Book Description
First published in 1834, Samuel Leech's autobiographical account of his adventures on British and U.S. frigates offers not only entertaining action but an astute observation of the harsh rigors and traditions of naval life during the early nineteenth century.

A Pleasant Voice and Tale.......2007-05-16
This was an interesting read after the long, but satisfying, Two Years Before the Mast. Both of them profess to be unique in that they tell the story of sailing on a ship, not from the view of an officer, but of an actual sailor. I think the subsequent popularity of each book shows how moot their own claims are now, since I've yet to read an account from an officer, but have read two tales from the forecastle, as they would put it. A Voice From the Main Deck probably has more interesting content than Two Years Before the Mast since it follows Samuel Leech as a young boy in a British royal naval ship during the Napoleonic wars and the War of 1812 who then defects to the American side after his capture. And yet, at the same time, Samuel's account is much shorter, and rightfully so. Samuel, though he has more interesting tales to tell, hits more of the action, spending little time only on the day to day experience on the ship. Dana, in Two Years Before the Mast, seems almost opposite to this. And yet his story, too, is satisfying in its own way. The two authors played to their strengths and the results were good. Probably my only issue about A Voice From the Main Deck is Leech's occasional narrator apologies of his previous actions. I don't think the reader needs the narrator to interject at points to ensure his audience understands that lying is bad or stealing is wrong or drinking is a sin. That kind of sanctimonious reproving kept on creeping into the moment of the narration, ruining the flow and feel. Perhaps those kind of reflections would work better in the final chapter as an overview if he was really scared that the reader absolutely needed to be warned, but otherwise it's just a distraction. For what it's worth, however, it often balanced a fine line between being annoying and amusing. You kind of liked seeing an old sailor trying to impose his newly found religion on some coarse, old habits in his past. Then again, you kind of just wanted to read the story and leave the judgment to yourself. Overall, however, you cannot fault Leech for his incredible material. One thing is certain: having had a life experience like Samuel Leech had and not writing about it would have been the biggest sin he could have committed.
A GREAT Voice from the Main Deck.......2004-08-05
This is an amazing account of the true life story of Samuel Leech's 30 years as a Seaman during the 1800's. He takes you through the first stage of a sailors life before joining the Navy (much like today: filled with hope of the 'sailors life' to only be disappointed later) to being the new kid on board, to learning the life as a sailor and gaining the respect of others on board. He takes you with him on board his first ship, the HMS Macedonian; to port visits in Spain and Portugal, to the bore of blockading French ports, and to a fierce battle with the US frigate United States in the War of 1812. He is later taken POW of the US; only to later serve in the US navy. He helps prove how life really was onboard a ship during this time period and enabling the reader to discover what 'sea stories' had truth behind them. It is a great testamony to sailors of all centuries that life of a sailor is not what is hoped for before joining, and it what and how the sailor makes of it. Must read for a history guru of the eaily 1800's or of Man O' Wars books.
more of cranky rant than a memoir.......2001-03-09
This short book is mostly composed of self righteous lectures about how to improve the world or one's own life. There is very little detail or anecdote. I believe only a die hard fan of the sailing era could derive any value from this.
A Voice from the Main Deck.......2000-07-14
Anyone who enjoys Patrick O'Brian's novels, the Hornblower series, or the like, will be fascinated by this true-life autobiography that reads like a novel. Leech joined the Royal Navy at age 12, and was in the crew of the Macedonian when she was captured by the frigate United States during the War of 1812; his account of that battle is worth the price of the book all by itself. This book was a best-seller a century and a half ago and ought to be one again today. The fine intros add that much more, and the Naval Institute's "Classics" format makes a solid, handsome volume. (Disclaimer: I edited one of the early volumes in the series myself-- but this is an unsolicited testimonial; the book is a good read.)

Book Description
Originally published as a single volume, The Heart of Listening has been re-issued as two separate volumes because of public demand for a more concise, portable edition. Milne, a third generation Scottish osteopath, begins by explaining the visionary approach to healing, and how it may be applied to the realm of craniosacral work. He explains the importance of meditation, centering, and the cultivation of heartfulness in the development of compassionate practice. Milne introduces the reader to the story of visionary work—its genesis, evolution, philosophy, and practice—and explains how a grounding in meditation, sensitive touch, and intuitive perception can lead to a remarkable unfoldment in skill development.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommend.......2007-01-09
Hugh Milne's 2 vol. set combines poetry, art, and technique in the field of Craniosacral Therapy. Great insight to the therapist's process, as well as, the client. It goes beyond the technical to the artful and creative process of being with your client, as you help their body heal itself. Not only beautiful, and inspiring, but deals, in detail, with the technical aspects of craniosacral work. It is a definite "must" in the library of the body worker who wants to go beyond the ordinary.
The Heart of Listening: A Visionary Approach to Craniosacral Work Vol 1 Reader Review .......2006-08-21
Well written with a good index, bibliography and footnotes for each chapter. The author's analogies are also quite helpful as it is really a book that tries to teach a feeling, hands on, touch subject. The diagrams are accurate and easy to follow. At times there are references to techniques that are in the next volume. Volume one deals with the background, history and cerebral/philosophical aspects of craniosacral work. These aspects are a key to how the author practices craniosacral work. This is not just a technical manual of how to shift bones. It deals with energetic aspects of healing as well. As I am a veterinarian, the medical aspects were easy to follow. I cannot speak to how someone with less anatomical training would see the text.
Truth Rings Clear and Beautiful.......2003-07-03
If every Massage Therapy School would teach The Heart of Listening's lessons on "transference" and "counter-transference," I believe Hugh Milne would have provided a direly needed understanding and set of constructive guidelines for therapists who are human and therefore tend to get into trouble when in close contact with other humans.
There are many other extraordinarily helpful and interesting stories, explanations and illustrations to be found in The Heart of Listening. If you believe that truth is beauty and beauty truth, I think you would deeply appreciate Hugh Milne's book. It is a fine creative effort, especially in presentation of both the technical and spiritual aspects of Visionary Craniosacral Work.
Another thing I like about the writing: Milne doesn't take credit for someone else's work. Quite the contrary. I noticed meticulous care in giving credit where credit is due. A certain humility permeates this book, letting the reader know the author is not just knowledgeable in a gentle way, but quite honest. Jockeying for "who's the best" status obviously isn't a Milne characteristic.
hmmmm.................2001-11-14
It is interesting to see such divergent opinions and ratings regarding this book. Does it mean that a person looking for texts on craniosacral therapy should accept the average rating for this book to mean that it is middle of the road? Hmmm....I don't think so. For the person seeking out help with their healing process, craniosacral work is only as valuable as the consciousness of the practitioner is clear and open. Milne writes that "presence is more important than technique." He also teaches that it is important to learn the techniques well and to have a fully-equipped, expert tool bag (realizing that this may take many, many years of practice to acquire). Then the practitioner will have just the right technique that may be intuitively chosen for each individual in their own timing and need. It is also important to realize that no one is the sole authority on craniosacral work. If you have undertaken a journey to incorporate craniosacral work in your practice, it would be wise for you to read many books or articles on the work, including the words of Rollin Becker, Don Cohen, Hugh Milne, Michael Shea, Franklyn Sills, William Sutherland, John Upledger and others. The best way to learn the work is to wipe the slate clean before each bodywork session, before each study session, before each class, and let the cranial wave and dreambody of the person offered before you to teach you what craniosacral work is and what is needed. This includes the practitioner accessing his/her own cranial wave as a wisdom teacher. The truth is--craniosacral work cannot be completely written down in any book or completely taught in any class. It can only be wholly known in the place where there are no words. This book just may be the help and the inspiration for you to be able to arrive in the place of no words and no doing, the time/space where the "breath of life" (Sutherland) is united with the blue print for health. The world needs this work. Let us all learn to listen with our hearts, and keep our minds open in the process.
Not the Definitive Text I wanted..........2001-10-03
After reading Elsa Cort's reviews of this text, I was hoping this would be the "definitive text" for CranioSacral Therapy for me that it was for her. Unfortunately, this text added little to my previous studies. Having studied cranial work from the Cranial Academy and CranioSacral Therapy from the Upledger Institute, this text did little to expand my knowledge. For my money, there are better books in the market.

A must have.......2002-10-28
This book is full of clever tips that made housebreaking very effective. We used the tip on teaching our dog to ring the bell when she needs to go out. I also appreciated the section on cleaning up messes to prevent future problems. It is an easy to read book full of useful information.
Basics are not enough--give us some factual tips.......2000-04-24
The first 21 pages of the book are filler, and add no value on housebreaking your dog. The book does not follow the course of housebreaking your dog to go outdoor. Instead, the book uses a "break your dog on paper in the house" before taking that accomplishment outside. Trust me, you are better off to do it right (outside) first. The book fudges on its step-by-step program by acknowledging that all dogs are different, hence no one program fits all. What about average length of time a 9 week can hold his/her bladder during the night? These and many other tips are absent. The book is very basic.
Dog psychology appropriately utilized to offer great ideas........1999-02-24
Carr & Davis are obviously "dog-knowledgable" and offer many details to their basic three step training process. I especially liked their attempts to break myths such as rubbing a dog's nose in it's "mistake" will let the dog know what is not consider proper dog behavior. Also, they help explain such behaviors as to why dogs sometimes piddle when excited or when their owner comes in the house to greet them. I wish I had read this book before I attempted to housetrain my own dogs!

Not very pretty .......2007-09-25
I am not a picky person,I like lots of bags in all sizes and colors but this book is just terrible! The bags are not pretty at all!I can't even comment on the directions because there wasn't a singe purse in this book that interested me enough to even read the directions. This is one of those books that will sit on my shelf until I do a clean out and then it will be gone.
Another Great Find.......2005-08-15
This book was another good find if you're into making purses for yourself or family, or just like making purses. More great designs and patterns to chose from. Very well done and explained.
Dont bother to order!.......2005-03-15
This book is not that great. It is the same purse pattern (fold over flap sack type bag) just has differant designs. Many are for people that crochet... I dont!! And it doesnt' even show how to crochet. What a waste of money... I sent it back!! I did read all the reviews and orederd it any way. Take heed... don't buy it!!
Sewing Terific Totes & Carryalls is better........2003-03-06
These are a bit, um, avant garde for my taste.
Buy only if you like ugly.......2003-01-29
I didn't look into this purchase enough and if I was smart I would have returned it. I HATED IT! It is out of date and most of the bags looks like something that only a butch lesbian would carry arround. Nothing pretty or fashionable.
Think twice before going for this one. They did a great job at marketing, however the product stinks.

Book Description
Women and men live in different worlds...made of different words.
Spending nearly four years on the New York Times bestseller list, including eight months at number one, You Just Don't Understand is a true cultural and intellectual phenomenon. This is the book that brought gender differences in ways of speaking to the forefront of public awareness. With a rare combination of scientific insight and delightful, humorous writing, Tannen shows why women and men can walk away from the same conversation with completely different impressions of what was said.
Studded with lively and entertaining examples of real conversations, this book gives you the tools to understand what went wrong -- and to find a common language in which to strengthen relationships at work and at home. A classic in the field of interpersonal relations, this book will change forever the way you approach conversations.
Customer Reviews:
really understand each other!.......2007-09-18
i received this book as a gift years ago. i read it and found it to be fascinating as well as enlightening. men and women really do communicate in different ways, and what you "heard" may not be what was actually "said."
now i've bought this book as a gift for someone else. read this book, and share it.
An explanation for "testosterone poisoning".......2007-07-16
In an earlier edition of this book, Tannen said she was "married to a man who is a partner and friend." In the margin, I wrote "What a novel idea!" And when she wrote "It is a continual source of pleasure to talk to him," I wrote "Wow!"
Yes, I was addicted to exclamation points seventeen years ago, but you get the idea. Any woman who has felt frustrated at having to babysit a male ego can benefit from this book, mainly because it gives women a way to understand that we are NOT required to "babysit" our husband / partner / colleague's ego. If we learn to understand the ways in which the men in our lives use the same words as we do, but mean different things by them, then we have a much better chance of connecting on a meaningful level. It is, after all, far better to understand, than it is to denigrate another person's communication style.
As a mystery writer, I have to write male/female conversations. I use Tannen's book often to help me try to "get it right," and I always put this book on my Recommended Reading list for the writing classes I teach.
I can't speak to whether men would get anything at all out of this book. Women, though -- don't you know what it's like to stand and listen to men talking and feel that wave of testosterone leaking out of every pore? Reading YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND helped me not to feel threatened by male conversational styles. It helped me grow up. And I sincerely hope it helps you, too.
Very helpful in improving communication.......2007-05-30
It is not for nothing that therapists say communication is one of the main reasons couples come for counseling. My boyfriend and I found we couldn't talk to each other in mutually satisfying ways, or resolve difficulties through dialogue and, after about 2 1/2 years, were about to break up. As an alternative, I poked around on the net and in bookstores, found this book and suggested we read it together. We've had a few sessions with it so far. Of course one can pick holes in any theory. We don't agree with, or relate to, everything Tannen writes. But, this reading project is giving us a larger framework within and against which to discuss our differences and views. Unlike previous discussions, which generally spiraled into blame-game arguments, we're having some of the best conversations we've ever had. It's not about who's at fault. It's about clarifying for each other - and ourselves - the expectations and intentions behind our words. Our self-awareness and understanding of each other is progressing and so is our relationship, in a positive direction. I highly recommend.
Must Read!.......2007-05-27
Short review: If you hope to understand the other sex, you must know how to communicate. I read this book years ago when it was featured in several seduction books. I recently skimmed it again and found it just as relevent and just as excellent. If you have doubts, nearly 500 other authors have referenced this book. Enough said.
You Just Don't Understand.......2007-05-13
The product sent is in very good condition. The product was sent properly and I got the book on time.

New York Timesbestseller
Bad Cat (487,000 copies in print),

Customer Reviews:
Your Cat;'s Just Not That into you:"What part of Meow Don't Your Understand.......2007-08-22
I thought this book was hilarious and I love cats. It was meant to be a humorous parody of the human to human relationship books out there. It does stereotype cat behaviours, similar to the self help-relationship books that stereotype gender behaviors. That was the spirit in which it was intended since many of us view our relationship with our pets, similar to our other human relationships.
I think the reviewers that gave this a low rating need to lighten up.
Awful.......2006-08-05
I thought I was buying a book that would give me insight into my cat's world. What I got was a joke book and the punchline is always "Your cats just not that into you." Ok, I get it. I guess I'll take the author's advice and take her to the spa, and drop this book off in a donation bin along the way.
humorous but redundant.......2006-02-25
This book is written from the point of view of someone who doesn't like cats. It's amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny.
Very Funny - Easy to Read - Many Laughs.......2005-09-23
My cat wrote this review. He says, "What I like most about books is that, if you lay on one, people tend to stop reading and pet you. I plopped down on top of this one and it felt pretty comfortable. Sure enough, my pet human stopped and gave me a great massage. She says the book explains why we cats can be aloof and disdainful. It has many "Dear Abby" type letters, classified ads, advice and definitions.
One classified ad read, "If you're submissive, read on. Upbeat, Rubenesque Maine Coon seeks good home with endlessly giving, insecure owner who'll try to please me even when I'm having a hissy fit. The right owner will never assume he's doing too much for his pet, or experience moral outrage if I "get lucky" with a gopher. Let's have lunch and talk."
This book also offers a peek into a cat's mind and offers other advice that our humans ought to know. Hey, my human is still laughing over it -- so it must be good. Besides, I like to see my pets amused. You might want to educate your pet humans with this book, too."

Book Description
Lee "Sratch" Perry is arguably the most influential force in Jamaican music. He was the producer that took Bob Marley and the Wailers from a local rock-steady band to world-famous reggae superstars. He has worked for and with the entirety of reggae's heavyweight community as well as many international musicians. Centering on extensive interviews with family members, fellow artists, friends, enemies, and proclamations from the man himself, People Funny Boy delves behind the myth of Perry to give a riveting and revealing account of his life and work.
Customer Reviews:
People Funny Boy:.......2003-03-06
A must read for anyone who thought that they know about Reggea, Rock Steady, Ska - Jamaican music in general. This book must be the ultimate documentary of music as well as the music scene in Jamaica during the 60's,70's, and 80's. It's not just a book about Scratch; it is a book about all Jamaican musicians, singers and procuders of the period. It's the best documented piece of Jamaican history. Someday it will become the most sought after Jamaican history book!
David Kratz ensures that the reader lives moment by moment with almost every musician, producers, and Jamaican artist of the period - some of whom have long been forgotten. He takes you into the studios, delves into the background of each and every artist mentioned in the book, takes to the UK and US with Scratch and Bob Marley, then brings you back to the Black Art Studio where Scratch produced some of the most revolutionary and influential Jamaican music.
Any Jamaican who reads this book will certainly say: "Me know da music deh, but me didn't know sey a Scratch do it." The reader will soon learn that Scratch is the greatest Jamaican music producer. No other producer will ever come close to matching his skill and artistry of Scratch in the studio. Nuff respect to Scratch. He is a true genious! And hat's off to David Katz. He certainly knows how to "ride de rythm". The book is a master piece!
Very, very Upsetting!.......2001-07-24
Scratch your Lee Perry itch. I am awed to have in my hands 536 pages of all things Upsetting. Buy this book, if a so a so.

Isaac Mayer Wise: A Convert's View.......2000-10-20
This book was published in 1992. I found it in a smallish Jewish book/gift store in Minneapolis (St. Louis Park, which my anti-Semitic relatives call "St. Jewish Park.") Can it be that no other Jews have read this book? Isaac Mayer Wise FOUNDED Reform Judaism in our privileged country. He made it possible for us to be both Jewish and American.
Who has said Kaddish for this man? Does anybody, these days, even know who he is?
Wise strove for unity among a small, disparate Jewish community. He was THE wise man of his time... a teacher, i.e. rabbi. Not only was he a pioneer of his time, he a was a pioneer for which American Reform Jews should thank God at every chance.
Do you know about this man? Well, you should...
It's probably not even in print anymore. The first print was "Isaac Mayer Mise, Shaping American Judaism," part of the Littman Library of Jewish Civilization series, Oxford University Press. I have the first British edition, but I know it has been published in the USA. Your know what(!), find out for yourself... If you are part of the Reform movement, it will be more,(much more),than worth your effort...
