Book Description
When there's a disabled child in the family, how are normally developing siblings affected? According to Kate Strohm, a counselor and health educator, siblings of the disabled face particular emotional challenges that are often overlooked. Able siblings commonly struggle with feelings of isolation, grief, anger, and anxiety—and these and other emotional issues can have lifelong effects. Being the Other One is based on the author's own experience (as a sibling of a sister with cerebral palsy) and on extensive interviews she conducted with siblings of all ages. In clear and compassionate terms, Strohm explores the often secret feelings of siblings and offers valuable strategies for coping with the challenges they face. Being the Other One reveals the difficulties faced by siblings at all stages of life, from early childhood through adulthood, when siblings must often assume responsibility for the care of their disabled brothers and sisters. Though the book looks honestly at the many challenges that siblings face, it is full of encouragement and practical strategies. Strohm emphasizes that when siblings are able to clearly identify and openly express their feelings and concerns—and when parents and health professionals offer the needed support—siblings can thrive. This book includes writing exercises for personal exploration and a substantial resources section listing helpful books, organizations, and websites.
Customer Reviews:
Compassionate and insightful........2007-09-18
I grew up with a disabled younger brother, and am only now, in my 40s, starting to realize what affect that had on me, and on my way of reacting to life. This book gives me permission to explore this, without feeling guilty. I thank the author for her compassion and frankness. The many examples and testimonies allow a glimpse of many kinds of different affects, depending on different family situations. I highly recommend this book. It helps me understand myself a little better.
Giving voice to the "unspoken".......2005-10-02
When I chose this book, I thought I would be adding to my teacher-knowledge of people with special needs and their families. I was stunned to find myself crying: this was me! I was reading about me and my family! The roots of my lifelong struggles and current stress were made plain. But who in MY family had special needs? I never thought of it that way. My sister has struggled with her weight and moods all her life, and so have we all. I am "the other one," and now I know why. I highly recommend this book, for speaking the "unspoken." Knowledge gives us the ability to understand, and to heal. At the end of each chapter are both a summary and strategies to deal with these issues. The author has given us an amazingly practical, working tool, in easy to read format. Whether you are a family member, teacher, or health professional, you'll be glad you read this book.

Book Description
As thousands of wines from around the globe enter the marketplace and the American palate continues to adopt flavors from a range of cultures, the task of pairing wine and food becomes increasingly complicated. No longer is the choice simply red or white, or wines from California, France, or Italy. The typical shopper today has access to wines from those regions plus South Africa, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia. If that isn't confusing enough, Asian, Latin American, and Creole dishes might find their way onto the same table. Perfect Pairings, by well-known Master Sommelier and respected restaurant industry veteran Evan Goldstein, provides straightforward, practical advice for choosing the right bottle for each meal. The quintessential resource for matching wine and food, this book includes 58 companion recipes developed by celebrated chef Joyce Goldstein that showcase each type of wine.
Perfect Pairings combines in-depth explorations of twelve grape varietals, sparkling wines, and dessert wines with guidance about foods that enhance the wide range of styles for each varietal. Whether the Chardonnay is earthy and flinty; rich, buttery, and oak-infused; fruity and tropical; or aged and mature, Goldstein explains how to match it with dishes that will make the wine sing. His clear, educational, and entertaining approach towards intimidating gastronomical questions provides information for all readers, professional and amateur alike.

Six seasonal and special occasion menus
Tips for enhancing food and wine experiences, both at home and in restaurants

Great on content, poor on photos.......2007-09-28
If you don't care that much about photos with recipes, this book is excellent on text. There is a photo section in the middle but personally I like to see at least half of the cookbook with accompanying photos. I gave this as a first anniversary gift to my son and daughter-in-law because they enjoy both wines and foods. She liked it a lot for the information about how to combine dishes and also the sections on history of the wines/regions. It is weak on information about American wines and in some cases it might be difficult to find some of the foreign wines mentioned. I would probably use it more as a reference book than a standard cookbook.
chef and wine specialist.......2007-05-12
very comprehensive, touches on all wine types and their attributes matched with food. Great recipes also. This book should be studied and savored by all who are interested in wines and in how to pair them with
foods.
Solid good advice, good for main or back up book!.......2007-05-02
I wish that I could have the knowledge of this book by osmosis. To read Evan's insightful comments about a wine, then to read suggestions on food pairings with that wine, is a delight. Additionally, Joyce's ample recipes, some simple, some complex, are well chosen, and a strong plus for adventuresome cooks to buy this book.
This was my favorite pairing book (and there's several books out there!) till recently.
When I saw a copy of "What to Drink with What You Eat: The Definitive Guide to Pairing Food with Wine...by Andrew Dornenburg, I realized that Dorenberg had "one-upped" this good text in different ways. One can find the food type, or the dominant spicing or saucing, then work backwards to the wines that are better suited. This is a more intuitive way for most people not well versed in different wines, and is better for me, as I need to match a wine to a fish's sauce more than to the fish. Still it does not diminish my appreciation for Perfect Pairing one bit. Evan Goldstein's Perfect Pairings does acknowledge this importance as well on pages 22-23 and 26-7, however many readers may gloss over this. The book is not as well geared as Dorenberg's in my opinion, for things such as spicy or some Asian or other ethnic foods, your mileage may vary.
Additionally, Dorenberg's book expands one's options with a food to go beyond wine for pairings, to include spirits, beer, etc. This makes more sense, as I just love a good beer with some things (some Asian food, German foods, etc.) that just don't work as well with recommended wines. The drawback (or plus, to some) to Dorenburg's book is that it isn't a text as Goldstein's. Dorenburg's book, after a few brief text chapters, is an extensive alphabetical listing of numerous foods and beverages, followed by their matches, with no explanation present, or felt needed.
I like Goldstein's Perfect Pairings dessert/dessert wine chapter, for example, having a sweet tooth. This section gives a good overview of different wines (late harvest, fortified, sparkling), and then separately talks about tree/stone fruit desserts, creamy and custard desserts, nut and dried-frut desserts, and finally the chocolatee, coffee, and caramel desserts..and recommends appropriate wines for each dessert classification.
Glance through both wine pairing books, and see which book style suits your needs best. I enjoy aspects of both, for different reasons, and appreciate each for it's strengths.
No calorie Count........2007-04-06
I ordered this book and upon receiving it was very excited about pairing wine with food--then I realized there were no calorie counts or other pertinent information with the recipes. Our family is very calorie/fiber conscious and I have vowed I will never buy another cookbook with this information. Therefore I just returned the book. If it ever comes out again with this stuff in it I might reconsider it.
One person's opinion.......2007-03-31
There aren't any vegetarian meals, and I don't eat much on their dining list, so it wasn't very useful to me. Nice hard bound book though.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely great!.......1998-11-30
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a very warm and tender true story about all the cats and other animals that live on Mr. Caras's farm. I can hardly wait to read another of his many books.
One of the best cat books I've ever read.......1998-06-11
Roger Caras, a very talented writer and animal lover, takes us on a tour of Thistle Hill, his farm in Northern Maryland. Anyone who loves cats, dogs and other animals will love this book. Its gentle humor and compassion are quite absorbing. I must confess to a certain amount of jealousy, though--I would love to have a home like Thistle Hill Farm!
Outstanding, well written, and entertaining........1997-12-17
This is an outstanding, well written, entertaining book. Cat and animal lovers should all enjoy it. The book has a beautifully illustrated cover and nice pictures inside of various animals. The book covers not only various adventures of different animals but also shows their intelligence and emotional natures. Roger Caras, the author, writes in a clever, down-home, folksy way. The author also shows his deep caring, respect, and understanding for his many 4-legged friends.
My vet loaned me her copy. I like it so well I plan to buy my own copy and also one for a friend. I look forward to reading other books by Roger Caras. He has written over 60. Nancy Allen, Ada, Oklahoma
Lives and Philosophy of Cats and animal companions.......1997-04-18
In the Cats of Thistle Hill, Roger Caras writes a
story that is like reading about the peaceful environment of Ann of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, animal version. Besides feeling the peaceable nature of Thistle Hill and its environment, you read about the lives of different cats living at Thistle Hill, their personalities, and finally if you have ever thought about the philosophy of cats, you will have that conversation with Roger Caras in this book. Especially, note Teddy, a scarred cat rescued from the streets of San Francisco, who won't have anything to do with other animals until he discovers Emmy. Teddy goes on to become a single parent father of three kittens whom he mothers, protects and loves Teddy's story not only is an interesting true story, but it makes the point that animals have feelings. There are other equally beautiful stories of cats, a llama, dogs, a burro etc. in this book.

beautiful wedding decorations and gifts on a small budget.......2004-07-09
Lots of tips on everything from the engagement party thru wedding party gifts on to the getaway vehicle. There are plenty of nice line drawings which should help the do-it-yourselfer. This book was a bit to frilly(lots of ribbons and bows)for my taste, but if thats your kind of thing, it would be great.
You can do it, cheaply.......2003-04-11
After a lot of research on weddings, I bought this book about a year before my 1996 wedding, and although I never used it for that wedding I kept it because of the ideas that can be used for occasions other than weddings. Biscotti was "hot" at that time, and she has an easy recipe for it to bag and give as gifts. Gift baskets are included as well as something called a "crazy quilt," which looks easy and I hope to attempt one day (mostly to use up all my fabric scraps.)
While some of the other reviewers called it "girly," and I agree, but there are more ideas than most people would use. Mrs. Warner's other books also contain the same types of ideas.
The overblown bridal "industry" will have you believe that if you want a "proper" wedding, spending $10K to $20K is reasonable. It's not. It is NOT necessary to mortgage your future on a one-day event. That kind of money is a degree! Enjoy your day, of course, but don't blow it on a party. Reasonably priced weddings with all the trimmings are possible. I did it, and it was because I did research before I spent a dime.
Small budget, HAH!! Maybe for Bill Gates.......2002-01-31
I don't know where the writer of this book comes from, but it must be from money. There is nothing in this book for a normal bride trying to save money. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone on a budget. It was a total waste of time and money.
Too much hearts and flowers.......2000-03-24
I have to agree with the previous review; I found the book to be more girly than upscale. Fortunately, I bought the book used, so it wasn't much of an investment. But, yes, if you're looking for "Cinderella", you might find tons of romantic ideas that can keep you within a budget. This book is useful as a starting point, to get your creative juices going. If you're looking for truly unique, memorable, and modern, this book is not for you.
I found the book to be a great help for the reception.......1999-09-18
We created the tulle gazebo that is in the book. Other than adding a few extra touches, we did extacly how it was described. We received many compliments on it. I also did some of the favors, and incorporated some of the idea themes into our ceremony and reception. This book may not be for the "Modern Bride", but it is worth looking at if you are wanting to have a "Cinderella Wedding" without the expense.

A Triumphant of the Human Spirit.......2000-01-11
Joseph Korn's story of his father's triumph as a young man surviving the worst experiences of the holocaust caught me by surprise. I was not expecting such a spiritually uplifting story. Abe Korn not only survived the most arduous physical and mental trials through the most horrifying of experiences, he survived with incredible humanity intact that bore no hatred or malice to his captors. This is the most spiritually uplifting book I've ever read on the holocaust, and of the rare type that surely must have insprired Roberto Benigni in his Emmy-award winning movie 'Life is Beautiful.'
This might be the best book you can read........1998-02-15
Abram Korn was a man of great courage. After suffering at the hands of the Nazis in a ghetto and, later, in many concentration camps, he still did not lose his faith, his courage, or his humanity. In fact, he ended up marrying a German girl! This book lets us have a glimpse of what day-to-day life was like in the camps, and how much survival mattered.
A wonderful book.......1997-03-27
This is a wonderful book. It showed that to be a survivor of the Holocaust required ingenuity, resourcefulness, luck and
faith. The ending of the book brought tears to my eyes. Abe
Korn was the epitome of the meaning of the word Mench.
