5 out of 5 stars A Laughing Out Loud Memoir of a Navy Officer.......2007-04-16

Author "Walter "Bud" Stuhldreher's wonderfully funny book "Sour M.A.S.H. At Sea and Other Stories" is one of those books that will catch you laughing out loud. It is military humor presented by a former Navy supply officer during the Korean War on a medical ship. It is really so much more than that however and one story (tall tales might be a better way to describe them) after another lays out a most unusual life and highlights the comical side of the author's experiences.

This book was enjoyable and is even funnier when you realize that these stories are the non-fiction (except for one) experiences of the author. You cannot help but love the guy. The book is a must a read for anyone with Navy roots or just loves a good entertaining and funny book.

The writing is a relaxed story telling narrative that makes you feel like the author is talking to an old friend about his life. The author makes the reader feel good--what more could you ask for from a book in this stressed out world of today! The book deserves to be on your bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars SOUR M.A.S.H. IS MASH WITH A TWIST.......2003-08-01

SOUR M.A.S.H. is a great comic collection of true, if tall, tales from the life of "Bud" Stuhldreher (nephew of one of Knute Rockney's Four Horsemen of Notre Dame). These wild tales range from Ensign Stuhldreher's life on the hospital ship USS Haven during the Korean War to naval escapades in the Mediterranean, to golfing adventures abroad and at home -- "Why U.S. Steel Fired Me Over A Golf Game," to the glory days of Cape Canaveral's Space Program (with personal insights about individual heroic astronauts), even to Stuhldreher's frolics as a performing magician.

The book opens with a brawl between the army and navy in Korea and just about closes with the magician and his golfing audience hurling hard golf balls back and forth at each other. In between there is so much to laugh at, you wonder whether Stuhldreher should have been a stand up and knock them down comedian.

Stuhldreher is a gifted writer. He knows where his audience is, how to get them into the scene, and how to get them where he wants to take them. As an old WWII vet myself, I can tell you he writes the way we talked back in the wars of the 1940's and '50s. (Not Poltically Correct.) He brings that long gone era directly before us, the way we were.

I have a young grandson who is leaving for the Navy in a few days. I'm giving him my copy of SOUR M.A.S.H. AT SEA..., and I'm getting a new copy for myself. The book is for just about everyone -- especially us old vets who deserve one more rich laugh before we die. But who didn't love the great T.V. series M.A.S.H.? SOUR M.A.S.H.... goes that series one better: every incident and every character (save one) in the book is real. One more proof that truth can be at least as funny as fiction.

SOUR M.A.S.H. ought to be on TV -- or in your hand.

Although this book focuses on many events that happened back in the Korean war era, the story telling, the characters and the humor are timeless. How can you not enjoy a chapter with the title "The Day twenty crazed Japanese mermaids tried to kill me"? Although many of the stories cover personal events in war, the stories range from Korea to the trials and tribulations of being an amateur magician. Although best read sequentially, you can read them out of order and still find yourself laughing out loud at the situations the author finds himself in. A really great read when you need cheering up!

      Book Description

In this autobiography of his early life (1800-1834), George Bentham, nephew of the great Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, offers a lively depiction of the times, both in England and on the Continent, particularly of post-Napoleonic France, where he lived with his family for twelve years. Returning to London as his uncle Jeremy's assistant, he recounts his experiences in this role and his encounters with many of the leading, and the rising, figures of the day, such as Alexander von Humboldt and John Stuart Mill.

An emerging figure himself in the field of botany - where he would prove to be one of the great taxonomists of the century - George Bentham worked creatively for the scientific societies he joined, activity that culminated in his becoming an unofficial ambassodor-at-large at scientific congresses in Europe in the 1830s, which he describes in enthusiastic detail.

The text of the manuscript, preserved in the Archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is published here for the first time, with an introduction providing historical context, explanatory notes, and indexes of plant names and of persons and works mentioned. A fascinating story in itself, this autobiography provides a new resource for Utilitarian studies and for historians of science.

      Book Description

Reclaiming Our Health is best-selling author John Robbins biggest and most important book to date. Elaborately researched and fluidly written, Reclaiming Our Health is a provocative and crystal-clear commentary on one of the most complex issues facing America todaynational health care. In an epic look at the human and financial consequences of the polarization of traditional and alternative medicine, John Robbins calls for nothing short of a revolution in the basic beliefs on which traditional health care is provided.

Robbins has written a masterpiece that will be as popular with people unhappy with the medical establishment as Diet for a New America is with critics of the meat industry. Although we spend $1 trillion each year on health care, the toll in human suffering from degenerative disease continues to rise and many in our country cannot afford basic health care. Meanwhile, women are growing increasingly frustrated with the care they receive from a male-dominated system; and the incidence of dangerous communicable diseases is growing.

There are answers to these problems and the myriad others that we face, but the dogmatic and monopolistic beliefs held by modern medicine are preventing us from finding the. Reclaiming Our Health presents a brilliant, refreshing, and uplifting new vision of what health care might be.

5 out of 5 stars A Heartbreaking Look at Modern Medicine.......2007-08-21

I have been a "health nut" for years and wary of the medical establishment, but I always hoped that the mainstream approaches, though ineffective, were a result of ignorance or narrow mindedness.

In Reclaiming Our Health, John Robbins has exposed the greed and pride of a male-dominated medical community in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. Reading about the witch hunts (past and present) against alternative healing practices outrages me, but what hurts more is reading how modern medicine treats its patients. People, at their most vulnerable times, are trampled upon by doctors and nurses.

The section on how medicine has historically regarded women is eye opening (or would be if you had never dealt with a male obstetrician). Having just given birth to my son, accompanied by a midwife, and knowing what an amazing and challenging time that can be, I almost cried reading the horror stories of children's births.

John Robbins has written a phenomenal book. And as always, he has brought his caring, compassionate passion to an issue that is literally crippling our nation. Thank you, John.

5 out of 5 stars I thoroughly recommend this book.......2003-09-08

I read this book first in sections, but then decided to read the whole thing as my interest progressed.

I already knew some of the persecution of the chiropractic industry by money-hungry conventional doctors, but some of the stuff totally shocked me. I've seen some of the statistics that chiropractors have come up with, extensive studies that show that it has extremely low health risks and helps a lot more with lower back pain than conventional "give me the pill" medicine. However, this book totally blew the cover off the...American Medical Association, an organization I once took for granted to be dedicated to my health and well-being.

If everyone in the waiting room of a doctor's clinic were to read this book, all health care in America would be for the better.

Furthermore, the interesting sections on women and fertility totally blew me away. I was furious at the stuff they were doing to hurt and control women who went to doctors for real health reasons, hoping to get better, only to be subjected to the standard system of running tests and being tied to one position. I myself was delivered by C-section, and having been abandoned by my mother, I can also attest to the ugly and disgusting nature of conventional birth documented so well by John Robbins. The persecution of midwives, who have near-flawless records for safe delivery of newborn babies was also shocking. I had no idea that women giving birth at home do better than in hospitals, in terms of mortality rates.

The final section is worth reading alone if you have cancer. It states very clearly using facts and actual experiences how deliberately and unfortunately the medical establishment has been "treating" people (if I may use that word) with cancer, without realizing that the only goal of a person with illness is wellness and wholeness, not merely to eradicate and destroy an organism that seems foreign and toxic. It also exposes the "fact" that there have been cancer treatments with possible cures, existing for decades, which have been blocked by the cancer establishment out of hope for conventional therapies, blind ignorance, or fear of malpractice suits (you can be sued for not using "technology" to treat an illness ... but what if you just want to get better?).

The beauty of John Robbins' words inspire me. It's hard not to be moved by good stories of good doctors helping to make things better. It's hard not to believe that things could also be better if we changed our current system. Always true to form, this book discusses ways in which to reform health care that would truly work, and at minimal cost.

If you're a nonbeliever of universal health care, low-cost medicine, or just out of luck with personal illness, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book BEFORE You or Someone You Love Becomes Ill.......2003-08-28

Over the past thirty years I have read about 100 books on the subject of health. Among the very best of the books I have read are two of John Robbins' other books, Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution, but I don't feel the need to review these remarkable books; they have been well reviewed by others, and I recommend you check them both out in Amazon. However, I simply had to add my voice to the reviews of Reclaiming Our Health.

This book is predominantly about the medical establishment, what has gone wrong with it, and what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones (if you can get them to listen to you). It is not a condemnation of all things conventional nor an endorsement of all things alternative. Some of the greatest heroes of the book are M.D.'s practicing both conventional and alternative therapies. This book seeks to guide us to the best of both worlds while warning us about the dangers to be found in each. However, the worst dangers by far appear to be in the conventional medical establishment where the admonition "first, do no harm" seems to have been long forgotten.

This book made me cry. This book infuriated me. It is filled with one outrage after another. But wouldn't you rather read about them than be subjected to them (or watch your loved ones be subjected to them) by not being informed beforehand? I know I would.

This is one of those rare books that is truly empowering. That's what John Robbins does so well. He does the intensive research that most of us neither would nor could do. We are blessed by his enormous contribution to mankind.

And my fellow women, you will be shocked to read some of the material in this book on how women have been treated in society and how this has influenced the way we have been treated by much of the medical community. I have shared a bit of the information with co-workers and have actually seen jaws drop open. We have not been told the complete story of how dreadfully many women have been treated in our history. It is an abomination. (Written with apologies to all of the sincerely wonderful men out there.)

Rest assured that among the very bad news of this book is a good deal of hopeful news about prevention and treatments that are out there now, but this information will probably be a long time coming to the general public. It is only through leaders like John Robbins that we are blessed to know about it now.

Read this book before you or someone you love becomes ill. Read it and pass it on.

5 out of 5 stars 10 stars Articulate accurate and timely.......2003-04-20

Since I own and have read other books the author has written I was curious to see what he would share in this book on a subject that is so important to me and many Americans. And he certainly hasn't let me down.

The parts or chapters I liked so much and thank the author for, from the bottom of my heart are Part Two where he goes into great detail about the patriarchal medical system. It is worth the price of the book alone. I also like Part Three where he starts out with a quote from a signer of the Declaration of Independence (Dr Benjamin Rush) who said "Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship". And he offers so much documentation of where and how the big boys of the AMA (American Medical Association) have even gone after their own members who dared not walk the party line. On page 185 he shares how from homeopaths, to midwives, and other nontraditional medical forms, the AMA has been the bully boys who wanted their monopoly and none others. On page 1996 onward he describes once again how the feminine professions which nursing was up until the 1970's, were main targets of the male member run AMA.

Now I was aware that one way the male physicians made midwifery which had been the norm well into the 1900's, illegal was to accuse the women delivering babies of being everything from witches, pagans and even communists. Yet delivering babies in the safe and secure environment had been good enough for Moses, Jesus, George Washington and most heroes and heroines but because the AMA had discovered there was big buck in babies they did everything in their power to make their way the only way to deliver babies and feather their nest along the way. And as the author notes on page 322 that while birthing centers and midwives are persecuted by the AMA the actual cesarean rate here in the United States is outrageous and is a procedure that the rest of the civilized world shuns.

On page 327 onward the author skillfully lays out documentation that shows that many of the plagues the world has suffered have not been cured by AMA style medicine but by common sense approaches like clean water and sanitary toilet system. Washing hands and handling food in a clean manner. And that malaria is kept at bay with more preventive means than medical ones.

I could go on, but I would prefer that you buy the book and if possible buy a copy for your local library if it does not have a copy. That is how important this book is.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book..........2002-12-20

"Reclaiming Our Health" is turning out to be one of the most influential books in my life, and I plan on giving every woman in my life a copy for Christmas this year.

Robbins explodes the myths and outright lies surrounding conventional medicine, alternative medicine, the American Medical Association, the tobacco industry and cancer research. And he doesn't just make wild accusations, he supports his work with a library of footnotes (some of which I've followed up on) and studies. I am honestly stunned and amazed at the horrible decisions made by America's medical community - shunning and destroying alternative approaches over the years, unleashing scare" campaigns to keep us supporting conventional medicine (and our doctors' wallets) and ignoring crucial medical data from alternative sources.

Did you know that the American Medical Association used to be a huge supporter of the tobacco industry & even while our Surgeon General had proof that smoking was horrible for you, they still refused to speak out against smoking... because then they would lose the financial support of the industry (and this didn't just go on for a year or two)? Did you know that chemotherapy & radiation, for most forms of cancer, do absolutely nothing in terms of life-span (sometimes even shortening it)? Did you know that infant mortality rates in the U.S. are higher than most developed, and even some "3rd World" countries, and that most C-sections & hysterectomies are completely unnecessary? Or that midwives have a much better track record (for infant mortality & complications), yet the AMA basically outlawed their use over the past 30 years?

Honestly - I think every single American, especially women and those in medical fields should read this book. It's not a conspiracy theory book, nor is it some crazy person spewing accusations at everyone - it is a brutally honest look at OUR HEALTH, and what is more important?

      5 out of 5 stars Editorial Review.......2007-07-07

      New Age Retailer, November/December 1996
Have you ever watched a friend or loved one die? Did you wonder why they had to endure so much, especially at the hands of those you had expected to help? Have you ever wondered why it is taking so long to find a cure for cancer or AIDS? Have you ever had a baby in this country? Have you every tried to tell your healthcare provider something and been told he or she know best and not to worry? I believe these questions would elicit at least one affirmative answer from just about everyone in our country.

The title is descriptive and, I believe, correct - we will feel an explosion from reading this book. People will be shocked and angered. I certainly was! John Robbins has let the cat out of the bag - the cat being the way Americans are manipulated by the American Medical Association, the tobacco industry, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and by the multi-million dollar industry we call healthcare.

Robbins reveals the cover-ups, the scandals, and the greed that feed on the most vulnerable segments of our society: women, children, the elderly, and those who are already struggling with health issues. He exposes the ridicule and outright lies broadcast in an attempt to eliminate chiropractic and other alternative healing practices, not because they were not helping those who sought out alternative care, but because they were taking money from those who would rather line their pockets than cure millions of ill individuals.

Robbins outlines a practical approach using both conventional and alternative care so that we can benefit from the best of both resources. This book is well-written and researched. It has an extensive notes section that documents facts and a resource directory that give pertinent information about where to obtain more information on womens issues, parenting and children, healthy diet, alternative medicine, consumer rights, and much more. I would recommend this book to any adult, especially someone who is dealing with medical issues. Reclaiming Our Health is a must-read for any person who strives to be well-informed.

5 out of 5 stars Bailey has just become the newest and possibly the most important member of our family........2005-11-19

Back in February of this year we lost Binki,a Lhasa Apso cross Poodle after 17 wonderful years.Prior to that we had a Dachshund,Max, who spent 14 years with us as our 3 children grew up.So,as we are now seniors, our children are all married, and now that we have 8 Grandchildren;we faced the facts and felt our dog owning days were probably behind us.
That is what we thought,we found Bailey, she has now joined the two of us and getting a new puppy was one of the best decisions we've ever made. She is a Yorkshire Terrier cross Teacup Poodle. She will be small, about 7 pounds, doesn't shed and has all the features of what we could want in a dog.She is 12 weeks old,we've had her over a month, and I believe she finds us acceptable.By this point, you can see Bailey is a pet,a member of the family is more like it,and we have no intrest in breeding or showing.Maybe I should qualify that bit about showing. We do a great amount of showing as a matter of fact, everyone in the neighbourhood has fallen in love with her and we can't complete a 10 minute walk in less than a half hour while showing her off and making friends with every person and dog we meet.
We,as the case of a lot of people who have dogs, tended to operate by trial and error in raising them, heck, didn't it work with the kids? Anyway ,I saw this book and thought maybe I could learn something. You've heard the old saying "You can't teach old dogs new tricks"There is simply no truth to that.I am learning lots and there is much more to be gleaned fom this book.
The book is only 160 pages and covers everything you could or should want to know about Yorkies. It will also be kept nearby for reference in the years ahead.
The book discusses how intelligent this breed is,and we have already seen signs of that.If there is anything that I might fault the book for,it is this.I am a very avid reader, but very disappointed that Janet has given absolutely no attention at all on helping me with teaching Bailey to read.I have already been reading to her,she obviously comprehends, nods at the right time, and even dozes off if the story gets too dull.I am convinced she could easily be taught to read, but for that,I guess I'm on my own.
Like I've already mentioned, and so have a couple of the other reiewers, the book covers a lot about breeding and showing in competitions, but that should not deter you from getting it.All the same principles apply, and your little friend is just as important to you and those around you as a Best of Show is to its owner and the show Judges.
Bailey is a great addition to our family and we intend to give her a lot of happiness and I know she will return any love many times over and that doesn't even take into account the companionship we'll all enjoy.
            Oh yeah, one other thing,Carol touches on the cost one takes on with getting a dog;but remember this;
"All it takes is money to buy a fine dog,but it takes love
to make it wag it's tail."

            3 out of 5 stars Yorkie.......2005-10-10

Being a new owner, I wanted a more practical book on the breed.
I found the author to be focused on the competitive aspect and
"quality" breeding lines. For someone who was looking at entering dog shows, this would be a useful book. For me, who
was looking for some insight at the pet level, it lacked practical applications.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent beginners guide.......1998-05-12

This book is an excellent guide for new Yorkie owners. It discusses all the practical things you need to know before purchasing a Yorkie, including feeding, grooming, training, and health. It is well-organized and very readable. A new Yorkie owner will probably want to also purchase a longer, more detailed book, but this one is a great starter -- enough info to take good care of your Yorkie, but simple enough to avoid confusion and information overload.

5 out of 5 stars I was asked to write a new edition of this book.......2005-05-07

Many years ago this book was out of print and someone I met had purchased the copyright. His name is in the front of the book.

He met me, learned that I was an author, interested in Taheebo, and asked if I would be interested in writing the new edition.

I said yes, and he paid my way up to Vancouver Canada where his office and all the research files for this book were.

I spent several days reviewing the research material -- motly in the form of case histories. I was eager to write that new edition, but ultimately we could not agree on a fee or deal.

I left. Since that time I have pursued my interest in Taheebo, and know of many people who have used the extract form of it to treat various health problems. My own wife was diagnosed with esophagust cancer in 2004 and despite a large batch of chemo and radition, she was eventually announced "cured" by medical doctors.

Taheebo was an important factor in her cure.

This book is well written and little appreciated -- now that it is out of print.

I highly recommend it to help shed light on a fantastic South American herb.

                    Book Description

Dr. Josef Issels cured cancer, but not just any cancer. He cured advanced, recurrent cancer--cancer that had laughed at radiation and thrived on chemotherapy. And he used different, gentler treatments. The people whom Issels had snatched from the fist of death loved him. But he had opponents as well. Rather than rejoice at the lives he saved, these medical professionals attempted to discredit Issels through slander, sanction, and lawsuits. They had him arrested, jailed, and put on trial. But the courts acquitted Issels and the media trumpeted the story. Independent scientists verified his groundbreaking cures and medical journals published his work. A BBC London documentary made him an overnight international medical hero. The German Government awarded him a position on its Federal Cancer Commission. Long before the terms "alternative" and "complementary" were part of American medical culture, Dr. Issels created the world's first fully "integrative" cancer therapy. Issels hypothesized that primary and recurrent malignancies result from a tendency of the body to produce tumors--a tendency built on underlying problems that are potentially curable through comprehensive immunotherapy. Guided only by his desire to cure the patient, Issels made use of every weapon in his arsenal to reduce tumors, to strengthen the immune response, and to heal tissues. He brought together potent treatments from conventional medicine, holistic medicine, and marginalized medicine. In Cancer: A Second Opinion, the Father of Integrative Medicine describes the treatment that produced the most remarkable, independently verified cure rate in medical history--and explains why this approach can improve worldwide cure rates today.

5 out of 5 stars Questioning Cancer Orthodoxy.......2001-11-13

This book is perhaps the most important book written on cancer in the twentieth century. This is because Josef Issels demonstrated in his Cancer Clinic in Bavaria the most successful results ever achieved with late stage cancer patients (16.6% five-year survival and 15% fifteen-year survival - more than 5 times better than any orthodox therapy before or since.
Recent evidence continues to question the current paradigm that cancer is a local disease that later spreads. Issels instead saw cancer as a systemic disease that in its later stages showed observable symptoms, the tumours. Treating the tumours was therefore a waste of time unless the cause was tackled. He saw the causes as many, including physical, emotional and spiritual so he tackled all possibilities with dedication and a caring approach. The only contributing factor he apprently underestimated was the emotions. Four well-run randomised trials have since shown that simply tackling the emotional causes can have dramatic results, typically 50-70% increased survival times. But his Wholebody-therapy he used in the 1960s has still not been matched by any of the other alternative cancer therapists since. The book gives a history of the treatment of cancer over the past few thousands of years and goes into a lot of well-documented factors that make up his total treatment. Book Description

In this volume, the author is concerned with one of the key problems in the history of western art: the comet-like appearance of a new kind of painting in Northern Europe at the end of the 14th century. Never losing sight of the visual evidence before him, Pächt examines the work of Jan and Hubert Van Eyck, the Master of Flémalle and their contemporaries in the context of a changing intellectual world, the passage from medieval thought to a percep- tion that recognizes and embraces all facets of visible reality. 'Pächt's ability to analyse visual data and his capacity to link cause and effect remain a model of art historical discourse.'

Mira lived to tell the tale of the holocaust. She's carried the message of strength and forgiveness, of working through the horrors she's lived by bringing the message to all who will listen. This is a strange and different book: on the one hand, so repulsive, so unbelievable, yet, on the other hand, compelling. Several questions ran through my mind: how does a person continue to live with any humanity at all after such an experience; why does one person live, while all the rest die; what kind of magnetism did Mira have that encouraged people to help her?
I've met Mira; she lives here in my home town of Oak Ridge. She will speak before my class. Perhaps my questons will be answered, and I will know who Mira is after all.

                            5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" Book.......2006-04-13

Echoes from the Holocaust by Mira Ryczke Kimmelman is a riveting memoir that recounts her life as a child in Danzig to her life in the United States after World War II. Mira describes how the innocence, effulgence, and peace of her youth are shattered once the Nazi troops force her family to leave their home in Poland in October 1939. Embracing her Jewish heritage, Mira tells of how she strives to preserve her identity and pride as a Jew alive by receiving secret Hebrew lessons, attending prohibited Jewish gatherings, and becoming a member of the Zionist movement. Kimmelman refuses to let herself become discouraged when she learns that more than twenty of her family members and friends are killed by the SS officers.

Infused with aspirations, Mira does whatever she can to cope with the persecution she and others receive at the ghettos and concentration camps. After suffering from typhoid, physical torture, starvation, horrendous living conditions, and simple dehumanization, Mira continues to be a burning flame among all the melted candles. All her struggles and lucky moments become learning experiences.

Mira is able to move on with her life, after the end of the war in 1945. She marries Max Kimmelman, another Holocaust survivor, and has several children and grandchildren after. She gives them the names of her relatives and close companions so that her memories of them will live on. Although life in the United States becomes a bit of a struggle, Mira manages to carve out a content life with her husband and family. She continues to encompass her traditions and tell her story of survival.

The memoir is written simplistically, but with very powerful imagery and episodes, that capture Mira's moments effectively. Metaphors, similes, or hyperboles are not necessary to make this memoir memorable. The book is divided into several short chapters that make it an easy read. With cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, this book becomes a real page-turner. An atmosphere of hope surrounds the events Kimmelman depicts and reiterates the idea that Mira has survived for a purpose. No history book can tell a story such as this one. To capture the meaning and depth of the Holocaust, one must go out and read Mira Kimmelman's account.

                            5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable horror!.......2001-05-21

From a priveleged upbringing in pre-war Gdansk, the author and her family are deported first to Warsaw then to other ghettos and camps. The book is written in a frank, no-nonsense fashion and she really states the facts about what happened to her and her family. An amazing book and one that everyone should read.
