D. Malkov is now a pensioner and lives in Moscow.

A biography of Nobel laureate Ilya Mechnikov (1845 - 1916), a Russian biologist and a founder of the science of immunity. Mechnikov is one of those famous Russian scientists who, like Mendeleyev, Butlerov, Sechenov, Pavlov, the Kovalevsky brothers, and Timiryazev, are the pride of Russian science. He was a Darwinian scientist who had theories of cellular immunity, applications of phagocytic theory and the biological doctrine of inflammation.

About the author

Mechnikov was born in Kharkiv Oblast (now Ukraine) on May 15, 1845. He was educated at the University of Kharkiv and, in Germany, at the Universities of Giessen, Gottingen, and Munich. Mechnikov lectured in zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Odessa from 1870 to 1882. In he 1904 became a subdirector of the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

He began his career with studies of the process of intracellular digestion in invertebrates. Later he established the destructive effect of certain white blood cells, which he called phagocytes, on harmful materials in the bloodstream. In 1884 Mechnikov announced a theory of phagocytosis, which formed a basis for the theory of immunity. He also advocated consumption of lactic acid bacteria for the prevention and remedy of intestinal putrefaction.

For his research on immunity he shared the 1908 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with the German bacteriologist Paul Ehrlich.

If what I have read is true.......2007-09-23

I cannot believe that somebody would write these things for pregnant women to read. Why on earth would you want to persuade pregnant women that you can basically do whatever you want with your body while you are pregnant and take no extra percautions? It is risking the life of the baby and your health, just to up sales costs a little because it is what you WANT to read, not what you need to read. I would recommend "What to Expect When You Are Expecting". That book explains what is good for you and what is not good for you and why, which is why some of the readers here seem to enjoy this book. Save yourself and your kid by not buying this book.

I really appreciated this book. There is so much [mis]information out there, and it is very comforting to know I am doing all I can to have a healthy baby.
You don't have to stop living just because you are pregnant.
I wasn't crazy about the format, but it seems many pregnancy books are written this way, and his index was thorough so that I could find any topic I wanted.
I highly recommend this book to first-time moms.

Great book for first-time moms.......2007-08-28

Whenever a friend became pregnant and said how hard it is to give up coffee, tuna, sushi, and pretty much everything under the sun, I would ask why. They never could answer. Well, they should read this book! This book is completely wonderful. Dr. Broder does NOT say you can do whatever you want; just read his section on smoking, which he says is a big NO-NO but then he goes on to explain WHY. Just as he explains WHY in Europe they are not as fanatical about not drinking during pregnancy vs. why the US medical community has their stance on the subject. Everything from sushi to hair dye to nail polish to using cold medicine is explained and discussed. His writing style is excellent, friendly and not too scientific; but more importantly, he backs up what he says with facts (for example, he supports breastfeeding but explains WHY, and he doesn't seem to condemn you if you don't choose to breastfeed). I am so glad I found this book.

panic free...and feeling better.......2007-04-11

This book has helped me so much in my pregnancy woes. I was so terrified to do something wrong that I found myself wanting to sneak...then feeling horrible. This book helps sort fact from fiction and sometimes gives you the honest consequence rather than hype. In other words the book assumes that you are intelligent enough to make decisions when given the facts. I am less worried and feeling proactive about being healthy in my pregnancy rather than "guilted" into it with "because I said so" logic that is so popular in our culture.

I found this book to be too far on the extreme side. This book basically says all goes when preggo. I can't beleive this one book over all the other information out there. I guess after reading it is alright to take ibprofin and smoke pot while preggo, I said enough is enough! If you want someone to tell you everything is o.k, no matter what you do, then is is the book for you. If you want to listen to all the other books and information you have ever hear, don't get this book.

Sensational dining book........2001-12-23

My first of " The Best of Gourmet" I purchased from the Department store just because it was on sale.
In that same evening I was cooking by that book. Now I am hunting for all editions.
Beautiful photos and absolutely the best gourmet food recipes, easy to follow and you will get what its promised.
I know, you will love it.
Also, what a great section " Featuring the flavours of ....(every edition will have different countries).

Gourmet is the best cooking magazine and the "Best of" books are even better. Forget the magazine, just get these books. No tiresome ads for Rolex and rich people on pristine tropical beaches. Just the food and great recipes. The thyme scented apple galette (either in this issue or another one) was an instant winner in my house. The Greek recipes are great. I particularly remember the recipe for gigantic lima beans.

Most recipes are thoughtfully staged. They tell what can be done ahead of time. They also give suggestions on complimentary dishes.

All this and in durable hardback.

Not a typical survivor book filled with hate, but more an accounting of the many good people who step up in horrific situations. An easy entertaining read, the chapters seem to flow, hard to put down until finished. Very easy to get involved and caught up in the events that happened. The author has a good memory for details of a traumatic time in his and the world's life.

Simon Jeruchim, the author of this memoir,was twelve years old when his secure world came to an end. With amazing recall,he relates how he came to hide in a small hamlet in Normandy. He worked on a farm, a harsh life for a small Parisian boy. Hardest of all was not knowing about his parents and small brother. He went dutifully to church and hid his identity from everyone. By nature optimist, he was looking forward to the end of the war and reunion with his family. He was reunited with his brother and sister, but his parents did not survive, unfortunately. This book is a beautiful example of a boy's courage and determination to stay alive.

a new perspective.......2003-09-30

this book was given to me as gift. i have a deep interest in matters pertaining to the holocust, and i was told that the book held a different perspective from other publications regarding the nazi era. and it surely did.....the author made no attempt to judge the nazi and the french in that era. all he did was relate this fascinating story, and i drew my own conclusions.

the book traces his journey, as a parentless jewish boy,keeping a step ahead of the nazi and french, and extermination..a brave human being. . mr. jeruchim is a talented artist, as evidenced by the wonderful pictures which he drew, and are included in the book.

Simon Jeruchim takes you into the horrible world of escaping and hiding from french collaboraters and the Nazis during the second world war. His narrative is so compelling that you practically relive his day to day existence. His recount of the compassionate gentile families who hid him and his siblings is written staight from his heart.

Looks like a good intro.......2001-01-29

I'm very new to online investing, and bought this book from my local bookstore. I just found it here to send a copy to my sister. It it seems like a very comprehensive introduction to the investment resources available on the internet without bias towards any one method of investing over another. However, the author doesn't hesitate to tell which resources he has personally found to be more usefull in the past and why. I took a quick look at the first 25 books Amazon listed in this category and didn't find anything I'd consider sending instead.

Good Book Will Save you a lot of time.......2001-01-26

Harry Domash has done a good job of putting together a whole lot of information in one place, from trading to financial analysis to technical analysis. The trading chapter could have been a little more with a comparison of major on-line brokerages. One thing which I did not find mentioned in the many books I have read so far and found out the hard way is that some brokerages place a bid related cap on buy stops and sell stops, i.e. if the current bid price is $25 your sell stop can be no higher than $24.25. This can be a real turn off. Additionally, it would also save the readers a lot of aggravation if books like Harry's could say something about the less than fantastic load times of some of these sites. That said, this book has good concise information for beginning to intermediate investors..

A Polonaise of Self Indulgence.......2002-02-02

A distinguished historian certainly has something to say, but what does a boy who left Poland at the age of 10 in 1930 have to say about Jewish life in inter-war Poland. Obviously not much. But Prof. Hamerow puts into the mouth or pen of a ten-year old the thoughts of a mature historian in his eighties. A more vain mismatch can hardly be imagined.
