Book Description
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder characterized by tremor, stiffness, and slow gait. It affects 500,000 people in the United States, with approximately 50,000 new cases diagnosed annually. But its impact is much wider. Family members with little understanding of the disease often find themselves struggling to help their loved one navigate the complexities of the health care system. Patients wonder, Which treatments are best for me? Will I be able to live on my own? Should I join a drug trial? In this straightforward, compassionate guide, Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman address these concerns and more. They provide a thorough review of the etiology, diagnosis, and current treatment of Parkinson's, with special consideration given to the effect on family dynamics and routines--including the often neglected topics of long-term care and sexual function. The authors also review the pros and cons of various alternative therapies, including nutritional supplements, massage therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine.
Too often, with Parkinson's disease, a loved one serves as medical interpreter, patient advocate, and caregiver. In Parkinson's Disease and the Family, Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman draw on the latest research and clinical practice techniques to offer valuable suggestions for managing patient care and, perhaps more important, for healing the family unit.
Customer Reviews:
This was a good book.......2006-05-19
A comprehensive collection of current and on-going research, treatments and case studies, this amazingly small book provides a great summary of everything you will read about Parkinson's in random web searches. The best part is that it is completely comprehensible for the lay person. I especially recommend this book for family members such as parents and siblings who may not be involved in day to day care-partnering with the Parkinson's Patient, but who may want to have an understanding of what is happening (and what is going to happen) to their family member.
Addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's.......2005-09-05
Parkinson's is a movement disorder which affects 500,000 people in the US and adds thousands of new cases annually, but despite its prevalence, families often have little resources to guide them in considering treatment options, drug trail potentials, family dynamics, and disruptions and adjustments to daily living. Parkinson's Disease And The Family: A New Guide addresses all manner of family concerns and is a top pick for this reason, going where competitors do not in addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's. Especially appropriate for the non-specialist general reader, Parkinson's Disease And The Family is ideal for community libraries.
Book Description
Mexican Mama Sofia Larrinua-Craxton shares her favorite everyday recipes and those popular for special occasions as they have been passed down through the generations. She records the cooking skills she learned from both her mother and grandmother and reveals family secrets that give certain dishes an extra special zing to set them apart. Chapters take the reader through the Mexican day from breakfast to comida (lunchtime), such as Albondigas (meatballs) and Platano Machos (fried plantain) all the way through to puddings, drinks, and snacks.

very approachable.......2007-05-29
I really like this cookbook. I collect cookbooks from all over that focus on home cooking and this one is just right. I first took it out of the library and read it through, the pages are so nice, the weight of the paper, they are all four color. After the first reading I was ready to cook, which doesn't always happen. Some books are just better to read. I made enchiladas suizas, refried beans, and mexican rice and all came out great. There is something very nice and friendly about the tone, sometimes you read a cookbook and it feels like the author is trying to impress you with what a priveleged childhood they had. This lady makes you feel like she comes from a really loving family who loves to eat. I don't mind her substitutions, it all seems real.
Refreshingly different Mexican cooking.......2006-07-09
The recipes offered in this cookbook differ quite a bit from most Mexican cookbooks I have seen - rather than focusing on Tex-Mex cooking or on painstakingly authentic regional dishes, this author has a style of cooking that seems more European-influenced. The result is a unique collection of dishes - for example, Beef Tempura with Middle Eastern Sauce, small bites of shredded beef battered and fried, served with a spiced tomato sauce, or Pacholes, thin seasoned meat patties. I have tried several recipes - some of them are quite involved - but the results are worth it, subtly and richly flavored.
I have taken one star off of my review because of some substitutions the author has offered. I notice that she lived in England, and perhaps as a result of this she lists feta cheese as an ingredient in her recipes - while most Americans can get their hands on authentic Mexican cheeses these days. Similarly, she recommends using canned corn instead of frozen or even fresh.
Combines classic and time-tested home recipes with the motherly tips and advice of an experienced cook.......2005-10-08
A welcome contribution to the "Mama's Kitchen" series, The Mexican Mama's Kitchen: Authentic Homestyle Recipes combines classic and time-tested home recipes with the motherly tips and advice of an experienced cook, such as "When deseeding chilies, be as careful as possible. Try to wear rubber gloves and avoid rubbing your eyes" and "To make vanilla sugar, add one vanilla pod to 2 cups sugar. Set aside for 3 weeks and then mix. Use to sweeten hot drinks as a sugar alternative." Recipes such as Bricklayer-Style Eggs, Green Rice, Black Burner Beans, Mexican Hot Chocolate and many more are presented not only with methodical instructions, but also a brief introduction describing how the recipe has been used in families for generations. A handful of color photographs illustrate The Mexican Mama's Kitchen, a very highly recommended and easy-to-use family cookbook.

Book Description
Discover Exciting New Treatments for Fibromyalgia
Now you can take control of your fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and begin enjoying life again—today! This book dispels the myths and clearly lays out the truth about FMS and what you can do for relief. Inside is compassionate, practical, and immediate guidance for anyone affected by fibromyalgia, including:
·The causes, symptoms, and patterns of fibromyalgia
·How to find the right doctor and avoid costly and unnecessary testing
·The latest drug treatments, including the use of antidepressants and pain relievers
·How to minimize fatigue and sleep disturbance
·Lifestyle solutions to manage your life and your work, such as the importance of exercise
·And much more!
"Fibromyalgia is not a 'clean' disease like diabetes, precisely classified and precisely treated. My own experience has taught me that fibromyalgia is an illness much like other chronic conditions that must be considered from biological, psychological, social, and spiritual perspectives. There has been a great lack of public information on this common debilitating condition, but this book should go a long way toward educating people. Theresa Foy DiGeronimo gives us a sensitive and comprehensive book that will be of tremendous value to people with fibromyalgia."
—From the Foreword by
Joseph E. Scherger, M.D., M.P.H.

A Good Fibromyalgia Resource.......2006-02-06
This book is current and up to date on FM and covers the key issues well. As a resource, it includes an overview of Fibromyalgia, treatments(medical and alternative), therapies, sound advice, and insights on how to manage life and relationships. Easy to read format, and set up so that you can skip around to chapters without being lost.
Informative.......2001-09-08
I have had fibromyalgia for 10 years -due to a car accident. This is the first book I have found to put me at ease whit it. I understand a bit more why I react to certain situations and why I feel the way I do. Basically I feel this is a primer on what is going on in your body. There are so many people who don't understand this problem. It is not a death sentence. This book helps you get on with your life.
Book Description
Blues with a Feeling explores the life, times, and musical creations of a founder of the Chicago Blues style. Little Walter revolutionized blues harmonica playing, and is generally recognized as the greatest innovator in modern blues. Beginning in the early '50s as a sideman with the legendary Muddy Waters, Walter appeared on many of Muddy's classic recordings through the mid-'60s, even after striking out on his own. Walter had several hits, including the #1 R&B songs, "Juke" and "My Babe," and his distinctive, heavily distorted, amplified harmonica style has been influential on all following generations of players. But his life was fraught with tragedy; he died young at the age of just 37, after years of hard living. For years, Walter's life story-even the exact names of his parents and his date of birth-have been shrouded in mystery. Now a trio of blues researchers have unearthed new information about how Walter lived and created the music that made him famous. Blues With A Feeling is an important addition to the literature on this distinctive musical style, and a must-read for any fan of the blues.

Genius of blues and harp.......2007-01-23
A book that finally reveals the true genius of Walter Jacobs and those who emulate him. As a decade long band mate of Joe Lee Bush who learned directly from Walter as noted in this book, I can say with authority that this book really provides a deep view into the man and his incredible talent. All the bands I've ever been a part of, Southside Jukes,The Superstitions,Them Junko King Hats, Magic Blues Band, Spike Driver, Blue Comets and some others have done Walters songs with huge respect and awe!
This book is an authentic look into the blues master of the harmonica Walter Marion Jacobs. You just must read it to understand the man and the music fully. Cudos to these three authors, what a collabration! John A. Williamson
OUTSTANDING!.......2006-04-14
Remarkable job by a trio of authors who really did their homework. I read it when it was first published and have gone back to it many, many times since for reference. I'm actually in the middle of reading it again in its entirety, something I very rarely do with any other book. If you're looking for insights and the scoop on the great Walter Jacobs, look no further. Buy this book now, blues people.
The man behind the legend is revealed.......2005-08-10
Since Little Walter died in 68 it might have been an enormous amount of work to put together all the information offered in this book, which succeeds in revealing who was the man who was behind the legend.
The book is fascinating at least for somebody, who like me is very into the blues and is an amateur harpist.
Too questions for the writers (because not enough clarified in the book): why Chess asqued Little Walter to play acoustically in the 60?.Is there more information about the lung troubles that Little Walter had at the end of his life, and made it difficult to blow his harp the way he used it, for more than 2-3 songs, as quoted in the book?
The Great Dark Story.......2005-04-25
On a par with "Bird" the movie by Clint Eastwood.
Need I Say More!
Fascinating ..........2004-07-28
I have been a Little Walter fan for many years. It's apparent that Tony Glover and his co-authors are, too. They have done a wonderful job of researching Walter's life and telling his story. I also learned a lot about Walter's contemporaries, like Jimmy Rogers and Muddy Waters (to name but a few). And, I have new respect for Leonard Chess, who helped create the Chicago blues sound, and who nurtured those who played it. The discography at the end of the book was very useful to me.
What would make the book better? It would be an accompanying boxed set of CDs with most of the tracks listed in the discography. I have put together my own set of about 50 of them.
Congratulations to the authors.
Customer Reviews:
An extraordinary personal document.......2004-04-29
As a counterpoint to her more comprehensive scholarly work on the holocaust, this book provides several personal vignettes of that period in history. Beginning in New York City the account covers making arrangements for the trip, the author's stay in Vilna, a center of Jewish culture in Poland including elements of daily life, cultural, and political events, her narrow escape from Poland as the Nazi invasion progresses, and the finally agonizing wait in New York as news of the insuing catastrophy arrives in bits and pieces. This book provides insight into what it was like to live through that period in history, and may help those close to them to understand people who actually lived through it.

Filled with lots of ideas for creative napkin presentation to liven your table, this attractive book also offers ideas on how to use napkins as inventive gift wrap and as wonderful accents around the home, such as pillow shams, seat covers, valances, lampshade covers, and table drapes. Clear step-by-step directions and diagrams explain a wide variety of ways to make your own lovely cloth napkins, from simple no-sew techniques (fringed, fused, or pinked edges) to "mistake-proof" machine-sewn methods (including lined napkins, topstitched or decorative-stitched hems, and no-measure miters) to easy serging techniques, plus there are suggestions on ready-made items that make great napkins (such as bandannas, scarves, and hand towels) and on ways to embellish them further (fused appliques, fabric paint).
