Nice to see .......2004-10-09
For years people in the Southern US have been taught to loathe this man. Of course, the crime he is mainly hated for today is thathe refused to commit one.
The book gives a very good description of the feelings and actions of this bravely loyal fellow. While, like most biographies, the author takes a personal liking to the subject and is likely to give facts in a way to make him seem better than he was, the book is very accurate.
I only wish more loyalists get this type of Biographical treatment.
In Search of Balanced Perspective.......2000-12-28
History is usually written by the victor, or at least from the victor's perspective. To some extent this is unfortunate, since historical "truth" requires a balanced perspective. If one is truly interested in understanding the American Revolutionary War, then one must actively seek out the perspective of the losing side. That is why books like, Piers Mackesy's The War For America, 1775-1783, David Syrett's The Royal Navy in American Waters, 1775-1783 & Edward Cashin's The King's Ranger are so important. The first two put our revolution in overall geopolitical perspective from the British point of view. The latter focuses exclusively on the often neglected "southern campaign". With the excitement generated by the 1999 movie, "The Patriot", this book is re-released at an opportune moment. While the beginning and ending portions focusing on Thomas Brown's pre- and post-american life, respectively, are somewhat dry and could stand more judicious editing, the central meat of the book is an excellent and scholarly contribution to the study of the American Revolutionary period. In this book we gain insight into the significant role of tories in America as well as the american indian contribution to the campaign in the south. We learn what happened to most tories after their cause was lost and come to realize just how close we came to being on the losing side. This is a scholarly work of history, portions require concerted effort and concentration to wade through. However, the "pearls" contained within, particularly in the central portion, are well worth the effort.

Book Description
This sweeping history tells the story of an idea, The Southwest, through the development of American anthropology and archaeology. For eighty years, anthropology more than any other discipline described the people, culture, and land of the American Southwest to cultural tastemakers and consumers on the East Coast. The author uses biographical vignettes to recreate the men and women who pioneered American anthropology and archaeology in the Southwest and explores institutions such as the Smithsonian, University of Pennsylvania Museum, School of American Research, and American Museum of Natural History that influenced southwestern research agenda, published results, and exhibited artifacts. Equally influential were the Yearners--novelists, poets, painters, photographers, and others--such as Alice Corbin, Oliver La Farge, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and Laura Adams Armer whose literature and art incorporated southwestern ethnography, sought the essence of the Indian and! Hispano world, and substantially shaped the cultural impression of The Southwest to the American public.
"This is a really outstanding, important book. Don Fowler, a noted archaeologist, historic preservation specialist, and historian of anthropology, has written a comprehensive account of the anthropological quest to understand Native cultures of the American Southwest prior to World War II. Combining many threads of evidence, Fowler presents brief vignettes that highlight and summarize the intellectual endeavors of the fascinating men and women who have worked in the American Southwest, using it as their laboratory, and who made it the most studied culture in the world. A Laboratory for Anthropology presents a fresh, new approach. I know of no one better than Dr. Fowler to write such a synthesis."Dr. Nancy J. Parezo, Arizona State Museum

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!! Great Price!!!.......2007-07-02
I have read several of Diane Iron's books and this one is up to par with her other books. I think that this is the first book, in her series of books about beauty, that a person should read. As a make-up artist, I feel that I have a great deal of knowledge about makeup and beauty but Diane Irons always, always teaches me something new.
Another wonderful book from Diane Irons!.......2003-06-23
"Bargain Beauty Secrets" is the perfect book for those who want to look good and feel great, but do not want to spend tons of money on beauty products and supplies. Diane Irons' tips are easy to follow and require little or no money at all. Many money-saving tips and advice are included for fitness, make-up and cosmetics, accessories & clothes, travel, shopping, and much more. Plus, there are lots of homemade facials, masks, and remedies, all that require simple, unexpensive materials easily found at home or the supermarket. Not only that, but the book also included many model and celebrity secrets from people such as Jennifer Aniston, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, and much more. Anyone who has enjoyed Diane Irons' other books or wants to look beautiful without spending too much money will love this book.
A Great Bargain All Around.......2002-12-11
What a great little book! Diane Irons brings insider tips,
model tricks, and thousands of ways to look and feel more
beautiful. As usual, the natural, alternative techniques
are included, but there's so much more. There are inexpensive
fitness techniques, fast fixes for emergencies, and great spa
recipes. I like to keep Diane's latest book right by my
makeup mirror to try a tip a day!
A compilation of beauty tips that do not cost much.......2002-12-09
This is a good compilation of beauty tips. The tips are organized in different chapters, such as diet, excercise, hands, feet and so on. However, this is not a basic beauty book. If you are looking for the whole picture, look elsewhere. That said, some of these tips are really good. There are several do-it-yourself beauty treatments. Diane Irons also gives tips on how to proceed: this is a collection of beauty tips, but some principles are outlined as well. Try to be creative. Simplify. Do not accept meaningless statements such as it cannot be done on a such and such budget. As a matter of fact, Diane Irons succeeds to show that it can indeed be done. Being beautiful and well-groomed does not need to cost that much. Maybe you wish to save in some areas and splurge on others. You do not have to do it all. This is a collection of inspiring ideas that you can pick and choose from. The beauty of it is that you have a choice: where to spend and where to save.

Having written about all it takes to become a chef in Becoming a Chef, and about how those chefs do their work in Culinary Artistry, James Beard Award-winning authors Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page have turned their attention, with Dining Out, to the subject of restaurants and restaurant critics. Restaurant owners, chefs, and critics alike get their turn to discuss the mercurial world of restaurant criticism--is the restaurant critic a valiant consumer advocate or a villainous ruiner of careers and businesses?
Dornenburg and Page interview 61 members of this "food intelligentsia" and offer the reader a snapshot of the process on either side of the kitchen door. New York Times critic Ruth Reichl notes, "I wake up in the middle of almost every night before a review is printed, agonizing over where the mistakes are.... I knew if I had called a turnip a rutabaga, my career was over." And chef Norman Van Aken says he believes "wholeheartedly in the idea of critical analysis, whether for books, movies, or restaurants. I just wish the public would understand that there are bad reviewers as well as bad reviews." Through interviews and research, Dornenburg and Page explore what it takes to become a critic, how the critics themselves feel about their power (not to mention what the restaurateurs feel), and the changing nature of what makes a great restaurant.
The book is packed with great quotes from chefs and critics, and peppered with sidebars on such handy topics as how to work with a wine steward in a restaurant to achieve the wine experience you're looking for. A lengthy appendix lists critics' favorite restaurants in more than 20 cities, and the beautiful black-and-white photographs by Michael Donnelly evoke both the fun and serious sides of restaurant life. Dining Out will appeal to foodies who delight in the behind-the-scenes stories of both chef and critic, and to anyone who's ever wondered just who those restaurant critics are, anyway.
Book Description
"This book will enrich and enlighten anyone with an interest in dining out." —Patrick O'Connell, chef-owner, The Inn at Little Washington
"The King of Spain is waiting in the bar, but your table is ready." —Sirio Maccioni of Le Cirque to New York Times restaurant critic Ruth Reichl
"If you've invested $1.5 million in a project and certain people can crush you like a bug if they have a bad time, you're a fool if you're not trying to find out who these people are, what they look like, and when they're in." —Bob Kinkead, chef-owner, Kinkead's
Just as food has become our national obsession, so has dining out virtually become its own sport. Dining enthusiasts, eager to get the take on new restaurants and the status of old favorites, look to restaurant critics and their discerning palates for guidance. So, who are these secretive personalities who often dine incognito and whose public judgments can make or break a restaurant or chef? Be a guest at their private table in DINING OUT: Secrets from America's Leading Critics, Chefs, and Restaurateurs, the first book to demystify the critical process and to unlock the secrets of a great restaurant experience.
Drawing on extensive interviews and research, co-authors Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page expose the wide-ranging experiences and insights of dozens of the most powerful palates in America, among them Gael Greene of New York, John Mariani of Esquire, Ruth Reichl of The New York Times, Phyllis Richman of The Washington Post, David Rosengarten and Caroline Bates of Gourmet, Patricia Unterman of The San Francisco Examiner, S. Irene Virbila of The Los Angeles Times, and Dennis Ray Wheaton of Chicago. They reveal their occasionally outlandish schemes for remaining anonymous—and what happens when their covers are blown! The critics also divulge how they review restaurants, what they think about the star system, and how they temper their personal biases when judging food, service, and ambiance.
Then Dornenburg and Page turn the tables, sharing the sentiments of well-known chefs and restaurateurs from across the country as they review the restaurant critics, from their credentials and rating systems to the forceful impact of their reviews. The chefs and owners of dozens of celebrated restaurants including Al Forno, Campanile, Chez Panisse, East Coast Grill, Fleur de Lys, Frontera Grill, Le Cirque 2000, Red Sage, and Stars offer their own definitions of excellence in food, service, and setting, and reflect on the role that the customer plays in the total dining experience.
Special features of the book include:
- A guide to leading food critics' favorite restaurants across America
- Restaurant review resources available on the Internet
- Advice from renowned sommeliers Larry Stone of Rubicon and Jean-Luc Le Dû of Daniel, and maître fromager Max McCalman of Picholine
- Musings by Pulitzer Prize-winning critics of architecture, media, and music on how they might approach restaurant criticism
- Special interviews with Danny Meyer on Providing Hospitality and Mark Miller on The Progress of American Gastronomy
"Finally, the best insider's view of our business for the discerning restaurant goer. Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page do a wonderful job of exploring the 'behind-the-scenes' side of professional cooking. As [New York Times restaurant critic] Ruth Reichl would say, 'HHHH'!" —Daniel Boulud, chef-owner, Restaurant Daniel and Cafe Boulud
"DINING OUT is a fascinating story, one that absolutely needed to be written. I found this book to be a compelling, revealing, and utterly entertaining look at what the critics, and those they criticize, had to say." —Michael Romano, chef-partner, Union Square Cafe
"This is no fair—it took me a lifetime to learn all these insights into the restaurant business! Well done!" —Ella Brennan, owner, Commander's Palace
"DINING OUT is both entertaining and educational, and can make your restaurant experience the same. The sommeliers' comments add to the pleasure." —Robert Mondavi, owner, Robert Mondavi Winery
"Not unlike theater, restaurants have been made or destroyed by the words of a critic. DINING OUT goes beyond the words to explore the underlying logic of the restaurant critic. It is an invaluable addition to the library of those who like to dine out." —Leonard A. Schlesinger, professor, Harvard Business School
"Don't start this book if you're hungry—the guide to leading critics' favorite restaurants across the country is a challenge to start one's own food odyssey and eat at least one meal in them all!" —Jeanette S. Wagner, vice chairman, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.
"Michael Donnelly's photographs of restaurant life shimmer with élan, bursting on the page in glints and daubs of light and shade. If you are a connoisseur of fine cuisine and artful photography, you will delight in these pictures." —William Wegman, artist and photographer
"DINING OUT is an intriguing foray into the secret and powerful world of restaurant criticism. Michael Donnelly's photographs confer an element of high style and high drama to this intelligent and absorbing book." —Nancy Novogrod, editor-in-chief, Travel & Leisure
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating and entertaining, with more drama than opera!.......2004-06-18
As someone who follows the restaurant scene with the same level of enthusiasm that some teenagers follow Jessica Simpson, I got caught up with all the brouhaha around the debut of the new New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni. This got me curious about restaurant critics and their methods and whether anyone had ever studied the subject, which led me to the one-of-a-kind book Dining Out by Dornenburg and Page. I found it incredibly illuminating, not to mention entertaining. The authors dissect every detail of how reviews are written and stars awarded, based on interviews with leading food critics such as Tom Sietsema (now of The Washington Post), S. Irene Virbila (of The Los Angeles Times), and Dennis Ray Wheaton (of Chicago Magazine). They also interview leading chefs and restaurateurs about their views on critics and the power of the press. I've come to learn that there is as much or more drama in the world of restaurants as there is in opera! This book even breaks down what it took to get a four-star review when former restaurant reviewer Ruth Reichl was at the helm.
Every discerning diner should read this book for an eye-opening look at the state of contemporary restaurant criticism, not to mention a tasty behind-the-scenes read about some of the country's best restaurants (including the rise and fall and rise again of New York's own Chanterelle restaurant, which just won Restaurant of the Year at this year's James Beard Foundation Awards).
A great look at what Ruth Reichl and other top critics do!.......2003-04-11
As a fan of both Tender at the Bone and Comfort Me With Apples, I've been looking forward to learning more about Ruth Reichl's life as one of America's most influential restaurant critics. This book was a fun look at what Ruth and other top critics do for a living: the secretiveness (and how she used disguises and credit cards with different names), the challenges (such as the weirdest things they've ever eaten, which range from fried worms to braised goat penis!), and the highlights (such as Ruth being told at Le Cirque, "The King of Spain is waiting in the bar, but your table is ready"). Dining Out is an enjoyable and informative read for any intelligent reader who loves the world of restaurants and the fascinating people who populate it!
A fascinating insider's look at restaurant reviewing........2003-04-08
I became intrigued by the life of restaurant critics after reading former New York Times restaurant critic Ruth Reichl's wonderful memoirs "Tender at the Bone" and "Comfort Me With Apples" and wanted to learn more about the ultimate profession for people who love to eat (but don't necessarily love to cook). Ruth appears on the cover of "Dining Out" (wearing a beautiful black hat whose brim covers most of her lovely face), and there are lots of photographs of her on the inside as well where she shares some of her hilarious experiences reviewing restaurants. There is probably more about Ruth in this book than any other critic interviewed. One of the authors (Andrew Dorneburg) is a chef who has cooked for Ruth and writes about how nerve-wracking it was when she came in to eat at the restaurant where he was working at the time and she was recognized (despite the fact that she went on to buy numerous wigs and wore various disguises on other visits to other restaurants in order to remain anonymous). I never realized how much a critic's opinion can sometimes make or break a restaurant. I also enjoyed reading Ruth's list of her favorite restaurants across the United States (the back of the book is kind of a restaurant guide, and mentions different critics favorite restaurants in cities across the US) and hope that someday I can eat at every one of them!
"Dining Out" is a fascinating book that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves dining out in restaurants and/or is curious about what it's like for Ruth Reichl and other restaurant critics who do so on a regular basis. It is an informative, funny, and touching journey through life in and around the restaurant business.
Nothing to get excited about.......2003-03-14
In college we all sit around late, drinking, and complaining. This volume shows that chefs do that too. I found very few secrets or even good ideas. But I did find a lot of chefs crying about being misunderstood by the public and the reviewers. I guess speaking with the authors was cheaper than getting a therapist. But the authors' style is consistent. Still that uncritical idol worship.
One of the best books ever written about the restaurant biz........2003-02-19

Customer Reviews:
Raku: A Practical Approach.......2006-01-15
A complete resource for raku firing. Specific technical information for kiln construction, as well as photos, glaze recipes and much discussion about experimental materials for reduction. If you had only one book to learn about raku tecniques, this should be the one.
The Second Raku Bible.......2002-11-30
This is the second Raku Bible that I have used and referred to repeatedly over the years. There is a short section on what Raku is and the history of Raku, but then it quickly moves into the guts of technical information on Raku. Branfman includes clay recipes (for those who are interested in actually mixing clay) and several glaze recipes with some details on how they perform.
The real meat of the book is on kilns, building kilns, and firing a Raku kiln. Branfman covers firing in both an electric and a gas kiln. He also details many plans and techniques for building your own Raku kiln. Branfman also details many variations of firing methods including reduction firing, piece removal, and post firing reduction methods. Sprinkled throughout the book are great examples of finished pieces using many different styles and techniques that I have used as a repeated source of inspiration. Overall, the book is a very excellent text that covers the practical aspect of the Raku art form.
Easy reading, filled with detailed information.......2001-08-26
Recently I got the idea of replacing my current electric kiln, and converting the old kiln to a gas-fired rake kiln. I posted a question on the ClayArt mailing list asking for advice on how to do this. Every single reply refered me to Steve Branfman's book! I quickly bought a copy, and found it to be every bit as good as advertised. In an readable, conversational style, Steve covers a wide range of topics, including some history, glaze formulations, types of kilns, firing advice, and health & safety. Where needed, he gives very detailed and specific technical information (the section on determining BTU requirements for burners was *exactly* what I needed). He also provides great recommendations on sources and suppliers. For anyone who wants to get started, or go further, with raku, this is a great book.
Raku A Practical Approach.......2000-05-13
A very good resource for anyone who is interested in the Raku process. I would not recommend this book for novice Raku artists because of the technical terms used in the book. The author does expect you to know varios technical terms. I found this book very hepful to me as I have been a Raku artist for 2 years. This book is easy to read and the photos are great. There are also a few glaze recipes that I enjoyed experimenting with.
This is one of the most complete books on raku I have seen........1997-09-27
I have been a potter for many years and recently decided to build a studio with a kiln in my home. This book was of immense help. It gives detailed instructions and ideas for every aspect of raku from building a kiln (many choices) to mixing glazes and clays, designing a studio, teaching a workshop to health and safety concerns. It has much more practical information than any other book on raku that I have seen. As the author states in the beginning of the book, though, it is not for the novice. He assumes you already have a fundamental knowledge of the art of ceramics. I have recommended it many times to other potters. Margaret Gooding

Description:
The present investigation was undertaken to compare the adsorption efficiency of pecan shell-based granular activated carbon with the adsorption efficiency of the commercial carbon Filtrasorb 200 with respect to uptake of the organic components responsible for the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of municipal wastewater. Adsorption efficiencies for these two sets of carbons (experimental and commercial) were analyzed by the Freundlich adsorption model. The results indicate that steam-activated and acid-activated pecan shell-based carbons had higher adsorption for organic matter measured as COD, than carbon dioxide-activated pecan shell-based carbon or Filtrasorb 200 at all the carbon dosages used during the experiment. The higher adsorption may be related to surface area as the two carbons with the highest surface area also had the highest organic matter adsorption. These results show that granular activated carbons made from agricultural waste (pecan shells) can be used with greater effectiveness for organic matter removal from municipal wastewater than a coal-based commercial carbon.

Description:
Activated carbons were prepared from pecan shell by phosphoric acid activation. The pore structure and acidic surface groups of these carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, Boehm titration and transmittance Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The characterization results demonstrated that the development of pore structure was apparent at temperatures >=250^oC, and reached 1130m^2/g and 0.34cm^3/g, respectively, at 500^oC. Impregnation ratio and soaking time at activation temperature also affected the pore development and pore size distribution of final carbon products. At an impregnation ratio of 1.5, activated carbon with BET surface area and micropore volume as high as 861m^2/g and 0.289cm^3/g was obtained at 400^oC. Microporous activated carbons were obtained in this study. Low impregnation ratio (less than 1.5) and activation temperature (less than 300^oC) are favorable to the formation of acidic surface functional groups, which consist of temperature-sensitive (unstable at high temperature) and temperature-insensitive (stable at high temperature) two parts. The disappearance of temperature-sensitive groups was significant at temperature >=300^oC; while the temperature-insensitive groups are stable even at 500^oC. FTIR results showed that the temperature-insensitive part was mostly phosphorus-containing groups as well as some carbonyl-containing groups, while carbonyl-containing groups were the main contributor of temperature-sensitive part.

Eh.......2004-09-23
This book was OK I guess. It didn't really help with any anxiety, I got through my anxiety with positive things, not this book. It did have some useful information in it so if you get a chance to skim through it or borrow it from someone, then go ahead. If not, then maybe skim through the book in the store before buying it online.
Keep Looking!.......2000-04-27
This book was too ambitious. It covered too many topics, spanning from childhood to adulthood, without really getting to any helpful information. Don't waste your time or money on this one.
Too Broad a Spectrum.......1999-10-11
This book had some interesting points to consider but its major flaw was it covered too broad a range. In trying to be complete in coverage, most of the information is too general. The author not only dealt with many types of fear and anxiety but also with different age groups running the gamut from childhood to adulthood. There isn't much new in ways of dealing with fear and anxiety if you are a reader of these types of books. The chapter that I found most illuminating was the one about why you won't have a heart attack, die, etc. while having a panic attack. I've never seen that information written in any of my previous readings. I do disagree with the previous reviewer, however. I did not feel any of the conditions were trivialized. I also suffer from agoraphobia and think that it is naive to expect a self-help book to cure you. I think it is extremely difficult to give specific help when the audience is such a generalized population with varying degrees of symptoms, fears, and anxities. I did not feel I learned much new but the suggestions and strategies were straightforward and consistent with my other reading. The bibliography is a good starting point for further reading. Overall I would say this is a good overview but for more specific types of worry, fear, anxiety and phobia, I would chose a book that was narrower in focus.

Book Description
Among the many eminent and talented artists involved in the creation of illustrations for the wood-engraving resurgence of the 1860s, George John Pinwell emerged as perhaps the very best. A thorough review of Pinwell's art, especially his graphic æuvre, highlights the extraordinary importance the popular graphic arts played in the development of nineteenth-century British realism. This book discusses Pinwell's relationship to the commercial and technical world of stylistic Victorian journalism and his works' thematic significance to Victorian art. Also discussed is the stylistic influence of John Everett Millais (1829-1896); Pinwell's relationship to other artists of his generation including Frederick Walker (1840-1875), Arthur Boyd Houghton (1836-1875), and John William North (1841-1924), as well as his legacy for the next generation of artist/illustrators including Luke Fildes (1844-1927), Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914), and Frank Holl (1849-1914)-all contributing to a broader understanding of Pinwell's stylistic importance.

Survival For a Dream.......2007-01-24
The Defiant is the story of Shalom Yoran (born Selim Sznycer)
, and his time spent with the partisans fighting the Nazis in Poland. After three years on the run , with his family , from Nazi mobile killing units , the Nazi terror finally caught up with them and in the little town of Kurzeniec , 1 040 Jewish men , women and children where dragged from their homes and hiding places , murdered and burned. Included among those slaughtered where Selim's parents.
Selim and his brother escaped into the woods and joined the partisans , and heeded the last words of their mother to survive and take vengeance for them.
This is the story of the partisan guerilla warfare against Nazi terror.
Although Selim fought among non-Jews , he always fought first and foremost as a Jew - with them but not as one of them. He dreamed of having his own country , of fighting for it and even dying for it-that is what kept him alive. The dream of surviving and living in the Land of Israel as a free Jew and building it.
After the war , his dream was fulfilled , and having escaped the Soviet Army that tried to draft him , and the British blockade that tried to keep Jews out of Palestine , he settled in Israel and joined the airforce , becoming a prominent businessman in Israel.
The Zionists in Europe where always the backbone of Jewish resistance to Nazism.
Success is the best revenge.......2007-01-13
I read the original hardbound edition of this book maybe five years ago, after chancing upon a copy with no prior knowledge of its contents or author. I read the book quickly, and recall being on the edge of my seat with each turn of a page. The author, named at birth as born Selim Sznycer, tells briefly, of his family's flight from the Nazi invasion of western Poland to the eastern, Soviet-occupied town of Kurzeniec, where they remained until the Germans bombed there too, killing his parents.
Rather than surrender to a certain death, Selim (who later changed his name to Shalom Yoran) and his brother Musio fled to a deeply forested swampy area, at whose center they constructed a hidden bunker with some friends. There, they struggled merely to stay clothed, warm and fed. They had little to trade and no money with which to buy, and were reduced to infrequent forays into villages several miles distant, where they could steal enough rags and potatoes to survive. Lighting fires was difficult; the smell or sight of smoke could attract attention.
At one point, Yoran left the hovel to search for food only to return and find several comrades dead. He and his brother then fled further east, and ultimately joined the Soviet and Polish partisans. This was not only an act of extraordinary defiance, it was itself fraught with danger, as both the Polish peasants and Russian partisans with whom they fought were themselves highly distrusting, and hateful, of Jews. At first, Selim was not trusted with guns. He was left to fight with sticks, a fake rifle, and in one case, a pitchfork. But gradually, a few comrades developed trust and respect for him, as he became an expert at bombing the railroad tracks carrying German supply trains. He derailed several trains; the sabotage stopped German war materiel transports--and required extensive new track construction, significantly slowing Germany's war machine in the region.
Ultimately, the author survived and fled Europe for Israel, where he broke through the British blockade, joined the Israeli air force and built a successful Israeli business. Although Yoran necessarily survived only by fighting, success (as I have written before) is the best revenge. And for Yoran, that came through building a new life, business and family in Israel.

Life of a warrior.......2007-01-12
A well written story. Consise and able to take the reader on a journey. Full of lessons in life, and examples of what a person is able to live thru and do in their life.
Amazing perspective from a person who was not only able to survive unbelievable odds but do so with a determination and stile.
Gripping account.......2006-04-15
More and more survival accounts are starting to come out in regard to Jewish partisans, whether they were Soviet or Polish. This is one of the most interesting accounts I've read and goes to show that Jews did not just sit by and idly wait for death, on the contrary they tried the best they could to come to grips with reality and take revenge for what was happening to them and their families. A quick and compelling read, the author wrote all his memories down right after the war so that they were still fresh and much of what he describes rings true and is worth knowing and acknowledging. A worthwhile account of a struggle rarely remembered or thought about.
A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back.......2003-03-10
The Defiant: A True Story Of Escape, Survival & Resistance is the personal memoir of Shalom Yoran, a young man who dared to become a Jewish resistance fighter in Poland during the grim years of World War II. Yoran's story (and the story of the brave men and women who fought with him), is brought forward from a manuscript which he drafted fifty years ago while recuperating in an Israeli hospital. A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back in spite of atrocity and anti-Semitism on all sides, The Defiant is a welcome and highly recommended addition to World War II History collections, Holocaust Studies, and 20th Century Jewish History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Excellant book!.......2005-04-21
I very much enjoyed reading such a fascinating book. I never realized the work of the Jewish partisans nor the anti-smitism that also existed on the part of even the resistance fighters.
Just a great book that really emphasizes the terrors of the Nazi regime. It also goes to show what happens to a people who are disarmed and in many cases have only sticks and pitchforks to fight back w/.
Not really another Hollocaust book........2001-03-22
I loved this book. This is very different than "Bravest Battle" or "Hiding Place". There are a half dozen points I would have never learned: - This was a 14yr old from an upper middle class family. He was able to constuct a dirt house & survive a brutally cold winter with NO supplies or knowlege. - Everyone hated them. The Russians, the Polish farmers, everyone. - At one point he lived rather free, but under Russian Rule. Even though the consequences were death or life in prison, every person under Socialism cheated and were capitalist. From kids to grannies. Rather powerful! I'm making each of my kids read this book. It was great & I read it straight through.
Intreaging and heart stopping.......1999-04-17
Shalom Yoran is a long time frind of my grandparents. I visited him at his hous a few months ago. There i got a signed copy of this book. It is the gretest book i have ever read. This is one book every person in the world should read to learn what the jewish people went through. Find out the truth about the holocaust and what we could have prevented
