Book Description
The outstanding Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevskya lived and worked in the second half of the 19th century. Her talents were outstanding. She lived in a century when Russia was making great strides in many branches of knowledge: the brilliant chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev put forward his periodical system of elements, the basis of modern chemistry; Ivan Sechenov became famous for his research in physiology and the cerebral reflexes, while Alexander Stoletov laid the foundations of electronics.
Russian mathematics also achieved great successes. At the turn of the 19th century the celebrated Lobachevsky originated a new geometry; Ostrogardsky and Bunyakovsky made valuable contributions to mathematical science; Academician Pafnuty Chebyshev was known the world over.
Sophia Kovalevskaya ranks on a level with these scholars.

Book Description
very woman who's had a baby knows how difficult it is to take off the extra weight, despite those unrealistic articles promising that you'll be back into your pre-pregnancy clothes within six weeks. Postpartum dieting can actually add weight and slow down the metabolism, making it virtually impossible to shed those stubborn pounds. Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell-After Pregnancy shows women why it's so difficult to lose the weight quickly, and why, if women don't adopt a sensible eating and exercise plan (as opposed to crash dieting), they will probably never take off the extra pounds. Whether you had a baby five days ago, or five years ago, bestselling author Debra Waterhouse shows women how to shed those hard-to-budge post-partum pounds, sensibly and healthfully.
Customer Reviews:
Depressing and discouraging!.......2007-04-27
I hated this book! I found the author's cutesy vocabulary and lighthearted "oh well" attitude in response to quite possibly never getting my body back to be nothing less than infuriating. Her description of waving a little white flag to 30 billion fat cells, and how they "protect their precious goldmine of fat" oblivious to months of exercise, and increasingly more stubborn with dieting, is obnoxious as it is frustrating.
I felt that she was telling me certain goals are hopeless and that the only way to cope was to throw away my old clothes.
I know that isn't true because (it was a tight fit), but I wore them home from the hospital! And I know I can improve from there.
Don't listen to her! You can do it!
I found that "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" was much more liberating, and will help me prepare for life and possible pregnancies down the road.
Awesome Book!.......2006-08-26
This book is perfect for the mother that wants to lose weight the HEALTHY way. No gimicky diets. Debra Waterhouse really helps you accept your post-pregnancy body and love it for the healthy baby it produced. She doesn't just focus on losing the weight, but regaining a new appreciation for your body and your self. The author doesn't make you feel guilty or build up unrealistic goals. I just had my son 3 months ago and picked up this book for a healthy way to lose the baby fat. After reading it and starting on Debra's PEACE plan, I have a new love of my body and am beginning to have a healthy relationship with food.
Very Informitive.......2005-09-19
This book was very informitive and helpful in understanding what the average woman's body goes through after pregnancy. I was surprised that it takes so long to get back into shape after giving birth and according to this book there is no getting into shape a few months after. Its a waiting game - which I guess is a little disappointing but the truth helps.
The most useful book I read about pregnancy weight loss.......2005-06-26
I lost 40 lbs of pregnancy weight in 3 months after my baby was born. I was nervous about my weight gain for this pregnancy (why is everyone else just gaining 25 or 30?) and was ready to accept that "you add 10 lbs for each baby" mentality. I'm the type of person that gains weight easily if I don't watch what I eat, and had never lost the extra weight I gained thru dieting alone. I was very thankful for this book. First and foremost it gave me confidence about myself. It's OK to be fat after giving birth!!! It's such a simple common sense but when you're flying high on hormone and busy with a newborn, it's hard to see yourself in the mirror and still look 6 months pregnant. The 2nd most helpful part is DON'T even think about dieting or exercising in the first 6 weeks post partum. Some women rush into things but the book emphasizes recovering well from childbirth. I completely agree with it. And I patiently waited 7 weeks before I started to exercise, even after that I didn't overdo it. About 20 min a day, 3 days a week. I didn't go on any special diet. I followed normal portions for myself and eat healthy (again, this is just common sense but I would've be desperately try all sorts of crazy dieting fads to lose these 40 lbs if i hadn't read this book).
I wont' lie, I still hated to see my body in the mirror for the first 2 months, but with the explanation from this book about fat cells, and the self esteem I gained, I had a very good recovery, no post partum depression or baby blues even though I was up 20 hours a day. I want every pregnant woman to read it before childbirth (after childbirth you'll have no time, trust me). It gets rid of a lot of myth, and will get you on the right path to losing weight in a healthy way.
worked for me!.......2005-06-05
After the birth of my 3rd child, I was concerned about losing the extra 25 pounds I had gained. This book really changed my life in that it gave great tips and information that I didn't find anywhere else - about food journals, duration of exercise, and when to start trying to lose the weight. All her information was right on, and when I followed her suggestions, the pounds melted off so quickly that everyone around me was amazed. Don't get me wrong, it took a lot of hard work, but after reading this book, I realized that if I worked hard for 2 or 3 months, starting at 3 months postpartum, that I would see the results I wanted. After 2 months of hard work, the 25 pounds were long gone, and I felt really great about my accomplishments.
Book Description
Interest in the cuisines of Eastern Asia has never been greater. What better time for a new edition of this classic Korean cookbook, complete with a fresh new design ?throughout and a beautiful new cover? With its intriguing flavors and generous spice, Korean cuisine is one of the most exciting Asian cuisines and, featuring leafy greens, grains, and an abundance of seafood, one of the most healthful as well. The Korean Kitchen includes more than 140 tantalizing, easy-to-follow recipes for soups, salads, fritters, pancakes, fish and shellfish, barbecue, noodles, and, of course, the Korean national favorite: pickled vegetables, or kimchi. Complete with a history of the cuisine, a glossary, and tips on serving a traditional meal, The Korean Kitchen leads the way to homemade Korean fare.

McDonald's?.......2007-10-01
I shy away from cookbooks written by non-native authors in general, but I do give them a chance. And whereas this cookbook is slightly more comprehensive than most Korean cookbooks, there are no pictures and without them one is left to one's own devices when it comes to food presentation.
Another concern: the author admits in his preface that during his trips to Korea, he'd "take breaks" from the cuisine by visiting McDonald's to "sooth his tongue." If the author doesn't enjoy the cuisine he's reviewing/compiling, perhaps the McDonald's Corporation might be willing to subsidize his next project?
I re-sold my copy.
Good supliment cookbook........2007-04-22
I bought this book to supliment the Dok Suni cookbook after I had been using it for more then a year. There is a lot of options and variety in this book with background information on where and when he found each dish. There isn't really any pictures (as has been mentioned) but if you already know the basics of Korean cooking this is a great book to add to your library. I would rate it just behind Dok Suni for Korean cookbooks and the two are the only Korean cookbooks I have tried I would recommend to others.
Not THE choice for those new to Korean food.......2004-03-18
My mother was Korean and I ate her cooking and that of her friends all my life. I've eaten at a number of different Korean restaurants. No one cooks dishes exactly the same, so don't be surprised if you've eaten Korean food & when you make the recipes in this book, they don't taste exactly like what you've had before. There's an exhaustive supply of tasty, easy-to-follow recipes here; however, one thing you won't get in this book is illustration--there is not one picture or photo in it. If you're a person who likes to know what a dish is supposed to look like when it's cooked, and you're NOT familiar with Korean food, get this book as your backup, not your primer. Note--There is a metric conversion chart in back for those who don't use US measurements. Here's a tip: There are number of sites online that have fantastic recipes and pictures. Do a Google search for "Korean recipes." The pictures you find on some of the sites will give you an idea of what your dish should look like and will leave your mouth watering.
Misses the mark..........2004-02-21
If you follow the measurements, your dishes won't taste like traditional korean food found in restaurants. Korean cooking is all about the little details, which the author appears to have left out. He appears to be only vaguely familiar with the intricacies of Korean cusine. This is not a book you'll refer to over and over. I would try one of the Korean authors cookbook if you want something real.
First time or experienced, this is a great basic!.......2002-06-30
Unlike the western cooking, most cultural recipes aren't exact. You can't say a teaspoon here or a 1/3 cup there. Great food comes from experience and well, one shoots from the hip.
That being said, I must say how much I love this book. I am a Korean myself, ate Korean food most of my life, but never learned how to cook it. Sure, I regret it, but I seem to have a definite flare with western cuisine more than eastern. Or so I told myself.
On my mother's birthday, I decided to try my hand on cooking Korean for the first time. You can say fear was in the eyes of my family and could see them biting their tongue. My husband purchased this book for me a while back, and though I've cracked it open, I've never cooked anything from it. This was my chance and I seized the opportunity. After sitting on the bookshelf for two years, its moment finally came.
I made the bul-go-gie and the chicken casserole (duk-chim). By intuition, I substituted the regular sugar for light brown sugar. (It came out a bit darker but the molasses in the sugar gave it a depth that white sugar would not have given.) Also, a note - it is very important to get the best beef you can from your butcher when making this dish. If you get bad beef, you'll essentially get a bad dish. Anyhow, it came out perfectly and tasty too! The chicken casserole (I cooked it in an oval dutch oven - enamel cast iron from Le Creuset) under low heat and the meat literally fell off the bone and melted in my mouth!!
The final test came when my family ate my creations. Their eyes opened wide and everyone was very impressed that I actually cooked this without help from them! I got wonderful compliments and I knew this book was a total reference guide that shouldn't be shoved in the back of the bookshelf!
It's important to use the best ingredients possible. Having the right equipment is very important too. But the most important thing is to learn to understand which intensity you'd like to enhance and which to tone down as you flavor the foods. No book can teach you what's EXACTLY right in your mouth. Only you can decipher the complexities of that. Use this book as a guide and you'll enjoy a very successful time cooking Korean food.
p.s. My best friend isn't Korean (though I swear her inner child is) and she's been cooking out of this book from cover to cover and has nothing but praises for it!

Customer Reviews:
This is a must read for campfire entertainment.......2001-07-02
We kept reading this book looking for how to have fun on a camp trip, and before long we were laughing at the content that we realized we were having fun. While this book offered little practical advice about having fun with kids during camping, reading the book aloud with your children certainly provided comic relief. Very entertaining book, but we're sure the author meant well.
a lifesaver.......2000-05-17
I am a mom of 3 children, ages 8, 4, and 7 months. When my husband purchased a camper for our family, I was full of questions. "How can we go camping with 3 kids and have a great time?" I'm so glad I found the book "A Guide to Happy Family Camping." This book was a lifesaver. It answered all my questions. And gave me valuable advice on planning, food and play. This book also has great resource information on -planning, packing, and preparing -magazines, catalogs, and great web sites - lists of parks with addresses and phone numbers. Thanks to this book our first camping trip was a great success. This book is a must not just for inexperienced campers but for all camping families
Customer Reviews:
the basics.......2005-07-27
A good basic starting point, especially for first time campers. The inclusion of a flashlight and whistle with the book is a great idea, as we train to carry a whistle and light in their pocket 24 hours a day in the woods. The book starts with the most essential information of all, what gear do I need to buy and what do I pack. It covers the selection of how to dress, food preparation, hiking safety, wild animals, and other solid information. Good safety stuff here, camping can get dangerous after all.
Customer Reviews:
Well researched, written, and a work of art!.......2002-09-10
Mahonri Young's artist style is so captivating and his life fascinating. Interest in this book was initially to collect Sharp family history and to have a definitive ovewview of the life of Mahonri. It was with added pleasure to discover a book so well written, so well researched, and so graphically beautiful. What a treat! A perfect book for every serious collector.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic detailed presentation but unflowing.......2003-09-15
I have read a decent amount of literature related to the Holocaust. Each book has been difficult, in its own right, to finish. However, an observation I realized with this particular book was that it is, in one word, choppy. The book was written by three different survivors of the Holocaust. Each of their stories well deserves to be read. However, the way it was formulated into this book makes it not flow. Each chapter has a different style of writing to it, since it was written by one of the three authors. Hence, that aspect made this book more difficult to get through. Once I got used to one man's style of writing, the next chapter was someone else's. I am not saying this is a bad book. On the contrare: what was written deserves to be read. However, this is not one book that you can just easily read to pass time. It needs to be sat down with and read carefully.
Not an uplifting read.......2001-03-20
This book voices a strong opinion that I disagree with completely. It seems to exclaim that good cannot survive where evil is so overwhelming. There were, according to these survivors, no heroes at Auschwitz; those who did not die became "totally familiar with the inexplicable and the abnormal" and "learned to live on intimate terms with the crematoria." This book is not for those who choose to see survival in Auschwitz as a triumph of the human spirit. Anyone who claims that there were no heros of this tragedy has not read "Facing the Lion: Memoirs of a Young Girl in Nazi Germany", in my opinion a much better written book and FAR more uplifting.
A Guided Tour of "Hell" by Three of Its Survivors.......2000-11-19
The reviewers of this book have done a masterful job. However, the paragraph on p.141 beginning, "We work beneath the earth and above it, under a roof and in the rain, with spade, the pickaxe and the crowbar." ... and ending with "Antiquity--the conspiracy of free men against slaves!" deserves reading and rereading, after which the next six paragraphs should be read slowly and thoughtfully.
The worst book I've ever read, yet I couldn't put it down........2000-07-23
I say worst not because it was poorly written or translated but because the descriptions of the events and the people are *almost* too horrible to believe. At times I was too sickened to continue reading but I desired to know how they survived the sights, the smells, the screams, the smoke. When I finished the book, I found inspiration-- if anyone could survive Auschwitz, then the small trivial problems that we sometimes let control our lives can be overcome. The book, unfortunately, ends abruptly as if the authors in recounting these horrible memories could stand them no more. I would have liked to have read about their liberation and their lives after the war, but I thank them for having the courage and the strength to give us their account of this inhuman history.
Essential addition to anyone interested in Holocaust Studies.......2000-07-09
Survivors did not triumph, they were just lucky or resourceful... Since there is no description at this time for this book, let me add one. In 1945, three Polish survivors of Auschwitz (non-Jewish political prisoners) wrote their memories. These are graphic, unsparing memories that are fresh, since they were written right after liberation. They honestly discuss the inhumane, unspeakable conditions of starvation and daily deaths, and even murders among prisoners (kapos). This is the first time this book has ever been translated into English. in 1951, Tadeusz Borowski (#119198) previously authored a collection of memories in "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentleman". He then committed suicide. This is an essential addition to anyone interested in Holocaust studies, but be warned that it is devastating. By the way, Janusz Nel Siedlecki was Number 6643, and Krystyn Olszewski was Number 7587.
