Perhaps I need to be more serious, but if you are serious about taking bipolar disoder seriously then this is a good book to get you started.

My Life.......2006-03-02

I was diagnosed as Bipolar back when the disorder was called plain old Manic-Depression. I had known something was wrong for about three years, but the lows weren't all that bad, and with a loving wife and four wonderful children, working fifty hours a week, and attending college full time, the non-stop stretches of 22 hour days were certainly very helpful. When I got to the point of being suicidal, at the pleading of some dear friends I finally sought help and I was put on Lithium. My shrink suggested I read Moodswing, and as I read it is was like reading "this is your life." The author is brilliant.

This book is not an academic tome, the author does not get overly technical, and is easy to read and understand. If a statistic is off in some spot or the editing isn't perfect, that's life and it does not detract from the great value of this book. My point is simple - this is an excellent book for someone with bipolar disorder, or for someone with a loved one or family member who is bipolar, that is if they cares enough to try to understand.

While staying off of the bandwagon, I am writing this review to point out something specific. I took Lithium for eleven years, and found it to be very effective. The book details how Dr. Fieve went to great extremes to find someone to market Lithium, for which I am thankful. Why was there a problem getting it to market, since it is helpful in approximately 70% of the people who use it? Lithium is a mineral salt, and as such even though there were clinical trials before it was approved by the FDA, Dr. Fieve found it difficult finding a company to market it, since it is rather difficult getting a patent on a naturally occurring mineral salt. I am not what some would consider a "health nut," and I don't believe "they" are out to get us, whoever "they" may be. Also, I do not reject conventional western medicine, and this is not a slam against the FDA or the pharmaceutical companies, just an acknowledgement that there are naturally occurring substances in nature that can help with medical conditions, and that without the protection of a patent there lacks a degree of willingness to market a helpful product when protection and a large profit margin are lacking. I know first hand that there are other naturally occurring nutrients that can help with Depression or Manic-Depression, but that's another story.

Bottom line - this is a wonderful and helpful book. Enjoy life!

A classic - worth owning.......2002-04-15

This is a nice little book on bipolar illness that won't choke you to death with scientific terminology or bore you silly. It's cheap and it won't take you months to read. Make it part of your library! Dr. Fieve opened the door for many people to take control of their lives and their healing. There are newer and more technical books available, but this one it very good.

Understanding Bi-Polar Illness Begins with Reading Moodswing.......2000-05-08

When my mother's psychiatrist said, "Your mother is bipolar," I remember being dumbfounded and confused. Although I was vaguely familiar with the terms manic-depressive and bipolar (same disease) I didn't have any real understanding of the illness. The psychiatrist recommended that I read Moodswing, by Dr. Ronald Fieve. Immediately I bought a copy of the book - my hunger for the truth caused me to devour the book like a starving child - it was so well written and had such helpful information I consumed each page as if my life depended on it. To my amazement, I recognized my mother in almost every chapter, sometimes feeling as if Dr. Fieve was actually writing about her! Reading Moodswing gave me comfort and hope because my mother's erratic behavior suddenly had a name and a treatment. After reading Moodswing I understood, for the first time, why Mom behaves the way she does and what causes the "different" behavior. If you or someone you love is bipolar, you must read this book. It could save a life - it will most definitely change yours for the better.

I THINK THAT THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON MOOD DISORDERS........2000-03-30

It was published in 1997 so it isn't the most recent of books however it is a good resourse. I didn't find it to "techy" to read. Also it is so important to understand your illness that if you run across concepts or words that you aren't familier with it is really important to familierize yourself with them for your own knowledge. Knowledge is power in managing your own health (and your own healthcare)

Limpy takes the guess work out of sausage making. This book should be in every kitchen. From simple to complex, Limpy covers it all. I've tried some of the other sausage books out there. I've yet to find anything as good as this. Limpy brings you into the 21st century with his techniques. Some books are so out-dated you could make people sick. Limpy hides no fact or detail. You can trust him to show you how it's supposed to be done. I've been cutting wild game for over 15 years. I've come to rely on Limpy's book to guide a successful wild game processing business / sausage making business. Thanks for the wonderful book Limpy. Also, thanks for all you gave in Vietnam to make sure the rest of us could live free! Great book!

I found this book to be very helpful in the art of sausage making, the book had some very good hints and simple recipes that taste great. I found Limpy also encourages you to alter his recipes to your own taste (I use half the salt and sugar). I can't wait to try his hot dog recipe which looks great and will allow my children to eat healthy hot dogs because I know exactly what is in them. I was originally looking for a duck sausage recipe which was not in the book however, his helpful hints and other recipes allowed me to create my own excellent duck sausage recipe.(imagine a healthy sausage that is low in sodium and fat and taste great).

As a first-time purchaser of a dwarf rabbit, I found this book to be very helpful. The author explains the varying characteristics of the breeds and even reviews the history of each breeding line. The beautiful photographs realy helped me to better visualize the different breeds, assisting in my purchase decision. The author also reviews the medical, feeding and housing needs of dwarf rabbits. This book is of great value to all first-time dwarf rabbit owners.

Run of the mill guinea pig book--it's more of a picture book than an INFORMATION book. It is more appropriate for pre-teens than for all ages, as it is billed as. The text is downright murky at times --if your guinea pig is ill or you don't know what Piggy's behavior means, you won't find that information here. However, the sections on food are very good--what to feed and what NOT to feed--and save the book from being a total loss. Also, the author has some negative personal opinions about Peruvians and Agouti guinea pigs that will DEFINATELY offend those of you who own/breed these WONDERFUL breeds of guinea pigs. (Can you tell I have a definate opinion here?)It's odd to note that on one page she will condem the breeding of Peruvians (because the long hair obscures eyesight and mobility) and yet on another page recommend selling guinea pigs as LAB ANIMALS. Huh? Continuity between the photograph captions and what the text is talking about is also a problem...sometimes you think the captions are for a different book. BUT if you have a kid thinking about getting a guinea pig, the basics are pretty much covered, the section on feeding is very good and the photos can be killer cute...that's all it takes, sometimes

Old School Metalwork.......2007-09-13

Found this book gathering dust on a local library shelf. There are a lot of books out there on new processes and procedures in reference to Metalworking. This is one of the older texts that is well worth reading because it revives some of the past processes that have recently been forgotten. Example, how to etch aluminum - not many new books even give aluminum any coverage. And there are projects for pewter. Remember pewter? Easy to work with and shines like chrome? No modern jewelry books even mention pewter in their index. Anyway, this book is worth at least what you pay for it.

It has become somewhat of a mild shock to me how many people do not understand that Dover is in the reprinting biz. This is a old school style middle/high school sheet metal or general metal text book type. It covers a basic overview of the tools and the steps to use them. Other than updating some of the tools for soldering ect. It is pretty much the same as you will get out of the latest glossy high tech photo book on the same subject. The only difference being that the projects are retro which is hot now so that style is in. The projects are the same type we had in school in the 60's and 70's Most of the hand tools, hammers, stakes and punches and pitch bowls haven't changed. I myself have and still use stakes and hammers that are seventy and eighty years old. I own it.

Copyright 1972...should be 1772. The illustrations are Old World sketches at best. If you want a VERY brief overview of tools and processes, this book should do. Although for being a basic and introductory book, it assumes you know some terms which can be frustrating. Probably a good guide if you're taking a course and want to refer to very basic tools and processes. Presentation is definitely "old school".

Good Coverage of Metalworking Basics.......2004-06-13

If one reads the Editorial Reviews you will see what is contained in this great little book. I was going to make a full list of what is include but they have given a good but brief summary so I will just add to it slightly.
The book is divided into three main sections. The first is Tools and Metalworking Processes. This section is 52 pages long and has what I believe to be excellent drawings of the tools required and gives drawings of the processes like Hollowing, Raising, Chasing and Etching to name a few. Section 2, at 110 pages, is called Projects with Processes and here Kronquist outlines a series of items to be made giving simple yet clear explanations of the relevant steps taken. In this section he makes a 1 Quart Pitcher, a Mail Box, a Fluted 9" Bowl, a Beaker, Serving Tray and an assortment of other items. The third section is devoted to the projects. In this section he gives us a series of drawing with dimensions for small items. They are mainly composed of items of Tableware, Cigarette holders, Coasters, Tea Strainers and Jewellery Boxes to name some. He then includes a small secion of 4 pages with finishes that can be applied to the various metals used. There is a couple of finishes each for Aluminium, Brass, Copper, Pewter and Silver. The book is then completed with a Glossary.
This book is aimed, I believe, at people who are interested in crafting as a hobby or the person who is wanting to get into this as a hobby. I do not believe it was aimed at practitioners of metalwork who are already true Craftsmen so do not be confused by the title. As such I think this is an excellent book for a person starting out for it gives you some simple projects that include dimensions and if you follow the instrucions you will build up a set of skills to tackle the projects of your own imagination. There are the big brothers to this book on the market and I have reviewed some but there is nothing wrong with this book and it should certainly be considered.
I therefore recommend it to others and I'm very pleased it is in my collection of books on working metal.

It's All Downhill From Here.......2006-08-04

I bought this for my son(17 years old). He is an Andrew Schwab fan, and he requested it for his birthday. He sat down and read the book so quickly. He was laughing and sighing at the same time.

The book is filled with a humorous but realistic look at the life of a band on the road.

My teenager HIGHLY recommends this for everyone!

Project 86: Behind the Music.......2005-02-01

Since Project 86 will probably never enjoy mainstream success, this is the closest any fan will ever come to anything resembling a VH1 Behind the Music special on Project 86.

From satirical (and often amusing) commentary, to hilarious tour stories, to heart-breaking situations, lead singer Andrew Schwab must be admired for his honesty, bluntness, and sincerity.

Uncovering his humanity for all to see, Schwab bears it all...even when it makes him look like less than the perfect Christian. Even while reading the book, I found my attitude toward Schwab wavering from excitement to disappointment to compassion. (Causing a reader to go through such an experience is an ability that only a talented writer possesses.) But in the end, I always came back to the realization that we all have growing to do in regards to our character and our relationships with the LORD.

I would recommend this book to anybody who is an avid fan of Project 86. My only major criticism of the book is that it wasn't edited very carefully...there is a plethora of omitted words that occasionally limits smooth reading.

CONSIDER THIS FAIR WARNING: If you have P86 (and especially Schwab) on a pedestal, you may be slightly shocked by what you read.

It's All Downhill From Here= Great.......2005-02-01

I found this to honestly be one of the best books that I have ever read. This is a must-have for any Project 86 fafn, or even any Tooth and Nail Record supporter. Andrew shares some of his deepest feelings as well as some of his most inspiring and touching stories he has to offer. You will find yourself unable to put the book down and find yourself wanting to share with Andrew how you feel for him and how much you appriciate what he does. Being a Project 86 fan, reading this made me love the band even that much more. You will most definitely not be disappointed with this one.

Rabbi Max Heller.......2000-12-10

Malone writes a biography of the well-known New Orleans reform Rabbi Max Heller of Temple Sinai, beginning with his life in Prague and ending with his death in 1929. Malone examines Heller's family, education, career, travels and ties to the communities in which he lived. Alongside the biography of Heller is a story of the American Jewish community during his lifetime, touching upon such topics as would befit a Rabbi of a major synagogue in America: the Reform movement, Zionism, the New Orleans Jewish community, and immigration. Also, the growth of racial beliefs that affected the Jewish community's identity with and acceptance in a Southern community which was defined upon racial and caste grounds is also much discussed. Malone does an excellent job of giving the reader an "actual feel" for the person Max Heller. Between sharp letters to and from his wife while Heller was in Europe to pictures of him working the land in Palestine, Malone carefully outlines Max Heller the activist, the family man, the community leader, the Rabbi, and the Zionist.

As Malone's dissertation, this book is extremely well researched and the sources of evidence are varied and credible. However, Malone does not discuss some of the larger aspects of her scholarly research. Mainly, Malone does not discuss how the environment of New Orleans helped shape Heller's career. Malone argues that Heller's public stance on controversial topics put him at odds with his congregation and community. Yet, why was Heller not fired, as would have occurred in other Jewish communities? The answer lies in a comparison of the relationship of the community, synagogues and Rabbi to other communities, such as Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, the largely Quaker roots, which was anti-clerical by nature, put the community at odds with the clergy. The Jewish community in Philadelphia was also anti-clerical. Had Heller been the Rabbi in Philadelphia, he would have been fired. Yet, in New Orleans, Heller is not fired. In fact, his tenure is extensive. Answers to this question are also the answers that would explain why Heller's predecessor was so beloved as well.

There are a few other areas that needed more explanation. Once such area was the relationship between Isaac Mayer Wise and Heller. Such knowledge might establish an extremely close tie between New Orleans and Cincinnati, and that tie has not been adequately completed. Indeed, from the evidence in the dissertation, it would seem quite easy to establish that New Orleans was extremely close to Cincinnati. In addition, another aspect that might warrant further investigation is the Zionist beliefs of Heller. Heller's views of Zionism are ahead of a famous Zionist, Ahad Ha-am, and Heller's negation of the Diaspora stance pre-dates and even contradicts the beliefs of many contemporaries. Further exploration of this matter would shed light on the distinctions that distinguish Southern Jewry and Southern beliefs from the greater Jewish America. Also, Malone discusses with much significance of the dueling identities of Jews in the South. The first is the Jew who lives in a Southern city that adheres to a racially divided social system that supercedes the standard applied to a divided religious community, but is aware that such a system exists. The second identity crisis for American Jews is as Americans in the greater American culture. Thus, the difference between Northern Jews and Southern Jews is the degree in which the South shapes conceptions of Jewish identity. Malone explores these concepts, and her exploration leaves many questions concerning these different identities.

Overall, this is a quite readable biography of a Southern reform Rabbi during the growth and transformation of America and the American Jewish community, touching from the end of Reconstruction in the South through World War I and then on to Zionism. This book promotes the study of American Judaism in the South, and proves that biography is an excellent vehicle as a methodology for examining the issues that confronted the Jews living in the South.
