Finding an old friend.......2007-01-09
I first read this book when I was a senior in High School. I never knew it had been made into a movie. I was thrilled to find it at Amazon. It is a very good book that takes you in the past when people had life a lot harder than we do today . Our country has come a long way since that time in our history. This is very entertaining. I was able to find the movie also at Amazon and am looking forward to watching it.

Easy, informative reading.......2007-09-09
The first exposure I had to the Loy family was when I read the book "Getting a Grip on Diabetes" written by this author's two sons who were both diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when they were six and seven. They mentioned in their book that their mother had also written a book, and I couldn't wait to read about living with diabetes from her perspective. I was not disappointed! Her writing style is so conversational and easy to understand. It was nice to read about how she and her family dealt with different aspects of parenting kids with diabetes. My 13-year-old son was just diagnosed three months ago, so this book helped me to get more comfortable with our new life with diabetes. I thoroughly recommend reading this book.
A MUST HAVE BOOK.......2007-05-29
This was a great book. My only wish is that I would have found it 2 years ago when my son was diagnosed. This is a book that is written for "normal" families that have been attacked by this stupid disease known as Type 1 diabetes. I will recommend it to anyone I come into contact that has a newly diagnesed child. Thank you for writing this book.
Excellent Resource.......2004-12-31
I have read quite a few books on Type I Diabetes since my now-10-year-old son was diagnosed 5 years ago. This book and the one by Ms. Loy's sons, Getting a Grip on Diabetes, are by far the best ones I have read. Helpful information in a readable form with suggestions that are easily incorporated in to anyone's life. This is the book I have shared with friends who have had children diagnosed with diabetes.
This book gave me great hope & relief........2003-12-04
When my 4 1/2yr old was diagnosed in 2002, I was so scared that the fun part of his life was over. I bought 10 books & decided to read this one first. I was so happy & relieved to read about this great woman's calm approach to her boys diabetes. Both of her boys were diagnosed before 7 & continued on to do great things with their lives. This is a must read, it will relieve some of your worries & give you hope that life does go on & your child WILL be just fine.
This book really helped!.......2003-02-07
When my daughter was diagnosed with diabetes last May, our dietician lent me a copy of this book--it helped me so much! I didn't know anything about diabetes at the time and was frightened out of my mind! Ms. Loy has so many fantastic coping ideas--I've put many to use--this book is a wonderful tool--especially for parents of newly diagnosed children.

Food for (clear) Thought!.......2007-01-26
This is so excellent! I am a firm believer in the fact that many people's ailments stem from food or environmental allergies caused by their diet. Unfortunately, they have often been raised on these offending foods since birth, so convincing them not only that this is the cause of their problems as well as convincing them to change is a huge challenge. Sometimes after years of no real help from doctors and failed diets, they are ready to listen. I found this extremely helpful for myself. I considered myself to be knowledgeable, healthy, and fairly allergy free. Still, I struggled with tiredness and never being able to shed those few extra pounds. Boy, was I surprised at what I learned! And it all makes such sense! The book and cookbook have been a great help!
My story.......2006-04-16
From January 12, 2006 to April 15,2006 I have lost over 30 pounds following the guidelines listed in this cook book. The foods are fun to eat. You have a wide variety so you don't go hungry and every day it is amazing to see the real you emerge. I highly recommend this product to anyone who has tried all the others and have not found the results they are seeking. Best of all - I never go hungry. This is a life change not a diet.

Customer Reviews:
The best baby shower book.......2007-08-03
I loved the recipes in this book. This book gives great ideas for giving a very nice baby shower. The ideas are not campy or hokey. The book has great pictures so, you can see what you can achieve. This baby shower book is doable and the recipes are great!
Find a Better Book.......2007-02-18
I found this book in the bargain section and purchased to plan my best friends baby shower. This book offered few useful suggestions and the recipes were nothing that would be served at a larger gathering. For a VERY small shower, this might be a helpful book. But for those of us planning for more than five people, this book offers no helpful solutions.
You'll know why the price is reduced..........2007-01-06
It is a pretty book, but for the advanced party throwers.
There are quite a few really difficult recipes. So if you're
looking for recipes, it might be good for you. Otherwise it
doesn't give many other ideas.
No patterns - No templates - Only Pretty Photos.......2004-03-21
I purchased this book online in the hopes of discovering some great creative ideas. Though the photos were wonderful, I was very displeased with the lack of actual crafty, DIY projects in the book. For the ones that were provided, there were NO templates or patterns to use. For example, page 29 references an adorable Daisy Flower Shaped invitation. The instructions meerily say, "Sketch your own 7" daisy template..." Sure, that is all fine and dandy... if I had drawing talent! It would of been great if the author would of supplied an actual 7" template in the back of the book to photocopy.
Lacking in substance.......2004-01-31
I agree with the reader from Manhattan - I was looking for a book with loads of ideas to pick from, not with 5 ideas elaborately laid out. If you happen to like one of the themes they suggest (which I don't even think are that creative, I've seen all the same ones online), then you're all set with a color scheme and menu. If not, you just wasted your money. (It's very quick to flip through - go to the bookstore and see if you like anything in it before buying.) If you're only going to buy one book, I'd recommend buying a general party-planning/catering book and get baby-specific ideas online.

Book Description
Every womanÂ's most powerful maternal role model is her own mother. But what about women who grew up feeling ÂundermotheredÂÂwhose mothers were absent, distracted, emotionally distant, depressed, or fell short in some vital way? How are they to become the good mothers they aspire to be?
Kathryn Black, whose own motherÂ's early death inspired her award-winning book, In the Shadow of Polio, probed for answers from experts in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, developmental psychology and social work, biology and anthropology. Black asks: Why are some people able to transcend troubled childhoods and lead satisfying lives and others are not? Through the voices of ordinary women across the country, in all stages and ages of mothering, she learns that there are ways to become a good mother without having had one of oneÂ's own. A beautifully articulate blend of memoir, research, and moving interviews with mothers and daughters, Mothering Without a Map is a powerful and self-affirming book that shows how Âwounded daughters can indeed become Âhealing mothers.Â
Customer Reviews:
A must read for all mothers.......2005-03-05
Black has excelled in this beautiful exploration of motherhood, and of what it means to nurture, to give, to love and be loved. Her sensitive and forgiving insight into the tangled job of mothering - whether undermothered, abandoned, or still very present in our lives - gives us all a psychological glimpse into the patterns of past, present and future mothering styles, the enormity of the role, and its impact on our development - with Maslow's hierarchy as a strong foundation. Black gives us heavy, but digestable information, and follows up with the compassion, humor, wisdom, and soft space required for us to fall. My new number one resource on all things parenting - an essential read.
Insightful and practical.......2004-08-23
I recommend without equivocation. "Mothering Without a Map" by Kathryn Black is not only well written -- excellent structure, suspenseful writing -- it is eye-opening in its conclusions. It goes beyond the thesis in "Motherless Daughters." Even if you had/have an excellent mother, and even if you like your own mothering style, I guarantee there will moments of insight for you.
Most of all I marvel at Black's balance in her information; under any other writer, this book would feel like the usual blame-the-mother for all of the world's ills. But Black, through humor and empathy, makes the deficits all mothers have surmountable and understandable.
Plus, you've got to see this bibliography at the end of book --
thousands of sources.
a gem of a book.......2004-07-17
As both a mother and a therapist who works with mothers, I was thrilled to find this book because of the gaping hole it fills on parenting bookshelves. It provides hope and reassurance that becoming a 'good mother' even when we've been under-mothered is both worth doing and do-able. I was impressed with the way the author connects some of the women's stories with relevant research information in a gentle way. It is a unique and timely book written for a generation of mothers who want to raise their children differently than they were raised but are not completely sure how to do that.
Interesting, Thought Provoking, Hard to Read.......2004-06-17
This book was well written but I gave it only three stars because instead of being written to a wide audience of women it is written for those who understand psychological theories and jargon. I have a degree in psychology so I understood the jargon and I was quite familiar with the theories but for someone who is not familiar with the jargon or theories will have a difficult time following this author's writing. If this author had just written about her story and her insights and the stories and insights of the women she interviewed she would have had an incredible book. The power of stories can be very healing and yet this author relies on theories and jargon to back up any of her insights or ideas. As someone who seeks healing in these stories, I don't need or want someone "proving" their ideas with theories that are just the "philosophies of men" and nothing more. This is still worth reading to gain the nuggets of gold from the story/insights she gained and the stories/insights of the women interviewed but the rest of it ought to have been edited out.
I cannot say enough about this book!.......2004-04-30
Mothering Without a Map changed my life. Until reading this book, I knew that something was wrong with the way I was raised - that I never felt safe or unconditionally loved - but I couldn't pinpoint the problem. Kathryn Black put my feelings into words. This book helped me to work through my anger toward my parents and come to a place of greater compassion. They're still not good for me, but I now have a peace about the state of our relationship and about my past. I can appreciate and emulate the positive things they did for me while accepting and moving past the negative. Before I avoided any of their behavior all together for fear that I would repeat the cycle of "undermothering." After reading this book, I can move forward with greater understanding and confidence in my mothering abilities. If you want a book that can truly turn your life around, this is it. Thank you Kathryn for putting together such a wonderful book!

Book Description
The story of Stella Goldschlag, whom Wyden knew as a child, and who later became notorious as a "catcher" in wartime Berlin, hunting down hundreds of hidden Jews for the Nazis. A harrowing chronicle of Stella's agonizing choice, her three murder trials, her reclusive existence, and the trauma inherited by her illegitimate daughter in Israel.
16 pages of B&W photographs.
Customer Reviews:
A Question of Guilt.......2006-07-13
Wyden mixes personal reminiscences about his youthful schoolboy infatuation with schoolmate Stella with a history of the persecution of Jews in Berlin and Stella's ever duplicitous role in it. Ultimately, he portrays a pathetic, lonely and isolated woman who refuses to acknowledge any guilt, real or alledged, or personal responsibility in betraying Jews to the Gestapo.
This book is history and personal anecdote while concurrently begging thought provoking questions about guilt and capitulation. One could easily conclude that had Stella been born in a different place at a different time she would have been a totally ordinary person living out an uneventful life. Sometimes it almost seems that Wyden wants to believe this too. For her part, she claims that even had there been any cooperation with the Gestapo it was to spare the lives of her parents. Is she guilty out of concern for her parents (they ultimately perished) and therefore somewhat forgiven by the "I was just obeying orders" defense so frequently echoed throughout World War II and VietNam; or is she guilty because an ordinary person was born into and negatively impacted by the truly bizarre and cruel world of 1940s Berlin?
Stella is ultimately a disturbing portrait of a truly personal human tragedy; her own and those who suffered for it.
Blond Betrayer.......2006-04-30
Few can match the infamous Blond Poison, Stella Goldschlag, who stalked the alleys of Berlin seeking former friends, School Classmates and neighbers as as well as total strangers not out of loneliness but in order to betray them and send them to the Gas Chambers to be murdered in her place during the Holocaust. She well deserves her reputation as a Judas to the Jews of Berlin, the men, women and children whom she betrayed by the score to preserve her own life.
This book is basicly her story. Written by a former classmate.
It details much of her early life to the best of the author's knowledge. It then goes on to describe her career as a Griefer, one of the scores of Jews who openly chose to assist the Gestapo finding the Jews in hiding so to deport them to the death camps in exchange for their own survival.
A career in which Stella Goldschlag was one of the Gestapo's best.
One could compare her to the infamous Blond Irma Grese (who is not mentioned in this book) but Wyden shows her life was a far cry from nightmare that of the infamous Blond Beast's. She was not mistreated. Her mother spoiled her. Her father hardly interfered. She certainly had contact with better men in the beginning. A far cry from the horrors of Irma Grese's nightmare life that ultimately exploded with deadly fury upon the inmates of Auschwitz with all the savagery of a mistreated dog.
When one looks at the infamous Blond Poison and her Domestic Partner Rolf Isaacson one finds no reason to sympathise with them at all. They did what they did as a matter of choice. Wyden even reports the infamous Blond Poison enjoyed her work.
This is the story of one woman's choice in Evil.
Mr. Wyden finds the painful truth about a childhood friend........2000-09-07
I do not wish to hurt anyone who has suffered from the holocaust by writing this review, nor do I want dishonor anyone who was destroyed by it. I am only making an observation about what happened to this woman named Stella. Stella was a beautiful blonde girl who reached early maturity during WWII in Berlin. She was Jewish, but with her blue eyes she could easily pass for a gentile. When Hitler started his personal war against Jews, he initiated the most horrible and beastly experience that could happen to human beings. With his henchmen, and their vicious attacks on Jews and other peoples, he pushed people into emotional dungeons, and it is at these dark, these lowest levels, that we discover what we are really capable of doing. In his painful memoir of his experiences of the holocaust, Elie Weisel, shows us in Night, that when the Nazis tossed tiny bits of bread to starving Jews, many of them killed for that one morsel of food, sometimes ending the lives of their loved ones for a chance to put something in their mouths. For me, this book was about survival. No one knows what they are capable of unless they are taken to that horrifying nightmare place of doom, and unless one has been there, there is absolutely no way of knowing what our choices would be. Many would argue that Stella did not get to the extremes that occurred in the death camps. But we do know that she was beaten over and over and over again. And then she was offered a chance to have it all end by being a "catcher" for the Nazis. We know that other Jews committed suicide to avoid the beatings and the offer of becoming a catcher to stay alive. I can only thank God that I have never had to be in such a situation, because I don't know what I would do. How could I know? I do know that I have a very strong instinct to live, and I think that may have been why Stella took the path that she did. I believe, that in making that choice, she did lose her "soul." I think that is the only way that a human being could do what she did. For Stella did not only "catch" Jews for the Nazis, many eyewitnesses said she seemed to enjoy it. I think for anyone to make that "choice" you would have to put your entire being into it in order to perform those horrible crimes. In the end, I think Stella suffered far more than if she had allowed herself to die at the hands of the Nazis. At the age of about 21, she began the life of a person who is hated by virtually everyone she had ever known and anyone she would ever meet. She lives her life constantly attempting to convince herself that she didn't do anything wrong. She lives in total seclusion, with the lights always dim, year after year with no one to love her, no one to hold her, no one to console her. And still she survived into old age. Survival was Stella's strongest urge. It kept her alive to live a lifelong death, the death of her humanity, with the destruction of hundreds, perhaps thousands on her hands. Would I choose survival? In retrospect, had I been a "Stella," I can only pray that I would have had the ability to accept my death at the hands of the Nazis.
A gripping and unforgettable book.......1999-02-23
This book is well worth seeking out, even if it is out of print.
What makes it all the more fascinating is that the author grew up with the subject of the biography. The text seems meandering at first, but the interweaving of his story -- and that of Stella -- comes sharply into focus, as the writer shares his innermost thoughts.
Although he does not make Stella blameless, he does demonstrate empathy for her -- in the end, she lives but has lost her soul. She is an unforgetable character. Striking, too, are the many `supporting' characters Wyden introduces to us, brave and courageous Jews who survived in Berlin through much of the war and, in some cases, all of it. These individual stories are striking, heart-warming, sometimes funny, and always unforgetable. I found the book as engrossing as a fictional thriller, truly a `can't put down' item! Don't miss it!
A sickening but outstanding account.......1998-09-15
When I first read this book I was sickened that someone could do this to their own people. It also shows the weaknesses of the Nazis and their "ideal" person because many Jews fit the profile of the "perfect Aryan". In the end God works in wonderous and mysterious ways. Stella got what she deserved when her daughter was taken from her by the Jewish community of Berlin and raised as a Jew. It is a must read for those interested in World War II and the Holocaust.

Gripping story.......2005-03-14
The power of this book comes from the pity one feels for Stella, despite that she is guilty of a thousand betrayals of her fellow Jews.
She was an ordinary person caught in an extraordinary circumstance. Might any one of us have behaved better? The author seems to understand this perfectly.
I came away from this book with the feeling that Stella was as much a victim of Nazi Germany as any other Jew. It was Nazi Germany that created her; twisted her.
Very powerful book & highly recommended. For the other side of the coin, I also recommend "When Courage was Stronger Than Fear".
