This diary provides a splendsid view of the mindset of a WW I naval officer born of soon to fade social nobility. The book reveals a brave submarine officer dealing with undersea warfare while working with men of perceived lower social status. Years of war begin to change the man's thinking. Entwined thoughout is a love story fated to lose. Unusual book and definitely recommended

I stumbled across this book by pure chance, like all the books in my collection that I have most enjoyed. The book has a lot of technical details which can be skipped over, however the love story that he weaves in and out amidst the details and excitement of being in a U-boat under attack make this book very much worth the read. Especially noteworthy is the letter that his girlfriend writes to him. The details in it are fantastic to the point of stirring suspicion in the reader as to the veracity of its contents.All in all a very well written and moving narrative.

This was a good read. It had a different format than most u-boat books I have read. I don't know if it is a work of fiction or fact. This is as much psychological as action. It makes it believable, however, in that this author has very human ups and downs and has unrequited love. It's a good book and I'm glad to have it in my collection.

He was like a log and absolutely incapable of rendering me any assistance, though he did open his eyes and mutter once or twice as I lifted him up, trunk first and then his legs. He stank of spirits and I hated touching him. Lord! what a truly hoggish man he is; yet I cannot help envying him his oblivion to these surroundings.

A fine book for people who want to get a quick start at an ab workout. The title is a bit embarassing if you're the kind of person whos abs betray an ADD approach to exercise, but the book is small and unobtrusive enough to be easily hidden from nagging girlfriends.

You really do need only three minutes per day to get the abs of your dreams. These workouts are so tough, it's like cramming 500 sit-ups into three minutes.
INCREDIBLE WORKOUT!!!!!.......2007-03-16
Don't get discouraged just by the title. Usually when you see "3 minutes" for an entire workout you think its a scam. It is not. This book is great. Kurt teaches you about the abdominals and importance of them. He also informs you what sections you will be strenghening. The program is nuts! For three days you work different parts of your abs: obliques, lower abs and upper abs. Whats convenient is the exercises are only 3 minutes. But also they work. You can feel the excruciating burn in your abs. The program is very challenging. Before I was doing 500 situps after every workout. After I do the ab workout that Kurt offers in this book I feel like I just completed 500 situps or more. I've only been doing this for a week but I will say this is honestly the bast ab workout ever. And if you diet, workout, do cardio, and do this simple 3 minute routine you'll get the results you want.

When performed properly, the excercises deeply and thoroughly work each of these areas. I love this book. Every time I'm looking for a muffin recipe this is my first place to look. It offers variations on many recipes. It has a section for biscuits, quick breads, scones and coffe cakes as well. Wonderfull recipes.

This is the story of one man's struggle to develop the British War Dog School. Richardson began experimenting with military and police dogs in 1898, and in 1910 began petitioning for a British military dog program. He finally received official approval with support of officers who were unofficially, and successfully, using his dogs in the field. Over 2000 dogs were trained and sent to the front to work as Red Cross dogs, messengers, sentries and patrol dogs - the lives saved were estimated in thousands. Cummins recounts not only Richardson's struggle, but also the history of war dogs through the ages.

Working Airedale Terriers.......2006-02-07
Working Airedale Terriers by Brian Cummins is one of those books which have become somewhat popular in the recent past because interest in this breed as a real working dog is growing. Mr.Cummins does a bit of research on the Airedale as a working dog in the past but offers little that is current. The book is full of old stories, primarily from hunters of various types of game. There is limited information on the breeds history
as a war dog from the kennels established in England by Col Richardson and the use of the dogs in Russia up to WWI. He does mention that the Europeans used the breed during this same period
as "sanitary" dogs (dogs trained to locate and alert on wounded soldiers in the aftermath of combat). He does add his personal experiences of his family pets.
There is however a noticeable absence of current information of the Airedale as a working dog. The author does not cover the breed in Germany where it is still used as a working police service dog which is bred in police kennels but he does give limited space to the dogs' use in the sport of Schutzhund.Cummins does not mention the dog being used by game wardens in Georgia or as police patrol and detection dogs in Alabama and Colorado.
The book falls short of it's title in being currently informative
and most of the stories are readily available in the books written by Richardson, Palmer and others; men who actually trained and worked their Airedales.

Most informative book, not only in relation to Airedales as a breed, but also the history of this lion hearted and highly intelligent member of the canine family. This book covers the breeds working and hunting history, and should be in every law enforcement dog trainers library.I include this book as one of my cherished possessions.

Having read this book more than once, I can not recomend "The Working Airedale" highly enough. Well written in an entertaining, informative style with many rare pictures. To me, this book is a must for all those interested in the world of dogs as well as fans of Airedales and terriers.

What a great resource for families...especially in this "gotta do everything" world we live in. Practical and realistic advice, funny stories and fabulous family night/teaching moment ideas. If that weren't enough, there are even recipes for busy families at the back! Would highly recommend it to anyone with a young family.
The Best Parenting Book Ever!.......2006-01-10
This book is phenomenal! I love how the author takes a subject, puts it into realistic life circumstances, and gives simple yet effective ideas, along with how to make those ideas work. There are hundreds of well thought out ideas for almost every circumstance you can imagine, and she's used them all and shares her stories for true-to-life illustration. I find myself saying "Yes! That's exactly how I feel. What a great idea." I've tried some of the author's ideas and have loved how they've worked for my family. I've read other books and listened to tapes. But, none of them have really hit the spot like this one. Some are too rigid, some too "modern", and some just have inconsistent reasoning for disciplining little children. Tamara Fackrell strikes a perfect balance and I feel I can completely trust her ideas and opinions because she's very honest and realistic. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is a parent of small children.

I absolutely loved this book. It has great ideas to help teach your children important values (and don't cost a lot either). She talks about principles and then gives examples and quotes from various people and experiences. Lost Bird - A lesson in Navajo Culture.......2005-02-15
I look through thousands of books a year as a reseller, but I read about 2 books a year. This one got my attention because I have a son who is 1/2 Navajo. His mother suffered the same sort of fate as Yvette. "voluntarily" seperated from brothers and sisters at the age of 5, sent to Utah, a mom she has not met, alcohol, violence etc etc etc . . .
This book does a very good job of relating what rez life is really like, and gives a good insight into Navajo culture.
I am a classically stoic, but I had tears in my eyes all the way through this book. I encourage anyone who is interested in the journey of the Navajo to spend some time on the reservation. Drive around, meet the people. Western culture has a lot to learn from this society.
Read Ward Churchill's writings too, don't judge him by what the media has said about him.

Looking For Lost Bird is a true story that is disturbing yet compelling. A Native American Navajo Indian woman gives birth on her reservation home in Arizona to twins, a girl and a boy. During their infancy, both children get sick. The mother takes the children to the nearest local hospital for a diagnosis.
Hospital staff members instruct her that they will need to keep the two children over night for observations. When the mother returns the next day, the children are gone. The hospital has no record that they were ever admitted.
The kidnapped infant children are each adopted in Florida by two different families. One of the families is a young Jewish couple that lives in a New York City suburb. Looking for Lost Bird is the story of the Navajo girl, Yvette Melanson, who is raised in that Jewish household.
As an adult, Melanson discovers her Navajo origins and searches for her family roots. She finds her family (minus her mother, who died of a broken heart grieving for two lost children) still living on the Navajo reservation in which she was born. At the age of forty-three, Melanson decides first to visit her birth family in Arizona, then to move there permanently with her husband and two children.
While adjusting to the reservation, Melanson learns and begins practicing the religion, culture, and way of life of her birth family. In this process, she abandons many of the Jewish cultural practices (but not necessarily Jewish values) in which she was raised.
Melanson's Jewish parents (particularly her mother) provide a loving and caring environment for their daughter. In Yvette's recollection of how she was raised, their warts do surface, particularly the shortcomings of her father. After her mother becomes ill and eventually dies during her teen years, the father changes into a different, less appealing character.
Melanson never reveals whether her Jewish parents knew about her Navajo origins. The reader is left to speculate whether the knowledge, if known by her Jewish parents that she was stolen from a Native American Indian family would have impacted their decision to adopt.
What is surprising in the telling of this life story is the absence of any form of anti-Semitism by the author. When Melanson writes critically about her mother and father, she writes about them as individuals. She does not associate her criticism of them with Judaism as a faith tradition.
On the reservation, when she begins taking on Native American Indian ways, Melanson naturally compares Navajo culture to Judaism. In this comparison, Melanson writes with respect, affection, and even admiration about the religious tradition in which she was raised.
Melanson tells her life story (with the help of Claire Safron) with compassion, humor, and eloquence.
I recently led a book club at my synagogue. A member of the club recommended that I read Looking for Lost Bird. After reading it, we immediately decided to include Looking for Lost Bird one of our featured selections. The book provides a great opportunity to learn about Navajo culture and to see how it compares to Judaism as a religious tradition. The book is also a true gift for adopted individuals, particularly native American Indians, seeking to uncover their past.

Wonderful story about loved ones being reunited!.......2001-05-17
Like many of the readers I couldn't put the book down until I read it from cover to cover. While reading the story I found out these people were my extended family! I know everyone mentioned in the book. As a youngster I remember the crusade of Aunt Desbah, Uncle John and others in finding the twins who were stolen as babies. I wept at the end when Yvette participated in the holy Hozhoji ceremony to be reunited with her birth place, family, culture, and environment. Very moving!
Aunt Betty, Yvette's biological mother lived a very brave life as she longed and searched everyday of her life wanting to be reunited with her twins. May God bless her soul.
