Book Description
Through biographies of pioneers including Marie Curie, this book investigates the history behind the discovery of radioactivity, its major benefits, drawbacks and problems along the way.
Customer Reviews:
How refreshing...a balanced, nonhysterical treatment........2006-07-11
This a rather sweeping overview of the history of radioactivity from its earliest scientist observers to the current status of nuclear power throughout the world. G.I. Brown is a British scholar, which, as an American reader, I thought brought an element of humor and internationalism to the effort that probably would have been missing had the book been authored by an American. While it's not perfect, I highly recommend this book for those in search of a nuclear history that isn't steeped in politics and ideology, incessant historical second-guessing, or apocalyptic despair. It is a much needed work.

This is the best book a parent could have.......2007-09-21
I was recommended this book from my hospital. I love this book. I look at it every time I questions something about my baby. It has helped me so much. It's my baby bible. I would strongly recommend it to all parents. It has also saved many phone calls to my pediatrician. I now buy it for all my expecting friends.
Must have for new parents-to-be........2007-09-01
Great reference book! Every new parent should have this. It is fairly objective with a smattering of professional opinions. Easy to read. I read it front to back, and now refer to it as a reference for specific questions and situation that arise as my child grows.
Great Go to / Baby Bible .......2007-08-29
Comprehensive, funny and easy to read. I needed it and it was there for me!
Great for Basics on What to Expect.......2007-08-23
Not having much time for extensive research and reading a library of books, I'm enjoying working through this book. It's matter-of-fact, blunt, but funny, too. While I'm taking a laid back and open minded approach to what having 2 new babies will be like (twins), this book is definitely helping to relieve some of my anxiety of the unexpected, too. Is the dad-to-be not reading up too much on what to expect?? I recommend this book. It's easy reading that goes quickly, yet manages to be very informing, too.
terrific resource for first time moms!.......2007-08-17
i discovered this book in the waiting room of my ob/gyn office. i was flipping through it one day while i was waiting for my appointment while i was pregnant with my first child. i immediately went out and bought a copy. this book is a tremendous resource - especially if you are a first time mom. it kept me from calling the pediatrician's office about a dozen times because i could figure out what was going on with my child by reading about symptoms and conditions described in the book. i refer to it all the time. and i have several pregnant girlfriends now - all of whom i've purchased this book for as a gift. i can't endorse it highly enough!

A Must Have for New Parents.......2007-09-30
I used this book all of the time during my son's first year. It answered questions for me right away. I rarely called the the Dr's office. Also, sign up on their website and e-mails with updates will be sent to you.
My "go-to" book for minor baby health crises.......2007-09-22
This is my go-to book for basic health questions about my baby. Unlike a number of other baby books on my shelf, the information is presented in just enough detail to be helpful in a minor crisis (A whole chapter on poop and vomiting? Yay!) Most sections about common symptoms and illnesses are very reassuring, but contain a useful "Red Flags" list immediately following that lets you know when you need to push the speed-dial number for your pediatrician. I find the reference section really helpful, particularly when I don't feel the need to wake my pediatrician at 1A.M. to ask a basic question about medication or illness. The authors do express strong opinions about some controversial issues, like circumcision and vaccination, which will turn some readers off; and I've seen a few parents who susbscribe to the attachment-parenting theory complain that some of the behavioral advice (specifically regarding co-sleeping and sleep training) is harsh or closed-minded. If you have your own strong opinions about these issues, ignore these sections of the book--there's lots of other useful information here.
Helpful for First Time Parents!.......2007-09-13
I received a promotional copy of this book for free from my OB/GYN's office while I was pregnant earlier this year. My husband and I have found it invaluable, especially for those first few weeks after bringing our first baby home! It is well written and easy to understand. We find ourselves referring to this book first when we have any questions, and have found that the baby's pediatrician has agreed with all the advice in here so far! Highly recommended and I'll be giving this as a gift at baby showers from now on.
Excellent Reference.......2007-09-12
This is the main book I reach for when trying to figure out something going on with the baby. It is concise and well written, while funny at the same time. The advice also makes sense; nothing is "over the top" to make you question whether it is reasonable advice to be following. Hey, the author is a Harvard educated pediatrician. That combined with the structure of the book make it a winner.
Great all-inclusive book!.......2007-09-11
One of the best books on baby care. I'd recommend it to all new mothers!

Nice book but not an Encyclopedia.......2005-05-03
This is a nice book. It has a fair number of spices and herbs listed, I would say the ones most commonly used in the American kitchen. It also includes international recipes and even a chapter on Flavorings as listed in the title. Overall a good source of information and a good read. Beware however this is by no means comprehensive, there are other books out there with much more detailed information on spices and hebs, unfortunately I am still searching to find one that I used to own that desrved the title encyclopedia. When I find it I will re-post.
Herb & Spice Heaven.......2002-02-23
Herbs enhance and enliven meals. Herbs are the leaves of fresh or dried plants. Spices are the aromatic parts: buds, fruit, berries, roots or bark. Most spices thrive in tropical regions, while herbs can be grown in your own garden or indoors in a sunny place. Some herbs can also produce spices.
If you think of the Coriander/Cilantro plant, cilantro is the herb and the seeds are known as coriander. This is why this book is so helpful as it explains the plants in detail. I didn't realize the root was also used in Thai curries. A recipe for Guacamole is included on the same two-page spread.
Elizabeth Lambert Ortiz is an authority on herbs and spices and international cuisine. She created this sourcebook in order to guide the reader to information on more than 200 herbs, spices, essences, edible flowers and leaves, aromatics, vinegars, oils, teas, coffees and just about every seasoning a modern cook needs to produce flavorful foods.
With 750 spectacular full-color photographs and 185 recipes you will learn how to create characteristic flavors that define cuisines of the world.

Everything from Agar-Agar to Zahtar.......2001-12-31
If you had this book, you'd know that Agar-Agar is a seaweed and Zahtar is a blend of sumac, roasted sesame seeds, and ground thyme. Encylopedia indeed! I purchased this book to learn about herbs and spices so that I could cook flavorful while cutting salt, fat, mayo, and other bad things in my diet. If you only get one one kitchen reference on this subject, make it this one. I started giving this book as a gift to friends and family and now they're giving it as a gift as well. It's divided into the following sections:
-Introduction
-Kitchen Herbs
-Kitchen Spices
-Flavors of the World (Characteristics of the world's cuisines)
-Vegetable and Fruit Flavorings
-Extracts, Essences, and Sweeteners
-Edible Leaves and Flowers
-Oils, Vinegars, and Dairy Products
-Sauces, Preserves, and Condiments
-Coffee, Tea, and Spiced Drinks

The book I was looking for..........2001-08-12
I brought this book home with me after a trip to England 8 years ago. Now that it is available in North America I can recommend it for anyone wanting to figure out what really grows in an herb garden. I was looking for a book to explain all the herbs I previously had only read about on the menus I was eating from. Full pages are devoted to most of the world's common herbs & spices. The digrams are exceptional for Food ID and each item includes an example recipe, handling, prep, and storage techniques. The more I have learned about cooking, the more details I have found hidden in the pictures and text. It even rivals my best coffee table books!
Everything you could imagine wanting to know about spices.......2001-06-06
For hundreds of spices familiar & unknown, the author gives you history, variations, recipes, tips, oddball facts, and beautiful color pictures. You can cook from it, you can use it as a reference, you can curl up with a cup of tea & browse in it for hours. A fantastic book.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Everything a beginner's guide should be.......2007-08-16
I have not even scratched the surface of this new stumpwork hobby, but I have tried learning a lot of new embroidery techniques over the last 10 years. If I have come away with anything from the experience it's how to spot a good beginner's book:).
Students want to feel encouraged to try. Three things are important:
1. The book must not be so thick that it's overwhelming.
2. Embroidery instructions are better if there are photos and/or illustrations for every step of the process. The higher their quality, the better a newbie will be able to follow and duplicate techniques (hint: look for full color!).
3. Projects should be basic and quick to complete.
Kay Dennis has hit the nail on the head with all of these points. The Beginner's Guide to Stumpwork covers just enough technique to give the reader a feel for the craft, really showing just a few of the most common stitches and their variations to get somebody started stumping and needlelacing. The sample projects are quite simple, even a bit primitive in my opinion, but they are presented perfectly for learning and building confidence.
Once you gain some basic practice from this book, I would recommend moving on to the Complete Book of Stumpwork Embroidery by Jane Nicholas for elegant, inspirational designs and a nice bit of background on the history of stumping.

Beginner's Guide to Stumpwork (Beginner's Guide to Series.......2006-11-04
Beautiful book with great illustrations. Helpful illustrations for those learning or people who already know but want to verify technique. Projects are a more manageable size for beginners or those who just want a dabble into the technique.
Unintimidating Stumpwork and Needlelace.......2002-05-28
I've looked at several other stumpwork and needlelace books and was very intimidated. This book makes these techniques seem doable and achievable by normal people. I haven't done everything from this book by any stretch, but I've done a few bits and pieces and her instructions WORK. And again, her instruction style is very unintimidating. This has to be one of the best places to start for stumpwork.
Book Description
Since 1973, Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletins have offered practical, hands-on instructions designed to help readers master dozens of country living skills quickly and easily. There are now more than 170 titles in this series, and their remarkable popularity reflects the common desire of country and city dwellers alike to cultivate personal independence in everyday life.
Product Description
Parents spend so much time and energy trying to make their children behave, you would think they would have a deliberate, thought-out system for accomplishing this goal. Most parents, however, lament?? that not only do they not have a?? pre-determined plan, but that the "method" most of them use, punishment, doesn't?? seem to do the trick and it is very unpleasant to administer. It seems that the majority of parents simply don't know any other way to manage bad behavior in their children, so they resort to what their parents did with them--traditional punishment. In his groundbreaking new book, Dr. John Maag explains that the problem with punishment is that it simply doesn't work. It is always contingent on a child's bad behavior, it is based on principles of negative reinforcement and it is always reactive--in other words, a recipe for disaster. In its place, Dr. Maag suggests that parents try his method a proactive approach that focuses on emphasizing and encouraging a child's good behavior rather than trying to decrease his bad behavior. In addition, Dr. Maag suggests using such bad behavior as a focal point for determining which behaviors need to be changed. Although this might seem obvious, it s much more complicated than one would expect. Neither radical nor far-fetched, Maag's system, based on traditional applied behavior analysis techniques, is completely sensible and effective. Step-by-step directions, practical examples, fill-in charts and questionnaires show parents how to effectively manage a wide range of problem behaviors in their children, from minor problems to depression and attention deficit disorder (ADD) Maag's method stresses consistency and positive reinforcement that will shape a child's behavior far more profoundly than will punishment. Filling a long-standing need, Parenting Without Punishment will help parents and teachers promote responsible, independent, creative and secure future adults.
Customer Reviews:
Finally! Why time outs don't usually work.......2004-08-07
I learned about this book in a forum on Positive Parenting, and put it on my Amazon wish list. I found it under the Christmas tree when my son was 2 and I've been following the advice in it ever since.
Large stretches of this book apply to older children, so I don't feel qualified to comment on those subjects yet (my son is 3 1/2). But the crux of the book is how to identify and isolate a behavior that you want to change. It is such a basic concept and yet so many parenting books fail to explain this. Rather than label your child as "sloppy," identify what you specifically have a problem with (e.g. leaving clothes on the floor). Then you can work with the child to change the behavior. A variety of methods are suggested. These are contrasted against punitive methods that often fail to do much more than demand immediate attention and often lead to children attempting to subvert the rules without understanding them.
Maag's discussion about "time outs," the most often suggested and most often misused form of discipline these days, is exceptional. When I read this part of the book, I immediately lost patience for all the experts and unsolicited advice-givers who seem to gush about this form of discipline. The purpose of the "time out," according to Maag, is to remove a child from a situation where he/she is getting negative attention. Used as a punishment, time outs do not end the misbehavior or address the underlying causes of the misbehavior. If a child is doing something just for the negative attention, removing the child to a new environment or simply removing your attention will end the cycle. Parents who angrily walk their kids to a chair in the corner whenever the child blows milk bubbles are giving the child the attention he craves.
Because so much of misbehavior is not due to a child trying to get negative attention, Maag contends that time outs are of limited utility. Their use as punishments do not help a child develop self control and may instead perpetuate attempts by the child to get away with things known to be wrong.
The actual problem-solving advice given by Maag centers on identifying a problem behavior, discussing your expectations with the child, coming to an agreement, and rewarding progress toward ending the behavior. Therefore, it does not apply to babies or toddlers who are too young to understand the consequences of their actions. It may sound a little to good to be true, and it probably is for people who don't want to put the time or effort into making gradual (and hopefully permanent) changes in a child's behavior. However, I've put the author's philosophy into practice and have been much more relaxed about parenting ever since. I also have a very well-behaved child and can spend quality time with him rather than fighting him at every step.
A practical guide for changing a parent's behavior........2001-09-26
:
I am surprised that the principles in the book are not more commonly used by educators. Clear and practical information and guidelines cover every page.
:
Many of the behavioral modifications recommended by Dr. Maag don't just work in our interaction with our kids, they also work quite well with adults.
:
Probably the most interesting benefit I got from the book has been the opportunity to alter my own behavior, which, in turn, made a world of difference in helping our daughter to alter hers.
:
Highly recommended reading for parents, educators and for anyone looking to find different, more effective ways of dealing with others and with our own imprinted habits. An open mind is required for the readers of this book to gain any noticeable benefit.
A common-sense approach that really works..........2001-01-19
"Parenting bookshelves typically contain dozens of books offering endless techniques for behavior modification. This book may be the one that will help parents sort out the worthwhile from the drivel. John Maag, PhD (Univ. of Nebraska) offers a strict and compassionate approach to behavior modification, arguing that punishment per se is almost never effective. The trouble is that we expect the good and punish the bad and this only leads to confrontation. Maag shows us how to use reinforcers, star charts, time outs and contracts, concluding that self-monitoring by kids leads to self-control. Finally, he 1ooks at ADD and depression as behavior problems that parents can deal with rather than as psychiatric labels attached to kids. Maag brings years of working with exasperated parents to his work. Refreshingly full of common sense and well worth reading." -- Library Journal
If you want a good book on parenting, this is it!.......1996-11-19
Even though there are one million books on parenting, very few of them are useful and very few provide information that is actually helpful. This book is different; provides really sensible information. Life with my children has actually improved since I've applied the knowledge I received from this book. What a relief to finally have a book that deals directly with the ins and outs of punishment and offers a better way of disciplining children other than grounding them

A book filled with bias and errors.......2002-10-09
In 1971 when Birmingham (who is not Jewish himself) released this book, the Foundation For The Advancement of Sephardic Studies and Culture in New York City put out four formal reviews on Stephen Birmingham's book. The reviews were by people from the academic community WITHIN the very community he wrote about.
The Foundation For The Advancement of Sephardic Studies and Culture wrote: "...Mr. Birmingham addressed a gathering on October 10th, 1968 at Shearith Israel [the very congregation he writes about in his book], Mr. Louis N. Levy, the president of the Foundation, asked Mr. Birmingham whether he proposed to write on the Balkan Sephardim. For some reason the audience burst into laughter and the answer was not heard."
One of the reviews was the Rabbi of the very congregation the book is based on "Marc Angel". He wrote: "Birmingham is so eager to show that the "Grandees" are aloof and snobby, that he ignores reality. He interprets things as he wants them to be, not as they are." Rabbi Angel also wrote: "His book is plagued with factual inaccuracies and poor historical perspectives. Unfortunately, many Jews and non-Jews are reading the book and are having their opinions molded by it because they know little or nothing about Sephardim."
The well-respected Sephardic scholar David N. Barocas wrote of the Grandees: "To rely on hearsay information, or to select at random passages from books and then try to weave them into the fabric of one's text or report constitutes in the final analysis a combination of misstatements, incomplete truths and factual omissions tending to present a perverted opinion of an innocent people."
There are many good books out there which are acurate, unfortunatly this is not one of them. It was written by an outsider of the community. It is biased, and does give a good example of the Sephardic community.
fascinating picture of a closed society.......1999-10-16
This book does what good histories should do, open up doors to inaccessible places. Well written and incisive, it tracks a part of our history not well known. Especially fascinating were the accounts of how the first 44 came to America, and the story of the Civil War admiral. I'll read more of his books.
