Captain Penfield's Civil War Diary 1863-1865. First Edition published by Penfield Foundation. This is number 240 of 500 numbered editions, measures 9" x 6" and is 285 pages. Captain Penfield was the cousin of breveted Brigadier General John Hammond, also of the 5th NY Cavalry. Penfield offers several first hand accounts of encounters with Mosby. Example: Saturday, May 30, 1863, Train fired into by Mosby guerrilla's-track torn up and cars burned-5 NY & 1st Vt go in pursuit about 10 mile & after a running fight-charge on the Gun & take it. Lt. Barker & 5 men wounded. Corpl S. Orlando Drake Co. H killed-Murphy Co. B killed. Captain Haskins of the reb (an Englishman mortally wounded by ___________. Lt Barker horse badly wounded & one horse killed-Co. H. Penfield was captured at Hagarstown MD on July 6, 1863 after having fought at Gettysburg and spent the remainder of the war in southern prisons including Libby, Macon and Charleston. More than 500 different soldiers are mentioned, as Captain Penfield made note of most everyone he met while in prison, and most of them have been identified. The 5th NY served with the 1st VT Cavalry and the 18th PA Cavalry

Helen's sub-title "The Most Comprehensive..." is spot on. It's very comprehensive and is by far one of the most useful handbooks I've read. And the inclusion "with All Aspects..." is also spot on. This books covers things you never really would think of or associate with in coping with the death of a loved one or just a death until you've been there and even then, there are things that I never thought about until I read this handbook that I'm grateful Helen wrote about so that I felt more comfortable and confident in dealing with those aspects.

Losing someone you love or someone whose life or death had a profound impact on your life often leaves you stunned. Frankly, the words meant to comfort given by friends and family only add insult to injury even though they're all well-meaning. It's my hope that for anyone who does know of someone coping with a loss, that instead of words, you present this book.

It's like an encyclopedia. You can flip through and read bits and pieces as you need. It's not intended to be read front to cover and most will never read every page as there are bound to be portions that won't apply. But Helen has covered a large area that death does touch upon and does so in a way that offers immediate help and provides you with more resources to help too. I really liked that there's an equal balance between providing information --a general acknowledgement and understanding being offered-- and resources. The book is helpful on its own merits, a really great tool when utilizing the references and other suggestions beyond the book, too.

Acknowledgements [...] puts this book into many of their sympathy gift baskets (which is where I first got mine) along with a nice selection of other helpful, soothing gifts. Check them out, too. The gifts are beautiful and meaningful as is Helen Fitzgeralds handbook.

a good resource.......2002-01-23

I found this book after losing my father a few weeks ago. I have found it to be a helpful resource and a comfort. The author uses simple language and short sections. The sections are divided so that a person can easily find the topic most needed without reading the enitre book. Highly recommended.

A tremendous comfort for those grieving.......2000-09-29

"The Mourning Handbook" is excellent and it hits the nail on the head when it comes to the pain of grief! This book has brought me a lot of comfort and relief as I dealt with the unexpected deaths of several loved ones in my life. This book also helped to not be so hard on myself as I went through my grieving process. This book is very educational in explaining many aspects of bereavement. It also talks a lot about what to expect when you are grieving, how to survive, how to cope, and also how to help other people who have lost loved ones. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has lost a loved one.

Think you're going crazy? This book will allay your fears........1998-07-02

I first bought this book for a British friend in Italy who thought she was going crazy because she was still subject to bouts of crying two months after her Mother's death. The book helped her tremendously. I bought my own copy when my Father died and found it as helpful as it appeared to be before death touched me personally.

I could go on for more than the maximum 1,000 words and still not finish describing this book. Suffice to say that its greatest strength is that it is totally non-judgmental. There are no "shoulds," no timetables, only the constant theme that the rollercoaster of emotions that is ruling your life right now is probably perfectly normal and temporary. Ms. Fitzgerald does offer benign guidelines to help the reader decide when things might be getting out of hand and require professional help, but with no pressure.

The book covers every eventuality for every type of death. The style is clear, the information easily found, the approach completely objective.

I received this book as a gift, and plan to purchase copies
to give as well.

Each page or two tells of a dog who touched a service man's
heart, of the impact they had on their life.

I loved that at the beginning of each story is a photo of the
dog, sometimes with the person telling their story.

Just wonderful ... absolutely heartwarming.

Excellent tributes to the forgotten heroes of public safety and the armed forces. Those heroes are the furry,four legged kind--dogs and horses. Lulu tells the stories in the officers own words, or words from newpaper articles, telling of the pain of the loss of their partner.These four footed heroes will lay down their lives for their handlers, and are, Heroes All Without Question. Be sure to have a hankie or kleenex out when you read this book. Some tributes are so moving.

This is a delightful book. As you read you come to realize even more how beautiful each & every flower is in your garden and how beautiful they can be preserved. If you are looking for a book with lots of photographs of pressed flower projects, and lots of "how to" information, this is NOT the book for you. The book begins like a novel (it's a narrative by the author about her enjoyment and experiences collecting and pressing flowers) and the ends as a journal.

The writer, Louise Kollenbaum, takes the reader by the hand and guides one into the garden, the meadow, down the little path to the woods, and as she leasurely walks , she gathers her flowers like her chapters, points out the beauty of a petal, the shape of a leaf, makes you notice, pauses while you gaze at one of her amazing compositions, tells you what is easy, what is hard at first, explains in simple, patient words how you do it, and reveals the secrets of the craft. While you marvel at the endless creative possibilities, wondering how your guide found the way, she tells her own story of gathering and pressing flowers in an artist's way, and shares her discoveries, failures, adventures with humour and humble wisdom. In the same leasurely pace she walks you into the history of flower pressing with its high bloom in the Victorian age and its romantic mysteries of flower symbolism which allowed lovers to exchange secret messages without words. In the writer's inviting language, it all sounds easy and enchanting at the same time, like an irresistable pleasure. In the end she hands you her book and says, "Now it's your turn." You find much more in SOUVENIRS DE FLEURS than chapters on the technique (the equipment, the gathering, pressing, storing, and the mounting of flowers) and on "Flower Projects" or creative ideas for making use of your collection. This is a rather different book on the Holocaust.It is the summaries of the interviews carried out with 50 people who survived the Holocaust.These interviews were done in the mid 90's with survivors who are in their senior years;many who were born over 80 years ago.Several of the people were the sole survivor of a large family.Included are excellent portraits of all these people.It is obvious that they have heavy hearts when remembering the terrible injustices they experienced.
