A West Pointer's 1850-1860s recollections........1998-04-08

This interesting autobiographical account was written by a West Point graduate of the 1850s. His experiences in the pre-Civil War west are especially informative, as not many first-hand narratives of that era have been published. His assignment after graduation from the military academy was to the New Mexico territory. There, he participated in the short Navajo war, and with vivid descriptions, tells the story well. He was wounded during the conflict and after being sent home for convelescence, tells about the most difficult choice confronting those classmates of his from the southern states in their future direction. Although Averell didn't excel at his later military career, never the less his work with the pen makes for interesting reading.

Interestingly, I look at this issue in quite a different way. GM food is tested and has been shown to be safe. I try my best to search out GM products and avoid untested organic stuff!

DECIDE BEFORE YOU EAT IT !.......2006-02-04

Genetically engineered food has not been proven that causes obvious dangerous results.This is what the major food companies claim to be true and this is what they use as a strong argument for not labeling the products that contain genetically engineered ingredients. This book does what governments should have done around the world years now uncovers all the companies that use such ingredients after have been tested. Explains why the dangerous disinformation we get from the promoters of the gene foods can be dangerous not only for our health but for the future of humankind and goes even deeper analyzing the structure of this propaganda and how it works. At the end includes a list of companies with real organic foods and many sources like books lists catalogues web sites were you can find the informations you need to find what we should eat.
I must mention that i had really good time reading this book and specially the part that mentions the six myths that the companies use to present us the genetically engineered food as the panacea that is going to save the world. I doubt that your life is going to be the same after you will gather all these information.
P.S. it deserves five stars because it makes you feel much safer after you read it.

A Resourceful Book.......2005-01-09

This is a wonderful, resourceful book that captured my attention as I read all about genetically engineered food and the companies that deal with them.

I particularly liked the resources found in the back, ranging from the CSA's to listings of Organic Seed Companies. I also appreciated reading about the names of companies that do not produce genetically engineered food. Excellent!

As far as it goes, GENTICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS is an excellent book. My only complaint is that the research to date on this topic is pathetic. Of course this is exactly what Ronnie Cummings says. For whatever reason, the Clinton administration and the current administration don't seem to be overly concerned about what is happening to our food supply. The amazing thing is that most GMOs hit the market in the past 10 years. If you weren't paying attention in the 1990s, you need to know that you probably were not alone. The bottom line is that the food you are eating today is not what we ate as recently as 15 years ago.

We all heard about the Monarch butterflies and the bovine growth hormone, but most of us had no idea just how many organisms--plants and animals--had been altered and were now part of the food chain. Cummins book describes just what we missed and although he writes somewhat provocatively, much of what he has to say is being said by others. In fact, the Monsanto potato has been discussed in many books and articles. Fortunately, big businesses like McDonald's are beginning to pay attention.

Since the government can't or won't act, bringing about a difference will be up to the public. You can vote with your food dollars. Although you may not be ready to go completely organic (you really should for your health's sake) you can at least avoid the worst kinds of foods. The bottom line is that we really don't know what GMOs will do to the human body. I for one am not ready to be an experimental subject and I certainly don't want children to become subjects either. Read this book and act.

A Book that Needed to be Written.......2000-11-11

I knew instinctively that I was against GE foods, and absolutely in favor of mandatory labeling of GE foods, but I did not know the actual facts behind the argument against GE foods. This book lays out those facts clearly. The authors make no attempt to hide the fact that they are against GE foods, but they do not let their bias get in the way of their reporting of the facts. There's no ranting and raving or kook-talk going on here. True, there are not enough facts to go around on this issue, but what few *independent* studies have been done have produced alarming results. The book also does an excellent job of illustrating how so many other countries around the world have absolutely rejected GE foods. The costs paid by the American farmer are also discussed. And there is a ton of consumer-related info. If you eat food, you need this book.

I love hot food! Marry the intensity of heat with flavor and you have a winning meal at my table. What I enjoy about this book is the diversity of dishes from appetizers through entree's and desserts to drinks that give you a wide vareity of hot and spicy choices. The author, Jane Butel, entices the reader with "I gotta make this titles" like Bitchy Beef Bourguignonne, Dante's Downfall, Tracy's White Trash and Hot to Trot Tarts. All recipes are very readable and easy to make. If you are a seasoned HEAT eater or seeking adventurous cooking, then grab Hotter Than Hell and spice up your culinary life.

A terrific cookbook that I have used since 1987. Wonderful dishes. One of the best queso recipes I have ever run across. I have no idea why "A reader" wrote what he or she did since my experience has been the opposite. Jane Butel's directions are clear and very easy to follow and the tastes are authentic. The mole poblano (listed as Turkey Mole) instantly took me back to Old Mexico where I fell in love with the sauce. I have never written a review before and have not felt compelled to do so until now. Jane, if you read this, thanks for all the great dishes!

Tasty, Different, and Easy to Prepare.......2001-03-21

I purchased my "Hotter than Hell" cookbook in 1987 and have since that time, purchased several others for friends who have tasted the recipes I prepared from the book. I have had requests that I prepare "Double Cilantro Roast Pork" when I have invited someone for dinner after having served it to them previously. The ingredients for recipes in the book are: onions, potatoes, garlic, olive oil, different vegetables, cheese, etc. The different peppers, herbs and meat are the only things that someone might have to make a trip to the grocery for. I can't imagine what the "reader from Texas" uses to cook with if she feels the ingredients are "exotic." For anyone who enjoys cooking and trying new recipes, I recommend this cookbook. I am purchasing three(3) today for gifts by request.

Brenda Nixon draws on her experiences as an educator and mom to provide parents with helpful advice on a variety of topics. As a busy mother of a toddler and an eight year-old, I want answers but don't have the time to search everywhere for them. Parenting Power in the Early Years gave me thoughtful advice on many of the situations that concern me, and I appreciated the fact that it was an easy read. It was personal, practical, and powerful.

I wish I'd had this 95 page book when my kids were in the early years. Instead I had several thick books full of clinical studies and terms that boggled my already deteriorating confidence as a parent.

She's got all the stuff you need to know in these few easy to read pages. And if you still want more on a specific topic, she includes five pages of Parent Resources.

What amazing advice Brenda Dixon pushed into 96 pages of her parenting book.

With winter and flu season--and unfortunately, ill children, I've had a lot of at-home downtime to read her book. But it is also designed so you could pick it up and read a little to learn about how to handle your immediate concern.

From the moment of "I'm scared out of my mind" when you arrive home with that first newborn, to the day they start kindergarten, Dixon has sound advice--advice I felt I could trust.

Her goal is to have parents realize that you are your child's best and most influential teacher, and that parenting guidelines you use in these early ages are the foundation for all future parenting.

The most common concerns most of us parents have are covered: thumb-sucking, temper tantrums, clinginess, separation anxiety,toilet training, and she also discusses spanking.

I wish someone had given me this book earlier as it might have saved some unnecessary worry and doubt at my parenting skills.
