Book Description
Muench portrays war on a personal level, capturing the similarities and disparities between American and Japanese culture, from religion and the value of life, to the effects of Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor on the innocent people involved. This book follows a friendship that encompasses two cultures, two worlds and two people who are not as disparate as they had once imagined.

Present for my grandfather.......2003-05-22
I bought this book for my grandfather, who was also in the Pacific, during WWII and he loved it. He said he could relate to alot of the humourous and serious anecdotes the author shared. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good gift for their grandparents, or anyone interested in learning more about their wartime experience.

Book Description
Photos of author/originator illustrate sequence of all 19 movements and 1 pose in this gentle moving meditation which circulates and balances internal energy. Along with brief written instructions, photos provide the reader with an easy way to follow the patterns from start to finish. Introductory sections and those at the end of the book include complete information on the background and philosophy of this holistic discipline which can aid in stress reduction, relaxation, and a number of other physical, mental, and spiritual conditions for which society seeks guidance. Mr. Stone emphasizes that T'ai Chi Chih makes no claims whatsoever about "curing" any condition, though he points to potential benefits of regular practice and relates stories of practitioners who have attributed various kinds of improvement to T'ai Chi Chih.
The author explains how to do the Great Circle Meditation, a seated meditation that complements T'ai Chi Chih/Joy thru Movement, another way of circulating, stimulating and balancing the chi (internal energy).

Don't listen to others.......2006-06-01
I am writing in response to the person who left a comment on July 23, 2002. This person does not know what they are talking about. There are two forms of Tai Chi. One is this book, which is a easier method to learn. The other is Tai Chi Ch'uan, which is a more experienced version. If this person has read as many books as they say they have, they would know that. This is a good book.
Excellent qigong.......2005-04-30
Clearly, some who have rated the book low haven't taken the time for even the most cursory examination. They object that it is not "Tai Chi Chuan". Of course not, it is "Tai Chi Chih" and a quick reading of the introduction will reveal both the intent and the origin of Tai Chi Chih. I don't believe there is any attempt to mislead here, nor is the title a cynical marketing ploy.
What Tai Chi Chih is is an excellent qigong set designed entirely for health and meditation and which can provide many benefits of the far more difficult Tai Chi Chuan. It is very gentle and can be performed by almost anyone.
I have studied Tai Chi Chuan and a number of other qigong systems and have a strong basis for comparison. Different qigongs seem to produce different "qualities" or feelings/vibrations of qi. I find the effect of Tai Chi Chih to be quite perceptible, very pleasantly physical, very detoxifying, like a deep internal massage. Just a few days of practice begins to yield more energy and a feeling of more ease and balance. It circulates the qi very effectively and leaves my abdomen and back feeling very open, springy, and unravelled. The rocking on the feet draws up earth qi which is circulated within via arm movements.
Tai Chi Chuan feels a lot like this, when practiced correctly, but is more difficult to achieve. When practiced incorrectly, I have found it can actually exacerbate tension and energy blockages in the body.
Take time to study the movements of Tai Chi Chih and practice them for many days before making your own evaluation. It would be better still to learn from one of several videotapes on Tai Chi Chih.
Tai Chi Chih!: Joy Thru Movement.......2005-02-16
I am a taijiquan instructor and would advise anyone to be very warry of this title. The statement, "...complete information on the background and philosophy of this holistic discipline..." sent a big red flag up for me. Taijiquan was developed as a martial (fighting) art, not a "holistic discipline". Doing taiji will give you health benefits from the physical exersize, and through increased qi (chi) circulation (which must be taught), but it is not the primary reason the art was developed. If you are more interested in health/qi benefits, then get a book on qigong. There are many books that are far better than this one, buy authors that really know what they are talking about. One of them is Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming. Any of his books, tapes, or DVS's would be highly recomended.
A great Book Despite the Confusing Title.......2004-01-10
Sure, the title has "Tai Chi" in it and it really is't a Tai Chi book in the usual sense. Go beyond the title and you find Stone has given us a marvelous set of Chi Kung exercises that anyone can do.
The author realized that most people just do not have the discipline and patience to learn Tai Chi. So he took his years of experience among Chi Kung Masters, produced 19 forms that move the Chi and gave it as a gift to all of us.If you do not want to do Tai Chi, but want its benefits get this book or even better the tape.
Stone is an interesting sincere guy who has led a remarkable life. Read the description of his spiritual writings and background on other areas of Amazon.
So he shouldn't have called it Tai Chi Chih. So what. Other authors have done the same, "Tai Chi Chi Kung" Or Tai Chi that or Tai Chi this- not uncommon. It sells exercise books.
This is not T'ai Chi Ch'uan.......2002-07-24
If you want to learn T'ai Chi Ch'uan, look somewhere else.
I am not quite sure what the author was trying to achieve. Probaby trying to create his own style of Qigong and give it a marketable name. It is very misleading.
It appears to be a money making endevour as far as I can determine from related sites on the web.
I have over a hundred T'ai Chi Ch'uan books in my library, this is NOT one of them.

Not the best choice.......2006-08-06
The recipes are complicated and not a good fit for fondue parties nor family friendly. High calorie too...
Can't wait to have a fondue party now!.......2001-12-28
Last year a friend bought me a fondue set. Finally got the cookbook this year and was pleased to find the recipes fairly simple. This book offers various fondue recipes from cheese, chocolate, to Asian fondues with meat, etc. It explains each and different ways to fondue very well. I suggest this to anyone beginning their journey into using their fondue set!
Very diverse cookbook..............2001-07-22
....A friend bought me a fondue set for my anniversary, so I picked up this cookbook expecting the usual cheese and chocolate fondues. Well, not only did I get great typical fondue recipes, this book contains varieties of fondue that are completely new to me!! There are "bacchus" fondues in which meats are first marinated in a variety of alcoholic beverages, "Asian" fondues which are great so far, and "burgundian" fondues. Overall a very good, very intriguing cookbook!!

only east coast will get anything out of this book.......2007-10-04
I will never forget the time I was in Boston and helped a blind man board a subway train. The doors nearly closed right on him! A lady nearby was truly amazed that someone would be so nice as to help a stranger having difficulty.
This book is for those who rarely experience common courtesy and have no clue as to how to behave in a civil manner.
If you get much out of this book, it's time for some drastic action!
I think the author needs to move to a more friendly environment!
The narration may drive you insane.......2007-09-14
This review is specific to the Audio CD version of the book.
The material is worthwhile, though not very original. The tips serve as good reminders of communication tools most of us have heard before. Too bad the narration makes me want to tear my eyeballs out. The narrator (author) both over-enunciates and over-dramatizes to a disturbing degree (think of an NPR host gone wild). I highly recommend the print version over the audio cd!
Fantastic book!.......2007-08-18
Another great book which I love and highly recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You
10 Stars! I am making new friends and deepening the relationships I have.......2007-07-04
I read Leil Lowndes's "Good-bye to Shy" and it worked like magic to get me over my shyness. After reading that book, I wanted more. I thought "How to Be a People Magnet" was the next logical step. It was! I am so glad I read this book.
There are three things that I especially like about it.
One is that iIt progresses logically. It starts with 1) making strangers like you instantly and how to "win their hearts in ten words or less." Then 2) Things you can do to turn a stranger into a friend. 3) A section on how a man can win with woman and the opposite. 4) How to build a whole network of friends. 5) How to give depth to a new or existing friendship, or reawaken an old one.
Second, it is based on truth, all backed up by studies on "interpersonal attraction.." For instance, "being popular is not the same thing as people really liking you." And "You don't just mke friends, you earn them by the benefits you bring to a relationship like intelligence, wit, or kindness."
A part that was especially helpful to me because of my old shyness was "how to work a party like a politician works a room." Also the book tells "how to create chemistry" with someone.
Third, "How to Be a People Magnet" is not just general advice. It is broken up into 55 concrete steps or "clauses" you sign off on. I did all of them, or at least most of them, and I notice a BIG difference in how new people are drawn to me and how my current friends seem to be warming to me even more.
I highly reccomend this book if you want to make more friends and deepen the relationships you have.
Bravo, Leil. I can't wait to read your other books.
A unique and wonderful guide to making friends, quickly and for life. .......2007-01-29
This is NOT your average book with trite advice on "how to make friends" It is far superior in every way. The author discusses the extreme importance of friendship. (She was inspired to write this book when two of her friends saved her life.)
There is solid evedience for everything she says. (She references 77 sociological 77 which are annotated in the back of the book.) And third, like all Leil Lownds' books, they are so much fun to read. Stories about some of her "friends" had me ROFL.
I love the author's concept of "you don't just make friends, you EARN them" by being a person of value yourself. She calls it The First Commandment of Friendship: "You must have something in order to receive." In other words, you must develop likeable and valuable qualities yourself so you can be an important friend to others. Not only does she talk about how to make friends quickly and make them grow, but how to nurture and enrich the ones you have.
The author explores how different women's friendships are from men's, and whether a man and a woman can truly have a "platonic" friendship and, how to do it, if you want to turn a friend into a lover.
One of my favorite concepts is her exploration of the "in" crowd and that "being popular does not mean being liked." This too is based on studies. I could go on and on about her insights on friendship that I've never read anywhere else.
I tried one of Leil's techniques which is to dig up a very old friend and spend a few hours with them. She writes, "Whether the friendship continues (or you relize why it ended,") you will both receive a priceless gift. Each of you will come away with a fresh and profound new sense of self." I did.
I will be forever grateful to the author for the awareness of the importance of friends - how to make them quickly, shed the superficial ones, and keep the ones you want for a lifetime.

Book Description
Geza Vermes is known world-wide as an expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls and for his pioneering work, "Jesus the Jew". But in addition to that he is the living embodiment of Jewish-Christian relations in the context of an honest quest for the truth. Few scholars have had such a colorful and eventful life, the course of which he describes here. Born into a Hungarian Jewish family which later converted to Christianity, he received a Catholic education and was later ordained priest after the turmoil of the War. The quest for membership in a religious order led him to the Sion Fathers, in Louvain and then in Paris, where among other things he was introduced to biblical studies and became fascinated with the newly discovered Dead Sea Scrolls. Subsequent emotional turmoil from conflicting pressures made him ill , but a series of "Providential Accidents" which gave this book its title brought him to England, marriage, and a new fulfilled life, first in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then in Oxford, and to a public reassertian of his Jewishness. As well as telling a fascinating personal story, this book provides a vivid insider's account of developments in Scrolls research and of the lengthy battle with procrastinating editors over the "academic scandal of the century." These memoirs shed much light on the deep personal friendships and antagonisms and the complex, non-scholarly factors which accompany even committed study of the Bible, Qumran, and the Gospels.
Customer Reviews:
More Providence than Accident.......2004-05-10
An autobiography of the world's foremost expert on the Jewish Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls might seem like a snorer to anyone outside academe. But if you enjoy a good character novel, if Dickens or Trollope turn you on, you need to read Providential Accidents. Vermes' life is one of those stranger-than-fiction stories, with more Twists than Oliver, and more intriguing clerics and clerical intrigue than Barchester Towers. Born of non-observant Jews in pre-WW2 Hungary, the young Geza and his family convert to allow him access to better education. Soon he's in Catholic seminary (for much the same reason) and ordained. The War sends most of his family to the death camps, and Geza to Paris, where he joins an order dedicated to converting Jews. His career in Biblical scholarship leads the gifted priest to question his Church's views on Jesus, until he finally leaves both priesthood and Christianity, becoming, against all odds, the first professor of Jewish Studies at Oxford. A "novel-within-the novel" deals with Vermes' leadership of the movement to free the Dead Sea Scrolls from the grip of their restrictive and anti-Jewish guardians.
Vermes is neither novelist nor biographer, and the writing is a bit stuffy. And the book does leave one wishing for more insight into his inner process of "reconversion." Psychological novel this isn't; still, I expected a treatise and got a page-turner. Vermes is a hero.
The Life Experience of a Great Scholar.......2001-01-09
Providential Accidents - what a well-chosen title- gives a moving insight into the colorful life of a scholar who is world-famous for his pioneering work on the Dead Sea Scrolls and on the historical Jesus. It reveals also in a very impressive way Vermes's personal development starting from provincial Hungary between the wars to his appointment to the chair of Jewish Studies in the University of Oxford and to a Fellowship of the British Academy. A few extracts from the press reviews of the British edition will show the profound impact of this beautifully written book. "Geza Vermes changed accepted views of the life of Christ. Now he has written his own life: the story of a Jew who converted to Catholicism, became a priest, and has now reaffirmed his Jewishness" - The Independent, London. "Vermes believes that Jews and Christians have a lot to learn from looking at Jesus as he was 'thoroughly Jewish'" - The Jerusalem Report. "Providential Accidents is a remarkable story. Vermes' stunning autobiography provides constant evidence of the intuition, wholeness and humility that facilitated the 'providential accidents' which have shaped his life" -The Tablet, London (Roman Catholic) "It reads better than a novel" - Expository Times, Edinburgh.
"Providential" means no explanations.......2000-05-25
A very embarrassing book because it really tells us nothing wewant to know. What was it like growing up Jewish in wartime Hungary?Just a few inconveniences. Why did he become a priest? Not a word about belief in anything? Why did he leave the Church? Just seemed the best thing to do? How did he become a leading scholar of the Dead Sea Scrolls and of Jesus as a "Jew." Quite by accident. There isn't an answer to any real question here. But there is a lot of self-serving prose and a general attack on two centuries of Christian scholars who have found the capturing of the "historical Jesus" a difficult if not impossible task. For Vermes, it is pretty easy to get to the historical Jesus; all you have to do is to realize he was a first-century Jew!...
