Book Description
Vice Adm. John T. "Chick" Hayward's long and colorful career spanned the decades from naval aviation's infancy to the dawn of the jet age. He was one of those rare people who was eminently successful yet humanly colorful, a high school dropout who became a nuclear physicist. The story of his role in the development of the atomic bomb and his interaction with the other Los Alamos scientists is justification enough for a biography, but Hayward's contributions to the twentieth-century U.S. Navy go significantly beyond that period. Hayward saw combat in World War II and participated in the Korean War and Cuban missile crisis, and helped make many of the decisions that shaped the present-day navy.
From his service as an enlisted man to his rise to a flag officer, Hayward experienced life as a "powder monkey" on a battleship, a president of the Naval War College, a founder of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, a key player in getting nuclear weapons to sea, and an early developer of cruise missiles. An avid supporter of naval aviation, he amassed more pilot hours than any other flag officer and was one of the navy's first jet-qualified pilots. Hayward's longtime friend C.W. Borklund developed this autobiography from the admiral's 300-page diary. It captures the spirit as well as the facts of Hayward's history-making career, focusing on his involvement in events that had a major impact on politics, military policies, and plans. Highly personalized and sometimes opinionated, the memoir provides a great deal of insight and food for thought about today's navy.

Written as an easily accessible plan based on his Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, Deepak Chopra's Grow Younger, Live Longer presents many of the same quantum-based theories of aging as simply a matter of changing your perception. But here, you'll find the format greatly simplified into 10 short chapters, each with a single focus. Each step is fairly basic and combines visualization and breathing exercises with the behavior modifications we've come to expect when we try to get healthier, such as more exercise, balanced eating, avoidance of toxins, and regular sleep. Clear diagrams are included as necessary, such as with his yoga stretches and breathing exercises, and tables have been provided for a quick glance at some recommendations for vitamins. A handful of internationally inspired vegetarian recipes is tucked in the back and are a fun way to introduce some unusual flavors to your meals.
A regular complaint about Chopra's books is the lack of clear data to back up his claims, and this has not changed. He provides numerous anecdotal accounts of folks ridding themselves of cancer, AIDS, or high blood pressure. For many lay readers, these anecdotes provide enough encouragement to try Chopra's program and improve their outlook on life; medical professionals may just be annoyed. Lack of research aside, it's hard to argue with the suggestions. From "connecting more openly with your coworkers" to "always use sunscreen when you are outdoors" and "drink plenty of fresh water throughout the day," the majority of Chopra's methods seem based in common sense, with his "Quantum Realm" as the seasoning that adds a little exciting flavor to a very basic recipe. --Jill Lightner

Useful Advice For Quality of Life and Perhaps A Longer Life.......2004-11-28
I took the audio program of this book out from my library due to sheer curiosity and since then have bought the book in print because I though it would be easier to use it as a reference that way.
I have many of Dr. Chopra's audio tapes and while I don't take everything he says at face value I try to stay open to what he says on any given program and judge the material for it's own merits.
Of course Dr. Chopra's popularity as a "Pop Culture Guru" can make it tempting to take him less seriously and write off anything he does as just another way for him to make a buck. Sometimes I myself feel this way due to the "factory-like" volume of materials that have come out under his authorship. Also, I do find that Deepak can get somewhat repetitive in much of his talk about "Cybernetic Feedback Loops" and the like :)
Still, I always feel that if there's even one idea that can be helpful it is worth the effort and I generally get some benefit out of Deepak's work which is what led me to check this out.
What I found on this particular program was a lot of good advice for living a healthier and less stressful life. While I'm not a scientist, it seems quite obvious that anyone with a brain and common sense would realize that if you actually follow the advice given on this program you could only realize tremendous benefits on many levels.
Perhaps the only thing that might be considered "hocus pocus" by the mainstream medical community is Dr. Chopra's use of affirmations. While I'm generally not personally drawn to use affirmations , I would have to at least admit that if an affirmation helps one to focus on something positive rather than something negative it certainly can't hurt.
As far as the claims of a program like this making you live longer, who knows, BUT it seems quite clear to me that if you follow this program you will in the least feel better during whatever time you do have. Not only that, it seems pretty logical that if you do follow the useful advice on this program and therefore improve your overall physical and mental well being that it should translate into having a longer life than if you didn't follow the advice, and there is a LOT of practical and sound advice here.
I would be wary of some of the obviously jaded and arrogant scientific criticism that I read in previous reviews listed here concerning this book. My experience with the book is that those criticisms didn't ring true. While I can understand their concerns that this book may make some bold claims which they don't feel are scientifically proven, in general it appears that scientists seem to have a very narrow window that they look through and if it doesn't fit their world view then they think it's false.
The danger is that they think their world view is one based on facts, but perhaps they fail to realize or admit that they are limited by their current level of understanding, methods and equipment.
It wasn't so long ago that Newton was THE voice of physics and Quantum physics didn't exist as a scientific discipline. It wasn't so long ago that Galileo was given quite a hard time for views that are obvious to us now. There are other world views out there, that are equally valid. There are also many other approaches to well being that have been working for thousands of years, long before there was the American Medical Association and the like.
Likewise it also always amazes me how many doctors like to write off certain healing anomalies as a "placebo effect". What they fail to admit is that the whole notion of a "placebo effect" in and of itself is quite miraculous and shows that there are possibilities beyond what many Western doctors and scientists would like to admit is possible. Just because they can't quantify it doesn't make it invalid.
All that being said :)
Aside from the "Affirmations", this book is actually very grounded and filled with excellent and practical advice and one doesn't need to have a Ph.D. in aging to realize it's benefits. Anyone who "has a body" and common sense can benefit by good nutrition, exercise and stress reduction and therefore can benefit by the information in this program.
This book IS by the way co-authored by two doctors, one of which is Dr. David Simon. Dr. Simon was trained in neurology but came to feel the limitations of Western medicine as a sole healing modality. His search has led him to an integrative approach utilizing the best of so called "Conventional" and "Alternative" disciplines.
I am currently reading two of his books "Vital Energy" and "Wisdom of Healing" which are excellent. I was first exposed to Dr. Simon through a 12 tape audio program he did with Deepak Chopra called "Training the mind, Healing the Body" which is fascinating and very helpful. I was deeply impressed with Dr. Simon's deep knowledge, obvious sincerity, and compassion. After encountering that program I started searching out more of his materials which have all been outstanding!
Transformational.......2004-11-09
The message within the pages of Grow Younger, Live Longer is nothing short of transformational! Practical, easy to follow, result oriented ways to live a long, healthy life. Chapters cover a wide variety of topics including, sleep/daily routine, diet, exercise, creativity, flexibility, and mind/body/spirit balance to name a few. There is also a selection of delicious, nutritious recipes that leave the reader wanting more.
A personal story: I had the pleasure of meeting (and having my picture taken with) Dr. Deepak Chopra at a presentation he delivered as part of the promotional tour for this book. After hearing the lecture and reading the book, I finally found the courage and inspiration to finish my own book. Give Dr. Chopra a chance to show you how to Grow Younger, Live Longer.... you won't be disappointed!

A true gem!.......2004-05-16
This book is a true gem! It's recommended reading for everybody who is interested in feeling better, healthier and looking younger. The book offers a 10-step program to achieving this, and is written in a nicely, loving and easy to understand way.
The negative reviews here on amazon are coming from people who never devoted any time to practicing the exercises in this book. Anyone who has spend some time doing the exercises can account for the splendid results they produce!
So if you are looking for a well written and practical guide to health, youth and joy, read this book.
And for those of you who want a good laugh, go to Master Hoax Elixxer's (the guy who is writing his own positive reviews on amazon because no sane person will) website. It's amazing how much BS can fit in one website...

One of the first and one of the very best........2007-01-22
I purchased this book in the 70s, I think. I have since searched for and bought other copies to mail to my relatives. It contains the pure and simple recipes that we all should have. What a wonderful history of cooking. Now there are hundreds of books on Sicilian cooking. Its still right up there. If you are a serious Sicilian cook, you need to have it in your library.
A Classic.......2002-01-18
This is a unpretentuous book, not glamorous or fit for the coffee table, but it contains wonderful recipes and information. This was a significant book long before Sicilian cooking was 'discovered' by the the Martha Stewart cult....
JUST LIKE MY SICILIAN GRANDMA MADE.......2001-11-16
This book is excellent if you are looking for recipes that your Sicilian Grandmother or mother made at home....recipes are easy to read and follow. Especially enjoyed the little stories just before some of the recipes explaining the history of that particular dish.

The Joy of Cooking Nostalgia.......2001-01-03
This book is the one of the best Italian cook books I have seen. The recipies are authentic, simple to follow, and produce meals that I remember while growing up with a Sicilian mother.
This book, compared to "In Nonna's Kitchen", goes into a greater range of recipies, but it does not provide the historical perspective or origins of the recipie.
For a source of a wide variety of real Sicilian recipies it can't be beat.

Customer Reviews:
Hip? Maybe not hip . . ........2007-01-08
While 'Hip' is in the title, I am not so sure it is in the patterns. This book offers a nice variety of patterns for women, men, teens and children, with, I feel, the cutest patterns being for the kids. It is mostly sweaters with some hats, mittens, scarves, purses and throws in both knit and crochet, though mostly knit. The patterns all seem fairly simple with straight-forward instructions. Most of the sweaters have a very boxy shape, which to me does not equal hip. I think this book would be good for a beginning knitter ready to move on to something with more pieces and shaping than a scarf, but keep in mind that the authors assume you understand how to knit and don't have much of an instructional section.
Not ashamed to say it: I like it!.......2006-09-12
Yes, some of the patterns in here are a little, um, NOT-hip. But I've seen my fill of knitting books with patterns for skull wrist bands, crocheted bikinis, finger puppets, water-bottle cozies, etc.
I like the simple patterns. Especially the baby/kids patterns. In fact, I've used one pattern in this book for a baby sweater like 6 times. Everyone loves them! And yes, some of the adult sweaters are boxy, but there are several that are not.
My main complaint about this book is the way it's laid out. I don't like how one thing runs into another. I find that a little distracting when I'm trying to follow a pattern. But otherwise, I think this is a good book, especially for an advanced beginner, and defintely worth the money. I'm an intermediate knitter, and I still find value in the book.
Nothing Hip Here.......2006-09-08
Every time I go into the craft store with my 40 percent off coupon and see this book, I pick it up and leaf through it. But even at 40 percent off, there aren't enough interesting patterns in here to make it worth the cost.
The patterns definitely aren't hip, unless perhaps you were born before the invention of aluminum needles and are unfamiliar with the Internet.
Save your money -- you can do much better.
Not For A Beginner.......2006-09-02
If you are new to knitting, I do not recommend picking up this book. Hip Knits features 65 easy projects from hot designers. With gorgeous color photos and easy step instructions, you'll find fun and trendy patterns for projects for the whole family ... babies, kids, men and women. From terrific tanks to cozy cardigans, shawls and great guy gear, vests, hats, caps, mittens, and so much more. This terrific book is geared toward the intermediate knitter. A great gift idea!
If you're a new knitter, look for a book called Stitch & Bitch.. it's much better and has great patterns for all levels.
I donated mine to the local library.......2006-06-26
I am wayyy beyond the simple designs and I agree that there were a lot of ugly designs in the book. But maybe someone who checks it out of the library will appreciate it.

Bob Marley, reggae superstar and pop culture icon, left an indelible mark on modern music. Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley delves deep into the life of the lionized leader of a musical, spiritual, and political explosion that still reverberates more than a decade after his death. Almost nothing pertaining to the life of Bob Marley is left out; the origins of Rastafarianism (the Ethiopian religion that was the keystone of his life), the roots of the reggae sound, the Jamaican political and social debacle that informed his lyrics--this is a comprehensive account of the life of the artist and the times that produced him.
Catch a Fire is assiduously researched; the details writer Timothy White presents of the King of Reggae's life are cinematic in scope and, at times, cumbersome. White includes much of his primary source material, ranging from full interviews with band members to unearthed CIA documents, and devotes a whole section to describing his exhaustive research process. The final product is rich with elements of spiritual tome, rock biography, and history text; it is a hagiographic epic--the story of a man and his legend. --Brendan J. LaSalle
Book Description
The classic biography of reggae legend Bob Marley, updated and revised for the twenty-fifth anniversary of his deathBob Marley left an indelible mark on modern music, both as a reggae pioneer and as an enduring cultural icon. Catch a Fire, now a classic of rock biography, delves into the life of the leader of a musical, spiritual, and political explosion that continues today.Under the supervision of the author's widow and with the collaboration of a Marley expert, this fourth edition contains a wealth of new material, including many revisions made by the author before his untimely death. An appendix to the new edition chronicles Marley's legacy in recent years, as well as the ongoing controversy over the possibility that Marley's remains might be exhumed from Nine Mile, Jamaica, and reburied in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where hundreds of Rastafarians live. The new edition also contains an expanded discography and is factually updated throughout. "Probably the finest biography ever written about a popular musician." San Francisco Chronicle"As close as rock journalism comes to transcendent literature."Playboy"White has a deep appreciation for reggae's immediacy, hypnotic power, and contradictions . . . An exhaustively researched labor of love." Chicago Sun-Times
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing - what about the music?.......2007-08-31
I was very disappointed with this book. After reading it, I have a pretty good idea of what Marley's childhood was like, a hazy picture of his adult life but no understanding at all of how a poor man from a third-world country was able to popularize a genre of music that was almost universally disdained, or considered a novelty, in the world outside of Jamaica in 1973.
I would have expected more discussion of his music; specifically how he and Chris Blackwell adjusted the arrangement of Marley's reggae songs to appeal to a broader audience, as well as how Marley's music evolved over time. I know from watching VH1's "Classic Albums", that process was critical to Marley's success but I don't even get an inkling of that in this book.
Instead the book has way too much on Marley's childhood (140 pages into it, we have only followed Marley up to the age of 14!). This book also has too many vague, cryptic references to conspiracy theories about the CIA, Ronald Reagan, the Jamaican government, etc.
On the bright side, the book does a good job of describing the superstititious world of poor Jamaica, full of demons and ghosts, etc., which helps explain the popularity of Rastafarianism.
Good book - lot of detail..........2007-07-25
Okay, I read all of the book and learned a lot more about Bob than had preciously known, but I was disappointed by the lack of details on the making of the music. I was hoping for more details about the inspiration for a lot of Bob's music and this book did not have it.
I am currently reading "Exodous the Making & Meaning of Bob Marley & The Wailer's Album of the Century." This book goes into a lot more detail if you want to learn more about the music. I would recommend it over this book.
Still "Catch a Fire" is a good read if you want all the details of Bob's life.
The Dream Of Lasting Peace, World Citizenship.......2006-12-30
The book title is also the name of the 1973 debut album on Island records for Bob Marley and The Wailers that brought the lyrics and sounds of reggae to an international audience.
Originally published two years after Marley's death from cancer, the biography remains a great read due to the exhaustive research by author Timothy White.
White had interviewed Marley from 1975-1981 and projects the development & growth musically, spirtually and politically in his life. White also interviewed musicians, friends, family members, music industry executives and poltical leaders, along with the typical research - newspaper articles and other media outlets - and not-so-typical - CIA documents concerning Marley.
There are also sections on Jamaican history & politics, the history of reggae & Rastafarianism and how White did his research.
Marley projected a militant spiritualism in his music that will remain timeless. Catch a Fire gives the reader an understanding and appreciation on why Marley's message means as much today as it did so many years ago.
A Biography of more than just a Singer.......2006-10-25
For those of you who have heard Reggae and like the music you should like this book. Undoubtly Bob Marley is the greatest Raggae artist who ever lived, so it is not unusual that people are going to want to know more of his life. The book seems to be fair and objective. Sometimes it seems the writter is a little to sterile in his discription of Jamaican life. Having been to Jamaica I realize how unique Jamaican culture is. It was interesting to read of Bob Marleys mystic background. For a hardcore fan this might not be enough, but for somebody just wanting to know a little more you'll enjoy it.
Bob Marley Lives.......2006-05-06
"Catch a Fire" is an excellent book on the life of Bob Marley. The author did a good job of exploring the life of this truly great man. I had always thought that I knew about Bob Marley but reading this book revealed a lot of new insights into his music, his message and his rise to stardom and greatness. In particular, I got a better and deeper understanding of the background and history of Rastafarian movement as well as life in Jamaica.
This is the best book so far written about Bob Marley. It provides a comprehensive coverage of this remarkable man and includes other great people like Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer as well as Bob Marley's family, particularly his kids.
If you love Reggae music and/or you are a Bob Marley fan, then this book is for you.

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly inspiring!.......2006-03-14
If I could own only two books, one would be my Bible and the other Ed Spielman's remarkable biography of Joe Greenstein, a.k.a. The Mighty Atom.
Here was a man who exalted in life, exuded life and understood life far, far better than most.
Do you have problems in life? Who doesn't? After you read this book you will be able to take to heart the words of the Atom's protege, Slim Farman: "I never had to prove to him that I was somebody. He told me I was."
And the words of Joe Greenstein himself: "There is no such thing as a little man, and nothing is impossible."
Whatever it takes, GET A COPY OF THIS BOOK!
Essential, Excellent and Inspirational.......2005-09-07
Ever heard of man bite through tempered iron with his teeth...or hang from an airplane by his hair? Just because you may not have heard of Joseph "Mighty Atom" Greenstein or his accomplishments it does not mean you should ignore this book, quite the opposite in fact. I got this book as a young child in the 1980's and have read it many times. A riveting and inspirational read. Anyone interested in sports, martial arts, nutrition, spirituality or just looking for a self help guide would be wise to read this. A fascinating life with lessons for all of us...not just philosophical but practical too. Joseph Greenstein was not only the strongest man in the world, he was a giant of a character...raising a large family and much money for charity, providing health lectures and products for thousands of poor Americans. If I had just ten books on a desert island this would be one of them.
A Tall Man, The Strongest in the World..........2005-09-03
In his prime, Joseph Greenstein was the world's "strongest man" physically and billed as 'The Modern Hercules,' 'The Young Sandow," and 'The Ancient Samson' all in one -- The Mighty Atom, though he never did fly out of a canon. He rose from the ghettos of Poland, in Eastern Europe, to become the most famous of the weightlifter-strongmen ever.
He was a slim 5'4" body builder, weighing in at 145 pounds; the photo shows him as a young man showing off his becepts. In vaudeville at the Apollo Theatre he was billed as Joseph Green. He looked like a freak in bushy hair and Tarzan outfits complete with matching headband and funny looling shoes which strapped up his leg to the knee. That must have been the style in 1909. In his act, he straightened out hourshoes, crushed spikes in his hands, even had strong teeth -- bit through iron bars.
He used Asian techniques of concentration, Jewish mystical writings, and a natural begetarian diet. Who said it akes eating meat to make one strong? He later developed a more balanced body physique. Joseph appeared on Coney Island, the playground of the world, as shown in the movie, 'Inside Daisy Clover.' At Madison Square Garden he put on a martial arts show.
We all have an inner strength with the potential of a brick-wall. It doesn't take meditation to surpass hurdles, but a strong-as-iron determination to prove you're right. When I started out in PTA as a young mother, 5'l", 97 lbs., as a local unit president, I was given the honor and silver platter from the female school principal who called me a "brick-wall." Unlike those who preceded me, I did not acquiese to her rein over fund-raising profits. We paid for necessary items such as a paved area and playgfround at the school but would not finance building repairs -- that was the responsibility of the school board. I learned my speaking ability by appearing before them (and getting my way through friendly persuasion) on occasion, and conducting the PTA Meetings. As Regional Director, I visited and informed units throughout thirteen counties, which included the famous Tullahoma, Tennessee -- near Lynchburg.
Joseph was such a sensation that articles about him appeared in 'The Sun,' 'New York Journal,' 'New York American,' 'New York Telegram,' and 'New York Post,' as well as 'Buffalo Evening Times.' He proved that sometimes little is big and here's great strength in small packages.
Finally acknowledging his Jewish heritage, in 1978, he appeared with his protege, Slim Farman (who towered over him), in a black tunic with a Star of David over the chest. He was an old man, age 85, with white hair, beard, and mustache. He had achieved "the impossible."
An amazing book.......2005-06-02
I simply can't say enough good things about this incredible story. If you love weight-training and strength sports, if you want a snapshot of a nearly forgotten part of early 20th Century American life, if you wish to be inspired, read this. You will not be disappointed.
A truly amazing story.......2005-06-01
My good friend, knifemaker and martial artist, Ernest Emerson reccomended this book to me. All I can say is, "WOW!"
This is one of those books that will change your life and the way you lok at things. A blend of the old world and the new.
As one reviewer said, this would make an excellent movie. It's the story of a virtuous man and his relationship with his family and God and the amazing things he could do in spite of his small stature.
Unfortunately the book is out of print and the high prices reflect that. It is still worth it nonetheless! Grab a copy if you can find it!
