The true story of a boys experiences in the Jasenovac concentration camp in World War IIs Nazi puppet state of Croatia. Hidden history, unknown to Western audiences, the Jasenovac concentration camp, the so-called Balkan Auschwitz, was a place of torture and death for hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, and Gypsies.
Customer Reviews:
Real holocaust story.......2004-12-13
This work presents a true account of Vatican's "forbidden holocaust" and Croatian genocide of Serbs, in Second World War...The most evil concentration camp of all nazi camps, Jasenovac in Croatia, was the place of torture and extermination of close to 1 milion Serbs, Jews and other non-catholics in Balkans. This is a powerful book that will make you want to know more and after reading it, your understanding of present situation and wars in Yugoslavia will be quite clear...Do not miss it.
Was about time we found out about these attrocities.......2003-03-22
In Romania we have been thought in school about Dachau, Auswitz, Sobibor etc but I don't think I ever heard about Jasenovac. My parents and grandparents told me about the Croatian atrocities against the Serbians in WWII but I had yet to find something on this theme in the west.It seems that the media demonization of the Serbs would've been somehow less complete if the story of Jasenovac was told.Great book, allows one to comprehend the fear the Serbs felt when they were forced to live again in an independent Croatia.A Croatia led by a holocaust denier who promised to rid the country of the Serbian "cancer".The Serbian ethic minority was cleansed indeed...with western support of course.
If everyone in the West would've read the book perhaps the media's lies about the Yugoslav conflict would've been much easier to detect.
At the Holocaust Museum in Washington there was no mention of Jasenovac and although there are numerous pictures depicting the carnage that befell the Serbs they are surprisingly missing from the museum.Wouldn't go well with the media and the government's script.
It is surprising to find a book that describe a first hand account of that savagery committed by the Ustasha(Croatians) against the Serbs.I wonder if there will be a book about their atrocities committed nowadays against the Serbs?Maybe we'll have to wait another 50-60 years to read about them.Btw Croatia was declared the most ethnically clean country in the world.Reading this book one can understand why.
Great book.......2003-02-21
I would like to say one thing. This book is excelent. it is a first hand account from the eyes of child who lived through WW2. If one looks at other reviews we see people talking about how horrible this book is and how it is all lies. Now lets look at thsoe peoples names, all Croats. Jasenovac did happen and people who deny it are lying. Even the Croatian government said that 700,000 did die there. Come on now 700,000 Serbs in 4 years. That means 500 people per day. ohh i am so sorry 500 people per day is not a massacre. please stop, read the book, read history books, read academic records and you will see Jasenovac is true and this is a innocent first view on the camp.
Blame the editor.......2003-01-26
This is the first time I'm feeling compelled to write a review for Amazon's readers and here's why: this book is based on a short first hand account written by a Bosnian Serb inmate in Jasenovac and it's quite interesting. I mean: the guy's no Primo Levi but the account looks honest and heartfelt enough to haunt a feeble-gutted reader. It doesn't add much to what was already known about Jasenovac; indeed I expected a much more gruesome tale, but the author asserts he reported only what he saw directly and that's fine with me. What's not fine with me at all is the editor's job, that trasformed a honest book in sheer propaganda of the worst kind. I don't know if she was duped into this, but she should really shoulder the blame of having manipulated for shameless purposes (i.e. finding a pretext and a justification for the massacres perpetrated by Serbs in the 92-95 war) a honest effort by somebody who saw hell with his own eyes. The notes intermingled with the text are at best misleading when they're not completely spurious (e.g. the horrific account of the king of cut-throats, quoted by some other reviewer below is taken from Avro Manhattan and NOT from the author of the book. Manhattan is a source no serious researcher would quote with a ten foot pole). If anybody still has any doubt on what the purposes of the editor (Wanda Schindley, for the record) are, just check out the home page of the International Committee to Defend Slobodan Milosevic and you will find the book in object quoted under the caption "Why did Serbian people *not* want to be ruled by Croatia in 1991?". I can sympathise with some of the editor's points, particularly about the role of the Vatican in the 92-95 war and the process of beatification of Stepinac, but from that to manipulation there's a long winding road. Finally I'd like to say a word curiously absent from the editor's epilogue: Srebrenica.
Devastatingly truthful read........2002-09-20
From the moment I purchased this book I could not put it down until I was finished it (a few hours later).
Ivanovic's personal account of his "1000 days" in hell is so devastatingly truthful, so shocking and is a perfect example of why his story "had to be told". So brutal are his accounts of events from 1942-1945, that I was nearly brought to tears on several occasions.
The sheer brutality of the Croatian Nazi masters (Ustashi) was unparralled in Europe during WWII. In fact, even Germans found the Ustashi methods of torture and liquidation beyond explanation. The methods of torture and murder at Jasenovac even exceeded the horrors of Auschwitz. While the main target of the murderous ISC were Serbs, they also liquidated tens of thousands of Jews, Gypsies and Partisan Croatians.
It is amazing that the realities of Jasenovac have remained largely a "hidden shame" for the Croat government of the ISC and even the current Neo-Fascist regime in Croatia presently.
The single most impressive part about this book pertains to points of factual or statistical reference (by way of footnotes). Most of the sources the editors used were either from Croat WWII sources or Catholic Church sources. Often the debate about Jasenovac has revolved around the false belief that Serbian historians falsified numbers, facts and statistics. By using sources from Croatia and the Vatican this book has legitimized the horrors that the sons and daughters of Serbia faced in WWII.
Additionally this book puts into context the current climate in fascist Croatia and Fundamentalist Bosnia. Only through survivor accounts (such as this) and greater investigation into Croatian attrocities at Jasenovac can the Balkan's move forward into the 21st century.
I highly recommend this book to all who seek the truth about a place called hell, a place called Jasenovac.

You'll get the what-for on nutrition and a sustainable program to carry you forward. Fitness will become a personal adventure rather than a daily act of obligation. Paul Scott's series of Outside magazine articles out of which this book has emerged won a National Magazine Award. Full-color throughout, index.
Customer Reviews:
Nice introduction to the science behind exercise.......2006-05-13
Paul Scott is very thorough in this book describing the science behind functional training. The exercises are very useful for beginning a workout routine. For advanced people I recommend that you incorporate a few of the exercises into your routine as well. You'd be surprised at what a difference it makes.
A couple of the reviewers were bitching about some typos. Come on people this isn't English Comp class. Quit being so [...]. It's an interesting read and I highly recommend it.
Not So Picky.......2006-02-09
As a mountain guide, I geuss I am more interested in the practical advice given in this book than whether it has enough slick style, perfect spelling, excellent grammar or impeccable editing. And really don't consider this book an excuse to ravage the Outside Magazine's style.
I have been using the original "Shape Of Your Life" workout that appeared in Outside Magazine for about 2 years, and was happy to see this book update that workout and take it to the next level. While this version takes more time out of my day to workout than the old version, it also seems to be getting me in better physical condition. As Mr. Scott says the program is only an outline and after I finish the 24 weeks I will start combining the best of the original workout with this one to keep it interesting.
Great fitness book for the 21st century.......2006-01-22
I'm a middle-aged guy who maintained a decent level of fitness throughout my 20s and 30s, by doing repetitive weightlifting exercises and running. My motivation was primarily aesthetic, and, alas, the results were little more than that, as well. That is, despite how I looked I did not feel very "functionally fit," and my motivation began to wane, big-time, in my late 30s. I had used the Body Sculpting Bible for Men for a while, to good effect, but after a while, I just could not keep up the grind -- the excruciatingly repetitive routine of numerous exercises, most of which (and the authors of that book are very explicit and intentional about this) work your muscles in super-isolation. For someone after a purely aesthetic outcome, I would still recommend that book. However, for someone who wants to *feel* great, and actually *be* fit, in a 'healthy,' deep way, and not just in a 'cosmetic,' shallow sense, this (Outside Fitness) is a great book. It has given me a new direction, and new motivation, in the physical aspect of my life, and for that I am grateful and just downright happy. It's great when for years you have a vague, unarticulated intuition about how something should be done, and then finally you read its articulation, and you have this "Aha!" moment -- that was my experience reading this book.
I find some previous reviewers' complaints about the design and writing quality puzzling. (Are we talking about the same book?) I very much like Scott's conversational writing style. I have read a lot of fitness books, and this is absolutely one of the most readable -- and I appreciate that. And since this is as much a book about fitness *philosophy* as it is about technique, then naturally there will be some text (I would have been happy to read more), and not just pic after pic of some caveman lifting dumbbells over his head. (And having a photo of a triathlete on the cover makes perfect sense to me.)
And the 'program' is flexible and easily adaptable to the reader's unique goals and starting point. This may not be 'black-and-white' enough for some, but again this is a different philosophy. Maybe the book's not for everyone -- and maybe it's not even the best book on functional fitness -- but it's a really good first foray into it, in my view.
Let's Hope There's a Second Edition.......2006-01-16
I really wanted to like this book. It has been a couple of years in the making, following the "Shape of Your Life" series originally published in Outside Magazine. My issue is primarily with the poor presentation of what is some generally great information. There are too many typos to address individually so I'm going to concentrate on a couple of major issues.
Let's start with the cover. Outside has long been recognized for great editorial design. The cover does not live up to the standard set by the magazine. It is dated, unauthentic, confusing and uninspiring. I think to a certain extent you can judge a book by its cover. This book is about functional fitness and yet features a shirtless dude carrying his bike over his head for reason other than to show-off his back. Compare it with "Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness" and the difference is clear.
Once you get inside there are other perfectly avoidable errors. The illustration accompanying the "Stability-Ball Dumbell Row" is actually the illustration for the "Stability-Ball Tricep Extension" and is used again later in the book. Either no one responsible for the book noticed, or they figured none of us would notice. No matter what the explanation, it calls into question the accuracy and thoroughness of the rest of the book. There's really no excuse for such sloppiness.
It seems like a project that lacked the support and supervision of the magazine that sets the standard for outdoor enthusiast publications. I sincerely hope they consider repackaging and re-editing the material in another edition. It, and we, deserve better.
Disappointing for an Outside Mag. reader.......2006-01-14
My wife got me Outside Fitness for Christmas knowing I enjoy the magazine and am working on getting back into shape.
What she didn't realize is that I have actually been getting more and more disapointed in Outside magazine. Quality is slipping as they are trying to compete with various new "mens"magazines none of which appeal to me.
Well Outside Fitness is severely lacking too. It was a nice idea and could have been great. Also, this book like a previous reviewer has already said, could definitely use some heavy editing.
Be nice if it were like the old Outside magazine - Be nicer if Outside Magazine were like its old self!

Mmmmmmmmmm Spaaaaammmmmm!.......2007-05-26
For Breakfast I have Spam. For Lunch, Spam, and for Dinner, Spam. This cookbook comes in real handy for my voracious appetite for Spam.
Spam: King Of Hawaiian Canned Meats.......2006-08-10
On a per capita basis, Hawaii consumes more than three and a half times more Spam annually than any other state (that's four million cans a year, all told.) The author claims, and makes a good case that Spam is "Hawaii's soul food." After World War Two when Spam became the brunt of derogatory jokes in most of the world, Hawaiians continued their Spam consumption at a voracious rate. In the process they got more and more imaginative in the preparations. I travel to Hawaii on business quite a bit, and can vouch for the popularity of Spam: even the Local McDonald's has a Spam breakfast. I just had it last week, in fact: it consists of two pieces of fried Spam, scrambled eggs, and two scoops of rice. Try finding that on the mainland.
While I admit to having the McSpam breakfast as a novelty, Hawaiians take their Spam very seriously, and this book showcases some extremely imaginative methods of preparing Spam. It has "Spam and Mushroom Rolls," "Spam Musubi," "Kalua Spam," "Spam Won Ton," "Spam Chowder," "Spam Fu Young," "Spam and Zucchini Omelet," and the unpleasant sounding "Basic Spam-Fishcake Pupu Mix," among many other recipes.
To say that there is a wide variety of Spam recipes here is quite an understatement, but there's much more than just Spam here. In a continuing homage to the Hawaiian love of canned and potted meat food products, there are also recipes for sardines, corned beef, and Vienna sausages, all of which are wildly popular on the islands. Enjoy the "Sardines and Warabi [Fern Shoots]," "Mabel's Kim Chee Sardines" (which is a gastronomic line in the sand I refuse to cross), "Sardine and Tofu Souffle," "Puukolii Pork 'n Beans," "Vienna Sausage Pupus," "and something named simply "Pokey-Pokey" (Filipino scrambled eggs complete with Vienna sausage, eggplant, and garlic.)
The book contains many basic, yet amusing, illustrations, and a glossary of terms germane to Hawaiian Spam cookery, which helps the neophyte Spam chef substantially.
If you want a single book on cooking Spam Hawaiian style, this is the best volume you will ever find. I'm not saying that I would eat everything in this book, but I am saying that this is the book I recommend above all others in the quest for preparing authentic Hawaiian Spam dishes!
'Ai iho!
SPAM no ka oi!.......2001-01-13
When I first moved away from Hawaii in 1995, my grandmother gave me this book to take along with me to Japan. In Japan, the SPAM there still has the "key" to open the cans. Anyway, I used several of the recipes such as: "SPAM MUSUBI", "Korean Style SPAM", and "Sato Shoyu SPAM" and introduced them to my Japanese colleagues who immediately fell in love with SPAM. I told my Japanese colleagues to visit 7-11 in Hawaii to see that SPAM MUSUBI is even sold there!! Now I live in Indiana where SPAM is well, not as popular as it is back in Hawaii. I have brought SPAM MUSUBI to work where my new colleagues have frowned in disbelievement, but after they tried it, they did not have a bad thing to say about this ingenious SPAM creation. Ms. Kondo Corum's book is well written and provides a glossary of unfamiliar terms for the non-Hawaii person. Besides SPAM, she also covers some other local island favorites such as: vienna sausages, corned beef, and sardines. The recipes and instructions are easy to read and the meals are easy to prepare. The artwork adds to the appeal of the recipes. If you love SPAM and would like to get recipes that you would normally not find here in the 48 states, this is your book!
It is amazing what you can make with SPAM!!.......1998-07-23
All of the dishes are easy to prepare as well as tasty. Kids especially love the main courses and appetizers. Spam is practically a staple diet of the locals in Hawaii, and you will find "spam musubi", soyu spam, etc. at many picnics and beach outings. Unbelievably, there are also very elegant dinners in this book, that you would not even think could be made with Spam!

overstates the obvious.......2002-08-28
Sorry, but I found this book rather flat. The author's thesis is rather obvious, and while it has some value as a source of enthusiasm/inspiration, it's not particularly insightful. Save your money and buy some books to read to your kid.
An Exceptional Book to teach parents reading is important........1999-02-16
I had to read this book for a children's literature course and I was floored by all of the information that Jim Trelease gave about how important reading is for young children. Not only did he support all of his ideas with fact but the book was easy to understand. I think that this book is very informative for people who do not know which books to choose to read to their children. Futhermore this book gives the do's and don't lists about reading to young children as well as older children. It also tells of how books should be read outloud to children and adolescents all though school. This includes highschool classes. This book is amazing and I was very impressed by it and I hope that Jim Trelease continues to write and publish lists of books that are good reads for children.
This is an excellent book. Every parent should have a copy........1997-07-09
Reading aloud to children is one of the best gifts a parent can give a child. The benefits are immediate, and can also last a lifetime

A Remarkable Biography of a Remarkable Woman.......2000-07-11
Ann Delbee's nonficton treasure introduces us to one of the most compelling personalities of recent history. Camille Claudel was, in trite terms that fail miserably to serve her, a contemporary, colleague, and lover of the famed sculptor Auguste Rodin. Not a biography, but an unabashed dissection of the life, loves, works, and passions of a true renaissance woman, this biographical masterpiece illuminates every nuance of an exremely complex persona. Detail and development are so extensive that it is difficult to remind oneself that this is not AUTOBIOGRAPHY. We are thrust into the midst of the stormy relationship between Claudel and Rodin and learn of her influences on the great artist's life and work. At the same time, we reflect on Camille's own place in the art world. The author paints a vivid potrait of Camille's home and family life, especially the bond she shared with her brother, the poet Paul Claudel. Delbee succeeds with splendor in developing an understanding of Camille's unique position as a woman in her society. Ultimately, Camille Claudel rises from these pages both triumphant and tragic.

This is a book that I wish I had not read and yet it is one of the best books I have ever read. Camille Claudel's soul found it's path into mine and I felt all the hate towards August Rodin that she was incapable of because of her love for him and breathtaking passion for her own and his work. In a lot of ways this book resembles "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" in revealing how a human spirit will not bend....
Book Description
A harrowing, action-packed account of the author's series of audacious escapes from the Nazis' Final Solution--"riveting...a fascinating and moving piece of history" (Library Journal).
Young Leo Bretholz survived the Holocaust by escaping from the Nazis (and others) not once, but seven times during his almost seven-year ordeal crisscrossing war-torn Europe. He leaped from trains, outran police, and hid in attics, cellars, anywhere that offered a few more seconds of safety. First he swam the River Sauer at the German-Belgian border. Later he climbed the Alps on feet so battered they froze to his socks--only to be turned back at the Swiss border. He crawled out from under the barbed wire of a French holding camp, and hid in a village in the Pyrenees while gendarmes searched it. And in the dark hours of one November morning, he escaped from a train bound for Auschwitz.
Leap into Darkness is the sweeping memoir of one Jewish boy's survival, and of the family and the world he left behind.

the human spirit.......2007-01-11
an incredible story about the human spirit and the will to live against all odds.
it rules.......2005-09-27
Well, the writer is my Grandpa. I am 10 years old so I read it early. My mom helped me out a lot. But thats not exactly a bad thing! Everytime I came to a word I didn't know she would tell me. My mom really could help because my mom was even the one who read it and edited it so she was one of the first, and that really helped because she knew the whole story. I first thought it wasn't such a bad tradgedy of what he did, but after I accually read it, I really changed my mind! If you have not read it, you really got to. Even if you are ten like me, try and you will really like it! Expeccially read it if you like biographies and autobiographies, cause this is an autobiography! Even if you don't like non-fiction, read it anyway! This is so cool that it sounds impossible, and im it sounds impossible it's as fiction as any other book!
Austria was very involved in the Holocaust.......2004-11-10
The part that most struck me was when he wrote "Before the war would end, little Austria would supply nearly half of the staff of all Nazi concentration camps and death camps." and the story he tells of being a boy in Vienna in March 1938 "when Hitler entered the city and found a quarter of a million people rapturously cheering him". He says his cousin Sonja still lives in Vienna "where the citizens now call themselves victims....hoping to keep their secret from the rest of the world". Hitler was an Austrian and so was the head of the Gestapo Kaltenbrunner and many many other Nazi's.
Amazing story of several escapes by Leo.......2004-08-01
I've read several books about the holocaust, whether their authors were survivors of the death camps, survivors on the run, or even non-Jews who helped others survive by hiding them. This book was an incredible story. His escapes were brave and amazing. I'm always looking for more stories such as this, it is amazing to me, there are so many stories, I want to know them all. If you have any other recommendations, e-mail me at Stacy1212@aol.com. Great book, must read.
This book was incredible.......2004-03-18
I just finished this book, I coulnt beleive the outcome of it.It was so shocking to hear all of this. I couldn't put it down. Im very interested in the Holocaust, even though im not a surviver, but it is so interesting on how people were back in WWII, it amazes me that people had to go through all of this..I would diffently reccommend this. Thanks to Leo and Michael, to share such a tragic story and a big and unhumian peice of your life, a peice of history..Best Wishes
