    Book Description

I was to go a long way, to India, probably for years. When I brought the news to our little cottage in the remote Berkshire village, I found my love, five months pregnant, standing at the kitchen sink, and she could not hold back her tears. So it was in 1943 that Peter Kingsford set out on the great adventure that took him to Pachmarhi, set on a beautiful plateau in central India, where he did a stint of gruelling work in the Army Education Corps, later moving to the political hotbed of Malaya as the war ended. How did Lieutenant Kingsford, with his LSE degree, a battery of left-wing views and a copy of Soviet War News tucked under his arm, approach his task? How did this abstemious and gifted housekeeper's son view his fellow officers and the people of occupied India? Dr Kingsford's story is one of work well done, of dedication and self-motivation. It's about the spread of new ideas, of accepting orders rather than the order, and hope for a better future. Should we have been in India at all? Read this searching and sensitive account of imperialism in action and discover for yourself.

Stephenson was known as the 'Father of British Railways'. He did not know how to read until he was 18 years old!

The fools! Those that require empirical proof that reflexogy exists DON'T deserve healing. I've used Mildred Carter's books for more than 25 years, since my teens. I've experienced it work on myself, and others, time and time and time and time again. That's my evidence! References? Sources? Clearly, you must first assuage the ghost that haunts your mind that reflexogy is a con. Surely those that gave it 1 star moonlight for the American Skeptical Society. Twenty years ago I stopped - cold - a cluster migraine headache, the type that makes you go blind in one eye and suffer intolerable cranial pounding for about five hours. And it was happening to me! Extra-strength Tylenol wouldn't even touch it! Rubbed out the pancreatic reflex on the foot. Another time, a woman I worked with bitterly complained of frontal lobe and left hemisphere headaches: I said rub deeply the webbing between the thumb and the forefinger of the left hand. (I've seen this work repeatedly with a dozen people.) Yelping, she did so, diligently. The headache eased off within minutes. And that's just the iceberg's tip. Anything from Mildred, even if it sounds goofy, is worth a try. (There was a time when rubbing my foot soundly patently stupid.) May the disbelievers continue to suffer; I prefer relief.

1 out of 5 stars Nuggets not worth the price.......2004-11-13

There were nuggets of good information in Ms Carter's book, however, it is not a reference I would recommend. Her style of writing is rambling and disorganized. Most of the book consisted of Ms Carter crowing about her miraculous cures of thousands rather than a scientific, nuts and bolts approach to reflexology. Some of her 'facts' were false and patently ridiculous. Her sources were not well documented, preventing discerning readers from checking the facts or doing further research.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative reference.......2001-12-31

I find Body Reflexology to be very useful in my massage practice. The language and concepts are plain and easily understood. The case histories are extremely interesting. An excellent reference for anyone curious about how reflexology works all over the body, not just hands or feet.

                      5 out of 5 stars I feel great!.......2000-02-11

This is a great book if you have a desire to help yourself feel better. I have ordered about 15 copies in the last 6 months for family members and friends. When someone tells me they have pains I tell them how to relieve it. At first they think I'm nuts. Then they do what I tell them and when the pain goes away they want a copy. I have enjoyed the practice of making myself feel better and you will too with this book. Enjoy the book and the good health that goes with it. To your health. Judy

                                        Book Description

Star Palate is a collection of treasured recipes from some of the most noted and beloved celebrities of our time. The 80 recipes are personal and family favorites, shared by stars from all walks of life, from pop culture and music to sports, business, and the food world.

Ever wonder what Pierce Brosnan's favorite dish is? Or what Dr. Phil cooks at home? Everybody loves Raymond, but what dessert does Ray Romano love? Which dish does Jay Leno crave after the Tonight Show? Star Palate brings these cherished recipes to your own kitchen, and does it for a great cause.

Tami Agassi was a 30-year-old breast cancer survivor when she dreamed up Star Palate as a way to promote awareness of breast and ovarian cancer and to raise funds to fight for a cure. It's a cause that is close to the hearts of many celebrities, and before long, recipes and stories were coming in from stars of all kinds.

Tami teamed up with Kathy Casey, a gifted chef, food writer, and owner of Kathy Casey Food Studios in Seattle, and the result is a first-class cookbook that is easy to use in your home kitchen. Culinary stars rallied to the cause as well, giving Star Palate further splendor with recipes from world-famous chefs such as Emeril Lagasse and Iron Chef Morimoto.

With breathtaking photography, delicious recipes, and a personal touch from your favorite stars, this book has a lot to offer, and by purchasing Star Palate you are helping to give something priceless to women around the world. The proceeds from the sale of this book directly benefit research for the fight against two of the most dangerous cancers that affect women today. Half of the funds are dedicated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in New York, and half to the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research in Seattle.

So roll up your sleeves and get cooking. It will make you feel like a star, and women everywhere will win.

5 out of 5 stars Good Food and Two Great Causes.......2005-12-18

I've tried many of the recipes and they have come out very well so far. My favorites are the shepherd's pie, watermelon salad with fennel and the Mandarin Star martini. The proceeds from this book benefit ovarian and breast cancer research and that alone makes this cook book one of my all time favorites. Add that to the ease and great taste of the recipes and you have a true gem.
The recipes are easy to follow and the items come out true to the photos.

Pour yourself a Mandarin Star martini and get cooking today.

I am truly disappointed in this book. I bought it because of all the positive reviews. However, after paging through, I see no conenction to the celebrities. The food was so-so and I was wondering if the authors really tested the recipes. I am most disappointed that there are so many bad reviews of this cookbook.

I learned about Star Palate when it won an honorable mention in the 2005 Independent Publishers Awards this year, noted for it's great images and great cause. The recipes are equally impressive. The book is filled with diverse meals that are fun and favorable.

This book is a joy to own. There are original and inventive menu ideas throughout this beautiful book - enough to host a great dinner party. The cause is near to my heart and I'm glad to be able to support cancer research in such a fun way. It makes a wonderful and touching gift for the survivors and/or caregivers in your life. Kudos to the organizers and editors of this great book.

Innovative ideas for creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces fill this fantastic new book that contains detailed instructions for making each of the 28 wound, twisted, coiled, glued, and trapped wire and fiber beads. Crafters learn to create "wibers" by combining fibers such as cotton embroidery floss and hand-dyed silk threads with a wide variety of thin gauge wires. These "wibers" can then be used to create simple beads and jewelry. Additionally, photos of jewelry pieces are featured to illustrate how easy it is to design beautiful and stunning jewelry with these self-crafted beads.

The authors of this book are way too perky. Perky to the point of annoyance. They tell you in a happy way with cute little poems just how wonderful fresh fruits and vegies are......and even better whole grains! Actually diet plan seems very sound and healthy, but after reading the book you feel like you've just been to a Girl Scout meeting in Stepford. And no matter how many times I read the poem about fresh fruits, I still want chocolate cake!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Diet on Earth.......2005-01-27

When I first saw the title of this book, my immediate response was, "Yea, right!" I was in no mood for any more "way out" diet books with miraculous cures. I wanted something I could live with for the rest of my life. I've been overweight for a long time and have failed at every other diet. Now, despite initial cynicism, I'm a total fan, and who wouldn't be if this happened to them?

Blood Pressure way down; meds cut in half

Eating great food and feeling satiated

I like the way the authors have presented their material. It's upbeat and has great recipes--really easy and good. I've highlighted the book like some people highlight their Bible, and shared the good news with friends. Even my brother-in-law (a scientist and a health nut) has been converted. I feel better than ever, and am taking great pride in preparing these wonderful, healthy foods. I'm a total convert. For me, this is the best diet on earth.

1 out of 5 stars Lotsa paper, little information.......2004-06-26

Taking way more paper than needed to convey their information, the authors do a poor job of describing the way of eating they propose. They leave too many questions unanswered (how much water is recommended, role of legumes in the diet, role of vitamin supplements, use of substitute sweeteners, use of substitute fats, etc.). Their too-drippingly-cute-for-words poems rapidly become skip-overs in the reading (as is much of the other content) as one searches for the diet guidelines proposed (which are never conveniently summarized). The gist? Essentially the food pyramid with more fruits and vegetables (five servings of each instead of 5 total). Unless you really prefer to have someone speak to you as if you're in the fourth grade, I recommend conducting an Amazon search on the DASH diet and trying another book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and easy to follow!.......2004-04-23

The authors of this book are so down to earth and make the "diet" easy to follow and understand. This isn't really a diet per se, it is a guide of how EVERYONE should be eating. They compare this diet with the other popular ones out there but they do it in a constructive way. They are very motivating and this "diet" has helped me lower my blood pressure, lose weight and feel better! I read this along with Thomas Moore's "The DASH Diet for Hypertension" which talks more about hypertension and the science behind the diet, and both of these helped me understand more about how we should all be eating for a healthier well-being.

5 out of 5 stars Really is the best diet on earth!.......2003-11-14

I bought this book for my father, and following the DASH diet lowered his blood pressure in 2 weeks. There are a couple books out there on the topic, but this particular one is easy to follow and perfect for someone who is not accustomed to healthy eating patterns, but wants to start. Very introductory and very effective.

I got this book as a gift from my best friend - who's been a "health nut" for years. I'm just the opposite! This book really was an eye-opener for me though in many ways. It's shocking what gets put on and into our food. I'd never really thought about it much before. Anyway, I've made some of the recipes and they came out great, I especially recommend the seitan fajitas and the lasagna - really easy to prepare. I learned more from this book than I thought I would. I only wish it had color photographs.

It's strange to think of a health/nutrition/cookbook as a "page-turner", but this one is! I literally couldn't put it down. It's packed with up-to-date information on organics, factory farming, genetic engineering of food - essentially everything you need to know about food today. It was really fascinating and written in an easy to read, sometimes humorous style. I now know what to buy and what to avoid - at the grocery store. I highly recommend this book.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars The only diet/health book you'll need.......2003-10-18

I've been through a lot of different diet and health books but always felt like something was missing; none of them really gave me a complete picture of what it means to eat healthfully. After reading The Best of All Worlds I know what a healthy eating style is for me. I liked that the author didn't preach but just presented the facts in a down to earth, sometimes humorous style and made a complex topic easy to grasp. There are a lot of factors affecting our food in modern times, such as pesticides, irradiation, and genetic engineering, which are covered in just the right amount of detail. Whether you've been an avid follower of health or diet trends for a long time or are a junk food addict who's just starting to think about the quality of food you eat, you can benefit from reading The Best of All Worlds. I've tried several of the recipes so far, and they've all come out delicious and were easy enough to make. I really liked the fact that, even though they are vegetarian, most of them can also be made with meat if you desire and the author doesn't make you feel guilty if you aren't a vegetarian. I felt very empowered after reading this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who eats!

I bought this book after seeing one of Khakhar's paintings at the Tate in London. The great thing about the book are the beautiful color plates of the artist's work. Timothy Hyman's long biographical essay is very informative, but hardly a definitive biography of Mr. Khakhar. But it does give some insight into the humor and the emotion of the vibrant and shockingly colorful paintings. It also serves as a decent introduction not only to the artist's work, but also to the cultural and artistic life of modern India. This would be a nice gift for any lover of modern art or anyone interested in India, for that matter. Gay men would especially appreciate this book, I think, as Khakhar "came out" in middle age (after the death of his mother) and many of his works are blissfully homoerotic. But regardless of one's sexual orientation, this book would be a beautiful addition to any library of art books.

5 out of 5 stars Decent account of an outstanding artist.......2001-08-22

There are hardly any artists painting today who have the strength of technique and breadth of vision that Bhupen Khakhar enjoy. Despite being partly recognised in Britain (the BBC commisioned him to paint Salman Rushdie's portrait - a work called "The Moor", the Tate have examples of his work, and he has had gallery shows in the Cork Street area) he remains an artist whose works have ben very different to access. Timothy Hyman, a personal friend of Khakhar's and an artist himself, does everyone interested in painting an incredibly valuable service by making available a book which includes a history, an intelligent discussion, and lavish illustrations of the relevant part of Khakhar's work. For Bhupen Khakhar's work only became outstanding when he began to make reference to his homosexuality in his 50s and as he acknowledged it and as he continues to discuss it. In India homosexulaity is illegal and despite Bombay's (and nearby Baroda - Khakhar's home) position as epicentre of liberal, Western-orientated, gay friendly India any Indian of Khakhar's generation was bound to suffer even worse torment than their Western equivalents. But rather than using this torture to produce a teriffying vision of the world as meat (a la Bacon) he celebrates it. He has been called the Indian Hockney, but the innate spirituality which saturates the Indian creative arts - as, for example that very diiferent Indian artist whose work is so adored in the West, Anish Kapoor - raises Kharkhar's work to another level making it work for all time. Khakhar's work never suffers so unduly from its innate beauty as Hockney's work can suffer and the end is a joyous celebration, an uplifting experience of successful synthesis colour, form, and subject never bogged down by 20th century Western criticism. By not treating Khakhar's work with the respect we give to Hockney and Freud we deny ourselves the opportunity to chart the vision of an artist as great as Freud, with as great a faith in art, but with an outlook that is fundamentally humane. A codicil: Khakhar must be ranked close to the top of contemporary figurative watercolourists, higher than Dumas and certainly Fischl. As an oil painter he is perhaps inferior to Freud but to no one else.

                                                        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful glimpse at a fascinating artist.......1998-11-03

This is a beautifully written book about a wonderful contemporary painter who bridges East and West. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in modern art, the artistic process or Indian art and culture.

The late Bhupen Khakhar was, in my opinion, one of the great artists of the final years of 20th Century. In Timothy Hyman's overview of his life and career, it states that although Khakhar made no money from his play, MAUJILA MANILAL, he wrote and produced it because he felt he had to. I really didn't expect Khakhar to be much of a writer. (I've read Picasso's attempt at playwriting.) I was really surprised and delighted by the play, despite parts of it being incomprehensible without a glossary [more on that later]. The play shows the same zany sensibility that animates Khakhar's artwork. Khakhar also has a sense of dramatic construction that is almost unknown among novice playwrights. (Surely he had written other plays before that I just don't know about.) MAUJILA MANILAL is a comedy about a middle-aged bachelor who seduces two married women, although the protagonist is the husband of one of the women. There is an off-the-wall sense of humor combined with a spiritual sensibility and a rich sense of irony. I'd love to see the play produced, but the translation (by Bini Srinivasan) still needs a great deal of work. Also included in the volume are four of Khakhar's short stories, which deal mostly with the lives of the Indian petit bourgeois. I found the stories really interesting. Maganbhai's Glue (translated by Naushil Mehta) is a really funny comedy with a rather provocative twist at the end. Pages From a Diary (translated by Ganesh Devy) is interesting in its depiction of an unspoken homosexual courtship. Both Vadki (translated by Naushil Mehta) and Phoren Soap (translated by Ganesh Devy and Naushil Mehta) deal with the effects of a mundane object upon a married couple and a community. All of the stories have a Chekhovian sense of irony. This book is well worth having, if for nothing else, the amusing black-and-white illustrations by Khakhar. The only really first rate translation was Phoren Soap. There is a lot of awkwardness in the other stories and the play. A glossary of untranslatable terms would have been very helpful. Otherwise, an American can only guess at the meaning of sentences like: "The achmani was sparkling clean and the vadki was full of sheera." I give Khakhar 5 stars; I give the translations 2 stars. Nonetheless, this is a must-have for Khakhar fans.

                                                              Book Description

City of Life, City of Death: Memories of Riga is Max Michelson's stirring and haunting personal account of the Soviet and German occupations of Latvia and of the Holocaust.

Michelson had a serene boyhood in an upper middle-class Jewish family in Riga, Latvia--at least until 1940, when the fifteen-year old Michelson witnessed the annexation of Latvia by the Soviet Union. Private properties were nationalized, and Stalin's terror spread to Soviet Latvia. Soon after, Michelson's family was torn apart by the 1941 Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. He quickly lost his entire family, while witnessing the unspeakable brutalities of war and genocide.

Michelson's memoir is an ode to his lost family; it is the speech of their muted voices and a thank you for their love. Although badly scarred by his experiences, like many other survivors he was able to rebuild his life and gain a new sense of what it means to be alive.

His experiences will be of interest to scholars of both the Holocaust and Eastern European history, as well as the general reader.

In addition to providing a detailed account of the Holocaust in Riga, Latvia, this book is an excellent description of pre-WWII Jewish life and culture in Latvia. Due to the lack of survivors, there are relatively few accounts of the Holocaust in Latvia. The author is an engineer, and he understands the importance of detail. I found the description of his family life very interesting from a cultural standpoint. Overall, I think this an excellent account, especially interesting for someone who is interested in how the Holocaust affected people in different countries and the the kinds of people and cultures that disappeared.

This is a very wordy description of one Jewish family and its various branches. The first 80 pages could have been done in 30. After the first part it becomes an interesting description of one person's view of survival. Good book if you are studying the Holocaust.

Max Michelson's chronicle of his life in the ghetto in Riga, Latvia during the Nazi occupation is an incredible tale that can't be told by anybody else, because most people died. The story is told so simply that the miracle of his survival lives outside the pages in what we know of history and what we realize from the few statistics he gives. Everyone should read this book. It is the actual, human story that those of us who haven't faced death at the hands of an evil power have tried to create in our own heads to understand. Considering world events today the kind of education that Max Michelson provides is just the kind we need.
