4 out of 5 stars Mozambique Mystique, what ? .......2007-01-22

Your classic book on a WWII veteran writing about his experiences during WWII. Gives great insight to the little nuances that occured in the backgroud between the might power of Germany and the United States. I always wondered why we had outposts in all these little countries during the war and after reading this you will understand.
I did meet this author at a conference once which is why I bought the book but had no idea of how material shortages can so readily affect the outcome of a war and how it will drive countries to chase the most obscure objects!

Book Description

Enos Mills (1870-1922) was the quintessential voice of the Rocky Mountains in the early decades of the twentieth century, and he achieved fame as a naturalist and nature writer, conservation pioneer, lecturer, and mountain adventurer. "Enos Mills: Citizen of Nature" is the first full-length examination of Mills and his work, an incisive account of a complex, controversial, and often difficult man who touched millions of lives in his time and whose legacy has great relevance today.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-03-28

I was given this book by my in-laws and at first thought I would never read it. They have a cabin in the Estes Park area, and I had driven past the Enos Mills cabin 100s of times without ever stopping.

But I picked it up and once I started reading could hardly put it down. Drummond did an excellent job of capturing the era, the man and the story all at the same time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the outdoors, nature, Colorado or RMNP. It really was a great story that was very well researched and really captured the spirit of the man.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating piece of scholarship.......2000-02-01

This ranks among the best biographies I have read. Drummond's research is expansive and he synthesizes it all into a very readable, interesting book. He chronicles politics surrounding the formation of the Park Servie and the Forest Service, paints a fascinating picture of early day tourism, and tells the gripping story of an ardent, if sometimes misguided, naturalist. My interest is spurred---I'm going to read some of the books Drummond lists in his extensive biography.

    Book Description

This culinary trend-setter has taken a look back over his more than three decades as a Cajun cook to select some of his favorite recipes. These recipes serve to illustrate not just the development of his personal cooking style, but also that of the Cajun cuisine that he helped to pioneer.

Wilson's commentaries and remembrances complement his recipes in a prosaic style that is as well known, and as unique, as the recipes themselves. Pictures of his friends and family who played integral roles in the development of his culinary techniques accompany the text of this cookbook, which is "garonteed" to help the cook "pass a good time" in the kitchen.

Justin Wilson is internationally known as a Cajun cook and humorist. He is a veteran of both writing cookbooks and preparing his dishes on his public broadcasting television programs for people across the country to enjoy. The companion television series to Justin Wilson Looking Back: A Cajun Cookbook is currently under production for the Public Broadcasting System.

First of all, I can't believe another reviewer knocked this book because it contained previously released recipes; the name of the book is "Looking Back"!!!!!!

Now that I have that off my chest, I love this cookbook. Justin Wilson knows true, authentic cajun cooking (he's native to the area and from the old school). Looking through this cookbook (there are many pictures), I had a certain feel of nostalgia for a different era. The recipes included accentuate this feeling. The stories and antecdotes also contibute to this feeling of yesteryear. My earliest memories are of me and my Dad watching Justin on Saturday afternoons and this cookbook brings back alot of memories (I really hate to just call this a cookbook as it is much more than that). The recipes are very easy to follow and the results are delictable and authentic. For anyone who has ever seen Justin on PBS, you will love this cookbook. For anyone who has no idea who Justin Wison is, this cookbook will give you some great insight into true cajun and creole cooking, from a man who spent his entire life enjoying it.(Justin was cajun when cajun wasn't cool.) I can not emphasize enouph how important it is to appreciate this cookbook for what it is. Justin wasn't some high profile chef, who moved to an area he wasn't from, trying to capitalize on an already popular form of cooking. The recipes are from cooking methods that were passed down to him, and many of them came out of survival more than anything else. Justin Wilson is an icon and this book will make you feel like you knew him.

    5 out of 5 stars Justin Wilson.......2001-09-22

If you know or have seen Justin on PBS, then this book is Justin. Its great, the pictures are worth the price. It truly a shame that he died only a few days ago.

3 out of 5 stars Not Their Best.......2002-10-01

I'm a Memory Makers fan and I tend to like their idea books. This one, however, seemed fairly uninspired to me. Lots of cute pages of cute toddlers doing cute toddler things -- but nothing that really sparked my creativity for scrapping the hundreds of photos that I have of my own cute toddler.

A general scrapbooking book would probably take you just as far as this book would.

5 out of 5 stars Keep returning to this one!.......2002-06-05

This is always out on a table for me to browse at when I get brain freeze for my page designs. There are alternatives presented to doing "traditional" pages and it covers a majority of things that toddlers are into. Would make any scrapper a great gift.

3 out of 5 stars Some good ideas, but not Memory Makers' best.......2001-10-27

Well, for as much as I couldn't wait to get a copy of this, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. Memory Makers' Baby Scrapbooks idea book was great--full of good layout/journaling ideas and beautiful sample layouts to look at. Maybe I'm becoming a scrapbook snob, but the first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was that the majority of the sample layouts just didn't seem up to caliber with what I'm used to seeing in their and Creating Keepsakes magazines. Too much primary colors, simple hand-printed or sticker letter titles, bland papers...I know, it sounds SO pretentious to say that, but I truly am used to seeing different types of pages in the books and magazines I buy. To its credit, Toddler Scrapbooks has a good "Checklists" page to give parents ideas on what to scrapbook that they may not have considered (e.g., funny faces, waking up, daily routines, Sunday school), and on the same page, it mentions that it's a good idea to keep notes on a calendar of: some current favorites(books, songs, etc.), Growth, milestones and firsts...There are also poems, sayings, page title ideas and reproducible patterns at the back of the book which could be useful.

To be honest, this book is probably geared toward a beginning scrapbooker, as simple techniques are covered, and the editors probably want to simply encourage parents to take the time to do this important job of preserving the family history. Scrapbooking can get quite involved, and maybe the simple layouts are there to avoid intimidating the beginner. From this standpoint, it's a good book. However, if you've been scrapbooking awhile, a lot of the info covered here can be found in Scrapbooking periodicals. It definitely wasn't worth the money in my case!

          Book Description

Scoliosis-curvature of the spine-is a disorder so common that twenty states now require screening of preteens. One in every fifty American youngsters is affected by it. While scoliosis is an upsetting condition, it can almost always be treated if detected early.

Written by a scoliosis sufferer, Stopping Scoliosis takes the reader through every stage of the condition. It discusses ways to diagnose scoliosis before exploring all the options for treating it-both surgical and non-surgical. The advancements in bracing and surgical techniques that have been made in the past few years are examined in detail. Also included are methods for managing pain, tips on how to prepare for surgery, and compelling patient stories from people of all ages.

Endorsed by the National Scoliosis Foundation, this is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on scoliosis available.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teens!.......2004-01-09

As a teen with scoliosis, I found this book extremly helpful from the start. It told me everything I needed to know, even through the major sugery, which I had to have. I would reccomend this book to anyone with scoliosis, especially teens.

          4 out of 5 stars Good information.......2000-06-28

I have scoliosis and have gone through bracing and surgery. This book gave me a better understanding about the disorder and it's treatment options. The first-hand accounts provide a personal face, reminding the rest of us we're not alone! Some of the material about surgery and bracing is outdated, but it's a good book for anyone facing scoliosis treatment.

3 out of 5 stars Information is dated.......1999-05-24

Based on other books and research on the web, I found the information to be rather dated. However, the personal stories of people coping with scoliosis are helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone facing treatment of scoliosis.......1997-10-24

I read this book in 1994 right before I had surgery for scoliosis. I identified with the author's story so strongly that it brought tears to my eyes. Nancy Schommer, who had scoliosis herself, provides a personal, riveting first- person story along with plenty of factual information and advice. This book is perfect for teenagers with scoliosis who feel depressed, confused, and like there is no one who can identify with them. Schommer wore a brace and had surgery for scoliosis and provides accounts of both. The book also includes a list of reputable hospitals and foundations. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

            Book Description

The author of the acclaimed biography Byron: Child of Passion, Fool of Fame brings to life a closely fo-
cused portrait of another great romantic artist, Frédéric Chopin.

At twenty-one, Chopin fled Russian-occupied Poland for exile in France. He would never see his native country again. With only two public concerts in as many years, he became a star of Parisian society and a legendary performer at its salons, revered by his great contemporaries Schumann, Liszt, and the painter Eugène Delacroix. Blessed with genius, success, and the love of Europe’s most famous—and infamous—woman novelist, George Sand, Chopin’s years of triumph ended with his expulsion from paradise: less than two decades after his conquest of Paris, the composer lay destitute and dying in the arms of Sand’s estranged daughter, Solange. Chopin’s Funeral is the story of this fatal fall from grace, of an Oedipal tragedy unfolding, and of illness and loss redeemed by the radical breakthrough of the composer’s last style.

Richly textured and artfully compressed, Chopin’s Funeral is an intimate close-up of an embattled man, grappling with conflict on all sides: family violence, political passions, and, not least, his own dependency and pride. With consummate skill Benita Eisler tells the story of the artist as exile, of an explosive love affair, and of worlds—private and public—convulsed by momentous change.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars piano student.......2007-01-09

I found this book to be very revealing about Chopin, the way he wrote, his torment and selfishness behind his writing.

2 out of 5 stars Flowery Language, Hideous Death Mask, an Error or Two..........2006-09-29

Most Chopinophiles who read "Chopin's Funeral" will have already read works on the composer, and will find little that is new here. As has been noted by others, the title is misleading (unless the author is telling us that Chopin's life was in fact a long pre-mortem funeral), but the few introductory pages describing Chopin's funeral at the Madeleine are thoroughly engaging.

Eisler does present some more or less newish, but not original, material. Among the more interesting relate to 2 of the 4 illustrations. For example, she suggests that the famous unique photo of Chopin was taken in 1846, and not mere months before his death in 1849. I suppose it is possible. The chronically ill Chopin certainly must have appeared to be on the verge of death many times, before the year of his actual demise.

She also publishes a photo of a hideous "original" death mask that will shock most readers who have only seen the apparently "sanitized" mask sculpted after Chopin's sister supposedly complained about the agonized and gruesome appearance of the first version, which bears no resemblance to Chopin aside from the pouty lower lip of a painfully grimacing mouth; in addition, Chopin appears to be bald! But who knows what the ravages of his final illness did to his appearance? In any case, readers who see this shocking photo for the first time, which will be most readers, are sure to be stricken with disbelief that it is actually their dear Chip-Chip at all. This death mask is nowhere to be found among "Google Images"; only the famous, oft-published "elegant" mask is widely available. For admirers of that well-known "life-like" death mask, this one will be a nightmare.

Eisler is solidly sympathetic with Chopin re: the breakup with Sand, while admitting that Chopin was not the easiest partner to deal with... no new ground here. Her synopsis of Sand's roman a clef about Chopin, "Lucrezia Floriani", is very clear and detailed; not all Chopin bios give such a good description of the plot. (Sand's book itself is rather boring, and would be excruciatingly so were it not about Chopin, dwelling on minute character descriptions page after page... it could use a few throbbing members, or car crashes! In fact, Eisler herself seems to take her cue from Sand, focusing on the character and motivation of those in Chopin's world.)

The language will be a tad flowery for many tastes, often written in a Harlequin romance style. The book also happens to include a factual error or two, stating on page 115:

"Returning from New York in 1852, Julian Fontana [Chopin's amanuensis] committed suicide in Paris, three years after Chopin's death."

Yet Fontana published most of Chopin's posthumous works in 1855. He did commit suicide, but in 1869, TWENTY years after Chopin's death. This kind of error could only be made by an author who took on Chopin as a "project", with little or no previous familiarity with standard sources. Of course this blunder brings suspicion on other material... we don't like to feel we must do an author's editing and fact-checking. ARE YOU LISTENING, KNOPF?

Eisler also mistakenly states that Chopin's cellist friend Franchomme was "the inspiration for the only music Chopin would ever write for an instrument other than the piano", meaning the cello. Those who have an actual rather than a commercial interest in Chopin know that he wrote also for the violin (Piano Trio) and flute (Rossini Variations), both pieces completed before Chopin's arrival in Paris and subsequent friendship with Franchomme, though the Trio was PUBLISHED, and no doubt finally edited, in Paris after his arrival. One of his cello works, the Polonaise, was written before his Paris period. We don't mention Chopin's writing for voice and, technically, orchestra.

The book's rough-edged,"faux-deckled" pages look nice enough, but are a major pain when the reader wishes to riffle-search for a specific page. The dust jacket is well done, imitating a quarter-calf 19th century binding.

"Chopin's Funeral" appears to be a limited gleaning of Chopin scholarship by an author who wished to make the material "romantically readable". The serious student would do better to go to the sources. If you just want a beach read, "Chopin's Funeral" will do; we gather that the author aimed no higher.

1 out of 5 stars Chopin turned in his grave at the publication of this biography..........2006-09-10

As a Chopin fanatic, I have done a lot of reading about his life. "Chopin's Funeral" is a terrible portrayal of this composer's personality and life. Ms. Eisler turned Chopin into a whining fruitcake, when in reality he was quite the opposite. Also, Ms. Eisler credited several myths about Chopin as fact (such as his homosexuality, when there is no proof whatsoever that Chopin was gay). On top of all this, the book was incredibly dull and slow. I got 2/3 of the way through this book before I slammed it shut in disgust. If you want to read an interesting biography of Chopin that let's his true personality come through, read "Chopin" by George Richard Marek.

            5 out of 5 stars A Short Glimpse Of A Life.......2005-08-05

Owing to the relative shortness of this book, it offers a glimpse into the life of Chopin. It focuses much of its attention on the private lives of Chopin and his partner George Sand.

Any biography of Chopin has to include the period of his involvement with Sand, for it was the most important relationship of his adult life. The book tells of how the two lover's relationship finally turned into a parent/offspring situation, with Sand regarding Chopin as just another of her children.

It seems that Chopin was, because of his illness or personality or probably both, needed someone to take care of him. Even negotiations with music publishers werer entrusted to friends. Before the break-up came to Chopin and Sand, Chopin's health was already getting worse, and when he was out on his own again it wasn't long before tuberculosis took its toll.

Chopin was a man that constantly lived beyond his means, was forever in debt, had no qualms about borrowing money from family and friends knowing full well he would never be able to repay them. He was a man of rather common background, but moved into the world of aristocracy and artists. Along the way he picked up aspects of noble snobbery and prejudice, and it is revealing to know that of all his piano students (of which there were many), most were persons of the nobility and aristocracy. It was a subject of braggadocio to have studied piano with Chopin, and he was one of the most expensive piano teachers in Paris. There was no piano progeny of Chopin, no great student that ever became a leading pianist or musician.

But these are but human facts. All humans by nature are full of good and bad traits. It is Chopin's music that is the important thing, and the author touches on some of it in this book.

A good introduction to the life of Chopin, his music, and the times it was written. Recommended!

            5 out of 5 stars Chopin's Funeral.......2005-07-09

This book is an amazing account of Chopin's life story. It has a great deal of information about his compositions and the inspiration behind them. Beautifully written and an interesting story. I would highly recommend it.

                Book Description

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, born in 1903 and scion of a preeminent
Lithuanian Orthodox family, was one of the most towering intellectual figures of American Orthodoxy in the twentieth century. After receiving rabbinic ordination and completing his studies toward a Ph.D., he immigrated to America where he served as the Rosh Yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University. As the leader of centrist Orthodoxy in America for more than fifty years, his many accomplishments included his founding of the Maimonides School in Boston in 1937. Rabbi Soloveitchik served as the intellectual and spiritual force behind the Maimonides School from its founding and was responsible for its innovative curriculum.

Synthesizing American educational methodologies and European Orthodox approaches to education, the Maimonides School became a prototype for an American Orthodox educational institution. Unique among contemporary Orthodox day schools, the coeducational nature of the classes at Maimonides, and to some extent the curriculum, was groundbreaking. Characterized by academic excellence in both Judaic studies and other subjects, the school offered boys and girls exactly the same education. Rabbi Soloveitchik's school was particularly innovative by offering Talmud classes to girls on the same level as boys.

The Maimonides School became a paradigm for the fledgling Orthodox Jewish day school movement nationwide. The character of the education there influenced later developments in the Orthodox community, such as the emphasis on higher level Torah study for women.

By articulating a philosophy that advocated both traditional Orthodoxy as well as modernism and Americanism, the school gradually affected Boston's Orthodox community, which came to be guided by its principles. As Seth Farber points out, the school, once rejected by the Jewish establishment in Boston, was eventually embraced by it. A community that saw no contradiction between democratic values and traditional Orthodox lifestyle emerged in Boston. This modern Orthodox community ultimately represented a significant voice in Boston's Jewish and America's Orthodox cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Boston Jewish History and the Rav.......2007-09-12

If you are interested in the history of Jewish education in America, this book is a fascinating read. For those who want to hear about Rav Soloveitchik's early days and some of his philosophy, the book tells about how he came to Boston and how he came about founding Maimonides School. The chapter on Coeducation & Women Studying Talmud focuses on the history of women's Jewish education and speculates about why the Rav agreed to coeducation at Maimonides. I cannot say whether all the author's facts are accurate, but I can say that Latin was taught at Maimonides School well into the 1970s (and not just in the 50s and 60s), as that is when I studied Latin there.
