From the title alone, you know it's going to be good. Biddle delves into anthrax and arboviruses, cholera and chlamydia, diphtheria, dengue, and dysentery, and on through the disease-ridden alphabet to Zika fever. Biddle explains in graphic detail the causes, symptoms and treatments for these germs, and it's all jolly good middle-of-the-night reading. You might become somewhat phobic if you read it from cover to cover, but no one will be more scintillating at parties.

    Book Description

From the ravages of the Ebola virus in Zaire to outbreaks of pneumonic plague in India and drug-resistant TB in New York City, contagious diseases are fighting back against once-unconquerable modern medicine. Public concern about infectious disease is on the rise as newspapers trumpet the arrivals of new germs and the reemergence of old ones.

In A Field Guide to Germs, Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer Wayne Biddle brings readers face to face with nearly one hundred of the best-known (in terms of prevalence, power, historical importance, or even literary interest) of the myriad pathogens that live in and around the human population. Along with physical descriptions of the organisms and the afflictions they cause, the author provides folklore, philosophy, history, and such illustrations as nineteenth century drawings of plague-induced panic, microscopic photographs of HIV and Ebola, and wartime posters warning servicemen against syphilis and gonorrhea.

From cholera to chlamydia, TB to HIV, bubonic plague to Lyme disease, rabies to Congo-Crimean encephalitis, anthrax to Zika fever, and back to good old rhinitis (the common cold), A Field Guide to Germs is both a handy reference work to better understand today's headlines and a fascinating look at the astonishing impact of micro-organisms on social and political history.

    2 out of 5 stars some misinformatoin.......2007-09-20

I've read only a few of the germ chapters described in this text and chose to read no more after encountering some blatantly incorrect information. For instance, with Rabies, the author states humans can only contract the disease if bitten by a rabid animal. Not true. Infection can be transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal or another human by contacting saliva with an open wound or mucus membrane. The author also states that humans are a dead end for the virus because we can't infect others. Absolutely not true. Visit a hospital with a rabies patient and you'll likely get a very different opinion as to the danger of the virus spreading.

Overall, the information felt unverified and dashed off. Making this a primer for some I suppose but hardly a definitive much less accurate work.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty to worry about here.......2006-02-25

This is the revised and updated edition of 2002 of the book originally published in 1995. The book is a "field guide" only in a metaphorical sense. After all, most of the subject matter is invisible to the unaided eye.

There's an overview in the Introduction of the role germs have played in the life of humans. It's a gruesome story. There follow 161 pages focusing on the individual germs or germ genuses in alphabetic order beginning with adenoviruses and ending with Zika fever, a rarely encounter viral disease which Biddle includes, he writes, because "we need a Z." Unless I miss my count there are 74 entries.

There's more than a micron of whimsy in the text as Biddle, who is also the author of A Field Guide to the Invisible and other works, tries to lighten up the mostly depressing subject matter with witticisms, e.g., "Untreated colds last a week; medical attention can end them after seven days." (p. 129) Each entry is between half a page and a couple of pages in length except for a few of greater interest, like polio which runs to almost five pages and includes a black and white pic of a young Elvis Presley happily getting vaccinated. There are 54 illustrations accompanying the text, many of them of old time cartoons and posters calling attention to various plagues and epidemics. Especially noteworthy are some drawings warning young men about syphilis, gonorrhea and other venereal diseases, showing women as culprits, or as Biddle has it, "Always one of Shorty's girls, never Shorty."

The strength of the book is in how wide is Biddle's range of interest and in the fact that each pathogen is identified in some detail including its common and scientific names, whether it is a virus or a bacterium, a protozoan or something else (worms and prions, for example). How the disease is transmitted, its symptoms and its history are also noted. One can learn something about the nature of disease and how our immune system copes from reading the text, which is informal but not flippant.

A weakness is that he doesn't consistently explain how viruses, bacteria and other contagions actually work their horrors, although in some cases he does. Bacteria that produce deadly toxins, like anthrax are identified as causing injury "to cells and tissue." And he explains that the HIV enters and renders helpless our T-4 lymphocyte cells by getting their DNA to produce viruses. This is how viruses in general work: they enter our cells, take over the machinery, and after a bit burst out, a thousand or so strong, each virus now headed for another cell. It can be surmised how after a while a lot of our cells are out of commission and can no longer do their job. In the case of the common cold viruses, apparently they don't commandeer enough of our cells (I presume along the lining of the nose and throat) to really do us any harm. Most of the discomfort, again presumably, comes from the body's reaction to the invasion, the fever, the sneezing, the coughing, etc. But Biddle is short on this sort of explanation. But he is not the only one. I am still looking for that popular book on disease that explains in detail and specifically how each pathogen does its harm to our bodies. Are we eaten, cell by cell or are we poisoned, or are we doing okay until the pathogen reaches some vital organ where it does...what?

We are told, and Biddle in part confirms this, that recurring diseases like colds or the flu come round regularly when the weather is right to keep us indoors and sneezing on one another in closed quarters, thus effectively spreading their particles happily about. However, he only alludes to the possibility that we may be harboring many, many germs within our bodies that only become pathogenic when we are weakened or when their season, as it were, comes round. My point is that it may be the case that we can get the flu every year or so or a cold without ever coming into contact with anybody else. We may harbor the germs for life. In some cases they become subdued by our immune system, but then they may mutate so that our system doesn't immediately recognize them and they go wild.

A nice confusion that Biddle clears up is how sometimes we get a cold or the flu (viral infections) but end up with a bacterial infection to boot. Although he doesn't explain specifically how this happens, apparently the flu or cold weakens us in some way that allows bacteria a chance to do us harm, which is why some patients insist on getting an antibiotic prescription from their doctor even though they have a viral infection.

Biddle addresses the mutation issue, fueled by the overuse of antibiotics so that our bodies and those of our cattle and pigs become virtual laboratories for the development of mutant strains of microbes immune to very antibiotics we are using.

As a bonafide, card-carrying germaphobe, I can tell you that this book is definitely worthwhile, and will spur you to even greater efforts at avoidance. Beware if you tend to the obsessive, however, since after reading this you may never stop washing your hands, and may never again leave the house.

4 out of 5 stars Good for those in the field, and for the curious.......2004-01-19

Usually, I approach texts such as this with some trepidation, because they have a tendancy of being the author's perception as well as some half-baked theory of a conspiracy.
This book is objective, clear-cut, and explains in simple terminology, the story behind our most common "bugs" and the diseases they cause.
If you are intrigued by the field of diseases, I suggest you check this one out.
Also check out "Killer Germs" (Barry & David Zimmerman) for something more in depth and historical.

5 out of 5 stars Germs by Biddle.......2003-11-06

This is an excellent work which diarizes practically every
major germ imaginable. The author depicts how physicians
dressed in special garb to guard against the bubonic plague
throughout the centuries following the 1300s. The work describes
various acute respiratory diseases impacting the tonsils and
adenoids. Today, there is a lowered risk of Anthrax
infestation due to considerable advances in the medicinal arts.
Lyme disease is still a concern in the Northeastern, USA.
Approximately 15-30% of ticks are infected and 1-3% of
people bitten by ticks become infected with Lyme disease.
Cholera is a disease which manifests itself in a dirty
environment of water or food contamination. The hantavirus
is carried by mice and rats which contaminate the air by
breathing common air and spreading disease through droppings,
urine and saliva. This book could be very helpful in identifying
a complicated disease process early enough so that effective
strategies could be formulated and implemented.
This work would be beneficial to a wide constituency of readers
including medical personnel, parents, teachers, public
administrators, rangers and any public service employee.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Accurate and Readable Guide.......2003-01-07

I'm a professional microbiologist (and plague expert) and find this book to be succinct, accurate, and a pleasure to read. Sounds to me like the reviewer from Brooklyn might have a competing volume to sell. I've recommended this work and its previous edition for years to my students and colleagues. It's a rare example of science writing that is both informative and fun.

    Book Description

"Although most people are aware that bacteria are all around us, few would guess that they produce such distinctive and accessible signs. Whether you're walking on the beach, visiting a zoo or aquarium, buying groceries, looking for fossils, drinking beer, traipsing through a swamp, or cleaning scum from beneath a dripping outdoor faucet, you're surrounded by bacterial field marks. You don't need a laboratory or fancy equipment to find out what kind of bacteria are there—this guide will tell you how."—from the Introduction

Bacteria are an integral aspect of every habitat in which they occur and affect the lives of humans, other animals, and plants in many ways. Too often, we equate "bacterium" with "pathogen" and think of bacteria as things to avoid. In a fascinating guide perfect for naturalists, students, teachers, and tourists alike, Betsey Dexter Dyer lets the reader know that it is possible to observe bacteria with all the senses. Many groups of bacteria can be easily identified in the field (or in the refrigerator) without a microscope.

Written for curious souls of all ages, A Field Guide to Bacteria opens our eyes—and noses and ears—to this hidden (or neglected) world around us. Useful illustrations, including 120 color photographs, accompany Dyer's lively text throughout.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars At Last: A Guide to Charismatic Microflora!.......2004-02-23

Betsey Dexter Dyer has written a book in "A Field Guide to Bacteria" that, once it is opened, you wonder why no one has written before. The premise is so obvious that it seems to have been totally overlooked! Location, visual appearance, activity, smell and other characteristics that do not always require a high-powered microscope can be used to identify bacterial colonies! Fortunately the "wait" for such a book (which, until now, we probably did not even know we needed) has been worth it because Dyer has done an excellent job of writing it! In this book she introduces the reader to the teaming microflora of bacteria of earth in a way that cannot help but increase the number of people who appreciate these invisible true owners of the planet.

The huge bacterial flora is well covered and the author's grasp of the multitudinous habitats where bacteria live and thrive, sometimes under the most extreme conditions, is impressive. Everything from sulfur bacteria, halophytes and causes of desert varnish to internal symbionts and more are covered in fascinating detail. Dyer has opened up a whole new way of looking at the world that give us a more accurate view of the pervasiveness of the tiny. Not all bacteria are out to get us by any means and this book provides a much needed balance to the "killer bacteria" usually featured in popular literature.

A necessary book for amateur and even professional microbiologists, it will also, I think, provide a good read for anyone interested in the natural world as it really is.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent even for professional microbiologists.......2004-02-17

While this book is intended for the general public, and is certainly accessible to those without microbiological training, don't pass it up even if you have microbiological training -- in many ways it is a condensed version of Balows' _The Prokaryotes_, and likewise quite useful for reminding oneself what obscure groups of bacteria do "for a living".

Of course, Dyer's book is a lighter, more amusing read than Balows', and chock full of the sort of anecdote that is fun to slip into a lecture -- such as the explanation of Charles Dickens' cryptic reference to a "bad lobster in a dark cellar" in _The Christmas Carol_, and the fact that the oddly named cyanobacterium _Nostoc_ was named by the alchemist Paracelsus!

In addition, I was pleasantly surprised that despite identifying herself on the very first page as a former student of Lynn Margulis, Dyer doesn't try to defend her mentor's continued rejection of the discoveries of molecular phylogeny, but even goes so far as to praise Woese and Sogin by name! It is refreshing to finally see a work of popular science that acknowledges how the pioneers of molecular phylogeny have changed microbiology over the last couple decades.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant concept, great execution, fun book.......2003-06-13

This fun and informative book starts with the brilliant idea of identifying bacteria by their MACROscopic field marks (colors, smells, effects) rather than by microscope. You would never believe how many bacteria one can identify by "field marks" alone, and readers will be surprised at how much fun the identification and discussion of bacteria can be. The author's execution of the guide -- her excellent and enthusiastic writing style and her choices of which bacteria to discuss -- makes this the rare field guide that one can read from cover to cover. The book discusses everything from bacteria in hot springs to those that make cheese or pickles, to those in animal intestines. There are beautiful (yes, beautiful) color plates, great suggested experiments, and guides to finding different kinds of bacteria. The author makes the subject interesting, funny and captivating -- and she uses exclamation points without irony! All in all an excellent book -- don't be scared off by the title; any nature- or science-lover you know will thoroughly enjoy it.

I'm new to using a pressure cooker and have been looking for intersting recipies. I'm really disppointed in this book. It doesn't have any good basic recipies. Most of the recipies are not anything that I am interested in. Who cooks with red wine and figs, anyway???

4 out of 5 stars 'Express Cooking' = Excellent Results!!!.......2003-11-11

I love pressure cooking and I have six cookers: an electric, 2 stovetops, a pressure fryer, a microwave cooker and a 21-quart pressure canner. You can't beat the cooking time and the results are both delicious and nutritious.
Express Cooking addresses the cooking questions of people buying the new electric models (although only 4 and 6 quart models are considered)as well as those of us who still like our stovetop cookers. The authors discuss the different models and types, operating instructions and safety considerations. They do attempt to allay the fears of those who have heard those 'horror stories' about exploding pressure cookers. Modern models have several safety features that preclude those types of disasters. I would note however, that there is a popular recipe being circulated for cooking chicken a la KFC by bringing oil up to 400 degrees in the pressure cooker, placing chicken pieces in the oil and bringing the cooker up to pressure and cooking for several minutes. THIS SHOULD NEVER BE ATTEMPTED IN A PRESSURE COOKER!!! Specially designed pressure fryers can do this safely, but trying this in a home unit is very dangerous.
That warning aside, Express Cooking will help you to produce some delightful meals. I never considered cooking turkey in a pressure cooker until I read the recipe for Roast Turkey with Gravy. Now you can have a 5-6lb. turkey breast cooked in less than an hour with a gravy that will please everyone. Being a lover of poultry, I also count the recipes for Chicken Cacciatore and Chicken Paprikash as 'keepers'. Other sections include making delicious stock(s), meat, seafood, veggies(with a complete time guide for specific vegetables), Grains, Beans, Sauces and of course, desserts. There is a recipe here for Eggnog Cheesecake and that alone is worth the price of the book.
Also included is a listing of the major manufacturers and how to contact them. It can be very frustrating to purchase a pressure cooker and not be able to find a replacement gasket when the time arises.
Pressure cooking has undergone a renewed interest because it is quick and easy. It is also nutritious and safe! This book is a well-written reference and the food is great too!!

4 out of 5 stars Questions I need answered by the authors of this book.......2001-03-16

I just bought this book, Express Cooking,as I also bought Salton/Maxim/Farberware Electric Programable Pressure Cooker, and needed more recipes than the included booklet listed. In your book, you say, with a great many recipes, "Reduce the heat to stabilize the pressure and cook for --- min." Does this actually apply to my pressure cooker? Also, you say, "Remove the pressue cooker from the heat, ......". In order to do that, I would have to turn the cooker off. I have used manual older jiggle top cookers & can understand the instructions applying to that. Please do answer my e-mail. I cannot get your web-site to open. I like this book a lot, it is just sort of confusing when using it with my cooker. Thanks for your help.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its' name!.......2001-02-23

I bought this book last week and have tried two recipes so far. Okay not a lot, but enought to say it lives up to its' name. The Sante Fe Chicken soup was wonderful, I love chipote peppers, it gave this chicken soup a nice smokey taste. I also love tortilla soup, toasting sliced tortillas as a topping for the chicken soup reminded me fondly of my favorite tortilla soups. I made the Chicken and Rice today, again wonderful flavor -- from start to table in about 45 minutes. As I thoroughly enjoy my pressure cooker, I was looking for exactly what this book delivers -- healthy recipes, thoughtfully low in fat, easy to follow, delightfully seasoned, and fast. This one I'll keep close at hand.

Great book for people on the go, that are trying to cut back on fast-food full of fat. The new pressure cookers are safe and it's amazing how fast you can have a meal ready. This book is packed full of really good recipes our family loved. It makes cooking a pleasure...

A collection of thoughts, poems and essays on knitting with an occasional pattern thrown in. Fun and light reading for the most part, but beware -- there's more than one tear-jerker contained within!

5 out of 5 stars Keep some tissues handy.......2004-12-27

If you love knitting and reading about knitting, this is the book for you. It is comprised of many short (true) stories that involve knitting, many of which are tear jerkers. Keep your tissues handy.

I stayed up late reading this and finished it in one sitting. It would make a thoughtful gift for any knitter, newbie or advanced.
I plan on passing this book along to my mother-in-law for her to enjoy. It's too good to just sit on my shelf, I feel I have to share it.

1 out of 5 stars Don't feel sorry for her.......2006-12-20

I first bought the hardback in 1997 when it was released. I found it at B. Dalton in the mall by accident. It was released before the band released Walk this way. I gotta tell ya, she doesn't pull any of the heart strings for me. I never felt sorry for her, maybe pity. She made herself sound like a saint and totally innocent. The whole time, I thought she was entirely responsible for her actions. It's her own fault. And I'm not sorry she's dead. I just hope some of the profits she received went to Mia. It's interesting to me that she said that Steven never cared for his daughter when I have always had the impression that they have always been close. From all the stories she told, I only believed maybe one line out of the whole thing. If people were to read, or already have, Bebe Buell's book-Rebel Heart-you'll find out otherwise. When Cyrinda was married to David Johansen, she tried on all of Bebe's dresses, which were too small for Cyrinda. She ripped out the seams and returned them on the hangers. I thought she was extremely manipulative, cunning and deceitful. She knew what she was getting herself into when she got involved with Steven. She went after him! She told a friend of the band that she was going to take Steven for all he's got-flat out. I feel no sympathy for a liar who remained bitter and resentful until the end. They made up before she passed and Steven paid the majority of her medical bills and the funeral expenses. He's the saint, not her.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming On and On, Channelling?.......2006-07-28

Oh, I loved this book and suffered for her as I read it..It was
a well written profile and character development of an intelligent
and special woman who may not have fulfilled her potential except
in her support of her friends and in the writing of this book.
I felt the flavor of her childhood and eventual life in NewYorkCity
and elsewhere..I cared about her and for her...It made me think
and wonder what other autobiographies I could read... She was
not a groupie...but a wife and mother who happened to love
musicians and artists and had a gift for working with special
people...She was an artist in her own right who should be
recognized and admired for her flair and design and aesthetics
and love and light...I highly recommend this book...Next I plan
to read Nora, The real Molly Bloom.
By the way, she is an inspiration to my actress daughter for her
new role and I really found Cyrinda Foxe very likeable. Too bad
I did not get to be her friend....except through her book and
            her art on ovoworks/smug.mug..

            3 out of 5 stars Like a Soap Opera.......2005-10-19

This biography is about a fairly shallow women who refuses to take responsibility for herself, for what happened to her. She went after Steve Tyler with a vengence, knowing that he was a drug addict, a conceited maniac, knowing his past history with women (some not even old enough to truly qualify as "women" yet). And then she stayed with him even though he terrorized her? Doesn't make a lot of sense. She doesn't even mention her own drug addiction. She paints herself as an innocent who found herself helplessly victimized but she was too savvy, too experienced (she was of the Warhol crowd) going into the marriage to fit that role. Basically, I found myself thinking that this was a woman who wasted her time feeling sorry for herself instead of learning how to do something that would get her a job. Ok, being married to Steve Tyler couldn't have provided her with the safe haven she was looking for but a little more insight into herself, a little more honesty would have made this book a whole lot more credible.

5 out of 5 stars Honesty ,the last frontier.......2000-10-19

Extremely sensetive and acurate account of a real life experience , living as the wife of one of the most important rock stars in the world. Cyrinda Foxe emerged from a very trendy and creative Warhol crowd and with true intentions of deep love and happines, plunged into a marriage of HELL. Being from Europe, her explanation of the daily life of rock and roll was fascintating for me. I know that people would like to think that stars are perfect but we are all mortal and full of aberations. The most fascinating and touching point was how Cyrinda was able with out any help to extract herself and her daughter Mia from that living inferno. If you are an adult and want the truth beyond the hype and glory of corporate rock and roll, this is the book you have to read. Sorry for my English but I am not from your country.

2 out of 5 stars You have GOT to be kidding!.......2000-09-29

Im going to make this short & sweet. I found 99% of this book totally unbelievable. I mean, geeze, give Tyler a break, there is no way he could have been that messed up and still front the best rock band in the world. And that stuff about Tyler and Perry, I just dont buy it, nope.

            1 out of 5 stars A very bitter ex-wife.......2006-03-10

I bought this book out of curiosity (plus I'm a huge Aerosmith fan). It sucks. She totally trashes Steven in one sentence, but turns around and compliments him. Make up your mind! She constantly contradicted herself throughout the entire book. She said she's fiercely protective of Mia, which I don't believe. She continued to focus on how she needed money for things, such as diapers for Mia. Why wouldn't she just get a job?! I was constantly mad at her for things I think she made up. I have no sympathy for her and I am not sorry she's gone now. Hopefully the proceeds of this crappy book went to Mia. I've always wondered what she thought when she read all this stuff from her mother about her father. Cyrinda wrote about Steven being such a bad parent-what about her?! Writing all this made up stuff showing him in a bad light isn't exactly mother of the year! I read Steven say in an interview that he heard her book on tape. He also thought she was bitter. He said she should just get a job and move on with her life (which I could tell she was not able to do). All she could do was dwell on the past. Steven continued to help her out, though. He paid a lot of her medical bills and paid for all the funeral expenses. So screw her.

4 out of 5 stars Poor girl- so sad!.......2003-09-27

I felt so sorry for Cyrinda after I finished this book. She had such a hard time of it and now she is passed away so I am really glad I own her memoir. I hope she is at peace now and I hope that her memory will live on in the pages of this book. It is worth the read.

3 out of 5 stars Good but could've been written better.......2003-09-12

I don't see why some of the viewers gave this book 1 star and while it's a good book, I felt that it could've been written better and some parts of the book is interesting and I do have Aerosmith's Walk This Way and this was the book that got me interested in Cyrinda Foxe, the routine with Elissa and the airline stewardesses was funny, overall if you like Aerosmith: Walk This Way or Rebel Heart then you'll like Dream On: Livin' on the Edge with Steven Tyler.

1 out of 5 stars Read Rebel Heart Instead of This ..........2003-03-27

I love biographies about famous people but I'm sorry to report this has to be the worst one I have ever read. ... It was one of the only books I didn't even care to finish. Don't waste your money on this one - the stories are half told and the writing is contradictory and confusing throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Wild Child Who Walked on the Wild Side!.......2003-01-26

I read this book and I felt for cyrinda. Its amazing that I read this book (feeling compelled to write to her) and found out she had died the day before. To be honest, none of us know Steven Tyler and how he really is. We don't know if all she says in this book is even true. Still as soon as I recieved it in the mail, I read it all the way through. I could not put it down. I was dumbfounded by the kind of lifestyle this runaway girl lived.
She was brave but careless with her life. It's a sad sad story and I cried. I imagined living her life and it made my heart grow heavy. Maybe people don't agree with her book but its how she seen it. It's her personal life and she aired it and now shes gone. Get the book! Enjoy it! Its a roller coaster let me tell ya. But please keep and open mind because some things are really far out! But hey were talking about the ex wife of a toxic twin, what did ya expect!

I really enjoyed this book. Its about a girl named Hedi Fried. Her family was a normal family. But there was one problem. She was a Jew. One day her family was intruded at their house. Every person was ordered to stand outside for hours on their street. They were later taken to a ghetto where they were transported by train to a death camp called Auschwitz. They had to follow strict rules and watch people get taken from their families and put into gas chambers, getting shot and thrown into mass graves. They smelt the smoke and decay of the dead being burned. Hedi's parents were killed along with her many friends. Hedi and her sister Livi were the only ones who survived in her family. Later in life Hedi got married and had children. Livi died a couple of years later along with Hedi's husband.

              Book Description

The Road to Auschwitz is the autobiography of Hedi Fried, a fifteen-year-old living in Sighet, Romania, when war breaks out in 1939. In March 1944, Hedi’s family, along with three thousand other Jews from her village, are confined to a ghetto, awaiting shipment to Auschwitz. In Auschwitz, amidst the horror, Hedi turns twenty, her sister, Livi, fifteen. As Hedi and Livi will later learn, their parents do not survive.

In April 1945, the sisters are transported to Bergen-Belsen, two months before liberation. Upon liberation, Hedi renews her acquaintance with Michael, another survivor from Sighet. They move to Sweden, marry, and eventually have three sons. It is the loss of Michael, when Hedi is only forty, that prompts this memoir. “It took me forty years to realize that I am a witness and that it is my task to tell what I experienced.”

5 out of 5 stars The Road to Auschwitz, The road to the top!.......2002-12-11

A great book written by a Swedish psycologist(Hedi Fried) about her childhood experience in Sighet. She was in this city for a while until she was sent to Auschwitz. She was there with her sis Livi. This is a touching story for those who survived the Holocaust and even kids and grown-ups today. She reflects on how the camps worked and every where she went. They reach Sweden and Make the city of Stockholm there new home. She was separated from her sis for a while and then reunited. Hedi Fried was lost from her parents then finds out they were gased in the gas chamber. One of the greater stories I've ever read. She tells of the pain and inhumanity of the Nazis and their leader Adolf Hitler. This book leads into Schindler's List a little bit. Hedi Fried did a great job!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Road to Auschwitz.......2000-05-31

A touching account by Swedish psychologist Hedi Fried about her childhood experiences in the Transylvanian town of Sighet and later at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Especially moving is her relationship with her younger sister Livia whom she saves from near death a couple of times. Livia repays her sister by reviving her during the liberation of the camp. Although a gripping story about the nightmares of the Holocaust, Fried has the ability to look at the lighter, funnier sides of the hellish reality. Reaching Sweden, Hedi and Livi have recovered and made Stockholm their home. Fried is now a well-known personality in Sweden, famous for her work with traumatized people such as refugees and Holocaust survivors and their second-generation children. A documentary film "Little Big Sister" was produced following the book with the narration of Swedish actress Bibi Andersson.
