Women in Mathematics
ASIN: 0313291314 |
Book Description
This volume features substantive biographical essays on 59 women from around the world who have made significant contributions to mathematics from antiquity to the present. Designed for secondary school students and the general public, each profile describes major life events, obstacles faced and overcome, educational and career milestones--including a discussion of mathematical research in non-technical terms--and interests outside of 2 promotics. Although the collection includes historical women, the emphasis is on contemporary mathematicians, many of whom have not been profiled in any previous work. The work also celebrates the contributions of minority women, including 10 African-American, Latina, and Asian mathematicians. Written by practicing mathematicians, teachers and researchers, these profiles give voice to the variety of pathways into mathematics that women have followed and the diversity of areas in which mathematics can work. Many profiles draw on interviews with the subject, and each includes a short list of suggested reading by and about the mathematician. Most mathematicians profiled stress the value, importance, and enjoyment of collaborative research, contradicting the prevailing notion that doing good mathematics requires isolation. This collection provides not only a substantial number of role models for girls interested in a career in mathematics, but also a unique depiction of a field that can offer a lifetime of challenge and enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth reading!.......1998-09-12
This is a very good book, not only informative, but it kept me interested where so many other books on the subjects of math or women mathematicians could be real yawners. It includes lots of information, the biographies are short and don't drag on, and books like this could be very inspirational to young women interested in pursuing careers in math. The book introduces all sorts of women in math, most of whom I was not familiar with before reading it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about math-related careers, the growing importance of women in the field, or is just looking for some good non-fiction to read. It's worth it!

Book Description
This volume features substantive biographical essays on 97 world and American women scientists who have made significant contributions to the life sciences from antiquity to the present, with the emphasis on 20th century women. The essays go beyond the basic facts found in standard biographical dictionaries, however. Developmental influences, obstacles faced and overcome, and the efforts of these women to contribute to their chosen professions in spite of sometimes overwhelming disapproval of the establishment come alive in these portraits. Many of the living scientists profiled contributed interviews and autobiographical statements, which adds a vital and unique element to their profiles. Entries, written by 63 practicing scientists and researchers, explain the scientific work clearly in terms familiar to general readers and high school students. Each entry provides a fact box outlining major life events, including educational and career milestones, and concludes with sources for further reading. Twenty-nine photographs complement the text. Disciplines covered include anatomy, bacteriology, biology, botany, embryology, entomology, genetics, horticulture, medicine, ornithology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and zoology. Subjects were selected on the basis of historical importance and recognition awards such as Blackwell, Lasker and Watermann prizes, Nobel prizes, MacArthur Foundation "Genius" awards, and the National Medal of Science. Seen across time and disciplines, the lives of these dedicated scientists can serve as role models for young women pursuing careers in science.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR BOUNDARY ISSUES
"Jane Adams gets at the heart of human relationships by illuminating the boundaries that create and sustain them. Taking on a subject that everyone talks about but few people really understand, she breaks new psychological ground in this accessible, empathetic, and original book that offers concrete assistance and wise counsel to all who struggle with the central dilemma of being humanbeing both separate and connected, intimate as well as autonomous, without sacrificing the self."
Edward Hallowell, M.D., coauthor of Delivered from Distraction
"Understanding and respecting our own boundaries and others' is at the core of a happy life. Boundary Issues is a terrific journey into our own psychological needs, strengths, and weaknesses. We could all save a lot of therapeutic intervention by reading and following Dr. Adams's observations and suggestions."
Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., author of Love Between Equals: How Peer Marriage Really Works
"All too rarely someone comes along who is able to turn a single phrase into a changed outlook on life. Dr. Jane Adams does that with Boundary Issues. By following Dr. Jane Adams's guidance and helpful exercises, each of us can find the freedom to love, work, negotiate, play, and live on our own terms."
Suzanne Braun Levine, author of Inventing the Rest of Our Lives: Women in Second Adulthood
"I find this book vitally helpful, both personally and in my work as a psychotherapist. Learning to negotiate distance and intimacy is a huge issue for women who think that being joined at the hip is necessary for a relationship to survive."
Colette Dowling, author of The Cinderella Complex and You Mean I Don't Have to Feel This Way?
"With her trademark wit and clarity, Jane Adams pulls at the threads that tie us together and tear us apart. She has translated decades of research into wise and inventive tools. Boundary Issues is the definitive book about finding both intimacy and independence."
Dr. Barbara Mackoff, author of Leadership as a Habit of Mind and Growing a Girl
"Through her prescriptive advice and fascinating and relevant personal stories, Jane Adams helps us understand how to use Boundary Intelligence for happiness and personal growth."
Carole Hyatt, coauthor of When Smart People Fail: Rebuilding Yourself for Success
Download Description
How to heal and strengthen our boundaries to improve our relationships In this groundbreaking, fascinating, and solidly researched book, bestselling author and social psychologist Jane Adams explains the concept of boundary intelligence, which is key in balancing intimacy and autonomy in any relationship. She then shows readers how to manage their psychological boundaries to heal, strengthen, and transform relationships. Using the Boundary Style Questionnaire, presented here for the first time, readers will analyze how and why they behave as they do with the people that matter most, discover how to resolve conflicts, and achieve both the intimacy and autonomy they need. Jane Adams, PhD (Seattle, WA, and New York, NY), has been writing and reporting on personal and professional issues in the lives of women for nearly three decades. A speaker, social psychologist, and personal coach, she is a frequent media commentator who has appeared on Oprah, Good Morning America, the Today show, NPR, and CNN.
Customer Reviews:
Very Disappointed.......2006-03-22
I bought this based on reviews here and at another bookstore. The author uses Kegan's constructive-developmental model as a framework, which is fairly difficult to understand; it also suffers from being based on Piaget's work, which has been shown to be misleading at best. She has merged it with Gardner's multiple intelligences theory (modulo Goleman's Emotional Intelligence) on a very superficial level. She incorporates numerous quizzes, which give the whole book a sort of women's-magazines feel. While there are notes, her sources are out of date, often of questionable merit (Mahler's work has been discredited and Winnicott's work has been shown to be very limited in utility).
So much for theoretical underpinnings and the structure of the work. She includes many interesting stories and anecdotes. These stories show clearly that the audience for the book is assumed to be women. Her commentary is extremely heteronormative, even though she includes anecdotes involving lesbians and gay men. Her treatment of relationships between women and gay men is particularly appalling. She assumes that family life is disrespectful and challenges the reader who does not believe that to try to not engage in emotional trespass for 24 hours, as if that is some impossibility.
All these things I might be able to forgive. But the book doesn't even make much sense. I liked her three parts to boundaries (flexibility, permeability and complexity -- although she occasionally uses variability, which is confusing), but she desploys this analysis in a very rough-and-ready fashion that does not bear close analysis. Even this I could forgive. But her advice in many of the anecdotes is really pretty bad.
Finally, it's a book about boundaries aimed at heterosexual women. Yet at no point does she deal with the topic of sexual advances, by women, towards women, wanted or otherwise. Kind of a big hole, isn't it?
Defining Boundaries of Boundaries.......2006-03-22
In her first book, Jane Adams successfully addressed a specific challenge: grown children who disappoint their parents. This time she chooses a topic that's hard to pin down. Ironically, she needs to draw boundaries around this topic. By generalizing to a wide range of situations, the topic becomes almost too broad to be useful.
The topic has a great deal of relevance. As a career consultant, I find over half my clients have trouble dealing with boundaries. So I was looking forward to the book. I found some new insights but I would have liked to see the author go deeper rather than broader.

Ironically, she needs to draw boundaries around this topic. By generalizing to a wide range of situations, the topic becomes almost too broad to be useful.
On page 35, Adams introduces elements of boundary intelligence. Although BI appears in the book's title, the concept disappears almost immediately. Instead, Adams describes types of boundaries and boundary violations through the use of anecdotes.

On page 35, Adams introduces elements of boundary intelligence. Although BI appears in the book's title, the concept disappears almost immediately. Instead, Adams describes types of boundaries and boundary violations through the use of anecdotes.
The self-help portion of the book comes from the many exercises and assessment tools -- very shaky since they're ad hoc and conversational rather than scientific. Adams offers limited advice. She brings up the old chestnut: "When you do X, I feel..." Contemporary counselors recognize this language will not defuse a confrontation: in fact, so many people have ridiculed this formula it's likely to backfire.
Adams introduces the concept of "boundary personalities," i.e., we differ in boundary permeability and flexibility. But I suspect these personalities can be influenced by situation. Someone may have highly permeable boundaries at home but not at work (or, alas, vice versa).
Adams identifies inner, family and work boundaries. Inner boundaries refer to our abilities to separate rational thinking from emotions. This topic has been researched extensively. Adams refers to the self-regulation literature but I would like to see a much more extensive discussion with reference to scholarly articles.
More important, it's hard to see similarities among inner, work and family boundaries. Each calls for unique strategies so setting boundaries in one arena may not be relevant to another.
Adams seems most at home with family boundaries, where we have the most control. We can set limits. We can say, "Respect my boundaries or leave." We can talk about feelings. These strategies won't work in the workplace.
As a career consultant, I naturally wanted to learn more about workplace boundaries. Instead, Adams offers examples of employees whose boundaries are violated. I've found that people in transition are most subject to boundary violations: they often feel lonely and seek help or companionship inappropriately. The key is to realize when your defenses are down and act accordingly.
Adams rightly notes that we risk a loss of privacy when we file a health insurance claim with an employer. But I believe we should focus on legal and ethical elements of privacy -- I don't see these concerns as boundary issues.
Most important, rather than focusing on our boundary styles, we need to come up with strategies to protect and defend our boundaries at work. The relevant question isn't, "Are my boundaries permeable?" but rather, "How can I maintain a professional relationship with colleagues and customers?"
Bottom line: I enjoyed the book but felt it was trying to be too much and too little: The concept of "boundaries" was stretched to explain situations and challenges beyond what was realistic or helpful. And given the authors PhD credentials we would anticipate more reference to social science research.

Well worth the read!.......2005-12-22
I always thought boundaries were a way of keeping others at a safe distance and out of my personal business. Instead, after reading this book, I learned that boundaries can also be a way to connect with others, and allow greater closeness and intimacy with the people in our lives. In order to do this, we need to cultivate something the author calls "boundary intelligence," which is an intentional management of three aspects of boundaries: their permeability, flexibility, and complexity.
The four elements of Boundary Intelligence are: awareness, insight, intention and action. It makes sense--if someone is stepping all over us, or if we are trespassing on their boundaries, we need first of all to be aware of the transgression, and then have the insight to realize that we need to adjust our boundary's permeability. Then we can form the intention to change and formulate a plan of action to address the boundary transgression.
All of us have different boundary styles, and an interesting quiz in Chapter 3 helps us understand our inner boundaries; those we have with others in our lives; and how their complexity, flexibility, and permeability all impact our dealings with others. I found this very interesting and helpful.
The book had several other quizzes, but they lacked enough explanation for me to make real sense of them. Throughout the book, numerous anecdotes and examples tell of boundaries being trampled on and ignored, all of which further illustrated the necessity of understanding and learning how to successfully negotiate boundaries with the people in our lives.
One area dealt with something the author termed "emotional trespass." This is when "we may not know exactly where our boundaries are, but we know when they've been violated." I can think of innumerable examples of this in my own life, but I never had a way to describe it before.
Armchair Interviews says: Boundary Intelligence will help you navigate your way through all the relationships in your life.
Building Fences--Not Walls.......2005-10-26
This really useful book offers tons of good advice for those of us who find it almost impossible to say no! I learned a lot from the author's suggestions about where to draw the line in the sand. This is one of those self-help books that actually offers help!!
Move Over Dr. Phil.......2005-10-22
Finally someone explains "boundaries" - a lot better than most shrinks do (including Dr. Phil!) This may be the best self-help book I've ever read - I'm buying it for my mother, my best girlfriends, and my 24 year old daughter

Extreme Disappointment.......2007-07-30
In the past year there has been a lot of exciting and interesting work created that combine both knitting and crochet. With the hope of finding inspiring and innovative designs and based solely on the book's description and intriguing cover, I bought this book to fill in an Amazon order and get the free shipping.
I was extremely disappointed. There are 22 "stylish designs" in this book and only 7 patterns are garments. The other patterns are accessories or home decorating and over half of those are simply crocheted flowers slapped on a knitting project or the tired basic granny square worked into one more design.
The knit i-cord dog leash with chain 3 crochet loops around the handle for "trim" is the worst of the book but others come very close. I wish I had been able to scan through this book because it would never have passed my buy test -- are there at least three patterns that I might be interested in or that inspire me? The pattern on the cover of this book was the ONLY one.
WOW!.......2007-03-27
This book is great. The instructions are well wtitten and easy to follow. I am almost finished with the child's 'Cherries and Berries' sweater, it is too cute. My granddaughter is going to love it. Thanks Candi Jensen!!!
Dissapointed!.......2007-03-12
I bought this book because I have a few frustrations as someone who prefers to crochet but is only able to find interesting patterns in knit. Or, the patterns I find lack something...they are too much of the same pattern over and over, no texture or color variations (other than variegated yarn). Plus, both knit and crochet patterns are too grannyish and are not in the least bit exciting.
I got excited when I saw this book, because I thought it would blend textures with knitting and crochet..and possibly make the knitting not as boring by adding a little crochet to it and by adding a little bit of style and femininity. The tank top on the cover created all these expectations because it is cute and feminine.
The book has the tank top, and another pretty and realistic sweater. There is a v-kneck cardigan that is not very flattering. There is one sweater in the book that is pretty and very vintage in an 18th century kind of way, but who would ever wear it. There are two shrugs...are we tired of shrugs yet? And..hello...they're not in style anymore. A couple of crocheted purses...which in a world where your purse is a statement and coach bags are it...who really wants to carry a felted purse with big tacky flowers on it unless you live in mayberry. Girly beaded fingerless gloves that you can wear with your prom dress...yeah right( AND who wears fingerless gloves unless you got them as a gift from a goofy knitting/crocheting relative). A dopey hat and arm warmers. What are arm warmers and who wants or needs them? A cute twenties-style crochet hat with 3 flowers. Some bad scarves that look like you dyed your grandma's table runner with bad colors and tied it around your kneck (attempted suicide?). An opera purse...nothing special. A back-to-school backpack that you will never make and your kid will never use...although it is kinda sweet. A DOG SWEATER...Aren't there enough dogs wearing bad sweaters...didn't God provide them with a coat to begin with? A dog leash...finally a pattern for a dog leash..I've been searching (sarcasm).I didn't pay all this money for this book for dog leash and dog sweater patterns...when I can get 50 on the internet for free. There is a really overly cutesy and girly and boxy little girls sweater. There were some nice household items: lots of nice knitted and crocheted pillows, a pretty afghan that is not that innovative (you could have come up with the design without this pattern) except maybe in the color choices. Elegant placemat and ringholders...yawn( sort of pretty in a granny kinda way but not exciting). And...to top it off, a christmas stocking, yawn....another thing that I can find 50 of on the internet. Thank goodness for one thing...no FUN FUR patterns!!
After I got the book, I immediately shelved it and moved on. Buy it if you can get it really cheap for the few decent patterns, or take a look at it in the library first...I may donate my copy.
For Knitters only.......2007-02-14
Projects require you to know how to knit. I'm sure for knitters this is a nice book. But completely useless to me as just a crocheter. Will keep it in case one of these days I ever learn to knit.
KNITTING LOVES CROCHET pairs up the best of both worlds........2007-01-04
Candi Jensen's projects are designed to highlight the pairing of knitting and crocheting: arts usually kept apart in their own books. From embellishments from the world of crochet to finished sweaters and clothing to knitted products with crochet bands and embellishments incorporated into the design, KNITTING LOVES CROCHET pairs up the best of both worlds.

"A major achievement in compilation and review, beautifully written. . . .This book accomplishes a necessary and admirable goal of bringing a widely dispersed body of knowledge together."

What is maltreatment? How do definitions, causes, consequences, and efforts to combat problems vary across the major ethnic groups within the United States?
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective: Defining, Understanding, and Combating Abuse provides a thought-provoking and informative discussion of cross-cultural issues in family violence in the United States.
The book focuses on family violence from four major ethnic populations of the United States: Native American Indian, African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American. Authors Kathleen Malley-Morrison and Denise A. Hines examine violence in these communities and take an ecological approach to its incidences, correlations, and consequences. The information and cases in
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective are organized within a cognitive-affective-ecological framework, allowing readers to consider the many causes of family violence. The book looks at the different types of family violence including child, spousal, and elder abuse and addresses the broader historical and environmental forces contributing to violence within different communities.
Features and Benefits:
- Real family case studies and "Personal Reflections" boxes from members of various ethnic communities covered in the book stimulate class discussion.
- Each chapter contains frequent mini-summaries of the material presented and "thought questions" that help readers reflect upon the difficult issues being addressed.
- The book includes tables summarizing research on the rate of family violence within major ethnic groups and key terms are highlighted within the text.
- Each chapter opens with provocative quotes or examples and closes with a summary section.
Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective is designed for undergraduate and graduate students taking family violence courses in Family Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Human Services. This book is also a vital resource for professionals and practitioners working with diverse client populations.

Book Description
They would be called upon to lead a nation in one of its darkest hours -- but were they up to the task? He had been the wild, hard-drinking scion of one of America's premier political families. She was the school librarian with a warm smile and a tragic secret of her own. Yet after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, they rose to the challenge: He became the embodiment of America's fighting spirit and she assumed the role of "First Comforter" with effortless grace. Still, the true nature of their relationship has remained a mystery.
Until now. In the style of his #1 New York Times bestsellers The Day Diana Died and The Day John Died, as well as his bestselling books about another President and First Lady, Jack and Jackie and Jackie After Jack, Christopher Andersen draws on important sources -- many speaking here for the first time -- to paint a vivid, sometimes startling, often inspiring portrait of America's First Couple. Among the intriguing insights and stunning revelations:
- Important new information about 9/11 and its aftermath -- including a gripping moment-by-moment account of how the President and First Lady coped as the horrific drama unfolded.
- The true extent of George W.'s drinking problem, the strains it put on his marriage, and the ultimatum that changed his life -- and the course of history.
- Their heartbreaking battle against infertility and how close Laura came to dying in childbirth.
- The early tragedies that shaped them, including the car crash caused by a teenage Laura that took the life of a former boyfriend -- and changed her life forever.
- Laura's surprising behind-the-scenes influence on U.S. policy -- foreign and domestic.
- The pressures of raising headstrong twin daughters in the glare of the media -- and how 9/11 has brought the Bushes and their children closer together than ever before.
George and Laura is a compelling look at their unique partnership, and the courage, grace, and humor that defines it. It is a stirring wartime saga of triumph and tragedy and, above all, a uniquely American love story.

Highly Recommended.......2005-11-15
This book is wonderfully written, very insightful, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who was looking to learn more about the lives of the President and First Lady. I was so enthralled while reading it, I could hardly put it down.
minor error.......2005-06-16
A puzzling minor error: page 42 says "Blacks (in Midland, TX) went to their own schools, not to Sam Houston Elementary. There were separate waiting rooms for them at the courthouse..." However page 46 says "there were no blacks in town then -- I mean none."
Mmmm, tangy.......2004-11-10
The best part of this wonderful tribute to commercial marriage was the sound effects CD. I mean how often do you get to hear Laura and George grunt. I tell you, it gave me the shivers. Then, when I thought it couldn't get any better I found the scratch and sniff section. That was too much. I was beyond redemption at that point. Frankly, I don't know how they are able to sell this gem for so little. I suppose they stiffed the ghost writer. (Do you think it was Lynn Cheney?) Anyway, if you want a presidential grunt and sniff fest for you very own bedroom then this is the book for you. I've literally gotten minutes of pleasure from this book and so has my peeping Tom neighbor, Alonzo, downstairs.
True American Love Story.......2004-07-26
A wonderfully written book, showing that old fashion marriage, love & respect are still alive In America.
The love and respect they have for one another is so evident. Being in the spotlight doesn't stop this beautiful couple from showing the love and respect they have for one another. It shows a book will hold your interest without it having to be filled with sexual thoughts and actions. Loved the book and believe others will as well. Good old fashion love story.
A true and eventful look at a real American marriage.......2004-07-19
I started reading this book on a Friday night and finished it on Saturday. It is such a welcoming look at a real marriage portrayole. It reminded me so much of my husband and myself, who also will be married 27 years this July. My Daughter read it first, brought it to me, now my son and husband are agruing who gets to read it next! Christopher Andersen did a great and explicit job of portraying these two intoxicating, loving, yet determined individuals in this book. Hats off to you. What a great read. I recomment this one at 5 stars!

Book Description
In this collection of fifteen essays, Jewish Latin American writers speak for themselves about their lives, their literary work, their formative experiences, and the Jewish communities in Latin America and the United States. Included are writers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and Venezuela, about half of whom live outside their country of origin. With the exception of Alberto Gerchunoff, arguably the father of Jewish Latin American writing, all the writers are living and writing actively.
King David's Harp is unified by a constant sense of motion. José Kozer and Ilan Stavans, for example, give the impression of being in perpetual motion. Many, including Ariel Dorfman and Alcina Lubitch Domecq, have changed countries, languages, political systems; others, like Ricardo Feierstein and Margo Glantz remain in their country of birth. Most are multilingual. Some, Marjorie Agosín and Alberto Gerchunoff, for example spoke Yiddish as their first language, only to become deeply attached to Spanish later on, or Portuguese, in the case of Moacyr Scliar. All these complex individuals move back and forth among different worlds, in circumstances that could be seen as restrictive, frustrating, and unforgiving. Yet they write with prodigious energy of lives that contain many surprises.
Customer Reviews:
A Book on Experiences of the Marginalized, "Other.".......2003-01-23
This collection of essays is an important work for all minorities who want to introspectively examine their own place in a multicultural society. While the focus is on the Latin American experience, the authors address themes of displacement, longing, belonging, marginalization, prejudice, immigrant- inter-generational conflicts, and change. It also provides insight, and hopefully empathy, on these same topics for those of the established majority culture. The book also raises the questions about the goals of a multi-cultural society, and if assimilation is a worthy goal in the view of the majority and the, "other."
A good book with great historical and political impact.......1999-10-15
This book is a very important piece of literature. It is entertaining as well as historically relevant and informative.
This book takes a look at the lives of the diaspora in Latin America. It's an amazing collection of short stories by some of the most talented writers in Latin America.
They come from different countries and different cultures, but share the thread of being Jewish in a different world. Some are transplanted, some have always lived in Latin America.
This book opened my eyes to the life, the struggles and happinesses of the Jews who live and work in South America. I think everyone should read this book.
The history contained in this book is amazing. Most of the gentiles that I know have no idea about this part of history. We were not taught it in school. Can you imagine fleeing persecution in your homeland, finding yourself in a strange country with strange food, language, and customs, and down the street from you live the war criminals who forced you to flee?
Not all the short stories in this book are a great read, but they are all very important. It's a voice that should be heard!
