Customer Reviews:
The most useful text I've found.......2006-06-19
There's an awful lot of books out there purporting to be written by "the experts" regarding alcoholism and drug addiciton. Very few of them provide any useful insights into how the families of those suffering from Chemical Dependency can find the help they so badly need. In this book Stephanie Brown and her colleagues put their many years of research and experience together in a format that is easily understood and more perhaps more importantly that can be put into practice. She demystifies and gives language to concepts and ideas that can be baffling and overwhelming to families in crisis. The stages of recovery from active use through early recovery and the trauma that involves, moving through to ongoing recovery issues, are explained clearly, highlighting how the family "system" is affected and tools the family can use to navigate each stage.
I loved this book, it helped me make sense of my own alcoholic family in a way no other book has been able to.

My Most Used Cook Book.......2007-02-11
I've had this cook book since 1993. I've baked with this starter for all these years. Recipes are great. They have been hits at our house and every where I take something cooked out of this book. Many good recipes that don't use the stater also. It's time for a new book. My book is yellow, stained, and very worn. Can't live without it.

Great recipes for Herman........2003-08-10
I had not been given Herman in many years. When he recently turned up again I wanted some new recipes. I found the name of this cookbook in an old newspaper article about Herman that I had saved from several years ago. I was pleasantly surprised that I could get a copy through Amazon.com. The book is packed with all kinds of recipes and all that I have tried have been quite tasty. You can't go wrong with this one.
For the cook looking for something different.......2001-11-21
This cookbook specializes in growing and using a "sweet sourdough" yeast starter called "Herman." Lots of you have seen these "friendship" starters passed around--they look like frothy pancake batter. This book teaches you how to make you own starter, maintain it, and use it in a variety of bread, cake and cookies. Yes, is does make bakings moister and last longer. The book also has a brief recipe at the beginning for the fermented fruit starter (no yeast). This would be a great gift for the cook-from-scratch cook who likes trying new techniques. It also contains a lot of down-home anecdotes. You'll feel like you're reading your Great-Aunt Helen's old recipe notebook. A NOTE OF CAUTION -- This is not for the novice cook. The writers assume some knowledge of basic cooking techniques and this will drive an inexperienced cook WILD with frustration. Try some clear simple yeast bread and cake recipes from a step-by-step cookbook before tackling this one.
friendship starter.......2000-10-03
want to be able to make a buch of differnt things with one starter. this is the book. you wont need anything else but this one. it is by far the best cookbook i own. and i own 1000.

A visual feast and informative too.......2006-09-24
Ornithologist Colin Harrison and writer Howard Loxton have produced a gorgeous coffee table book for bird lovers. Every page is a feast of colorful birds, often three or four close-up action shots to a page with captions illustrative of the main text.
The first half of the book, The Physical Bird and The Life of the Bird, discusses anatomy and mechanics in lively detail from feather construction to the navigational sense and explores the bird's daily and seasonal round. The writing is clear, well organized and rife with absorbing examples, exceptions and occasional anthropomorphic witticisms.
The second half summarizes bird classifications and families with thumbnail sketches of feeding and nesting habits and concludes with a look at human/bird relations through history. Informative, readable and exquisite, this book is one to peruse again and again.
Hidden Gem for Bird Lovers.......2005-11-26
This book was first published in 1993 and may have been hidden from sight in recent years. Don't be misled by the title of the book to believe that it is only about flight. Instead, it is complete with the birds' evolution, life cycles, classification and relationship with mankind. Descriptions about bird flight and their senses, followed by detailed accounts of breeding, nestling, fleding, maturing and migration etc are very interesting with accompanying photos, which are excellent too. The comprehensive classification of bird families is also great reference to complement any field guides. It is on par with another favourite book of mine on the same topic, "The Life of Birds" by David Attenborough. Both books will make your coffee table a more popular place to your visitors.

pretty pictures.......2007-08-27
The Bead Fantasies are chock full of pretty pictures, sure to fire up the imagination. The directions sometimes lose a little in translation. These books are NOT FOR BEGINNERS!
I highly recommend this series.......2007-07-18
If you're a serious beader, then this series is a must have. The designs in this book are totally different than your typical bead books. There's quite a few challenging designs that will leave you feeling satisfied once the projects are complete. I wish there were more bead design books like this one!
Bead Fantasies 3.......2007-01-27
Lots of nice pictures and diagrams, however the projects are not as good as what were in her first two books, Bead Fantasies 1 and 2
A beading Musthave.......2006-09-29
This is the best collection, I've see so far. I have beaded the pendant in the book cover 5 times in 5 different colors. I just love it.
If you liked the previous 2 books...........2006-07-05
this will not disappoint you either! Her first book was the first I ever bought, when I started beading. Loved it, then loved the second one, and third one is no different. If you're a beginner it might take you a little longer to figure out her instuctions, but once you pass that, it is easy to follow.

Book Description
Empirically proving that -- no matter where you are -- kids wanna rock, this is Chuck Klosterman's hilrious memoir of growing up as a shameless metalhead in Wyndmere, North Dakotoa (population: 498). With a voice like Ace Frehley's guitar, Klosterman hacks his way through hair-band history, beginning with that fateful day in 1983 when his older brother brought home Mötley Crüe's Shout at the Devil. The fifth-grade Chuck wasn't quite ready to rock -- his hair was too short and his farm was too quiet -- but he still found a way to bang his nappy little head. Before the journey was over, he would slow-dance to Poison, sleep innocently beneath satanic pentagrams, lust for Lita Ford, and get ridiculously intellectual about Guns N' Roses. C'mon and feel his noize.
Customer Reviews:
Decent, But Glam Rock is Not Metal.......2007-09-18
This book is deceiving. It is NOT about metal, it is about glam rock, or hair metal (Motley Crue, Poison, Def Leppard etc.), which is NOT really metal. It is POP rock.
Having said that, this book is still mildly entertaining. It is a pretty well told story of growing up in a really small town and listening to ROCK, and some metal, and not really fitting in. There are numerous humorous scenarios and it is an easy read.
However, at times Klosterman can get VERY pedantic, especially when discussing his tastes in music. If he doesn't like a band, song, whatever, it automatically sucks, and is open for his harsh criticism. As a HUGE fan of Iron Maiden, it was very hard to sit and read him rip apart one of my favorite bands.
Read for yourself, some will love, some will hate.
chuck klosterman wouldnt know heavy metal if it hit him upside the head.......2007-08-14
this is the most worthless book i have ever read in my life. anyone who gets duped into buying this toilet paper should just give me their money and i will kick them in the nuts. its about the same effect as reading this trash.
chuck klosterman isnt from fargo. chuck klosterman is the reason why metallica skipped fargo on one of their tours. chuck klosterman doesnt represent the metal scene in the fargo area.
What Would He Write Now?.......2007-07-18
I grew up in an Illinois town that sounds a lot like Chuck's -- just a bit bigger, perhaps... And, like Chuck, I had a problem in the 90s admitting I listened to (and loved) heavy metal. In 1997, I went so far as to give away all of my "hair metal" albums to a co-worker. Did I still like the music? Sure, but I thought I would "move on."
Guess what? It didn't take me long to buy all the stuff back. I couldn't deny what I loved.
Chuck's book's main problem is that he still "sits on the fence." By the end of the book, he more or less admits that he likes the music of his formative years, but he still seems to have a problem being true to what he likes. Maybe this is his attempt at humor -- I don't know, as this is the first time I've ever read his stuff. All I know is, if he wants to write a book about heavy metal and what it meant to him, then he shouldn't describe it as "boring," as he does in a few places, and he shouldn't say one thing one place and the complete opposite in another place... that is, without letting it be clear how he truly feels now.
The book came out about six years ago, though, and if he went through the phase of "I can't listen to this crap any more" like I did, then maybe he's finally accepted that the music will belong to him for the rest of his days, and that it's okay to listen to the music of your high school years.
mr klosterman's narrow mind and bad taste do not warrant book length treatment.......2007-03-26
mr klosterman wonders why so much is made of the chapter titled "i get drunk and go to a hockey game:" an essay describing his penchant for alcohol abuse. well, sir; here's the deal: it's the only really fine piece of writing here. otherwise, the glories of having bad taste in music just do not carry a book. and then there's mr klosterman's narrow little mind. a very small place it seems, where ole' chucky loves to dictate how other people (especially people older and more talented than him) should carry on with their lives. this book simply adds up to one big drag. i don't know mr klosterman, never even seen him; but i predict divorce/failed relationships galore for the man. a narrow mind and poor thinking cannot equal success in that department of life. his book was overwhelmingly a waste of my time.
You Can't Kill Rock'N'Roll......It's Here To Stay!.......2007-01-10
I absolutely love this book. As a child of the 80's and particularly 80's metal this book was a real trip down memory lane. His personal stories are wonderfully written and his analysis of the genre is pretty much right on. The only problem I have with the book is that he tries too hard to defend 80's metal. I feel no need to do so because I simply don't care if other people liked it or not. I did and so did a lot of my friends. In fact I still love to crank the "80's metal" playlist on my iPod.
To me the 80's is the by far the greatest musical decade precisely because most of the music had no deep meaning. It was about having fun and enjoying life(although not by the same moral code I followed). The 90's came along and all of a sudden everyone is depressed and they're trying to tell me why I should be also. Sorry, there are too many reasons NOT to be depressed, especially in this country.
This book is funny, witty and a fantastic read, even if you're not a fan of 80's metal. I look forward to checking out some of his other titles.

Survival For a Dream.......2007-01-24
The Defiant is the story of Shalom Yoran (born Selim Sznycer)
, and his time spent with the partisans fighting the Nazis in Poland. After three years on the run , with his family , from Nazi mobile killing units , the Nazi terror finally caught up with them and in the little town of Kurzeniec , 1 040 Jewish men , women and children where dragged from their homes and hiding places , murdered and burned. Included among those slaughtered where Selim's parents.
Selim and his brother escaped into the woods and joined the partisans , and heeded the last words of their mother to survive and take vengeance for them.
This is the story of the partisan guerilla warfare against Nazi terror.
Although Selim fought among non-Jews , he always fought first and foremost as a Jew - with them but not as one of them. He dreamed of having his own country , of fighting for it and even dying for it-that is what kept him alive. The dream of surviving and living in the Land of Israel as a free Jew and building it.
After the war , his dream was fulfilled , and having escaped the Soviet Army that tried to draft him , and the British blockade that tried to keep Jews out of Palestine , he settled in Israel and joined the airforce , becoming a prominent businessman in Israel.
The Zionists in Europe where always the backbone of Jewish resistance to Nazism.
Success is the best revenge.......2007-01-13
I read the original hardbound edition of this book maybe five years ago, after chancing upon a copy with no prior knowledge of its contents or author. I read the book quickly, and recall being on the edge of my seat with each turn of a page. The author, named at birth as born Selim Sznycer, tells briefly, of his family's flight from the Nazi invasion of western Poland to the eastern, Soviet-occupied town of Kurzeniec, where they remained until the Germans bombed there too, killing his parents.
Rather than surrender to a certain death, Selim (who later changed his name to Shalom Yoran) and his brother Musio fled to a deeply forested swampy area, at whose center they constructed a hidden bunker with some friends. There, they struggled merely to stay clothed, warm and fed. They had little to trade and no money with which to buy, and were reduced to infrequent forays into villages several miles distant, where they could steal enough rags and potatoes to survive. Lighting fires was difficult; the smell or sight of smoke could attract attention.
At one point, Yoran left the hovel to search for food only to return and find several comrades dead. He and his brother then fled further east, and ultimately joined the Soviet and Polish partisans. This was not only an act of extraordinary defiance, it was itself fraught with danger, as both the Polish peasants and Russian partisans with whom they fought were themselves highly distrusting, and hateful, of Jews. At first, Selim was not trusted with guns. He was left to fight with sticks, a fake rifle, and in one case, a pitchfork. But gradually, a few comrades developed trust and respect for him, as he became an expert at bombing the railroad tracks carrying German supply trains. He derailed several trains; the sabotage stopped German war materiel transports--and required extensive new track construction, significantly slowing Germany's war machine in the region.
Ultimately, the author survived and fled Europe for Israel, where he broke through the British blockade, joined the Israeli air force and built a successful Israeli business. Although Yoran necessarily survived only by fighting, success (as I have written before) is the best revenge. And for Yoran, that came through building a new life, business and family in Israel.
--Alyssa A. Lappen
Life of a warrior.......2007-01-12
A well written story. Consise and able to take the reader on a journey. Full of lessons in life, and examples of what a person is able to live thru and do in their life.
Amazing perspective from a person who was not only able to survive unbelievable odds but do so with a determination and stile.
Gripping account.......2006-04-15
More and more survival accounts are starting to come out in regard to Jewish partisans, whether they were Soviet or Polish. This is one of the most interesting accounts I've read and goes to show that Jews did not just sit by and idly wait for death, on the contrary they tried the best they could to come to grips with reality and take revenge for what was happening to them and their families. A quick and compelling read, the author wrote all his memories down right after the war so that they were still fresh and much of what he describes rings true and is worth knowing and acknowledging. A worthwhile account of a struggle rarely remembered or thought about.
A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back.......2003-03-10
The Defiant: A True Story Of Escape, Survival & Resistance is the personal memoir of Shalom Yoran, a young man who dared to become a Jewish resistance fighter in Poland during the grim years of World War II. Yoran's story (and the story of the brave men and women who fought with him), is brought forward from a manuscript which he drafted fifty years ago while recuperating in an Israeli hospital. A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back in spite of atrocity and anti-Semitism on all sides, The Defiant is a welcome and highly recommended addition to World War II History collections, Holocaust Studies, and 20th Century Jewish History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
