What's It All About, Alfie? describes the Elser's combat experiences as a Forward Air Controller in Vietnam in 1967-68. It describes the intense battles he took part in and the fear, terror, elation, joy, sadness, and guilt he experienced. In the last part of the book he shows how these emotions affected his life and how he's dealt with them and the conflicting emotions he still feels. Elser writes the book to Al, his son, because he asked, "What did you do in the war?" and because he's been a key to the author's emotional recovery.

A gripping memoir of a Vietnam Forward Air Controller (FAC) that dramatically describes what it's like to fly low and slow over the jungle in a light plane that's vulnerable to fire from anything bigger than a slingshot. Elser, a highly decorated pilot, tells the story without ever bragging. Addressed to his son, the memoir goes on to tell what happens later in life, when combat becomes a frightening memory tinged with guilt and remorse. How Elser resolves the conflicts and describes "what's it all about" is a memorable and worthwhile read.

Everything you needed to know about raising your own animals.......2007-03-31

This is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject of raising your own livestock. The author not only put great information into the book, he also wrote it by telling stories that helped me to better understand and retain the information. I bought the book to learn more about raising a few cattle for both milk and beef, but after reading about other livestock, my wife and I are looking forward to raising a few other types. It even tought us how to save money on feed by giving recipes and directions for getting your animals feed from nature. A must have book if you want to raise your own poultry, or livestock.

#1 goes into breeds, #2 goes into needs, #3 goes into purchasing AND how to CHOOSE healthy animals, #4 how to house and care for them!! Everything! I am sure there is more to each animal, but this is THE best intro book! I am so happy with my nrew load of reading materials!! I cant wait to get this all started!!

Anyone who would like to put a few animals in the backyard for eggs or meat or milk or everything altogether, will save hundreds of headaches, and probably hundreds of dollars, by buying this book and taking Steven Thomas's suggestions seriously. There are now dozens of these kinds of books out there, and I own a number of them (including "Barnyard In Your Backyard" which is nowhere near as good as this) but none of them comes close to "Backyard Livestock" for practicality of advice, conciseness of expression, and comprehensiveness. I have sheep, chicken, etc., and this has been far more reliable than any competing manuals that I own or know of. You can't not get it! It's indispensable.

This book was very beneficial in all aspects of raising small-farm animals. Great reference manual for beginners. I certainly listed this book in the resources directory of my new title, Farm Animals: Your Guide to Raising Livestock, because I felt it would be an awesome addition to my own farm related books!

Insightful and Practical.......2004-08-18

As a professional that has spent a number of years working with young adults, I found Elligan's work to be especially helpful. His well-researched model establishes a necessary bridge between practitioners, parents, and young adults. He crafts a truly insightful means of using rap texts to better understand the perspectives of young adults- without being verbose or convoluted. While I'm always a bit skeptical of those who claim to understand both the esoteric language of the academy and the enigmatic discourse of young adults, it is clear that Elligan has a sturdy grasp of each. Even more satisfying, however are the very useful prompts included in the book. These will certainly come in handy for many that wish to use pieces of Elligan's model in their own work. If you work or live with young adults, this book must be in your library.

Excellent Resource!!!!.......2004-07-18

As a student of psychology I find this book unique and a great contribution to my studies. Dr Elligan outlines the utility of using rap music to help young people cope and thrive in their environment. Similar to other forms of therapy like music and art therapy I feel better informed about how I may want to integrate this approach with future clients. It's well written with many great case studies that illustrate the use of rap therapy. Well done.

Great!!!Must Read, Parents, Students, Therapists.......2004-07-13

This is a must read for parents, students, and therapists who want to understand and reach youth who like rap music. Dr Elligan outlines a step by step approach on how to use positive rap music and hip hop as a way to motivate and communicate with youth. I wasn't such a fan of rap music but the book offers poignant stories of youth struggles, culture, and triumph. I especially think students of psychology and social work will find this book helpful.

This book is great for anyone who just wants to learn of the culture of Jesus' world. It is easy to read and the illustrations are accurate of what it would have been like. However, the illustrations are not high quality, just sketches of sorts but still gives a good picture of the time period.

For anyone who just wants to learn a little more of Jesus' world, this book is great!

The Author's Security Detail.......2007-10-03

More fascinating to me than anything in the book, was the following incident. Mr. DeVos arrived at my home on a quiet street to submit to an author interview while he was on a book tour. Seconds before he arrived, two black SUVs pulled up in front of my house and blockaded the street and set up surveillance, communicating by wireless devices, presumably to others not in view. When I asked Mr. DeVos how his humble book warranted such a fanfare, he replied that with all the disgruntled former Amway dealers out there, he had reason to believe he might be in danger.

Just proves anyone can write a book if they have money........2006-11-02

This book is nothing more than statements about how someone must work hard to become successful, written by someone who was basically handed their massive inheritance by their father. DeVos writes that he worked in many jobs at Amway, but there is no question that had he not been the son of the co-founder, he certainly would not have risen to the top of the management food chain at that company. Don't buy this book -- buy something written by someone who got there through hard work, intelligence, and skill... not some book on how to be successful written by someone born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Says one thing does another.......2006-03-05

Kind of preachy book with a lot of ego thrown in for good measure. The message is that good people prosper (implying bad people don't).

This man inherited his billions from his dad, the founder of Amway. He didn't get rich living a Christian life full of values - he inherited his position. He talks about values in this book but in real life blatently downsized almost a thousand jobs from his home town to China.

He is very motivational and I will give him credit for that. However, his real life seems to completely contradict what this book says about the connection between values and business.

A Company of Paradoxes.......2002-07-14

No one denies Dick DeVos is a great seller of soap or would question his right to do so. The book presents us with a paradox, however. Dick would have us believe Amway salesmen aren't like other salesmen: they don't bear false witness, they are consistent in word and deed, treat others according to the golden rule, are humble, courageous, disciplined, and stand for freedom. You have to decide if he is deceiving you or not. If he is, then Amway's approach is deceptive and sales practices based on this deceptive doctrine are deceptive. If he is not, then he is violating the constitutional rights of the sales force. They have the right of freedom of speech, an implied right of privacy, freedom of religion or lack of it; in short, the right to make their own choices about how to live and feel and think without Amway telling them how they better do it. Moreover, even in Dick's own religion, he is paradoxical. The path of spirituality has never been through riches.

Should be required reading!.......1999-11-03

DeVos inspires us to take charge of our lives, to live it to the fullest. Outlines principals and values we all should be living by. If we all did, this world would be a better place to live and work.

Before I read this I was under the impression that Jimmy Shand was a shy and retiring man, however it seems that his love of motorbikes was just as passionate as his love of music.

Scottish Country Dance music was my "bread and butter" as a child and this booked hightened that for me.

The end of the Cold War seems to have persuaded some that the ideas of classical liberalism had won, that history had somehow come to an end, that freedom had proven its superiority beyond argument.
