Book Description
The title is descriptive in that the idle time in the field carries as much of an interesting nature as do the idols sought. Idols refers broadly to artifacts of all varieties. The excavating, surveying, and consolidation of structures has been frequently unorthodox .

Kudos.......2003-03-20
IDYLLS AND IDOLS by Will Wolf is a marvelous little gem and should be required reading for any student who is interested in a social science career. Through a light tongue-in-cheek style, Wolf gives the reader an adventure in past and current cultural lifestyles and human accomplishments.
Wolf's prose is clear and compelling. Most importantly, he delivers quality knowledge within an enjoyable and entertaining framework of participant observation.
IDYLLS AND IDOLS is a "journal experience" that leads the reader through the art and science of description and explanation. I strongly recommend IDYLLS AND IDOLS to all students of human affairs.

So much change.......2007-09-14
Riding a lot 10+ years ago, and starting again this year, I needed an upgrade. I picked this book up to help bring me into the current era and I wasn't disapointed.
My first dive into the book focused on the peddaling, heart rate and nutritional areas. After reading this, I really felt like I could sift thru a lot more of the (mis-)information that I was hearing. I don't ever expect to be this level of a cyclist, but it was great to learn about what really makes a difference - and what (at least as far as the current studies show) doesn't.
Nicely put together!
Over the Top.......2006-08-07
This was an interesting book but not particularly what I was looking for. I was looking for a book about riding technique to improve my efficiency. With the exception of a few paragraphs here and there, this book went deep into design physics of components, etc., etc. It would be great if you were into research and development of cycling compenents. However interesting it may have been, almost every chapter ended with a phrase that went something like this, "The research is inconclusive because of...."
Amazing Information.......2006-03-19
Thanks to Dr. Burke that he'd reviewed amazing world of cycling to me.
But some chapter have too hard to understand data that lots of equation (maybe i'm to stupid to understand)
Good source for serious cycling.
book for the technosci dweeb.......2006-02-23
I found this book to be an excellent collection of articles covering various aspects of the science of cycling. Bike fit, measuring aerodynamics, pedaling efficiency, and so forth.
Some of it passed way over my head, but I learned quite a bit, for example, from the chapter on pedaling efficiency, such as studies showing where dead spots typically are, optimal cadence studies and the like. The studies regarding energy use by professional riders in stage races was great information.
The book is not going to help improve my riding directly as much as, say, a book the The Trainging Bible, but more knowledge about my sport is a great thing. I highly recommend it.
Ed's the man..........2005-08-05
Ed was truely someone who loved cycling, sports medicine, and science. He died riding a few years ago and I hope that when I go I am also doing something that I love.
I have previous editions of this book and several of Ed's other books. I used to be confused about seat height, until I read Ed's collection of data from various studies on the topic. I now keep my road bike saddle at 109% of my inseam (w/shoes), my touring/CX bike at 105%, and my mountain bike at 100-105% depending on whether I am climbing or decending most.
He collects data from around the world, and includes data from his own research. Ed repeats various data across some of his books, but you wont mind, its all good, and relevant. Ed references work by Chris Carmichael (Lance's coach), Steve Hed, Leonard Zinn, Greg LeMond, various sports doctors and researchers, and various expert cyclists. He covers nutrition, hydration, aerodynamics, seat height, geometry, training plans, weight training & cross training, periodization, etc.
Some of the information is non-conclusive - Ed gives the data in a way that allows you to determine what is the best choice for your types of riding, but many times the 'best' choice is so obvious you are not confused or left hanging (like SO MANY other bike books do).
Book Description
One of the first and most important—and most successful—cookbooks by America's beloved Julia Child. Using a very accessible approach to French cooking from an American point of view, here are recipes and techniques for the beginner as well as the more advanced cook, using easily available ingredients for everything from soups and appetizers to dessert. Black and white line art and photographs throughout.

Good basic cookbook.......2007-07-30
I have purchased several of her books and I like this one the best. I particularly like her use of fresh herbs. I began growing herbs and find that they make a huge difference in flavor.
A couple of years ago my sister came for Thanksgiving and I made the turkey using her method of mirapoix, wine and fresh herbs (someone had posted it on an internet site before I bought the book). Only change I made was to add a lot of fresh sage. The family is still talking about what a wonderful flavor the turkey and the gravy had.
Just like new.......2007-01-18
Book received very quickly & in even better condition than advertised, just like new. Did not expect to get it before Christmas and it showed up a week earlier than anticipated. Outstanding!
Hidden Masterpiece. Buy it now!.......2006-07-04
`From Julia Child's Kitchen' by the great culinary teacher, Julia Child, is an account of the recipes from the second major PBS `The French Chef' series, filmed in color in the WGBH Boston studios, just as the book, `The French Chef' covers recipes from the very first black and white series of shows. These two books have probably been lost in the shadows of the monumental two volume `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' and the later `The Way to Cook' and Child's collaboration with Jacques Pepin and Dorrie Greenspan on baking. Since this book is so much in the shadow of other works, I half expected to find a few traces of clay feet on the great Julia. Let me assure you that I did not. This book is every inch as delightful and informative and insightful as every other culinary work from Ms. Julia and her various collaborators. In fact, this book is so good, it is almost a crime that it should be available from a Random House discount label rather than its original imprimatur from Alfred A. Knopf (a Random House subsidiary).
The very most important fact to learn from this book is, as Ms. Child says, that it is `self-contained'. Essentially, that means there is nothing for which you have to go searching for in one of her earlier books, such as how to make a veloute sauce or how to coddle an egg. Next in importance is that while the book is heavily based on the French cuisine, it is a bit more strongly oriented to American tastes and methods than the classic `Mastering...'. Less important to the average cook, but of great importance to me is the insight Ms. Child gives to the task of learning cooking and of becoming an accomplished cook.
I find it an enormous irony that the while Julia Child created the modern American archetype of how to write a good recipe AND there have been writers such as Diane Jacob (author of `Will Write for Food') who does not see the point of writing recipes in any other way, Julia states that an experienced cook can, in fact, successfully execute a recipe which has nothing more than a simple narrative outline of what the cook is to do, much as Ms. Child's famous British contemporary, Elizabeth David did in her first work, `A Book of Mediterranean Food'. And, this `alternative' style of recipe writing and philosophy of cooking education is popular with some very good English food writers, especially Nigel Slater (`Appetite', `Kitchen Diaries'). So, even though Julia Child, throughout all her books, gives us very detailed recipes, she is all in favor of internalizing cooking principles and striking off on one's own.
One upshot of this is that this book is a really excellent text for a cooking class. Not only are all recipes explained in great detail, but lots and lots of reasons why things work the way they do are given, without ever dipping into technical scientific language, and having to apologize for that fact. So, we find Julia Child to be the mother of not only mainstream culinary writing, but also of the brand of culinary explanation done so well by Shirley Corriher and Alton Brown. And, she even does a better job on some matters than his nibs, Alton!
My favorite chapter for evaluating cookbooks, if there is one, is the chapter on egg cookery. This is because there are so many egg dishes that are virtually all about technique. Leading the list is the classic French omelet, except that Ms. Julia reveals the rather obscure fact that there is no one French omelet recipe. There are at least three, and she gives us instructions for all, but giving the most attention to the classic Parisian style typically done with a minimum of egg beating, lots of butter, and a flattish iron pan. She actually starts this chapter with a very long discussion on the ins and outs of making a good hard-boiled egg. I have known for a long time that there are two major schools of hard-boiled egg cookery. There are those who instruct us to pierce the eggs with a pin and dip them into boiling water and there are those who tell us to put the room temperature eggs into cold water, bring them to a boil, and let them sit in hot water for a certain time. Ms. Julia recommends the first (most famously advocated by Mark Bittman) and refers to the second method as `coddling', although the two methods produce virtually identical results, except that the second method takes a bit longer. Julia does not cover every possible egg dish, and yet for those she does cover, she does a better job than any other I have read, including those found in `the good egg', a book by Marie Simmons, dedicated entirely to the egg cookery.
There are several other surprises in this book. It includes, for example, a complete survey of techniques for separating oil from water, including one incredibly effective technique using a simple piece of chemical equipment called a separatory funnel. I am totally amazed that my hero Alton has never gotten around to demonstrating this technique.
This may not be the very best cooking textbook ever written (I think Madeleine Kamman's `The New Making of a Chef' may be somewhat better), but it is written with such charm and it is so cheap that it would appeal to even the most thrifty and most word weary students imaginable. It is especially delightful to see Ms. Child having no reservations about using modern cooking aids. I am even surprised to find her using a gadget for poaching eggs instead of using the purist's approach of laying the raw egg into swirling water.
This is a superb first cookbook for new cooks with all of the insights and few of the `haute cuisine' patina of Julia Child's better-known works. (I agree with other reviewer that pics are poor, but its the words that really count here).
Great book, miserable edition.......2005-07-24
This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks, well-used and well-worn. This new bargain edition is better than not owning the book at all, but it is really cheap and poorly made. The graphics all appear to be photocopies. The line drawings look awful, but at least they are "readable." Many of the photos are so dark that you can't tell what they are supposed to represent.
I would look for a used copy of the original edition.
For cooking novices, Julia's best book.......2004-05-19
This unassuming book, a companion to Julia Child's original WGBH TV series, doesn't have many recipes, certainly isn't comprehensive, and has only pathetic, tiny, black and white illustrations. But it's loaded with detailed explanations of the basics--what to do, why to do it that way, what will happen if you do it the wrong way and (sometimes) how to fix things that have gone wrong. The book is really almost a programmed learning text on cooking, although it isn't presented as such. I don't know of a better cookbook for novices, who can soon follow it to create really impressive dishes that will earn accolades, and help keep up their interest in cooking. Not all the recipes are classics. Some are the author's innovations, but make the point that, by combining basic techniques, interesting new dishes can be done. For example, the two sauce "Lasagne a la Francais" is unlike any Lasagna you've ever had--but wonderful--and makes perfect sense once you've been through the earlier recipes in the book on whose techniques it builds. If I were looking for a book for someone who didn't really know how to cook, but wanted to learn, this is the one I'd get.

What would you give to see the notes Julia Child keeps in her handwritten loose-leaf kitchen reference guide? Your wish is granted! This clever little volume was inspired by Child's notebook, compiled from her own "trials, remedies, and errors."
Organized by large category and technique, it's a very handy reference guide for anyone reasonably comfortable in the kitchen. Each section contains a master recipe followed by variations. The emphasis is on technique, so if you occasionally find yourself trying to remember at what temperature to best roast a duck, the best way to cook green beans and keep them green, or how to save your hollandaise, then this is the book for you. And what good is a reference guide without an index? As always, Child comes to our rescue with a fantastic, comprehensive index, 19 pages long for 107 pages of text, so we can find the answers to life's burning questions in a flash.
Part of what makes Julia Child such an icon is that she can describe a complicated dish, and in the next breath convince us to make it. Classic Chocolate Mousse, Sabayon, Scalloped Potatoes Savoyarde, and Butterflied Leg of Lamb sound manageable when they follow recipes for Roast Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, and Scrambled Eggs. And with Child's help, they are. "Quick, snappy answers" for both basic and complicated cooking questions make this a work we'll never outgrow. And if Julia can use a cheat sheet, so can we! Fans of Child will love that her personality shows through in comments like, "Don't crowd the pan... or you'll be sorry," and, to introduce her Basic Vinaigrette Dressing, "I use the proportions of a very dry martini." Eight pages of photos taken by her husband, Paul, including one of Child with the famous dancing goose, make this even more of a treasure.
If there is anyone qualified to offer kitchen wisdom, it must be Julia Child. After a lifetime of cooking and teaching, her knowledge is a perfect gift for fans, novices, or anyone responsible for putting dinner on the table every night. --Leora Y. Bloom

Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful cookbook!.......2006-07-05
This instantly became my favorite cookbook and I use it so much that it doesn't spend much time on the shelf. This cookbook transcends the "collection of recipes" style of most cookbooks; its style is more "how to improve your cooking skills."
Even so, some of my very favorite recipes are in this book. All the recipes adaptable and are presented in a way to make your own adaptations easier. For example, I love the braised rice recipe and found it easy to adapt the recipe for brown rice by a few minor adjustments. And this rice is good! Really, every recipe that I have tried is good.
In addition to producing wonderful tasting food, these recipes aren't the type that take hours of elaborate preparation. You can use this book to prepare full, decent meals after work in a reasonable amount of time.
This book is suitable for nearly all levels of cooking skills. It assumes some familiarity with basic cooking techniques, so a first-time cook might need a little help.
Just a Wonderful Little Cookbook.......2006-06-29
I have an enormous cookbook collection, but I still buy more... The title of this book says it all - Essential Techniques and Recipes from a Lifetime of Cooking. It's slim but every page has valuable wisdom from Julia Child - you can almost hear her as you read each page. I have already purchased three additional copies of this cookbook as gifts for my two daughters and my mother. It is totally appropriate for the beginning cook as well as the most experienced.
Technique and mindset for the Chef-Philosophe .......2006-04-16
When a cook stops regarding his work as
a process of rote food preparation from basic recipes, and
instead views it as a disciplined craft that transcends
way beyond the kitchen confines, then he/she is ready for
this book and others like it.
Comprehensive.......2005-11-27
You don't need another cookbook. It covers the basics of almost anything you are likely to do in the kitchen that involves a basic technique. From leek and potato soup to roasting a turkey, it has instructions that will help you get good results if you pay attention, and I have cooked almost everything in the book.
Loved it.......2005-10-01
With all Julia Childs' cookbooks out there, I was glad to see one that consolidates her later thinking on recipes.

It's amazing that objects so beautiful come from such simple techniques! These French beaded flowers sparkle, shine, and surprise, and yet they're made just by stringing beads on wire and wrapping them around to form stems and petals. Some of these flowers serve as eye-catching ornaments; others are sublimely practical, such as napkin rings and tiebacks. Follow the well-illustrated instructions to craft wildflowers, roses, daisies, tulips, anemones, and hydrangeas. For each one, there's a "What You Need to Know" and "What You Will Learn" box as guidance. The dazzling items include Black Tie Candleholders, Forsythia Urn, Lamp Shade, Tulip Tin, Clay Pot Critters, and Mistletoe Ball. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.

French Beaded Designs by Donna DeAngelis Dickit.......2007-01-12
Easy to use and understand for everyone. Excellent
Another great book.......2007-01-10
I just received this book a few days ago, and I can tell already that this will be up there on my list of greatly used books! This book also has wonderful pictures of the finished product with much inspiration. I have not sat down to do any patterns yet, but have several that I am working on assembling supplies for. The directions seem well written and thorough. I would highly recommend this book to any level of beader as she starts with basic patterns and builds on those as she goes.
A Magnificent Collection of French Beaded Flowers!.......2006-03-02
Though I haven't had much time since I purchased this book, to go through each of the projects, I must say, the Vintage-style Beauty of many of the Flowers is Wonderful! The designs have a classic style that exudes an ELEGANCE, which is often lost in the french beaded flowers that I see more commonly. There's a lot of competition out there with other french beaded flower books, and I think this one wholeheartedly makes a unique place for itself amongst the bookshelf where my collection of more than 30 french beading books rest. I don't think you'll be disappointed, and surely you will be INSPIRED...I know I was!!!
This book took me to the next level.......2005-09-26
This book far surpasses any other book I've found in explaining the little details that transform your flowers from the ordinary into the elegant and extraordinary. While it doesn't provide instruction for as many flowers as do the Dalene Kelly books, the ones it does provide are gorgeous, romantic beauties. And you learn professional techniques along the way: how to make a precise pointed petal tip. How to lace-as-you-go. How to create more natural-looking leaves than just the normal cigar-shaped ones. I highly recommend this book, especially for intermediate beaders.
Designer Beadwork: French Beaded Designs.......2005-08-19
Well worth the money. Great color examples of the techniques make the examples easy to follow.

Food for Little Fingers by Victoria Jenest could make a big difference for parents from the time their children start solid food up to about 2 years of age. On the premise that children eat better if they can pick up food with their hands while they phase into using utensils, Jenest gives 117 recipes for wholesome temptations she created for her three children. To keep her family away from all refined sweeteners and white flour, she uses fruit juices for sweetening and only whole-wheat flour. New parents will find important advice on what is safe for babies and toddlers to avoid choking and help minimize allergy problems. Many of the recipes look good enough that Mom and Dad won't mind sharing them.

Best baby cook book I've read!.......2007-04-07
This is an excellent book! All the recipes are easy and most are very quick.
I notice some people say the recipes are for messy/drippy foods. I've cooked about 15-20 of the recipes and haven't found any that are messy.
Also I love all the liver recipes. Liver is an EXCELLENT source of protein and iron - perfect for growing babies. All the recipes are very healthy and balanced. Really the perfect way to feed a baby/toddler.
I really like this one.......2004-02-14
Ok pictures would be nice but I can deal without them espically for a book that I liked. I have tried a number of these recepies and for my 10 month old and he seems reasonably pleased. They also are pretty easy to make. Mostly just combining ingredients and cooking. Oh and they are truly finger food. If you are worried about alergies their is a section in the front about substitutions that is helpful. It also contains a lot of different recepies so even if your little one dosen't like everything it should still be useful. Oh and if you can find its only about 5 dollars so the price is right for experimenting.
This book should be a national best seller!!.......2004-01-28
This is the book I have been looking for since my son turned about 8 months old. This little gem is packed with delicious, nutritous foods that your little eater can pick up and pop in his own mouth. So far I've made 4 of her recipes and all 4 have been gobbled up as fast as he can eat them. Since she packs so many good things into each recipe, I know that every bite he takes gives him a variety of essentials, instead of wondering if he ate enough vegetable, enough protein, etc. She uses normal everyday ingredients that I have on hand without being afraid to include spices, herbs, onions, garlic, etc. I definitely don't want to raise a kid who won't touch food that has a speck of pepper or an herb, and these recipes are the right step toward raising a child with a taste for all types of food. Oh, did I forget to mention that everything I've made is absolutely delicious for mama, too? I ate about half the pan of Lemony Tuna Squares by the time my son had eaten his fill. As a single parent, being able to sit with him and eat the same food is wonderful for both of us. I have recommended this book to all of my todder-mom friends and if you want to raise a healthy eater then you need this book! I cannot recommend it highly enough.
great help with toddler eating for a good price.......2003-07-08
I found this cookbook to be very helpful in coming up with nutritional and yummy meals to entice my extremely choosy 2 1/2 year old. Not every dish won him over and not every dish was something I wanted to make for him (fish recipes are challenging enough for me to try), but overall, there are some great choices in here. For example, the Fruit and Cheese Cakes (basically, cheddar and apple pancakes) are truly delicious; the Peas and Carrots Balls incorporate an egg into the mix without your little one spotting it (for that matter, the carrots and peas are rather hidden too); the French Toast Sandwich went down with only a little coaxing. Jenest offers great advice on what to think about when cooking for your child, and she also gives tips on choosing store-bought foods when you don't have time to cook.
And it's a great price.
Please note that your child should be chewing well for most of these dishes.
Save your money!.......2002-11-14
One star is too many! I've tried many of these recipes for my 2 yr. old, and he'd taste it and then turn up his nose. He is not a picky eater! He loves shrimp, broccoli and even eats salad. I thought these recipes would be a fun addition to his regular menu. Don't waste your time on this book. You can come up with healthy creative recipes on your own. Buy some mini muffin tins and buy the cookbook Quick and Healthy II..... take any of the quick bread recipes and bake them in the mini muffin tins and you've got healthy treats for little fingers. Take any of your favorite recipes and bake them in mini loaf tins and you'll have tasty food for little fingers. This book should be called yucky food for little fingers! If anyone would still like a copy, send me... to cover shipping and you can have mine!

An Assimilated Jew Transforms Himself.......2000-01-19
Cowan was raised as the most upper-class of Jews; he even attended an elite, priveleged high school out East where he was required to go to Episcopalian services. This is the story of how he slowly left that world and discovered his Jewish roots. Cowan writes from the heart, expressing all his emotions about his journey, including his fears. I am from an extremely traditional Jewish background, and was very impressed at his openness to first learning about something that he really knew little about, and then gradually beginning to practice it. (One of my favorite parts of the book is when he puts on tefillin, a morning ritual for Orthodox Jewish men). In addition, this is also a story about his wife. Raised as a Protestant, she comes to share his love for his new-found faith. A unique book. It is a shame that Cowan passed away so young; a sequel would have been great.
