Three Generations of Boring.......2005-12-01

I was told that this book was a courageous tale of 3 generations of a fighting family so I bought it a couple of weeks ago. Let me tell you, it is a yawner.

First of all, the writing is horrible. It is as if my sixth grader wrote it and then gave it to my 4th grader to edit. It is very unclear.

Second, the author, Leon Robinson, doesn't add anything that hasn't already been discussed about the tradition of fighting families. I had to force myself to read it (generally during bathroom breaks).

Anyhow, its poorly written and not well-conceived. But it you like bragging then this book may be for you...

A 3rd Serving of Chicken Soup for the Soul is a collection of heart-warming stories, which is written by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor. All the stories in this book are true stories. Some of the many different subjects in this collection include, love, parenting, teaching and learning, death, and a matter of perspective. There is a subject for everyone to enjoy and come to understand. These books can help you cope with many things because you realize how many people have gone through this also. There is no boring part to it because all the stories are short and to the point. Kenny Loggins said, "I always take Chicken Soup on the road with me. It can turn a blue night alone in a distant hotel into a mini retreat-quick and easy to fix." This statement is true because when you read it in your house or anywhere else it transports you to another place, and puts you in the scene of the action. Anyone who is looking for something enjoyable to read should read this book because there is something for everyone.

Doesn't live up to the name.......1999-09-23

After receiving Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, I read it cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since then, I became a big Chicken Soup fan and bought a few other books. Among them I recommend (other than the above) Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul and the original Chicken Soup book. I feel bad not highly recommending this book either, but I felt utterly disappointed after purchasing this book and really wanted a refund, unfortunately I had spilled a drink on it. It seems as though the publishers were simply trying to push another Chicken Soup book and just slapped a book together using remnant, semi-motivating stories from the editing floor rejects and stories from celebrities that weren't necessarily as inspiring as I would expect. Perhaps if this was my first Chicken soup book, I would have loved it, but it wasn't and I was sorely displeased.

the greatest book ever.......1998-08-31

As I read a third serving of chicken soup for the soul, my heart changed. Each story is touching. some are sad, some are happy, but they are all unforgetable. I believe that reading this book has made me a better person, and I reccomend any of the books in this series to everyone. It will touch your life forever.

What a refreshing book!.......1997-09-29

When they tout this series of Chicken Soup books as "Stories To Open The Heart And Rekindle The Spirit" they are not kidding! I have the first three Servings, and have the fourth on order. I read them cover to cover, laughing, crying, sighing. I can't bookmark any one page because almost every single page is great, and can be related to my life or referred to others to help in their lives. It is a book on life's perspectives... These two men hit the nail on the head everytime with the book's entries. I can read the book cover to cover, and find myself going back a day or two later, and re-reading one or more of the stories, as it relates to my life. I would recommend this book to everyone, young and old alike. It is truly a book, and a series, for everyone!!

A book that keeps on giving........1996-12-23

Each year I look for the perfect gift to give my mother,and each year she tells me my love is enough.My most special gifts are the stories of the lives we live along with our family and friends. Jack Canfield and Mark Hansen have captured feelings and pieces of my own life.What more could a mother want than sharing lifes moments with her child,knowing they will live forever in a book. I am sure whoever reads this book, or other books written by Canfield and Hansen will have to agree. There are stories in each book that hit very close to home or you feel someone has been looking inside your heart. Truly a book that can be read again and again and bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye. 9June98 The CD AUDIO called "A Third Helping of Chicken Soup for the Soul". by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen.

My comments:

I have several normal books of Chicken Soup and I very much enjoy them but this is my first experience of an audio CD with such material. I would definitely make the following suggestions:

1. There should be some way to 'pause' the listening.

2. There should be some way to select particular storys instead of being forced to listen for 70 minutes without any kind of break and being forced to listen to every single story repeated every time you listen to the CD.

3. There should be a 'menu' that initially appears on your screen that allows you to pick the story or storys that you would like to hear again. Included with this menu would be the ability to pause while listening.

In today's world, who can listen for a 70 minute period without interruption? Possibly a hermit only. The phone, the FAX, the toilet etc. all constantly intrude on any 70 minute slice of your life.

Great material but the format of the CD cries out for the above modification. Because of the above omissions, I would highly recommend the book versions far above the CD versions.

Fundamentally sound, but frequently flawed.......2001-02-15

OK, this is a fundamentally sound book. The advice generally makes sense, the pairings are likely to work. But, it is SO poorly edited and proof-read, I can't stand to "read" this book. I'll reference it occasionally, but won't delve into it any farther than I need to in order to answer a quick question.

For example:

Viognier -- it's a white grape not a red one as they claim.

They frequently will list a series of pairings in the ollowing fashion 'pairs well with red wines like x, y, and z, or white wines like p, d, and q' where z may be white or q is red.

Their spelling is frequently awful -- even worse than mine.

Like I said, for a quick question it's fine.

Needs a bit more detail.......2000-11-11

This book is very helpful for the beginner who is trying to get a sense of what food to put with a particular wine. However, it is lacking in some detail about why some wines go well with certain foods. It would be more helpful if it went into the characteristics of certain foods and seasonings and why those pair well with the characteristics of the wines. It is a handy reference though and well worth the price!

Five Stars Plus a Thank You.......2000-07-29

This is the first practical book I have seen that tells you simply and easily which wines go best with which food. The nicest thing about the book is that it is not stuffy. It tells you which wines will go well with things like nachos, Kentucky Fried Chicken as well as elegant foods like Chateaubriand, coq du vin, etc.

Tells you, too, how and where to buy wine....and all the wines are American !

A Good Introduction.......2006-09-27

This book will not make you an expert in wiring together complex layouts with signals, interlocking, block detection and such but it will make you a competent installer of basic model railroad track wiring. That was its purpose and it does a good job of fulfilling its purpose.

After a short introduction explaining how electricity is used by the models, this guide introduces the basic tools, the basic procedures and then goes on to show how these tools and procedures are used on sectional track and then flex track. It starts with a very simple, "oval around a Christmas tree" sort of layout and then builds upon that, adapting and explaining the refinements as it goes along. It introduces such topics as block control, reversing track sections and even provides a brief introduction to digital command and control setups.

If I were to have one complaint, it is that almost everything is explained in terms of Atlas components. This is reasonable in that most beginners use Atlas electrical components (Controller, Selector, Twin, Connector, Switch, etc.). I just which it had spent a little time explaining what the switching inside these components does so that other electrical components could be wired the same way.

People who are interested in 3 rail systems will be disappointed since the coverage is exclusively for twin rails. Still, it is a very effective introduction.

Basic 2 track DC wiring.......2006-01-18

If you're model railroad is 2 track (vs 3) and DC (vs AC), this book covers all the basics that you'll need to wire your layout. If you're looking for 3 track AC wiring advice, look elsewhere

Basic Wiring for Model Railroaders.......2001-01-13

This is an excellent guide for basic wiring schemes with many photos. I was mostly interested in DCC systems and understanding the basics. I had read the Digitrax Big Book of DCC but I was still uncomfortable with the system conversion. This book was very basic but brought all the components together for me to get a grasp of DCC and gave me the confidence to proceed. The photos were very helpful.

A good work which could be better .......2005-05-19

This work competently traces the lives and outlines the thought of major Jewish thinkers from Medieval times. But it seems to me to have what might be called an ' over-liberal bias' and includes at least two people who certainly are not ' major Jewish thinkers'. It also naturally excludes many others who might be said to truly deserve a place here.
A good work which could be better.

Much more than a catalogue!.......2000-12-19

Educated persons will know at least something about such Jewish philosophers as Philo, Maimonides, Spinoza, Martin Buber, and Elie Wiesel. All of them have found their way into most major Western encyclopedias. This book offers much more. Cohn-Sherbok, a well-known writer of things Jewish, is an ordained Reform rabbi, and he naturally, and properly, concentrates on the religious aspects of his subject. Cohn-Sherbook devotes a two-page essay to each of the fifty thinkers included in this mini-encyclopedia. There are no footnotes, but numerous crossreferences. The author's deep involvement in his subject helps the reader apprehend the book as a unified whole. This becomes all the more evident if the essays are read in chronological order, which is easy to do, since the author includes a neat 2000-year chronological table of the names included. We thus get a fascinating view of how the Jewish religious landscape changed under the impact of several catastrophic events, from the Babylonian exile, over the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, to the Nazi Holocaust. The endurance of the Jewish people under such calamities is striking. So is the ability of the thinkers presented here to steer their philosophical and religious reflection into fruitful channels. This implies neither an easy optimism, nor a resigned submission to fate. Rather, we witness here a deep rethinking of the foundations of religion, obviously relevant to Jews and non-Jews alike.
