4 out of 5 stars A Life Vest Thrown Into A Stormy Ocean.......2005-09-17

With society placing the stress it does on females being physically thin, I think the numbers this book quotes for the totals of US women with serious eating disorders is, if anything, on the low side. I along with virtually every woman I know has at one time or another had what amounts to an eating disorder and in a few cases, had them to a serious extent. With body image being as important as it is, particularly with teenage girls, I'm pessimistic that this book or anything else can do more than try to spur the one suffering from this insidious disease to WANT to do something about her affliction. I read this book because I was curious to see if things have gotten any better in the last decade as far as treatment of eating disorders goes, and also in the level of collective recognition among young women that a disorder is there in their own lives. From what I read here, I'd say the answer to both is no. On the positive side, this book did one of the better examples of addressing this life-threatening situation and if it can be gotten to the right hands, it could truthfully save some lives that might be in danger right at this very moment.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - the authors have an in depth view of the disease.......2002-06-08

Dying to be Thin helped me in ways beyond measure. I knew that a lot of what I was doing to my body was destructive, but only after reading the book did I want to seek help to end the disease- or try to at least. A big thank you and hugs to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. It gave me the courage to quit........1999-11-02

I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who suffer from anorexia or bullemia. I purchased this book at the height of my disease in 1997 and it gave me the courage to quit. The stories are real and so easy to relate to. I cried through half the book realizing how pathetic I was. I would love to someday personally thank the authors...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and complete case studies-format; packed with info.......1998-06-29

I read this book as my daughter was hospitalized for anorexia. The fear and guilt were HUGE as I began reading (they still are) but Zimmer's and Sacker's work as an M.D. specializing in Eating Disorders has provided much-needed insight into sufferers' motivations and pain. My daughter, age 14, marked all the pages that "spoke" to her...she marked MANY pages. Authors Zimmer and Sacker attempt, and for the most part succeed, in explaining all variations of EDs. Esp poignant for me were the comments from a mother, and her powerlessness to stop her daughter from destroying herself through starvation. I bought several copies to distribute to family members so that they can support my daughter in recovery. Very useful is a section for educators on how they can assist a student who has an ED.

      5 out of 5 stars Kentucky Housewife.......2007-08-23

This book was meaningful to me since I am from Kentucky. It is not only a cookbook but a history book of times when the housewives had to prepare meats without the use of refrigerators and freezers.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of Recipes.......2002-06-07

Historical reprint cookbooks are not the best place to go for exciting recipes, detailed instructions, and precise measurements. But they are a lot of fun to read.
With over 1000 recipes (and some very small print) this cookbook is even more fun than most. The recipes too seem more exciting than is typical -- the author doesn't just offer 20 types of bread, 10 over-cooked vegetables, and instructions for roasting or boiling plain meat. She gives real recipes, some of which look like they actually have flavor!
But be aware that the long list of recipes is a bit misleading. The book is sort of like a chinese restaurant menu, where the same basic cooking method is offered for, for example, beef, veal, chicken, pork and fish; or a dessert might be described with 10 different fruits -- as 10 different recipes.

            Book Description

What if Picasso had been a chair maker and Stravinsky a designer of tables? What would have been the impact of such intense creative talent on twentieth-century furniture? Today there is a man with this quality of profound artistic vision and talent who has devoted his life to making furniture. His name is Sam Maloof, and this book is his life and work told in his own words. Sam Maloof started making furniture immediately after World War II, when there was very little demand for hand-made objects. His perseverance through 'years of difficulty is a testament to the depth of his love for wood and for working with it. Since childhood, Sam has also been in love with technique and has constantly developed his precise sense of form and design. These three loves-of wood, of making things, and of designbrought him to the world of furniture and eventually to an honored place among America's leading artistcraftsmen. As with true great art, everything Sam Maloof makes seems simple. His furniture has a clear rhythm and flow, a bright vitality that eludes analysis. All his furniture is functional: chairs are comfortable; tables, while sculptural, are still tables to be used; desks are custom-designed to meet the needs of each user. Though Maloof furniture designs are all intensely his own, they remain unassuming and natural. His work has the calm, sure quality that comes from technical mastery combined with a creative joy in finding ways to let wood speak. A first encounter with a piece of Maloof furniture is like meeting a friend from the past-the warmth of relationship is immediate and delightful. This warmth never pales. The qualities of his work are mirrored in the artist. Sam is open, direct, and gracious. He projects a feeling of affable dignity and goodwill, and he works with the ease and clarity seen in his furniture. Work for him is not drudgery. It is a renewal, an affirmation. He and his wife, Alfreda, live in a meandering house that nestles in a lemon orchard at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, near San Bernardino, California. Sam has been building and expanding the house for thirty years. It unfolds as a series of surprises, from Sam's workshop at one end to the new guestroom at the other. Every room contains the ceramics, woodwork, textiles, baskets, Pictures, and other beautiful things that nourish the Maloofs and give them pleasure. Sam Maloof's technical mastery of woodworking is coupled with mature, strongly personal artistic expression. He has set a standard for his craft in North America and the world. Future generations of craftsmen will see him as one of the major artistic lights of this century.

5 out of 5 stars A must-own for anyone who appreciates art in its purest form.......2006-11-10

As you most likely know, Sam Maloof is an icon in the world of woodworking. This book does a great job of both highlighting his many creations as well as to tell the story of the man who would define an entire style and change the face of fine furniture. Written by Sam himself, the book gives you an insight into his genius and humility that you can't get anywhere else other than from the man. And it's clear he had creative input into the design of the book itself, as it's beautifully illustrated and elegantly laid out. I'm relatively new to woodworking and the brilliance of Sam Maloof, but I'm so glad I'm able to have discovered him while we're still blessed with his presence on the earth. Get this book.

5 out of 5 stars sam maloof a briliant man.......2000-01-12

I bought this book when I was a student of woodworking/cabinetmaking in college, after hearing and seeing and studing some of Mr.Maloof's work in class. I found his command and respect for his craft, and the material that he works with to be second to none. His work is a insperation in it's self but once you find out the story behind this unbeliveable man it is all the more fasanating. his simple thoughts and down to earth style are a insperation to all. after reading this book I was amazed and inspired by this man and will remember and re-read this book may times.he will always be a insperation to myself and all woodworkers for years to come

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent book. A must have for any woodworker!.......1998-11-24

Sam Maloof is a world treasure. His book reflects his passion and skill as a master. Sam's book is not written in a pompous manor but in a matter of fact point of view. Sam shares his life with us and puts it on paper. I have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Maloof and his lovely and gracious wife, Alfreda before her passing. Sam's love and passion for his craft is second only to his devotion to God and his love for his beautiful wife. His book reflects that in a way that is educational, thought provoking and simple. His warm and friendly demeanor in person is very evident in this book! Sam beleives there are no secrets in woodworking. He shares his finish and techniques in this book, although this is NOT a "how to" book. Reading this book, you will learn something about philosophy, Spirituality and some woodworking along the way.

                  Book Description

Saffron is an important spice of high economic value. Used as a dye, and in the cosmetic industry, some interesting medicinal properties have recently been attributed to this genus. The book covers the research on the cultivation and genetic improvement of Saffron and all aspects on the botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and cultivation of the species.
For two decades saffron specialists explored methods of improving its cultivation in the field and also in vitro. This research has resulted in a comprehensive and contemporary overview of saffron (Crocus Sativus L.) which will be of great interest to all concerned with the study and use of spices and medicinal plants.

William Wright takes on the question of nature versus nurture, examining the roles heredity and environment play in determining not only what we look like, but why some of us like coffee rather than tea or prefer cats to dogs. Wright's position is clearly in favor of genetic control of our predispositions, based on compelling evidence from various research such as the famous University of Minnesota studies of identical twins raised separately and from newer work such as that outlined in Dean Hamer's Living with Our Genes. Wright states emphatically, "The nature-nurture war is over." But he carefully avoids much of the outcry that met biologist E.O. Wilson's introduction of the principles of sociobiology by stating up front that genes aren't everything: "None of the data turned up by behavioral geneticists shows genes to be tyrannical commands, but rather nudges, sometimes strong, but more often weak."

Wright makes a strong case for genetic determinism, while carefully distancing himself from the socio-political ramifications of saying people are "born that way." He does this by showing how decades of research pointing toward genes as determiners of body and mind has been misinterpreted by groups or individuals intent on achieving their nonscientific goals. --Therese Littleton

                  Book Description

"Wright does his homework on behavioral genetics with the thoroughness of an academic scholar, but without the narrowness of mind and ambition that plagues the academy. Wright's devastating treatment is a refreshing smack on the point. Not only is his book well-researched and reasoned, but it is written with elegance and verve, and should capture the attention of professionals and public alike. Science reporting as good as this is as rare as it is valuable." --Robin Fox, University Professor of Social Theory, Rutgers

"William Wright's Born That Way is a revelation and a pleasure. Clear, witty, eminently readable, it presents the mysteries of human genetics and behavior in a way that leaves the reader enlightened, conversant and entertained. It's a most rewarding book on this elusive and fascinating topic." -- Robert Stone

"William Wright's remarkable new book makes the genes-versus-environment conundrum not only comprehensible by the non-expert, but highly entertaining and sometimes even dramatic. -- Alison Lurie

"It takes an independent writer and free spirit to tell the story straight, and thank God Wright has done it. Born That Way is ... informative, well written, and entertaining ... William Wright chronicles the strife-filled odyssey from nurturism (the human mind is a blank slate, environment is all) to the modern discipline that has uncovered the powerful influence of both heredity and environment." --Edward O. Wilson

"William Wright's Born That Way is truly impressive. It's as easy to read as it is fascinating and complex. Wright has assimilated so much research and used to present his many thought-provoking conclusions, I stand in awe. Wright is not only an excellent writer, he has a genome for enlightening, gentle humor." -- Ann Beattie

3 out of 5 stars Useful information, marred by the "professional writer" approach.......2006-09-16

I found this book worthwhile as a review of twin studies and recent work in behavioural genetics.

Unfortunately it gives the impression that Wright is a professional writer who does not understand his material all that well. For example, he treats manic depression aka bipolar disorder as if it is exactly the same thing as depression. The conditions are very different, and with quite different degrees of heritability.

It's probably a good idea to read this book with caution, always bearing in mind that Wright's interpretation of the studies he describes may not be reliable. Even so, it's a useful reference to the source studies.

5 out of 5 stars An Alluring Introduction to a Blinding Science.......2005-09-13

The developing understanding of the human genome will bring us the most dramatic medical changes that humans have ever seen and this book serves as more than a solid introduction to the science which is and has been developing at a blinding pace. Psychological theory of the last 60 years has been turned on its head as biologists offer genetic evidence of inherited traits that go far beyond eye and hair color and into wild, specific intricacies that definitely will blow your mind if you haven't read other texts dealing with this exciting topic. Wright offers a comprehensive and thorough view of what has been the battlefield between behavioral geneticists and environmentalists - the conclusion, as Wright and his contemporaries see it: nature vs nurture is no longer of any consequence, but nuture operates through nature. This is a critical distinction made by Wright numerous times through the book which indicates that rather than being condemned by our genes, our understanding of them helps us eliminate the environmental attributes that also play a role in our development. Very highly recommended. If your thirst for behavioral genetics isn't sated after reading this, I recommend Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on practical behavioral genetics.......2004-08-10

William Wright does a terrific job of making a complex subject readable and readily understandable. The crux of the story revolves around Thomas Bouchard's, now famous, twin studies in Minnesota. As Wright tells the story of the remarkable similarities found between identical twins separated at birth and reunited after 20-30-40 years, one becomes stunned by the heritable clarity of traits, temperaments, abilities, intelligence, and metabolic rates and so on and so on. It's just breathtaking; so much so that's it's worth reading a second time just to make sure you didn't miss anything.

As the book progresses, Wright names the players on either side of the nature-nurture debate and what becomes clear from the outset is the astonishingly blinkered mindset of the environmentalists. Theirs is hardly a search for truth, but one of obstructing progress in order to further a socialist political agenda. Wright recounts the debates and the duels through the press, and the periodicals of the scientific community, until you're flustered with rage at the audacity of these obstructionists. Medical progress means less to these left wing scientists than the protection of their political agenda. Just amazing! It's reminiscent of the Catholic Church versus Galileo in the early 16th century. And, Wright makes it into a compelling story so easy to read, and to understand, as to make its perusal a delight.

I couldn't help seeing the same socialist obstructionist patterns in "Born That Way" as I've seen in "Constant Battles" by Leblanc re anthropology, in "Taboo" by John Entine re racial differences in athletic achievement, in Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" about free market economics vs. Socialism, in Fumento's book "the Myth of Heterosexual Aids", in Bjorn Lomborg's book "the Skeptical Environmentalist", in Charles Murray's book "Losing Ground" and Myron Magnet's book "the Dream and the Nightmare," both about the trials and failures of government policy in welfare, and in books on 30 other category's of social policy as practiced in America over the last 40 years. It's the same story of resistance that Wright found when he took it upon himself to write this excellent book about the profound debates ongoing in the nature-nurture arena.

I've enjoyed "Genome" and "Nature via Nurture" by Ridley, and "Living with our genes" by Hamer, and "The Selfish Gene" by Dawkins, but this is the book I'd recommend as the introductory read in what is becoming the biggest medical breakthrough in the history of man: the reading of the Gene String via the Human Genome project. Wow!

                  5 out of 5 stars In a word: Fascinating!.......2000-12-28

William Wright tackles the link between genes and behavior in plain language. He makes it clear that as human beings with consciousness and choice, genes do not dictate behavior, but contribute to it. He separates the politics of the fear regarding genetic research from what we know and how we know it and how we use new information. He also discusses how researchers might avoid some methodological hazards or the accusation of fudged data (document everything!).

He says, "Most scientists take the position that knowledge is neutral, value free; the use to which it is put might be good or bad, beneficial or hurtful to society in general. First, learn as much as we can, then let society decide how new information will be used. The opponents of behavioral genetics have consistently feared such a climate of unfettered inquiry." (p. 215)

Much of this book focuses on twin studies, but Wright also describes some of the research on hormone levels and their effects. He attempts to tease out the variables of nature and nurture on specific behaviors such as intelligence, depression, and a tendency toward violence.

My reading of this book sparked a frenzy of my reading other books on twins, homosexuality, and other research on the links between genes, environment, and behavior. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Highly Readable.......2000-10-27

Unlike other scientific books related to psychology and behavioral genetics, Mr. Wright's book does not bog down in "techno-jargon". He does a superb job at simplifying and codifying years of legitimate scienctific research regarding the genetic nudges of behavior. Having spent years myself as a psychology graduate student combing the same research, Wright is on target. The two most interesting aspects of his book is that he actually interviewed, face to face, prominent researchers in this field. Moreover, Wright adeptly outlined the history behind this turbulent subject. He put into words what I have observed for years; that some well-educated psychologists can be blinded to convincing scientific evidence. It is courageous of Mr. Wright to actually name the researchers which might have ulterior motives not to examine the evidence with an objective eye. In the end, "Born that Way", may not be the definitive book on behavioral genetics. However, it is an outstanding reference for people who wish to know more about where psychology has been and where it will soon be grounded. I certainly recommend this book to psychology students.

5 out of 5 stars important Holocaust memoir.......2003-03-10

Edward Stankiewicz begins by describing his life in prewar Warsaw--his schooling, early love of Latin, and graduation from his gymnasium in 1939 shortly before the German invasion--and his escape to the Soviet-occupied zone. In Lwow (Lemberg) where he attended the university as a student of classics, he began writing Yiddish poems and joined the Writers' Club where he met other Jewish and Polish writers.

After the Germans occupied Lwow, he was forced to work in a factory that provided the German army with leather and pelts. Later, in a German uniform, he fled to the Ukraine where he wandered from town to town for several months until he was captured by the Gestapo, beaten, and sent to Buchenwald.

There, as a Pole hiding his Jewish identity, he ended up working as a scribe in the block for sick and dying prisoners. He also managed to continue writing poems, some of which are reproduced in this book.

As hellish as Buchenwald was, the fact that its political prisoners had for the most part wrested control of its inner workings from the camp's criminal prisoners, meant that there was something of a buffer between the prisoners and the SS in charge of the camp. This situation allowed the prisoners to exact their own justice. Twice Stankiewicz saw prisoners kill other prisoners who had been kapos at other camps ("Buchenwald was meting out justice the prisoners' way."). Toward the end of the book the author describes the day--April 11, 1945--the camp was liberated by the Americans.

The author's passion for poetry and language runs like a thread through the entire book (he is professor emeritus of Slavic linguistics and literary theory at Yale University). His memoir is an important source of new information and insights about previously little known aspects of wartime Eastern European intellectual life, as well as a moving story of survival against incredible odds.
