Is lack of time your excuse for not using soyfoods to prepare healthy food? Preparing delicious, healthy food using soy is easier than you think. Author of the 15-Minute Gourmet series, Paulette Mitchell has become accustomed to efficiency in the kitchen. In The Complete Soy Cookbook, she continues the quick but healthy trend in cooking using soy. As she notes, "the recipes rely on the imaginative use of ingredients rather than elaborate techniques."
Mitchell includes a description of soyfoods and the facts regarding soybeans as they relate to many of today's primary health concerns. Learn how to make soy part of your healthful lifestyle using a variety of ingredients, including different types of tofu, tempeh, and soybeans (dry, canned, and fresh). The Complete Soy Cookbook provides recipes suited to every occasion, from quick weekday meals to elegant entertaining. The style is best described as fusion cooking: Mitchell blends elements of many diverse cuisines in her book.
"This culinary chameleon truly is one of the most versatile foods on earth," Mitchell writes, and it's evident in recipes such as curried sweet Potato Soup, Tofu-Mushroom Stroganoff, Tempeh Paella, Tofu Tiramisu, Soybean Bourguignonne, and Tempeh Strips and Broccoli with Ancho Chili Sauce. "I became determined to take a gourmet approach and turn meatless mealtime into vegetarian dining," notes Mitchell. All of the 150 simple yet flavorful recipes are vegetarian, most are also dairy-free, and a nutritional analysis is included with each. --Gretel Hakanson

Soy is rich in protein, is a good source of and calcium, contains no cholesterol or saturated fat, and contains plant estrogens, which have been shown to be powerful cancer-fighting agents and are effective in lowering cholesterol and relieving symptoms of menopause. Mitchell reports the latest health discoveries so that readers understand the whys of cooking soy in addition to the hows. Her hows section offers advice on buying, storing, and using the myriad soy products available. In addition to promoting health, soys neutral flavor goes well with any almost seasonings. These are not the brown rice-and-Birkenstock tofu recipes of yore; rather, they appeal to a broader and more sophisticated market that includes meat eaters who want to eat soy for health, vegetarians new and old, and people who want their food to be delicious and easy to prepare. They are suited to every occasion from quick weekday meals to elegant entertaining fare. Love It.......2006-08-08
This book has such a nice variety of soy and tofu recipes. I am so glad I purchased it. If you're looking for a good variety of recipes... this book is one of the best!
Hmmmmm.......2002-12-26
I love this cookbook! This book has so many creative and interesting recipes that I think one would never get bored with it. I especially like that the nutritional information is provided for each recipe. For those of you who aren't thrilled about soy, this book has a lot of good ways to help integrate it into your diet. Try it out - I am sure that you will like it!
One of the best soyfoods cookbooks I've seen.......2000-04-15
I was surprised to see that no one had written a review on this book. I have more than a dozen cookbooks devoted to soy products and this is one of the most impressive. The Author provides ample information about the benefits of soy, but in a very conversational manner. The directions are very simple and straightforward. Many cookbooks I've seen appear to be written by and for a culinary professional, but this one is aimed at home cooks with limited resources. There are some "exotic" ingredients, but most of them are common to your grocery store. Many recipes are low in fat. There are no pictures, but there are none needed. The recipes layouts are very easy to follow and the colors are pleasant to the eyes. Those who cannot see well may be deterred by the medium sized text. Most recipes are vegan. None contain any kind of meat, making this an excellent resourse for vegetarians. There are 170 recipes with many optional variations. Overall, I highly recommend this book. Some recipes are: fresh pea soup; creamy tomato soup; tempeh-fruit salad; Greek tofu salad;tofu curry; tofu-mushroom marsala; tempeh with black bean sauce;vegetable tartlets with herbed tomato sauce as well as lasagnes, puddings, pies, and several recipes calling for fresh, green soybeans (which grow easily at home if you're a gardener) Please look into this book.

Here's a knitting book with a difference. It shows and tells how to leave patterns aside and make beautiful clothing and accessories from simple geometric shapes. Following the modularor no-patternmethod, knitters can forget about complicated increases and decreases, and they won't have to labor over an intricate pattern book. Instead, they learn how to create sweaters, bags, hats, cushions, socks, scarves, and ponchos using just a few easy-to-learn stitches. Step-by-step color photos instruct on knitting geometric shapes, then on joining them together to create stylish garments. Each stage of the no-pattern process is explained and supplemented with advice on measuring and calculating yarn requirements, as well as on creative ways to mix and match colors and shapes. The authors present ten easy-to-follow projects for making items knitters will be proud to wear or give as gifts. Also featured are suggested variations on each project plus advice on how needlecrafters can create their own unique designs. No-Pattern Knits is a how-to volume that belongs on every knitter's bookshelf. Approximately 250 color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Mathematical Connection!.......2007-04-09
Not many patterns for finished objects but a good book to get down some basic shapes and encouragement to explore knitting geometry. Very clear!
No Pattern Knits.......2007-01-19
This book is great for someone interested in learning the modular technique of knitting. Basicly, it is making geometric shapes and putting them together artfully to make fashion etc... This book teaches you the technique, and has great ideas and illustrations. You can make anything from a sleeve for a garment to a unique and adorable baby hat. You can be an experienced knitter, or a newbie. Sometimes traditional knitting patterns can be strict and limiting. This modular style, lets you take simple skills and go forth and design on your own. Great from cover to cover!!
I highly recomend this book as an introduction to modular knitting. I have looked at others, and this is the one I would reccomend to buy first.
May offer a simple formula for success, but its polished results look quite advanced and professional........2006-10-15
NO-PATTERN KNITS: SIMPLE MODULAR TECHNIQUES FOR MAKING WONDERFUL GARMENTS AND ACCESSORIES may offer a simple formula for success, but its polished results look quite advanced and professional. As the knitter moves away from using patterns and turns to geometric shapes instead, the no-pattern method evolves some lovely complex pieces produced using surprisingly few easy stitches. Add full color step-by-step photos and you have a winner.

Disappointing .......2006-07-09
If you are familiar with modular knitting, this book offers nothing new. The patterns didn't appeal to me at all; there was no snap to the designs. If you aren't familiar with modular knitting, there are better books from which to learn.
Highly recommended for beginners wanting to try Modular!.......2006-07-01
I've been scoping out modular technique knitting books for awhile and finally decided on one to try: No-Pattern Knits by Pat Ashforth & Steve Plummer. As a beginning knitter, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the detailed instructions on the different ways to create large knitted items from smaller knitted shapes. The book has many great varied projects to try, but it's especially the step-by-step instructions on how to choose, measure, knit and assemble the modular shapes that make this book a worthwhile investment and genuine inspiration, especially for a beginner. The only minor complaint I have is that all the instructions are given for garter stitch only -- but I think, with practice, the principles can be applied to other simple stitches to accomplish the same effects, which I am very much looking forward to trying.

Book Description
At eight years old, Bettina Aptheker watched her family's politics play out in countless living rooms across the country when her father, historian and U.S. Communist Party leader Herbert Aptheker, testified on television in front of the House on Un-American Activities Committee in 1953. Born into one of the most influential U.S. Communist families whose friends included W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Bettina lived her parents' politics witnessing first-hand one of the most dramatic upheavals in American history. She also lived with a terrible secret: incest at the hands of her famous father and a frightening and lonely life lived inside a home wrought with family tensions.
A gripping and beautifully rendered memoir, Intimate Politics is at its core the story of one woman's struggle to still the demons of her personal world while becoming a controversial public figure herself. This is the story of childhood sexual abuse, abortion, sexual violence, activism, and the triumph over one's past. It's about FBI harassment and persecution, Jewish heritage, and lesbian identity. It is, finally, about the courage to speak one's truth despite the consequences and to break the sacred silence of family secrets.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional.......2007-07-07
Like many others involved in the struggles of the Sixties and thereafter, I was aware of Bettina Aptheker: plaintiff in the famous lawsuit that finally validated the legality of the CPUSA; "red diaper baby" of the famous Herbert Aptheker; and participant in many organizations and campaigns. Also like many others, I had no idea at all about the interior person, the feeling individual who was Bettina Aptheker. The revelations of this book were a bit of a shock to me, though not so much as once they might have been, largely due to the feminist movement's success in raising consciousness about the too-common dysfunction of American families.
What makes this book powerful is the way in which the author weaves her personal experience, the dimension of feeling, in with events of the time and all in the context of relationships both comradely and familial. It seems almost a cliche to say it took great courage for her to live life as she did--shattering the conventions that bound her from sexual awareness and recognition of the crimes committed against her by her famous father. Add to this the tension and very real danger implicit in being a high-profile, public Communist in the US, and we can see her as a very strong person indeed.
This book is a gift to those who may be stunted by any form of "correct" conformism, especially that generated within traditional patriarchal families. It is also of value to those who cared about the efforts against war and racism...and who still care about these issues. Finally, it is a gift to see how she and her beloved partner have distilled the essential values of their lives into a spiritual practice. Thus, Ms. Aptheker completes a familiar circle from personal anguish to struggle for social justice to personal transformation. For those who consciously walk this circle, Intimate Politics will be a deepening and worthwhile book to read.
Bettina's writing is beautiful, educational and poignant........2007-05-12
Her weaving of personal narrative and political context makes this book a must read for feminists of all genres and anyone interested in learning more about the real lives of activists, women and daughters. Making real the complexity of family, relationships and love is a journey for the rest of us too.
A Moving Memoir.......2007-01-08
I was one of Bettina's students when she taught at SJSU thirty years ago. Her classes were always packed. She is an amazing lecturer and scholar. She had a tremendous impact on all of her young students.
Even thirty years later, I am impressed by her will, determination, and her sense of self. I read an excerpt of this book published in a local news magazine, but even before I read the excerpt I knew I would buy her book.
Most individuals at some point in their lives reflect on their childhood and how it formed who they are today. Bettina's book does this and more...she examines why she makes the choices she did in a manner that is honest. She does not go for the "easy out", but then she never did.
Her lessons and her ability to bear witness to her own life can easily be internalized and applied to your own experiences. You don't have to agree with her politics...you just have to recognize her unique humanity and in doing that you will grow yourself.
Public defiance, Private pain .......2006-11-21
There are two distinct and fascinating stories interwoven here.
Ms. Aptheker was part of the inner circle wherever boomers spontaneously manned the barricades for social change. She gives us a meticulous (perhaps too meticulous) first-hand account of the people she knew and the events she lived during the free-speech, civil rights, anti-war, and feminist revolutions. Hence, the word 'politics' in the title.
Then she tells another, much more interesting story. The 'intimate' passages introduce us to a very, very bright, traumatized young girl, one who is eager to please and desperate to fit in. So she steps out bravely -- her courage is astounding (especially her courage to change course in pursuit of integrity)-- but every bold action she takes also exposes her to very real dangers from the powers-that-be. A more sensible person might have withdrawn and conformed, but Ms. Aptheker staggers defiantly on. This is a story about secrets, injuries, shame, stubbornness, self-destruction, self-discovery, healing, and the courage to keep following your star, despite it all.
some important history.......2006-11-11
Bettina reviews a very important period; her growth, both personal and political, make for fascinating reading. I know her, and many of the persons and events in the book, and her "take" on them is very insightful. Events in her family, which took/take up so much of the reviewers time, are treated, I think, with respect and love, and don't detract from what is a wonderful story. Bravo to her.
Book Description
How I Grew explores the young adulthood of Mary
McCarthy, one of the most outspoken and prominent
intellectuals of the twentieth century. Focusing on eight formative
years of her life—from high school in the Seattle area
through college at Vassar—McCarthy reveals a girl by turns
vulnerable, independent, dramatic, lonely, inquisitive,
romantic, demonstrably bright, and uncommonly daring.
In candid, often intimate detail, How I Grew recounts
McCarthy’s early attempts at writing; her relationships with
teachers, family, and friends; a melodramatic flirtation with
suicide; and experiences as dissimilar as her first job and her
first seduction.
A natural companion to the much-praised Memories of a
Catholic Girlhood, this is a remarkable personal chronicle, an
utterly convincing self-portrait, and a superb addition to the
art of the autobiography.
Customer Reviews:
Read Memories of a Catholic Girlhood instead.......2005-06-23
I love most of Mary McCarthy, but in my opinion, this is her weakest book. It covers basically the same territory as Memories of a Catholic Girlhood, which she wrote in the 1950s. Here, however, there's little trace of her signature, tightly-wrought style. Instead, the style is baggy, with convoluted sentences, chatty asides, digressions within digressions, and endless lists of books she read, names of friends, etc. As a result, I often lost track of the basic story - which, after all, was the exact same story she had already told in Memories of a Catholic Girlhood. I'm rather confused as to why McCarthy wrote this book at all. Given that she had already written a detailed memoir of her formative years, why not just skip ahead to the mid-1930s, the subject of her unfinished "Intellectual Memoirs"?
Portrait of an Amazing Woman as a Young Girl.......2001-08-16
Each time I reread "How I Grew" I enjoy it more. Mary McCarthy paints a picture of herself coming of age intellectually , alongside engaging and often hilarious descriptions of the people she meets in these formative years between age 13 and 21, the town she grows up in (Seattle), and her early experiences at Vassar. What I love most is her chronicle of the most important and influential books and teachers in her life at this time, and how they shaped and sharpened her already apparent keen intelligence. Witty, self-deprecating, acid-tongued, insightful, and admittedly selective in her memories, in this book Mary McCarthy gives us some clues as to how a young girl with a formidable intellect grew into one of America's literary giants.
Book Description
Frank Schaeffer grew up in Switzerland's L'Abri, an idealistic community founded by his parents, the American evangelicals Francis and Edith Schaeffer. By the time he was 19, his parents had achieved global fame as best-selling authors and speakers, l'Abri had become a mecca for spiritual seekers worldwide — from Barbara Bush to Timothy Leary — and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. By the age of 23, he had directed two multi-part religious documentaries and had helped instigate the marriage between the American evangelical community and the anti-abortion movement. But as he spoke before thousands in arenas around America, published his own evangelical bestseller, and worked with such figures as Pat Robertson, Jack Kemp, Jerry Falwell, and Dr. James Dobson, Schaeffer felt alienated, precipitating his own crisis of faith and eventually resulting in his departure.
Schaeffer has since become a successful secular author. He was reduced to stealing pork chops from the grocery store in LA, rather than take on any more high-paying evangelical speaking gigs.
With its up-close portraits of the leading figures of the American evangelical movement, Crazy for God is a uniquely revealing and powerful memoir, which tells its story with empathy, humor, and bite.

I can guarantee you will cherish this book.......2006-03-13
This man lost three children to starvation and dysentary in Jerusalem during WW I. One can't imagine that such a kind and loving person really existed. I try to read a little bit each day as a role model to help ensure that I am kind to others.
This book would make an excellent gift for anyone. I can assure you that they will cherish it.
This remarkable work should be known far more than it is .......2004-10-19
This is a remarkable story of a remarkable person. Aryeh Levin was a very humble, and righteous person, one who dedicated his life to helping others. He was a legend in the Jerusalem of his time, a faithful student of the great first Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Abraham Yitzhak Ha- Kohen Kook. He was also a legend for his help to the Jewish prisoners who the British held at the time of the Mandate. Above all he was known for his remarkable kindness to every person he met. He was truly a person who fulfilled the Biblical injunction of the prophet Micah, who ' loved justice, did mercy and walked humbly with his G-d"
This book is filled with wonderful stories about him, and is recommended to anyone who wishes to be inspired and learn from this tsaddik ( righteous man) in our time.
Biography of a positive role-model.......2001-05-15
Cover-to-cover anecdotes of events in the Rabbi's provide any reader with a long list of ways to make a difference in life.
A very good book advertised to a limited audience........1998-08-23
A Tzaddik in Our Times is a biography of of a man that few people outside the Jewish world would know about. This is an absolute travesty, because this man's life should be an inspiration to everyone, regardless of religious affiliation. These days, heroes are hard to come by, and role models seem to have died off with the last generation. Reb Aryeh is that hero, that role model, and his life is not just an interesting story. It is a guide to anyone who would lead a meaningful life, a roadmap to the soul.
Customer Reviews:
An extraordinary book about a true holy man........2005-06-10
Simcha Raz is one of the great Jewish storytellers of our time. He was a pupil of Reb Aryeh Levin and wrote this work telling his life story. Reb Aryeh was a true Tzaddik whose deeds of kindness in the Old Yishuv of Jerusalem were legendary then, and have remained legendary in the minds and hearts of subsequent generations. Reb Aryeh was in the close circle of Rav Kook, was the Rav of the Jewish prisoners fighting for independence at the time of the Mandate. But his deeds of kindness, his sacrifice for others go well beyond the expectations even of , if there can be such a thing an ' ordinary' holy person.
This is an extraordinary book . It is especially suited I think as inspirational Bar- Mitzvah gifts. But is for Jews of all ages.
Read it and be inspired.
