Book Description
Recollections and Letters shows all the varying facets of Lee's character. His letters reveal his personal warmth, bravery and concern for the South during and after the war. No other collection of source materials gives such a whole and rewarding picture of one of the South's greatest sons and heroes.

A Measure of the Marble Man.......2004-12-23
Robert E. Lee never had the chance to pen his own autobiography as U.S. Grant did. He meant to, but kept holding it off until heart disease claimed his life five years after the surrender of Appomattox.
Many of those who served under him during the Civil War wrote biographies of the great Confederate General, claiming to know how he felt, and what he thought. But only two of them really came close. The ponderous but solidly written "Memoirs of Robert E. Lee" by his Aide, Colonel Long, and this volume, comprised of letters actually written by Lee, and the remembrances of those who knew him well, and none more so than the author of the book, his own son, Captain Robert E.Lee, Jr.
Captain Lee describes his childhood in the Lee household, of General Lee's love of animals, especially horses. He describes a man who smiled, was warm, as compared to the austere, solemn descriptions and illustrations of him once the Civil War commenced. He writes how Lee agonized within his own family of the decision to leave the U.S. Army, and then join the Confederacy, even though wishing for a quiet, neutral life, and of Lee's personal losses during the war - a daughter who passed on, a son wounded and captured, the son's frail wife also passing on, and the known loss of their dearly beloved home in Arlington, which was turned into the national cemetery of the same name.
Captain Lee studiously avoids the controversial sides of Lee, his stand on slavery or the rights of the South, concentrating mainly on the personality of man and how he dealt with others.
This is a volume that belongs on the shelf of any Civil War buff, especially those interested in the life of Robert E. Lee.
I recommend this book, and Burke Davis' "Gray Fox" be purchased together.

Mead and Benedict: Kinship of Women.......2002-03-29
I found this book extraordinary good reading. It reviews their lives during childhood and moves thru both Mead's and Benedict's lives until Benedict's death in 1948. The last chapter does provide information about what happened to the leading players in the lives of both women in later years. I found it much easier to read than Howard's book, which is completely different, with lots of stories about Mead but very difficult to follow chronologically. The author's background in psychology is evident and I recommend the book highly.
A Special Friendship and Bond.......2000-06-29
As a historian of anthropology, I looked forward to reading this book. The relationship between Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead has been subject to much speculation. No scholar has seriously analyzed the impact the relationship had on the two women in question or American anthropology in general. While several biographies are available about Benedict and Mead, none delve deeply into the relationship they shared throughout their lives. Having finished the text in question, I am torn. For, as a historical analysis of Benedict and Mead the text is superficial. The author, Hilary Lapsley, a New Zealand psychologist who teaches women's studies, has a tendency to skate above the surface and does not delve deeply enough into the respective controversies Benedict and Mead became embroiled in during their careers.
This critique however is rather specialized. For the vast majority of readers unfamiliar with the intricacies of the history of American anthropology will be impressed by a sympathetic portrait of two of the most influential women in anthropology to date. The fact that Benedict and Mead were lovers is now well known and their "friendship" is contextualized within women's studies, feminist psychology, and lesbian studies. The author, herself a lesbian, adds great insight into the nature of their relationship for she points out it was not condcuted in isolation. It is her examination of Benedict's and Mead's "friendship cirlces" that I found particularly insightful. By friendship the author is refering to the twentieth century version of what Carol Smith-Rosenberg called "the female world of love and ritual". The author also does not dwell too much on the sexual aspect of their relationship, a trap that might have sold more books but infringed on the dignity of Benedict and Mead.
In short, Lapsley's book is not a biography in any sense but a particularly personal portrait of two women, friends and lovers throughout their lives. As such, she sheds new light on their work and lives for both those interested in the history of anthropology and those with a general interest in Benedict and Mead.

"real" baked goods.......2007-09-13
This cookbook is the best I've found for "real" taste and texture in low carb baked goods. Equipping your pantry with the right ingredients helps to make the recipes simple. Most of the quantities are too large to eat all at once but freeze well individually wrapped. This allows you to mix up your treats by making a few recipes.
If you are diabetic or low-carb'g - buy this book. .......2007-03-11
I live in a rural area so it's hard to find a lot of the ingredients here. However, I found all of the products at a health food store in a large suburban area so the products are readily available for most people. The web site doesn't exist anymore that is referenced in the book. I made one recipe: the carrot cake. The cake was moist and surprisingly very similar to regular carrot cake. I was introduced to Xylitol with this book and I am very pleased with that product.
She has recipes for breads and pastries - like cinnamon rolls, yummmmm. The carrot cake was very good and did not taste low sugar or low carb at all. I believe that we should all get away from white flour and sugar anyway - the ingredients include almond meal, xylitol, oat flour, splenda, stevia, and there is a lot of fiber in each recipe. I am surprised the web site is not up. I'm also surprised more people are not talking about this book.
THERE IS A GOD...I SWEAR I'D DIE WITHOUT THIS BOOK!.......2006-07-08
THIS BOOK IS MY SAVING GRACE...IT'S SO HARD TO FIND ANY SATISFYING SCRUPTIOUS ALTERNATIVES TO OUR FAVORITE HIGH CARB COUNTERPARTS ANYWHERE, AND URSULA SOLOM CHANGES EVERYTHING WITH THIS BOOK. I ACTUALLY FEEL LIKE I AM CHEATING IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD. THESE RECIPES ARE DELICIOUS AND I ACTUALLY DO PREFER THEM TO THE "OLD BAD STUFF" AS SHE ALLUDED TO IN HER BOOK! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AUTHOR AND HAVE BOUGHT THIS FOR MANY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
Outstanding!!.......2004-12-30
What a great book with so much information that even I can understand. Ursula Solom has put her heart into this book and I know like many other cooks we are anxious to try out her new recipes and enjoy.
I read recently, in an interview, that the author attributes inspiration for the book to being in excellent health. Said having quit all forms of caffeine freed the mind for more creativity. [...]
I want to thank the author for writing a really great book.
Low carb dosen't need to m ean no flavor........2004-12-20
I love the recipes I have tried. My favorites are Pecan Toffee Crunch, which are just like candied pecans but low in carbs. So often foods that are low in carbs often are even lower in flavor. Another delicious recipe is the Nutty Hi-Pro Mini Bars. These are moist and so creamy......they are worth the price of the cookbook. Try the crepes...you will not be disappointed. Another delicious recipe is the Meringue Shells....made without sugar and yet are fantastic. Another recipe I love is the Shortbread Cookies. They are soft and yummy. The Sandy Pecan Balls are comparable to Russian Teacakes and are as delicious.
Some great bread recipes are the Date bread, olive and Brown bread. These are all wonderful. Just because it's low-carb does not mean you are sentenced to a life of no flavor .The author has spent considerable time in explaining different sweeteners and where to get them. This book will revitalize your commitment to eating low-carb, because the flavor has not been sacrificed.

Definitely the Best.......2007-01-17
I have had this cookbook for four years and it is still my favorite, I use its recipes at least twice a week. Not only are the recipes easy to follow and prepare, but they taste so great. I find the tips and side notes very helpful. I also like the writing style, because it doesn't assume you are an expert already in the kitchen.
Excellent Recipe Book.......2005-07-14
This book is absolutely excellent. She has everything from appetizers, to the various meats, various types of cooking from grilling to casseroles and simply yummy desserts. I have 2 of her previous cookbooks and this is a good compilation of the two plus extras. She lays it out well and offers helpful hints in the columns to help convert it to other recipes, etc. It doesn't have pictures of every recipe (maybe the only downfall) but does have many glossy full pages of pics. It's well worth the buy.
Comfort indeed!.......2005-03-07
I've had this book for about three years, and it is the most popular cookbook in my collection. Every recipe I've tried is delicious and never disappoints. The author has very helpful hints in the margins of each recipe so even a novice cook can't miss.
One of the best cookbooks ever!.......2003-12-19
I have bought numerous cookbooks, but by far this is one of the best ones. I constantly go back to this one. "300 Best Comfort Food Recipes" does not have a lot of pictures and I know what people think, I'm one of those people. "What no pictures or no pictures for all recipes?" It doesn't matter. I've tried about 10 recipes from this book so far in the past 2 months and they have been awesome. I should try more but I keep going back to the same ones I have tried already and I cannot get tired of them. My favourite recipes so far are the soup recipes - talk about comfort food (especially creamy potato and leek soup /and French onion soup)!

Customer Reviews:
Making Today's Crochet.......2005-08-05
I often tell people that creating a book is like having a baby: there's initial excitement, followed by a roller coaster of emotions that culminates in elation when the published product is in your hands.
Today's Crochet was extra-special because it gave me the opportunity to work with the Crochet Guild of America and its superb designers. When I sent out a call for proposals, little did I know that over 200 would cross the transom of my studio! It was very, very hard to pick the best for publication.
The garments in this book were selected to offer a variety of shapes, fit, and yarn types. Since making a sweater is a labor of love, as well as expressing our passion to stitch, I steered toward garments that wouldn't be out of style in a year or two. It was also important to offer something for every season and every skill level. After all, we don't all live in cold climates or were born with hook in hand.
I included lots of information to help people choose alternate yarns, if they so desire. There are full-size photos of yarn strands, detailed descriptions of each yarn, information about the yardage on a ball, and even some suggestions for alternative yarns. Ounces per ball were intentionally excluded. Ounces aren't an accurate way to substitute yarns. You can have the same amount of different yarns, yet they'll be different weights!
The only time that weight is important is if you're trying to figure out the yardage used in a finished sweater. (As a technical editor, I do this all the time, to make sure that a sweater actually uses the amount of yarn specified in the instructions.) In this case, I weigh the sweater, then divide the total by the weight of one skein of THE SAME YARN. Now that I know the number of balls used to make the sweater, I can multiply the number of balls by the yardage per ball, which is on the wrapper. Now I can swap in any suitable yarn because I know the yardage.
In addition to the excitment of working with the great group of people who are members of the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA), I was lucky enough to book one of my favorite models, Zora, for the photo shoot. At that time, the hit TV show Joe Millionaire, which she won, wasn't on anyone's radar. Zora is just as sweet, kind, and lady-like as she was on that show.
My favorite sweater in Today's Crochet is a black, Orient-inspired cardigan designed by the founder of the CGOA. There's a lot of stitching in the piece, but it's simple work and the result is a classic garment that you can wear for years. The chrysanthemum motif is great fun to make.
I'm also crazy about the dimensional flowers found on a vest in the book. I've made these--without the vest--and attached them to other garments! The leaves are easy, yet look really cool.
Elsewhere in the book, there's a long-sleeve, fluffy sweater called Casual Chic. It was designed by Nancy Brown. She's a CGOA past president, and an incredibly talented woman. What I like about Nancy's sweater is the way that she has combined two yarns: one offers volume and visual texture, the other helps the sweater hold its shape and lend strength to the more fragile fiber.
Thank you for taking the time to read my comments and look at Today's Crochet.
Crocheting in Chicago.......2004-08-13
Although the sweaters are easy to make I feel that many of them have a dated look. The yarn suggestions for these sweaters are those sold by CGOA. All yarn requirements are given in yardage with no ounce equivalent so it makes it a little more difficult for you to use other yarns than those sold by CGOA. For one of the sweaters I did want to make I checked the cost of the CGOA yarn and the yarn for this simple tunic would cost $120. I suggest Melissa Leapman's Crochet with Style as the patterns are modern and the yarn is readily available in many craft stores.
Basic designs.......2003-11-05
I wanted to describe the projects in this book for those who are ordering online, sight unseen:
1. feminine filet vest with crocheted flowers on it
2. longsleeve summer filet cardigan
3. summer shell with a big opening in the back
4. waist-length, longsleeve fitted sweater
5. shortsleeve "overblouse" with a plunging neckline
6. shortsleeve casual top
7. longsleeve bolero jacket
8. baggy longsleeve tunic
9. cap
10. another longsleeve tunic
11. another longsleeve tunic
12. longsleeve sweater with an oriental motif
13. baggy longsleeve pullover
Only a couple of the designs have buttons, most are pullovers or are meant to hang open. I think these sweaters could probably be done by beginning crocheters, because they are not terribly elaborate or fussy. The pictures & illustrations are in color.
The back matter includes how to do the stitches used to make the sweaters, guide to abbreviations, profiles of the designers, and other etc.
Great first book from Crochet Guild of America.......2003-05-05
This book is in the newer vein of crochet books - cool, easy to make wearables that do't look like you flung an afghan on your back. Yes, that is a style, but not one everybody would like to emulate.
This book is terrific - the patterns are lear and concise. When a stitch is referenced, the page that explains how to do the stitch is given. The book is a way of advertising Crochet Guild of America's new yarn line, _BUT_ they also give the description of the yarn and offer other suggestions of brands to use. There is also photos of the featured yarn in the back just in case you have yarn in your stash and you are not sure if it is suitable for the project you picked.
I especially liked the section on the crochet hooks. This isn't "oh, here's a size H hook, this shows you various hooks, old as well as new. And there is a conversion chart giving you the European sizes that correspond to the American sizes, a handy reference in and of itself.
There's also information on joining the Crochet Guild of America*, which does its best to promote the art of crochet. The benefits and costs are explained completely.
I recommend this book highly for all crocheters who would like to make memorable wearables. With the combinations of illustrations and instructions , a relatively new crocheter could still create an eye- catching sweater.
*Yes, I am a member, too - but I do not receive any special considerations or kickback for this review - just so you know where I stand on the CGOA.

Book Description
Why, when America and Britain are wealthier than ever, do millions of children live in poverty, neighborhoods want for basic amenities, and the middle classes fear for their families, jobs, and futures? The historical legacy of the "golden era" and the ideology of market individualism are obsessions that the New Democrats in America and the New Labour in Britain have failed to exorcize. Yet the forces of knowledge-driven capitalism provide an unprecedented opportunity to build societies more equitably based on the individual and collective intelligence of all. Capitalism and Social Progress shows how this change can be achieved.

Yeah, welcome to the world of modern medical care. Depending on how good your medical plan is, or even how good your doctor is at listening to you, you may or may NOT get the care you need and are, I might add, paying for.
This book helps you see to it that your health care provider (ie, HMO or medical plan) and doctor are giving you the best care possible, the care that is right for you.
The idea of patients as advocates for their health is not new, but this book lists common ailments such as gall bladder, Parkinson's and gives the spin on how to get your doctor to give you the best treatment.
What's really a crying shame is that when people are ill, they are not equipped to do battle with their health care provider and doctor. So make sure you have a family member read this book, in case one day you are too ill to fight for your own health care needs.
Supplement it with a medical handbook.......2002-03-18
I found this book disappointing. I started by looking up breast cancer, a most common female problem. It did not appear in the list of chapters or in the index. I then checked all 27 general references under cancer. In many of the pages just the word 'cancer' appeared with no more information. I could not find any information on breast cancer.
Next I tried prostate cancer but all I found was a mention of this problem at the end of the book under checkups in adult life.
There is, however, a complete chapter of ten pages devoted to Lyme disease, surely not one of the major scourges of mankind.
Much of this book is useful but it certainly needs to be supplemented by a good medical handbook.
Power to the Patient.......2002-03-12
I am so well pleased with the information and suggestons in this book that I am back here today to order the same copy to be shipped to my family members in Flordia amd Texas. Dr Rosenfeld speaks in a language we can ALL understand!
with gratitude.......2002-03-06
Thank you Dr. Rosenfeld for your informative articles and books. You are available to all patients with your informative wisdom and advice. It is comforting to be able to read your books when illness or uexplained pain occurs. You are the doctor in the white coat who used to visit patients at home. Now you and your books are by our bedside to reassure us and inform us of the best medical treatment and advice.

Many young people first encounter the terrible reality of the Nazi Holocaust through reading the diaries of Anne Frank. Teens who cherish that unforgettable literary and emotional experience will be fascinated by the additional insights in Anne Frank: A Hidden Life. Mirjam Pressler draws on her background as editor of Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition to explain the three versions of the Anne Frank diaries, to discuss newly revealed material, and to speculate on Anne's spiritual and sexual development during her three-year confinement in the secret annex. Pressler's title takes on a double meaning as she analyzes Anne's "hidden life," the "much deeper, purer, and finer" self the young girl wrote about wistfully but concealed from the others with a façade of cheerful outspokenness. Pressler also uses the eyewitness testimonies of the Frank family's helper Miep Gies, Anne's school friend Hanneli Goslar, and Otto Frank's stepdaughter Eva Schloss to expand our understanding of the other inhabitants of the Annex and to follow them through those unfathomable seven months in the death camps.
Anne Frank's remarkable diaries have been the subject of many other books, from learned essays to historical studies to picture books and poetry. Teens with an interest in the life of this cultural icon may also want to read Anne Frank: The Biography, The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank, and Memories of Anne Frank. (Ages 11 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Anne Frank's diary gives readers an intimate portrait of her life in hiding. But what else do we know about Anne? What did others think of her? Here, surviving friends and neighbors describe Anne as a child, and the people who protected her during the war describe the Secret Annex. Sections from Anne's diary that were recently made public give readers a closer look at the girl who wrote, "I want to go on living even after my death!"
"With balance and poignancy, Anne Frank: A Hidden Life succeeds in conveying both the individuality of the most famous Holocaust victim and the enormity of the tragedy that consumed her."
-The Horn Book
"This astonishing biography succeeds in delivering fresh and provocative insights. Incisive and vigorously imaginative..."

The Missing Link.......2003-12-09
"A Hidden Life" A book is worth a thousand words, this is worth 10,000.
Mirjam Pressler has created a chapter book that includes the others who affiliate with Anne's story, and personalities through the whole book. This book is not just about how Anne suffered it's about everyone and what they had to do to survive. It gives deeper insight on whom Otto Frank was, Margot and other people I didn't even know, who also shared the same agony. This book is the final chapter to all books; it gives every event from beginning to end; past to present. You can easily tell this book took time to write, most books you read on Anne are usually just bits and pieces taken out Anne's diary, there is no mention of anyone else, any mention of who Anne was before the Secret Annex or as a person for that matter. This book was different. I know that the author's purpose for writing this book is the same reason I decide to read this book. She wanted to give everyone a chance to know the whole story, and not from one point of view. The story doesn't just surround the horrible event taken place it let us to know Anne before the Secret Annex, during the changing of the Jewish laws, and after, when all was done. To me it's the "missing link" to all Anne Frank biographies. Anne Frank herself could only write a better book.

Biography & Analysis.......2001-02-24
If you are looking for a book that is straight biography, then this is not the book for you. There is biographical material, of course, but there are better biographies of Anne out there. This is already a very slight book and Pressler has more on her mind than biography. She is also interested in analyzing Anne's life and, in particular, her relationships with the people she knew.
Pressler is an "expert on the life of Anne Frank" so many of her observations clearly come from a solid basis in research. Much of it seems to be coming from the Critical Edition of Anne's Diary and from Miep Gies' book, Anne Frank Remembered. (These are two excellent books I would read before reading this.) Still, for someone who has already formed an idea about Anne some of Pressler's opinions can be disconcerting, particularly when it comes to her analysis of Anne's sexuality.
This does not mean Pressler's opinions are not worthwhile. For someone truly interested in imagining a full picture of a real person, there is a lot of food for thought in this book whether you end up agreeing with Pressler or not. However, this book goes beyond the simple hero-worship in which Anne's memory usually finds itself.
In my fairly wide reading on the subject of Anne's life, this book is unique in its attempt to understand Anne as a real person beyond the character she creates for herself in the Diary. Since this is an impossible task, all attempts are somehow tinged with futility, especially for someone who never knew Anne in life (unlike Gies and van Maarsen, for example). This casts a pall over this book which Pressler, unlike some highly talented biographers, does not quite have the ability to overcome. However, this book could be very important in opening up the field for a future analysis that may be better.
Melissa's was better..........2001-02-21
Just have to tell you that - I read this first, found it okay. It IS a great and easy read - full of interest, don't get me wrong - but it's just not 'the best.' - for that check out Melissa's biography. It just REALLY puts you there and is amazing with detail!
The hidden psyche of Anne Frank.......2000-05-09
In this book the author seems to have magical insight into Anne's hidden thoughts and desires. She also interprets one of Anne's passages to mean that Anne was describing her first orgasm during a petting session with Peter. I read all editions available as well as the newly released "missing pages" and I did not draw this same conclusion. She also believes that Peter did not love Anne. How would she know? I did find interesting little known information about the other members in hiding and do trust facts provided by eyewitnesses (Miep Gies for example)But overall I would recommend Melissa Muller's biography over this book. The biography provides a great deal more detailed facts about Anne's life and does offer a new theory as to who betrayed the Franks. Pressler's book is more like a psychoanalysis of Anne Frank's mind than a detailed account of her life.

Book Description
In this shocking and definitive new biography, Carol Ann Lee provides the answer to one of the most heartbreaking questions of modern times: Who betrayed Anne Frank and her family to the Nazis? Probing this startling act of treachery, Lee brings to light never-before-documented information about Anne's father, Otto Frank, and the individual who would claim responsibility -- and their terrifying and complicated relationship that continued until the day Frank died.
With The Hidden Life of Otto Frank, Carol Ann Lee presents an astonishing and moving portrait of a man whose life, both charmed and cursed, was interwoven with one of the most momentous events of the last century as the father of Anne Frank. Based on impeccable research into rare archives and filled with excerpts from the secret journal that he kept from the day of his liberation from Auschwitz until his return to the secret annex in 1945, this landmark biography explores every facet of Frank's life. The publication of Anne Frank's diary turned this quietly heroic man into a legend, but until now, apart from a few basic facts, almost nothing has been written about Otto Frank's own extraordinary life.
The father of the most famous young girl of the twentieth century, Otto Frank was born a month before Adolf Hitler, and grew up in a wealthy German Jewish household. In World War I, he fought for Germany -- which he believed to be his homeland -- as an officer in the trenches of the Somme. Lee documents these privileged early years, when Frank and his family were models of wholly assembled European Jewry. She also reveals the full story behind Frank's first cruelly thwarted love affair, as well as the truth about his subsequent arranged marriage to Anne's mother.
After struggling to establish a business in Amsterdam, Frank and his family spent happy years together before the war. Then came their period in hiding, their eventual betrayal, and their internment in the death camps of Poland and Germany. For the first time, Frank's experiences during and after Auschwitz -- and during his return to Amsterdam, where, wholly destitute, he lost everything "except life" -- are told in full. The subsequent delivery of his daughter's diary, and the publishing phenomenon that ensued, helped him begin to recover.
Deeply moving and powerfully honest, The Hidden Life of Otto Frank authoritatively brings into focus a little-understood man whose story illuminates some of the most harrowing and memorable events of the last century.

A Fresh Look at the Tragedy of Anne Frank.......2006-12-18
The Hidden Life of Otto Frank by Carol Ann Lee gives us a look at Anne Frank and her family from a different perspective, that of her father, Otto. The tragedy of Anne's short life is only heightened by the tragedy of her father's, who had to pick up his life and go on living after all of his family was destroyed by the Nazis. The fact that he was able to do so, and even become part of a new family is a real tribute to him. His absolute dedication to the memory of Anne and to the publication and promotion of her diary is laudable-- it is seen not only as a father's desperate attempt to retain some vestige of a daughter he obviously loved, but it is also his attempt to promote Anne's optimism and belief in the goodness of people.
Otto Frank's story is interesting enough; Ms. Lee did not need to spend so much time dwelling on the possible role of Tonny Ahlers into the betrayal of the Frank family. A short chapter would have been enough, but Ms. Lee keeps returning to her theory to hammer her point home. It is distracting from a book that has enough drama as it is. To me, the wonder is that the family was able to remain hidden for so long when it seems that there were actually many people on the outside who knew about the Secret Annex.
Generally children outlive their parents and hopefully become a credit to them. In the case of Otto Frank, however, it is he who is a credit to the memory of his extraordinary daughter.
Touching, but Scrambling.......2005-12-07
I first saw this book while browsing through the bookstore, and was shocked by the title. It reminded me of too many tabloid books seeking to expose specious and degrading rumors. As someone who has read Anne's diary many times and who has had a great appreciation of her father from what I had read, I was curious as to what 'hidden life' would be brought against him. I started reading the book at the store, and luckily, it turned out better than what the title proclaimed it to be.
While I thought that the parts detailing Otto's life and his experience's with his family were interesting and well researched, I also felt that the parts about Tonny Ahlers were not so interesting. A lot of times I felt as though she was scrambling for a connection between Otto Frank and Tonny Ahlers when none was to be found. In all, I am not convinced by the proposition she put forth that Ahlers was the one who betrayed the Franks.
I often hated it when she finished talking about the Franks and moved on to Ahlers. If she had left Ahlers out, the book would have been a lot more enjoyable.
Very eye-opening.......2005-04-23
While there are many things that are explained about the characters in Anne Frank already, this book goes into very deep detail about them, even more than what one would've thought possible. I will reinforce what has been said by saying that the text was a little dry at times, but still a good read.
Some of the complaints I have with this book are, the author tries way too hard to make Otto be the good guy. She contradicts herself when she does this. For example, she claims that Otto married Edith, Anne's mother because he was in need of money. She then goes into great detail about how he needed this for his business and his family, but leaves out that he married her for her money. There are several other little things like that in there, also.
Another thing is with Tonny Alhers. The entire book basically makes the case that Tonny Alhers turned the people living in the secret annex, but in the epilogue, she contradicts herself by suggesting that Tonny's wife did it.
Still, this is a very good and eye-opening book. It shows that there was a lot more issues that went on than is mentioned in the Diary.
I enjoyed it..........2004-09-01
I echo the previous reviews in that I did find the writing to be very dry at times, to the point that it was difficult to get through all but the most interesting parts of this book. But, in saying that, I have to admit that the parts I did find interesting were worth the 4 stars in and of themselves.
In reading the Diary of Anne Frank one of the things that you don't realize (or at least I didn't) is how thoroughly it's been edited. Otto Franks took great liberties in deciding what would and would not be shared with the public and after reading this book those edits, and the truth they hid, really shine through.
More than that, I found that Otto Franks to be as fascinating a person as his daughter (even if he is not as likable) and that fact made this book very enjoyable for me.
Not what I expected.......2004-04-13
I loved the diary of Ann Frank, but this book pales in comparison. I found my mind wondering while reading it. I found it painful to even finish. In my opinion, the author should work on her writing style, keep the reader interested.
