Book Description
"In a forty-year business career we won't go through a period like we went through in the last five years."
-Kevin Ryan, CEO, DoubleClick
The commercial and cultural explosion of the digital age may have been born in California's Silicon Valley, but it reached its high point of riotous, chaotic exuberance in New York City from 1995 to 2000 -- in the golden age of Silicon Alley. In that short stretch of time a generation of talented, untested twentysomethings deluged the city, launching thousands of new Internet ventures and attracting billions of dollars in investment capital. Many of these young entrepreneurs were entranced by the infinite promise of the new media; others seemed more captivated by the promise of infinite profits. The innovations they launched -- from online advertising to 24-hour Webcasting -- propelled both the Internet and the tech-stock boom of the late '90s. And in doing so they sent the city around them into a maelstrom of brainstorming, code-writing, fundraising, drugs, sex, and frenzied hype
until April 2000, when the NASDAQ zeppelin finally burst and fell at their feet.
In the pages of Digital Hustlers, Alley insiders Casey Kait and Stephen Weiss have captured the excitement and excesses of this remarkable moment in time. Weaving together the voices of more than fifty of the industry's leading characters, this extraordinary oral history offers a ground-zero look at the birth of a new medium. Here are entrepreneurs like Kevin O'Connor of DoubleClick, Fernando Espuelas of StarMedia, and Craig Kanarick of Razorfish; commentators like Omar Wasow of MSNBC and Jason McCabe Calacanis of the Silicon Alley Reporter; and inimitable Alley characters like party diva Courtney Pulitzer and Josh Harris, the clown prince of Pseudo.com. Together they describe a world of sweatshop programmers and paper millionaires, of cocktail-napkin business plans and billion-dollar IPOs, of spectacular successes and flame-outs alike.
Candid and open-eyed, bristling with energy and argument, Digital Hustlers is an unforgettable group portrait of a wildly creative culture caught in the headlights of achievement.

Boring - lost interest.......2003-07-11
This book is snippets of conversations from people who were influences in the .com era. Unfortunately, there are so many people, I have no idea who JOHN is or what project he was related with. And I don't care. The book does nothing to tell a story. Its not really a book...its more like journal someone would use to write a book.
I am very interested in the real-life stories of .com businesses...how they got started, how big they got and how they fell from grace.
This is not one of those books.
Content interesting but structured badly.......2001-09-01
The content of this book is interesting and even fascinating at times. However, the way the content is structured makes it difficult to read and understand. Essentially, the authors have conducted many interviews of the key players of Silicon Alley companies in New York. The interviews provide a story of the rise of Silicon Alley from 1995 to 2000. What makes the story so interesting is the rapid rise of the companies such as theglobe.com and then in 2000 the rapid fall. There are many companies stories in the book and also a description of New York culture through-out the period.
The whole book would be more interesting if it had been organised in chapters according to each company. Instead the book is organised by themes like "The New Worker". The chapter then contains partial segments of interviews from many interviews conducted which help to understand the theme. This causes quite a bit of confusion, because it is similar to skipping from one music track to another very quickly . It would have been better for the authors to do as little work as possible an simply presented the interviews as they were created. This would have turned the book into a narrative of easy and historically fascinating reading.
Really NOT worth reading........2001-08-17
This 'book' is nothing but a collection of stutters from too many people. There is no central character to follow. Its really hard to stay motivated in reading this.
Great book!.......2001-07-26
Weiss and Kait have written the greatest book about Silicon Alley tycoons I have recently read. Kait and Weiss are truly the Woodward and Bernstein of the year. The book has many insights. For example, when TheGlobe.com started paying their workers with pizza, you really got the feeling like maybe, even though pizza is good, it isn't as good as actual money. And Josh Harris really went a little overboard with that three-month party. Two months would have been enough! Was that why the Nasdaq crashed on April 17--a day that will live in infamy? Weiss and Kait think it might have been a factor. I recommend this book to anyone who lives in Manhattan and used to work for an Internet company that is now out of business and is under 25 and is unemployed and doesn't think it would be fun to be paid with pizza!
up, hustle, and out!.......2001-07-20
The best non-fiction uses its subject matter to provoke thought of a variety of issues. I found "Digital Hustlers" to be exactly that: a brilliant expose of how the "Gotterdammerung" effect took its toll on all aspects of late-nineties startup culture. The book collects powerful stories from all sides of this deflated, polygonal zeitgeist and presents them with clarity in a modern format.
Being in a German synth-rock band, I found the book's philisophical implications most interesting. History continues to repeat itself and we shall never forget.
Not to end in too heavy-handed of fashion, but I would like to commend Kait and Weiss on their triumph. They have succeeded in capturing a brief but potent era in America's history and exploding it onto the written page.
I found it very interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Not the best book out there!.......2007-08-11
Save your money, just do pushups, pullups, situps, and run or swim. You may enjoy the sections on the history of the Seals but over all the book was just the above mentioned exercises with workouts that changed the order of the exercises around on different days. I'm 50 years old and the workouts were not very tough at all.
Sorry to be negative on this review, but there just wasn't much to the book that you probably weren't already doing if you included body weight exercises into your normal workout regime.
Should have bought a dvd.......2005-09-19
Great work out, but its to darn hard to read the words, look at the pictures and do the stuff. Next time its a DVD
No nonsense.......2005-01-25
This is a good book for calisthenics and stretching exercises. The descriptions are easy to follow, and every exercise is illustrated with several photographs plus (what I really like) a drawing showing the muscles used in the exercise. Is it well known that stretching and certain exercises such as squats can be dangerous if done improperly. Perhaps the best feature of this book is that SPECIFIC warnings are given for a lot of these exercises about the dangers involved. I have already modified my strength training routine based on the advice given in this book. It is commendable that a book of this sort avoids "no pain, no gain" stupidities, and instead offers exercises that are founded on sound physiological grounds.
The tough get going..........2004-07-13
Navy SEALs (Team members of BUD/S which stands for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) are a group whose training physically and mentally is tough, demanding, and requires ability far above that of most men. Most men will quit before passing through the months of before being permitted to wear the SEAL insignia. For those who do make it through they are extremely skilled and have a right to be very proud.
This book is not an official workout programme or an official Navy SEAL document. However the man who put it together, Commander Master Chief Dennis C. Chalker, is a SEAL. Now retired, he reminds people that one don't stop being a Seal -- one is a member of the Team until he dies. One of the things that makes BUD/S training so hard is that in addition to being tough every minute he can quit simply by ringing the bell and saying 'I QUIT!' A lot like fitness in real life - you can quit, or you can succeed; it is up to you.
In this book there is a little bit here and there about the history of the Navy SEALs. Lots of their training is secret, and much of their routine is kept from public eyes because of the nature of their missions. BUD/S training is heavy on running and heavy on swimming. Most of the book is pretty standard exercise manual content, concentrating on particular exercises that are used in training. They have motivational quotes from SEALs throughout the text.
Warm-ups and Cool-downs
Warm-ups and cool-downs concentrate on big movements that involve large muscle groups, just to get the body tuned up and blood and oxygen flowing through the muscles. It also gets the heart pumping more to be ready for the coming exercise. These exercises also include stretches that limber up the muscles.
Stretches are often the most overlooked part of an exercise routine, but just from simply counting the pages in this book you can see the importance it should have. There are 40 pages of stretching exercises, and 60 pages of basic calisthenics, which is what people think of when they think of exercise.
One good thing about the descriptions of the stretches and exercises in this book is that they list advantages and disadvantages of the exercise, and warnings. What will this exercise help you do? What are the problems in doing it? What should you be warned about? For example, with the Achilles stretch, the warning is to not overdo it by overstretch, because that is easy to do.
Calisthenics
Calisthenics are the core of fitness programmes for most of the military, and that includes BUD/S. One thing that is needed is a place to do pull-ups.
Free Weight Training
This book shows very basic weight training exercises. This is not a body-builder book that will concentrate on each individual muscle to maximize each one, but it does concentrate on overall strength building. SEALs need to be strong, not necessarily good looking.
Running and Swimming
This book does not give much detail about these. There are just three pages on running and five pages on swimming. Swimming in BUD/S usually involves equipment and scuba kinds of events so it is difficult for the person at home to do these. For swimming, BUD/S training prefers the basic side-stroke. For running, it gives some distances and advice, but that's about it for running. One thing that anyone who really wants a taste of BUD/S training is to do sand running in boots. Don't try this without being in good shape.
Workout Schedules
This small section shows just how tough the training is. It starts out easy enough - low reps and low number of sets for basic exercises like push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups, not too much running or swimming, but within a matter of weeks the dedicated are pulling 20 sets of 25 sit-ups (and yes, the math makes that 500 sit-ups) and running 13 miles a week at a fast pace and more pull-ups than anyone would ever think possible!
Airborne, Nutrition, Team, Motivation
These small pieces at the end talk about the addition stuff that SEALs do. One advantage of working out so hard is that one can eat almost anything and still lose weight! SEALs during some weeks of training are shoveling in up to 6000 calories a day and still dropping weight. So SEAL nutrition isn't really what is called for in civilian life certainly. BUD/S graduates attend Basic Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning Georgia for basic parachuting, and this is talked about.
This is a tough book, and it is demanding. Because of that, it might actually be discouraging to an extent for people who can never reach the level of doing all that SEALs do. But don't let that discourage you - do your best, and this book will help.
Very Good Book.......2004-07-10
This is great book to have if you want to get fit but dont have a gym or weights. There are pictures of all the excercises.
The book has the Seal workouts phase 1& 2 and also phase 3 which is very tough. There is also a section about weight training if you want to add that in as well although most of these workouts centre around Pull-ups, push-ups and sit- ups and running. Nutrition is covered ,but not as well as i would like so thats why i give the book only 4 stars..but apart from that i would rate this book highly.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting, Middle of the Road Starter Vegan Cookbook.......2006-12-14
This was one of the first vegan cookbooks I ever bought, and I thought it was a great starter cookbook. I found the recipes REALLY simple and approachable, given that I had almost no cooking experience at that time. Recipes generally have between 2 and 5 steps, clearly laid out in list format as 1), 2), 3), etc., and the steps are really simple and non-threatening for novice cooks (e.g. "Chop the mushrooms finely. Saute in the oil until tender" is a typical step). I generally liked everything I made, my two favorite recipes being the Macaroni, Mushroom, and Tofu Casserole and the Spicy Tofu Scramble with Red Pepper and Tomato.
I would agree with other reviewers that this isn't the best cookbook if you're going to be cooking for non-vegans, and I'd like to point out that when recipes call for "Nutritional Yeast" they are definitely not not NOT (as suggested by another reviewer) calling for Vegemite, which yes, is totally disgusting to most people (including me!), but actual Nutritional Yeast, such as that made by Red Star and sold on Amazon
.
All that said, I'd agree that there are better vegan cookbooks on the market, particularly if you have any cooking experience. I would recommend this cookbook, but only as a supplement to one of the better, more comprehensive vegan cookbooks such as Robin Robertson's Vegan Planet or Sarah Kramer's How It All Vegan, or Isa Moskowitz's Vegan With a Vengence.
Bottom line: This cookbook gave me cooking confidence as a new, transitioning vegan, but I've moved on to better cookbooks and rarely look back.
not bad.......2006-07-27
I'm reviewing the second edition.
This is a nicely presented book. Quantities are all given in the various different measurement systems and the author includes multiple names for ingredients when they have them.
I wouldn't really class this as "easy" though. Some of the ingredients are hard to find where live and are probably hard to find outside of Britain (tinned pease pudding, for example) though this is forgivable as recipes calling for obscure or specifically Brittish ingredients are kept to a minimum. But the layout isn't really very easy to follow either. Sometimes 5 or more steps are combined into one. And I would have liked some pictures of finnished products.
There are some unusual recipes in this book. I haven't been game to try the banana and spaghetti curry, for example. Or the plums with avocado topping, or many of the recipes calling for avocado. But of the recipes I've tried most have turned out well (even if somewhat deviated from the instructions).
Creative but Bland..........2000-02-04
Many of the foods are very bland. Europeans are used to this, but Americans require more flavor in their food. Omnivores will find these foods almost entirely too strange to even consider eating, and several recepies call for either weird combinations or ingredients that are too expensive or too hard to find. "Nutritional Yeast", for example, is sold under the Australian brande Vegemite, and most Americans find it to be disgusting. It is also expensive (I'm Australian,so I like it, but my friends hate it). My advice? This is an imaginative book with many ideas, but don't be afraid to modify. I haven't tried that chocolate cake yet, but since reading the other review, I don't know if I'll be brave enough to!
Lesson: Don't judge a book by its cover........1999-12-24
Doesn't the moist chocolate cake on the cover look delicious? Don't you wish you knew how to make a wonderful vegan chocolate cake that was moist and rich? Well, I'm sorry to say, you won't learn it from this book. Although, the book is full of new ways to prepare old favorites, if you are an American, the European terms, serving sizes and flavor combinations may be a bit of a turn-off. However, if you are the adventurous type, you may welcome the new taste experience. Just, do yourself a favor, and stay away from the chocolate cake.
User-friendly and imaginative cooking.......1999-11-20
I am a vegan and I've really enjoyed the dishes in this book. The only problem I have with it is that there are few dishes omnivores would appreciate. When you become a vegan, your taste changes somewhat and more foods become appealling. Those trying to use the ideas in this book to cook for nonvegans may need to make some changes to make the dishes enjoyable for those with more limited culinary experiences.

Very poor. Don't read........1999-06-11
This book covers various aspects of dog training and care. But it has many flaws. It was originally written in German and then translated into British English. It has not been adapted to American audiences using American terms (examples: only the one-year rabies vaccination is mentioned, Celsius is used instead of Fahrenheit, id micro chips are referred to as "name plates"). The information provided only touches on the surface of topics and provides no depth. The book is full of sweeping generalizations. As a result, the book repeatedly presents incorrect information. There are many great dog books on the market, but this isn't one of them.
Book Description
Master Pattern Included
A NEW BABY - how wonderful! You will have so much fun sewing for that special baby. All it takes is a good pattern, a little fabric, a little time and love. It is fun to show off a baby with adorable outfits made by you. You can dress your baby any way you choose. It will not always be this way because in just a few years, they will have their own ideas as to what they wish to wear.
You can use a great variety of fabrics, appliqués, laces and other trims. It used to be that all little girls were dressed in pink and the boys in blue. This is no longer so. All types of fabrics and colors are now used for both boy and girl babies. Just remember to choose soft materials as babies have very soft, sensitive skin.
Our goal for writing this book is to provide you with all the patterns you need for the baby's first year with up-to-date and complete instructions for sewing these garments. We have included fabric information, yardage requirements, cutting instructions and the correct stitches to use for the different fabrics.
The book has eight sections. The first section has general sewing information. Section two contains cutting and sewing instructions for baby's nursery items. The last section has thirty-five appliqués which can be used on all the garments and nursery items. The remaining sections have complete cutting and sewing instructions for at least thirty garments plus many variations.
A master pattern is included for at least 30 designs, all in sizes newborn to 18 months. There are many variations of T-shirts, sleepers, kimonos, rompers, jogging suits, sweatshirts, sweaters, pants, shorts, overalls, dresses, panties, bibs and 35 fun appliques. You can create a beautiful nursery to welcome baby home. Instructions are included for bumper pads, comforters, crib sheets, receiving blankets, bath towels with hoods and wall hangings.
This book has easy-to-follow sewing instructions with clear illustrations, time saving techniques and the most up-to-date sewing methods. All styles and creative ideas are shown throughout the book in full colour photographs.
Some of the pattern pieces are interchangeable so you can make many variations of garments, using the same pattern pieces. In the book it also explains how you can make minor changes in the design to obtain different effects.
The multi-sized master pattern is printed on durable white paper with colour coded lines for each size. The patterns are printed on both sides of the paper so we could include as many sizes and designs as possible. Trace the patterns using tracing paper or tracing cloth made of transparent pressed fibers.
All of the master pattern pieces include 1/4? (6 mm) seam allowances. This is the best seam allowance to use when sewing baby clothes. You can use a regular sewing machine or a serger/overlock machine.
Each master pattern includes four sizes: Small to Extra Large. Choose the pattern size by comparing the baby?s height and weight to the measurement chart.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Module Patterns.......2005-10-07
The patterns fit perfect to my grandson. I live in Argentina and I could not get so easy patterns in modules that allow you to create different garments. If you follow the explanations you will not have any problem in sewing because they are very clear.
I recommend the book because it is excellent.
Great clothes for kids!.......2005-09-28
When my son was born, I was really frustrated by the lack of commercial patterns available for little boys. It's a wasteland; I had 800 choices of sundress but no comfortable, durable patterns that didn't involve daisy applique!
I stumbled across Kwik Sew while taking my machine in to be serviced and it has been invaluable. I can't praise the patterns too much. The sizing is excellent, the patterns go together unfailingly (and anyone who's ever struggled with a poorly drafted pattern knows how frustrating it is when they don't!) and there are an almost limitless variation to explore. I've made dozens of clothes, from shirts to jumpers to pants and coats, even his first Hallowe'en costume. I don't own a serger but the patterns still finish and wear beautifully, just with a close zig zag.
My son has now graduated to the toddler book and it's just as well designed. This book is invaluable and you will NEVER find better infant patterns for the money. My copy has been lent to a number of expectant friends (sewers and non-sewers alike) and the book always comes back to me with "I'm returning your book. It's so fantastic, I've bought my own copy!"
The best book for baby garment.......2004-08-03
I started sewing to make something for my coming baby, which means I was new to sewing. Yet I was able to prepare almost the complete wardrobe for my baby with this book.
The patterns and instructions are SUPERB.
People wouldn't belive they're homemade unless I reveal so.
Plus there are many options for variation if you want, and after studying carefully, it wasn't hard to imagine some variation myself.
I learned a lot, saved a lot of money, and could calm down the anxiety of the third trimester sewing for my baby.
I recommend this book to any people with a little bit of knack for craft and and time. Just a word: buying a serger (in addtiion to a sewing machine) will save you a lot of time.

Book Description
The lummox is Mike Magnuson, your friendly neighborhood big guy with a foul mouth, a spare tire around his midsection, and a tender heart, and these are his years working in factories, hanging out in taverns, befriending reprobates, going to college, having troubles with the law, and living with crazy jazz musicians and lesbianseparatists. When a mysterious phantom enters his life, he sets off on a quest todiscover the true meaning of lummoxness, and what he learns along the way is both shocking and hilarious.
Written with honesty and self-effacing wry humor, Lummox is an exceptional story of manhood at a time of its redefinition, a book that will leave you laughing out loud in recognition and cheering for lummoxes everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
A most articulate and hilarious read.......2005-01-12
Mix the warm folksy regionalism of Garrison Keillor with the blue collar sensibility of Jeff Foxworthy and the gleefull yet satirical crudeness of George Carlin along with the linguistic dexterity of Bill Bryson, add a touch of sheer juvenile head banger mentality and ex-jock machismo and chase it all down with several pitchers of cheap beer and you have Mike Magnuson's uniquely voiced memoir.
Depicting Mag's slow evolution from long-haired college drop-out ne'er do well to college graduate back to factory worker (Mr. Magnuson is currently a college professor), LUMMOX fills itself with painfully honest self-deprication, nimble attacks on pseudo-intellectualism and brilliant character studies. This is not a book for the politically correct or over-sensitive as it pulls no punches. Inviting equal parts laughter, tears and painfull introspection (there is far too much reader identification here), Magnuson captures a specific region (in this case the often frozen tundra of Wisconsin) and its inhabitants in a personal and captivating way.
A great find and well worth the time.
A highly entertaining view into the typical (?) male mind.......2004-04-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and didn't want to put it down until it was finished. The book consists of a series of memorable episodes from the author's young adult life in Wisconsin. The author describes with considerable humor and painful honesty the life of an "average" man... although his exceptional intelligence gives away the fact that his is not your typical 80's-era slacker. I certainly knew some midwestern guys who were similar in their younger days to the title character, and the author has definitely nailed his descriptions and characterizations of the time and places. Personally, I would have liked to see a little bit more evidence of the main character's heart, but then again, this is a book about a "Lummox". I would recommend this book to anyone, male or female, who is looking for an easy-going, laugh-out-loud book.
A modern classic - a thoughtful, manly book..........2004-02-17
Mike Magnuson's autobiography is an insightful read, not because Magnuson is some extraordinary figure, but because he is just like the rest of us; simply an ordinary guy trying to stumble his way through life, women and beer.
Lummox recounts Magnuson's various life lessons with an honest and forthcoming tone. Certainly funny, the book is also peppered with solemn moments as Magnuson takes his knocks and rolls with them.
It's defiantly a guy's book - in the same way that Chuck Palahniuk's books are... written with an unapologetic, realistic and sometimes sexist tone.
I highly recommend this book to any guys out there who are looking for realistic and intelligent male-centric literature.
Magnuson shows that books, like, kick-bum!!!.......2003-08-06
I just got done reading the paperback version of this book and it's a hoot. Highly recommended. In short, it's a hilarious (and often melancholy) autobiography about the author who's a classic underachiever, drifting through life by drinking, (trying) to get laid and playing the drums. When that doesn't work out, he goes back to college and gets an english lit. degree. In the end, Magnuson finally finds his place in the world through self-acceptance and love. It's also a very pointed critique of those (your basic "politically correct" types) who engage in the very same stereotyping (this time - of the male lummox) that the lummox is so often accused of doing. Like Jim Goad's "Redneck Manifesto," the moral of the story may well be that stereotyping is inaccurate, and therefore dangerous, whether it comes from the left or the right.
And if that doesn't pique your interest in reading this book, then read it because, to use Magnuson's words, it "kicks bum!"

Book Description
A young adult biography of one of the most influential figures in modern Judaism
Abraham Joshua Heschel - theologian, teacher, author, beloved rabbi, civil rights activist, and modern prophet of social conscience - was one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century.
Perhaps best known by most Americans for his headline-making participation in the 1965 Selma, Alabama march alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Heschel was also an extraordinary Jewish educator and the author of nearly two dozen books. He inspired millions of Jews and non-Jews alike throughout the world with his writings and his campaigns for social causes.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for kids.......2004-01-28
I've always loved Heschel's writings and all that I knew of his life, but never thought any of it could be expressed in a form that kids could get. Or Rose did it!
When I heard about this book, I was excited by the possibility of my daughters learning about Heschel. I read the book through. I think it will be perfect for middle school kids. It doesn't assume any background.
A wonderful gift for your friends' children aged 9-13.
Bringing a Hero to a New Generation.......2003-12-02
This is a beautiful book! Mr. Rose shares the incredible story of Abraham Joshua Heschel with grace and skill. This is an important addition to the small collection of literature for young readers on the lives of great religious and political figures in the United States.
