As a school boy, Ron George seemed an unlikely airplane pilot. By his own admission, he was scared of heights and was so uncoordinated he couldn't hit a baseball or fly a paper airplane. He went on, however, to become a United States Air Force pilot who flew supersonic T-38 aircraft and logged over 1,400 hours of jet aircraft time during his five-year Air Force career. His flying included 200 hours of combat air time in Southeast Asia as the copilot on an unarmed KC-135 jet tanker refueling American fighters and bombers striking targets in North Vietnam. He and his aircrew witnessed the Communist "Tet Offensive" in South Vietnam in 1968 and participated in the "Pueblo Incident" in Korea. When Ron upgraded to aircraft commander, he was thought to be the youngest aircraft commander in the Strategic Air Command since World War II. He served in Texas, Alaska, Greenland, Newfoundland, Okinawa, and Southeast Asia. Captain George's military decorations include the Air M! edal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Air Force Expeditionary Medal.

This book captures the sights, sounds, smells, feelings, and dry humor of flying and Air Force squadron life during the Cold War with the Soviets and the Hot War in Southeast Asia during the 1960s. The author lives in Austin, Texas.

This is a good read. If you want to relax and have a good time reading a well-told story, you won't do better. Ronnie George is a storyteller in the true sense of the word. His wry humor and easy style put you immediately in the company of a friend, telling the adventures of his life in a way that makes you eager to hear the tale. If you think you wouldn't be interested in a book about a military career, think again. A self-styled "civilian in uniform", the author straightforwardly describes the dramatic, while keeping a clear eye for the absurd. With a primary focus in the '60s, this is a story you may think you know, maybe think you lived, and yet on every page is a unique and interesting experience you didn't have, and never heard! From long, cold flights over the Arctic, to hot combat action in Southeast Asia, the military and technical aspects of the story of a farmboy-turned-flyboy bring home what we ask our military men and women to do to defend us, and do it without ever getting preachy. The often dull routines, that are always dangerous and sometimes heroic, are served up in a way that, while thoroughly satisfying, leaves you wondering when the author will publish some more. Get an extra copy to lend or give to a friend who served in the military, or who just appreciates a good book, because you won't give away your copy.

Bought book for my 88 year old mother. The large print enables her to read and the great stories and the humor kept her interested in this book. She really injoyed this book and now I have started reading it also and find it to be delightful.

My mom bought me chicken soup for the kids, preteen and preteen 2's soul. I fell in love with the series. Well, my Grams and Grandpa's anniversery was coming up so I thought a rose bouquet, a card, and a chicken soup book would be perfect. I looked for a chicken soup book that would be for 60+ people and I found this! It's just great. But one thing thats not true: Anyone can read this and enjoy it! I am just a kid and I liked it. My grandparents definetly liked it. I recommend this book for everybody!

I originally bought this book for some older friends of mine. I ended up reading it all the way through before giving it to them. The stories touched all of my emotions and reminded me of my wonderful grandparents as well(my grandparents raised my sisters and I thru much of our childhood). Readers who haven't received a recent dose of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," shame on you. In "Chicken Soup for the Golden Soul," Mark Victor Hansen, Jack Canfield, Barbara Chesser, Amy Seeger and Paul Meyer present us with one of the best of the series.

I say it is a must-read for anyone on either side of 60. It is a timeless, energized, enthusiastic, motivational book written with golden years in mind, but filled with stories all can enjoy. Will be a great holiday gift for lots of folks on your list.

great double fried fish curry !.......2003-07-09

Great book. Great recipes. My wife and I cooked the double fish curry last night. Its great. The recipe was easy to follow and quick to cook. We already had everything needed - although we used red fish fillets instead of the mackerel or king fish suggested. It tasted really good - smooth and tasty but without that "after curry burp" you get with some of the traditional Indian curries. It looked really good when cooked too - its nice to cook something without knowing in advance how it should look like after the experts have cooked it!
We will definitly give the other recipes a go too.
The information on Burmese (Myanmar?) life is interesting too - obviously written with some compassion.

a bit lean, but well laid out.......2003-06-28

I bought this sight unseen, and without the benefit of any other user reviews to guide me. I'm not dissappointed.

It only has "76 enticing recipes" in it, but they are well laid out. The first 48 pages are background information, and I like having those things in cookbooks.

I feel that the two best features this cookback has are its hardback cover, and its lack of color photos. Hardback books are always better than paperbacks, and to me color photos in a cookbook always seem to imply that they are trying to cover up other defecienies with flashy pictures that will distract people. There are a few pictures, but they are B&W, and not the major focus of the book.

I haven't made any recipes yet, but the recipe layout is one I have never seen before. It appeals to me typographically because of its interesting approach. It looks clean, and easy to read, and I hope more cookbooks emulate the style.

A MUST for rat companions.......2007-08-30

My grandson loves his new pet rat, Roxanne. Unfortunately, his previously also-loved rat passed into pet heaven at less than a year old. I couldn't tell him much about proper nutrition or care, or how long they may live, so I want him to be better prepared this time. Roxanne will probably also give me a kiss for this. This book is brightly illustrated, with good instructions.

The Ultimate Care Guide.......2003-03-31

This is the most complete and accurate guide to caring for pets rats that I have ever read. It is a terrible shame that it has been allowed to go out of print. It is an indispensible reference for new and experienced rat owners. Nutrition, training, history, health...it's all here, along with some really cute photos.

This is just about the best rat book I have ever seen! I really think it deserves 6 stars, but that wasn't an option. :-) It is a exelent beginner's book, but even the most experienced rat owner can learn somthing from it. I only dissagree with Mrs. Ducommun on one point- she says to use 1x1 1/2 inch mesh for a cage. This is too big- a rat could get it's head stuck! Other then that, everything you need to know about rats is in here. The book also gives good information about breeding and showing your rats. A must-read! <:8 )~

I concur with the other reviews in this space. It really is an excellent guide, and the author's website...is also quite helpful. I am truly impressed by the detail of this book, which still maintains an easy reading level (so it's suitable for kids in the 9-12 range right on up to grownups) and an attractive layout. In addition, the author states that she is willing to help *you* with any rat questions or problems and gives her contact information, including phone number! That's dedication!

Some day, I hope to get hold of a copy of her Rat Health Care booklet, but for now this book remains my ratty Bible.

I just wanted to concur with everything that other reviewers have written. This is a superb little book with beautiful pictures of cuddly rats. The only flaw in it I could think of is that it doesn't mention my favorite rat treat (matzoh).

Great Rabbit-Care Book.......1999-08-23

This book is the greatest rabbit care book. It informs you on proper housing, proper handling, proper things to feed your rabbit, what sicknesses to look for in your rabbit, etc. In case you're indecisive about choosing a rabbit, the book also introduces you to over 40 varieties of rabbit and tells you about that rabbit. The book is filled with wonderful, clear pictures. I read this book after I got my rabbit (he's a Mini Rex), and even I learned some new things. I learned how to make some toys for my rabbit to play with, and the thought of rabbit toys had never entered my mind before. This book is perfect for people who would like to learn more about rabbits and rabbit care, and even people who own rabbits might learn something new. I highly recommend this book.

Good pictures, bad info.......2003-03-21

This book is totally inappropriate for anyone looking for how to properly care for a hedgehog. Pictures shown have no relation to the text. For example, a picture with a person holding a hedgehog with bare hands has a caption that says to always hold hedgehogs with a glove- which isn't a very good idea. It obviously wasn't edited very well- some parts are very redundant. Mr. Kelsey-wood obviously didn't put very much time into content- more effort went into photographs. The photographs, however, are great. If you want a book of hedgehog pictures, this is a good one. If you want a book with content on how to take care of hedgehogs, you should buy another book.

Good photos, terrible information.......2001-09-20

All of Kelsey-Woods' books have terrific photos, but poorly organized and often inaccurate information. Sections on hedgehog diet recommend foods that are high in fat, low in protein -- exactly the opposite of what a hedgehog needs. He also recommends the use of gloves while handling hedgehogs -- a true no-no if you ever expect your pet to bond with you. The habitats shown in the book are not large enough for an active hedgehog.

This book is widely distributed, and I am sad every time I see it displayed in a bookstore. Hedgehogs all over the country are receiving sub-standard care because of this book.

Not Worth the Money.......1998-01-01

There is a lot of mis-information in this book. I am a Hedgehog owner and I disagree with many of the handling tips - such as "always wear gloves" - that Mr. Kelsey-Wood recommends. An interesting note: all of the photos show hedgies being held without gloves. This book has a lot of glossy pictures that are not related to the text on the page. This confuses the reader who may be looking for an illustration of the text being read. It is not a very well organized book and should not be used by a novice Hedgehog owner.

Excellent source on ferrets!.......2001-05-26

First of all, let me say what a big help this was to me. It pratically has sections on everything you need to know about ferrets; getting your house ferret-proof, how to bathe them, how to tell if they have an illness, and much more. This book is great for ferret owners and soon-to-be ferret owners. It is a must-have, and I highly recommend you buy it. Trust me, this is bool very helpful.

I used this book to help me in writing a paper for one of my psychology classes at a university. It was very useful in helping me decipher a lot of the medical terms that are associated with the syndrome, and also to clear up many of the myths regarding Tourette's Syndrome. It explained the cause, symptoms, treatment and family issues in a way that was very easy to understand. This book would be very helpful to someone who knows a person with Tourette's Syndrome in the understanding of their disease. There is a lot of good information, and also resources to point you in the direction of other research. I learned several things by reading this book, but I think that the most important thing that this book offers is that it clears up the myths and stereotypes that afflict people with this syndrome. I would highly recommend "The Facts".

Trans by Arthur Mendell and Nathan Broder. Three-quarters of Einstein's book is given over to a discussion of the works in layman's terms. Einstein had the knack of being able to write for the masses yet keep the attention of the musical scholar. I see it as one of the classics on Mozart's works for everyman. His biographical secion at the beginning is charming as well. Overall, a delightful treat for Mozart lovers, a MUST read. He opens his text with "There is a strange kind of human being in whom there is an eternal struggle between body and soul, animal and god, for dominance." You know you are in for a good time.

Essential, but slanted........1999-12-18

For anyone seriously interested in the life and work of Mozart, this is a must read. One must keep in mind, though, that the author is wandering out, lost, in left field sometimes when attempting to capture a real human: a slightly mythic presentation still.

One of the essentials in Mozartian scholarship........1999-10-27

One should be fairly familiar with the life of Mozart before embarking on this book. Full of technical insights, it gives the reader some idea of what was going on in the composer's mind. Chapters which talk about Mozart's compositional influences and the factors which helped cultivate his musical consciousness are particularly informative. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is rather familiar with the story of the man and wants to understand why he was so great.

Benzion Netanyahu's brilliant scholarly study of Don Isaac Abravanel will be of interest to any serious student of medieval life during the period of the Spanish Inquisition. This biography of the statesman, philosopher, mystic, writer, and royal financier is painstakingly researched, using an abundance of primary source material. It is an indepth, masterfully written examination which meticulously scrutinizes and illuminates the life of Abravanel in the royal court and, later, as a Jewish exile in Naples and Vienna, where he solidifies his political and religious world view. Highly recommended as a serious, contemplative work. This is an interesting and enlightening read, particularly for the historian and scholar.

Don Isaac Abravenel lived at the juncture of the Medieval and the Renaissance, and through the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. His writings help preserve the Jews through this troubled time, but also delayed the resettlement of the Land of Israel.

Ben-Zion Netanyahu (father of the hero of Entebbe, and of the recent Israeli PM) first tells of the life of Abravenel, and then discusses his outlook and religion. This unusual treatment works very well. Netanyahu first introduces us to the attitudes and assumptions of the people who lived at the time, which are so often very different than our own, and then discusses how Abravenel fit into, or differed from, that zeitgeist. By building step by step -- World Outlook, View of History, Political Concepts, and finally Messianism, the author educates us about Abravenel's world, as well as his beliefs. I was surpred at Abravenel's prediction that the coming of the Messiah would be immediately preceded by a war between Christians and Moslems.

The endnotes, bibliography, and index are all very helpful.
