Book Description
A fascinating and harrowing account of the men and women who struggle to improve the lives of people in desperate need.
Doctors Without Borders (also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF) is arguably the best known humanitarian organization in the world. These professional men and women deliver emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics and natural disasters as well as to many others who lack reliable health care. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer doctors, nurses and other professionals join locally hired staff to provide medical aid and health care in more than 80 countries.
At the forefront of this organization and its work are the volunteer doctors and other health professionals who risk their lives to perform surgery, establish or rehabilitate hospitals and clinics, run nutrition and sanitation programs, and train local medical personnel. This book follows these men and women on location as they risk their own health, well-being and lives to treat patients in desperate need.
These engaging true stories with dramatic color photographs examine the lives of individual volunteer medical professionals from around the world who:
- Perform emergency surgery in the war-torn regions of Africa and Asia
- Treat the homeless in the streets of Europe
- Understand cultural customs and societal differences that affect health care
- Witness and report genocidal atrocities.
This new paperback edition is updated to include events that occurred following publication of the hardcover.
Hope in Hell chronicles the raucous founding of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the organization. If there is a horrific event, MSF will be there. This book tells why and how.
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put this book down.......2007-09-06
This is an AMAZING book. It takes alot for a book to really captivate me, and Hope in Hell did so about a page into it. I recomend this book to everyone, whether your an avid reader into good stories, or wether your like myself and considering a career with the MSF.
The book makes sure to cover all jobs that you could fill with the organization, with the execption of working for one of their western offices. It covers job descroptions for water sanitation workers, Logistians (excuse my spelling), Nurses, Doctors, and Surgeons. I feel it is great for people considering work with the MSF because it gives you the full story through acounts from actual volunteers, not only does it tell you the nature of the feild work, but also the effect it has on people pschologically when they return home, and how they react once back in their "homes" (and how they realize their only home is with the MSF).
The book also spends time discussing the structural aspect of the organization as well as politics and Drug research.
I bought the book and couldn't put it down, a great read.
MSF brings hope tot he most unimagineable Hell.......2006-01-10
I am a grade 10 student who recently used this book for an english project. I found this book to be highly insightful of MSF thoughts, goals and ideas. The book painted a bold picture that sends a impactful image of our world. It sheds lights on many projects MSF is currently working on and also makes you think of these people who give their lives for strangers in order to provide life.
Technically, the book follows an understandable format and remains interesting throughout while covering a lot of information. Many perspectives are covered which gives the book added depth.
Very Good Book.......2005-08-02
This book really helped putting the finishing touches on my sister's research projects about doctors without borders, especially since many books don't offer as many insights and pictures as this one.
impersonal and repetitive.......2005-02-05
I would say that Hope in Hell is a good read and an interesting book but I have to say that the style is very impersonal, very repetitive, very introductory and does not do justice to the many MSF volunteers who were interviewed for the book.
It is impersonal because there is little more than a name and perhaps the country of origin given as the stories of volunteers are told. I read this book right after reading the Fast Food Nation in which the writer describes his interview subjects in a manner that enables the reader to have a mental picutre and develop a deep relationship with them.
Hope in Hell reads as an introductory piece of writting. Half way through the book I still thought I was reading the introductory chapter.
The sotries in this book were tragic and could've and should've been written in a heart wrenching style but the writer failed to write it so.
I would recommend it as a book to skim through but not a book worth purchasing and adding to your collection.

Chicken Must Have.......2003-05-20
There's more to chicken salad than mayo and celery. This book has many new angles proving that there's more than one way to pluck a chicken.
We particularly liked the "Birds of Another Feather" chapter which uses other poultry in its recipes.
good chicken recipes.......2003-05-08
If you like chicken, this is a good book for you to have. We have only made a couple of the recipes, but they were easy and delicious. Although most are salad, there are other chicken and poultry recipes here, too, so you can satisfy diverse appetites. This book would make a good hostess gift, since everyone can use new chicken recipes.

Piecing curved designs is often a quilter's nightmare, but Vikki Pignatelli's intriguing new technique can take the intimidation out of this daunting task. As presented in Quilting Curves, Pignatelli's method involves surface-pieced appliqué layering using freezer-paper templates and foundation stabilizer. Worked up gradually in jigsaw-puzzle fashion, the individual fabric elements emerge into grandly flowing, swirling designs. Thorough directions and complete pattern templates walk us through nine quilt projects; however, despite its relative ease compared to traditional curved piecing, this technique is best attempted by the more experienced quilter. The author also provides extensive discussions of free-motion stitching, finding design inspiration, working with color, and making templates, so intrepid souls can invent graceful curved-line quilts of their own. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Award-winning quiltmaker Vikki Pignatelli introduces a revolutionary method of quiltmaking that takes the time, trouble, and frustration out of making a perfect quilt. Her easy techniques in Quilting Curves ensure that your designs come together quickly, with beautiful, graceful results--even for beginners. She demonstrates how to use a variation on her method for creating three-dimensional effects. A chapter on creativity provides you with the tools to start creating quilts of your own design.
- Fast, fun, and easy quilt tops that would take weeks to piece using conventional methods come together in hours
- Trouble-free quilts appear to be intricately pieced but are easy to topstitch by machine
- Eight complete patterns help you master the technique before moving on to create quilts of your own design

curves.......2005-09-26
I found the book very helpful. It explained in detail just how to piece a curve so that it looked just perfect. It had examples and small projects in which to try and increase one expertise. I would strongly recommed it to anyone interested in curves in quilting.
The technique had a small resemblence to paper piecing. The explainations were simple and easy to follow. A great book.

Very Pleased!!!.......2004-05-19
I never quilted or sewed in my life until I was inspired by this book. (I did not even know what a "bobbin was!) I sat and read the entire book first, and by the time I was finished, taped together enough freezer paper to my wall to draw an 80x80 inch design. Yes, it took time, but since I read the book thoroughly, I already had answers to all the minute details that were required to make my quilt successfully. And yes, it was at least 200+ pieces. It was my first quilt and sewing project, and my friends and family were amazed. I think the process is worth it if you are looking for a unique, one of a kind design. Since then, I have made a second quilt by the same technique, and am currently staring a new one. Great reference guide. Good book for very creative people who can make their own designs; for those who have an idea in mind but don't know how to achieve it. BUT READ IT COVER TO COVER FIRST!!! By the way, I am working on a 1960 Singer sewer!
defeated.......2003-11-08
I bought this book 2 years ago when I was very enthusiastic about learning to piece curves. I was on a very tight budget and saved for some time to afford the book, so was very excited when I finally got it. Once I started reading through the process, though, I became more and more discouraged.
The technique described does not appear to be simple or fast. In addition, the edges are very obviously top- or blind-stitched which results in a rather amateurish 'crafty' finish.
The simplest designs require a minimum of 40 - 60 tiny paper pieces that must be carefully traced out, marked and coded. They then must be cut out on fabric and matched to each other in order. Trying to be optimistic, I thought I'd give it a try, just to learn the method, so I started with the simplest project. I was defeated before I ever attempted to go to the trouble of making anything bigger.
The artist's work is beautiful and complex, but the designs offered as sample projects are unfortunately cheesy. To produce the kind of results the artist achieves must take literally hundreds of pieces. I was bored with the sample before I ever finished.
Although I greatly admire the artist's work, I was disappointed with this book and the tedious strenuous technique required for unsatisfying results. I look forward to a truly fast, easy and spontaneous technique in a curved piecing book, if there is one.
I feel cheated.......2003-06-06
I bought this book thinking that the author would provide the pattern for the quilt on the cover, but she doesn't. She also doesn't provide any patterns for any of her better quilts. The few patterns that she does supply are too simplistic to be worth making. Also, it's not really piecing at all.
Curves Made Easy!!!.......2002-03-22
I recently received this book as a birthday gift from my Amazon wish list. I read the entire book in just one evening and sat there wishing the fabric store was open at midnight! The technique Vikki uses is very easy and she breaks it down so anyone can do it. She has several patterns you can follow but she also gives you enough information ( and inspiration) to create your own curvy designs. The quilts look more like modern paintings than traditional block quilts and you are limited in design only by your own imagination. Finally, curves in quilting with no "puffy" seams! Thank you Vikki....

Customer Reviews:
interesting subject.......2006-06-10
I thought this book was interesting and it helped to answer some questions. The book could have been longer and it did seem like a fast creation by the author. Also the author did not need to provide information regarding the extent of the injuries that were suffered by its music stars. Common sense will tell you that the injuries of any passenger in a light weight aircraft crash can be horrific. With all of that said, I would still give this book a good rating.
Anyone interested in this topic would certainly find this book interesting.
Music's Broken Wings by Heitman also covers this topic. The Ricky Nelson crash is covered in great detail. That book is larger and does a better job of sparing the reader from the upsetting information.
Both are interesting reading material.
Slightly Enlightening.......2005-10-14
I was disappointed in the lack of content in this book. While I was slightly enlightened with what appear to be some interesting facts, I believe there could have been much more information, resulting in a much thicker book. I finished this in two quick sittings (about a 3.5 hour read). This was a rush job, without a lot of commitment to research. The last few artists barely get a mention. Randy Rhodes, the guitarist that resurrected Ozzy Ozborne's career gets 1.5 pages??
Fantastically Gripping.......2004-12-31
This book takes you into the airplane or helicopter of some of music's most beloved stars on the trips that ended in their death. From Buddy Holly to Aaliyah, you are put in the scene by the very talented author Rich Everitt, and then taken up to the very second of their death. During the story of the last days, there is a flashback through the life of the star ending on the day they die. Another fascinating aspect of this book is how every chapter ends with "Ironies and Oddities". A very interesting list of factoids about the star and any ironic circumstances involving their crash. I loved this book! It truly has something for everyone, the music buff, the amateur or professional pilot, and anyone who just loves to be on the edge of their seat.
Spell binding.......2004-11-03
A friend recommended the book and I was skeptical at first, knowing nothing about flying airplanes. HOWEVER, the stories of the musicians were terrific and the reports of what actually happened in the crash were riveting. My husband and I shared the book back and forth for three days before we finally read it cover to cover between us.
Everitt Rock and Roll Heaven Review.......2004-10-13
I loved getting the real story from a news anchor. The fact that the author was reporting the inaccuracy of first reports made the material especially interesting. I would highly recommend the book to any rock/country fan, especially those who find facts about their favorite performers of interest. I am purchasing for Christmas presents.

Book Description
Intertwining the fate of a country with the life of one Polish family, this book tells the story of a Polish girl who attempted to outwit the Nazis and the Soviets. The events are true and based on extensive oral accounts of the participants and documents released only in Polish and never before available in English, including original Auschwitz letters and Nazi exhumation documents.
Customer Reviews:
Eye-opening account of a little-known part of history.......2007-01-26
This book tells the incredibly true story of a Polish-American woman whose life encompassed most of the major events of Poland in World War II: the Katyn Massacre of Polish leaders by the Soviets; the random abduction of Poles on the streets of Warsaw for deportation to the Nazi concentration camp at Oswiecim (Auschwitz); the Polish underground; the Warasw Uprising (the larger, longer, and lesser known uprising--not to be confused with the earlier Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) and the resultant systematic destruction of the city; and the atrocities of the Soviet "liberation."
Based on the accounts of the protgaonist, the story is compellingly told, with only a few awkwardly written coversations between her and her grandson (which sound more like history lectures than believable dialog), and an occasional mistake with the author's English (my belief is that the author has learned English as a second language). These are minor, technical problems, though, and should not keep anyone from reading this important saga of one family's struggles for survival during those horrific times. The story of Poland's occupation, and its heroic struggle against annihilatio from both their Nazi enemies and their so-called Soviet allies is little known in the West. This book helps to give the reader a true feeling (with a human face)for what went on during one of the worst times in human history.
Little known history of an important part of Central Europe.......2003-04-07
When Hitler swallowed Austria and Czechoslovakia, he got APPROVALS from Britain and France. Poland was the first to resist him - and that is how World War II has started. This is known. The tragic fate of some 6 millions of Polish citizens during WWII is known too. Some 800 years earlier the Kings of Poland granted special priviledges to Jews so as to attract them to Poland and also save them from persecutions elsewhere. Hitler ended 800 years of coexistence of Christian Poles with Poles of Mosesian religous denomination (this is how Polish Jews were known inside Poland) by killing nearly all members of the latter group.
Less is known here in the United States about the sufferings of
non-Jewish citizens of Poland. VERY LITTLE is known about the diabolic JOINT plot of Hitler and Stalin to erase Poland and all its citizens from the surface of the earth. From a historical perspective, this book about Danuta and her life journey provides a wealth of important facts from first hand experience. Stories told me by my father Ludomir Boncza-Brzostowski confirm elements of the story of Danuta, also from first hand experience. He was among those who at the end of Warsaw 1944 Uprising got to the east side of Vistula so as not to surrender to the Nazis; as described in the book, most of those trying to do so were killed by the Nazi artillery. The command of the Polish Army on the Soviet side was taken away from Gen. Zygmunt Berling by Stalin - precisely because Berling tried to help the Uprising. As vividly desribed in the book, Stalin wanted Warsaw destroyed by Nazi hands.
However, the above description of the book might give a totally false impression ! This is also a FASCINATING book about love and atrocity, friendship and war, adversity and solidarity. Do not be fooled by the awkward book title.
Polish Gehenna.......2003-02-01
World War II Through Polish Eyes
By
M.B. Szonert
This powerful story depicts the gehenna of one Polish family during the greatest human catastrophe in Poland's history. Young Danuta and her family struggles through the invasion of Poland, the defense of Warsaw, and the German occupation. They suffer tragic losses in Katyñ, Siberia, Auschwitz and dozens of other concentration camps, in Gestapo and NKVD prisons, on Monte Cassino, in the Warsaw Uprising, and on the Western front. Danuta loses her husband and her father but thanks to the tenacious solidarity of the Polish people she survives the war with two small children. She later tries to begin a new life, remarries in the 50ties, and immigrates to the United States.
The book is easy to read thanks to many dialogs and vivid images. What is striking in this story is the attitude of the Polish women - mothers, daughters, and wives. For example, 19-year old Danuta writes to the Auschwitz commander asking him to show a photograph of her newly born son "Jêdru" to her husband - an Auschwitz prisoner. In a humanitarian flash, the commander actually releases Danuta's husband from the death camp. It reminds me of my own story when my own photograph (my nickname is also "Jêdru") saved the life of my father when he was called to the infamous Pavilion Number 11 in the same concentration camp. Danuta continues her crusade and later fights with the Gestapo to recover the body of her husband, and with NKVD to save her father and brother. Although the women were wise and prudent in those difficult times, the men were often too reckless and were dying unnecessarily.
This work is not only a fascinating story but also a history book. Each episode from Danuta's dramatic life is told in the larger, historical context. Presented with great diligence to assure a balanced approach to difficult issues, the historical context is well annotated and illustrated with documents and photographs. Written with a keen eye and thoroughness, this valuable work brings to light the enormity of the genocide committed on the Polish nation during WWII.

Spellbinding Portrait of Wartime Poland.......2003-01-24
The novel is a spellbinding portrait of a young girl, Danuta, and her family's journey from peacetime Poland to the German and subsequent Soviet occupation. The author provides a balanced blend of historical background along with intense emotional drama. One can sense the intensity of the hardships, suffering and periods of joy and triumphant over ultimate terror, dishevel and human tragedy. Danuta's extreme resourcefulness, perseverance and wit against the German and Soviet occupants allow her and her family to survive eventhough impending danger is always omnipresent. This true account of Danuta's life expounds on actual events such as random transports to concentration camps, Katyn massacre, indiscriminate shootings and beatings, starvation, ect.. The story line includes a microcosm of the brutalities and cruelties exacted upon the Polish population during World War II. This true story is supported with annotations with a bibliography of historical references. The reality of Danuta's life is also supported with copies of letters written by her husband from Auschwitz prison and other documents to further exemplify the harsh and abominable conditions of life in wartime Poland. The story continually returns to an elderly Danuta who is instructing her young grandson on the historical background of Poland's barbaric occupation centered on the conspiracy of the German-Soviet agreements and subsequent betrayal between the two dictators. Poland becomes a battle ground in the quest for power while Polish resistance, including members of Danuta's family, struggles to resist German and Soviet oppression. The apprehension and tension and hope for the end of the German occupation results in the subjugation of Poland by the Soviet apparatus. Danuta's family must adjust to the Soviet regime change which proves to be a desperate struggle to resist total subjugation of Poland. This novel is a recommended reading to better comprehend the human tragedy of Poles during World War II as seen through the eyes of young Danuta.
