Another book that seeks to help the depressed change their brain chemistry without medication, Natural Prozac divides such people into two types. "Satiation" types seek to boost their levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin to promote relaxation, calmness, and a sense of security, and often become uncomfortable in overly arousing situations. "Arousal" types, on the other hand, eat foods and participate in activities that boost norepinephrine and dopamine, neurotransmitters related to alertness, assertiveness, and aggression; such people would rather be anxious than bored. According to Robertson, one of the ways for each of these types of people to battle depression is to act against their instincts: when satiation types raise their "excitement" chemicals and arousal types raise their "calmness" chemicals, their brains come into better balance; while this may make them anxious at first, eventually they become tolerant of the higher levels. Robertson recommends a variety of methods for doing this--through diet, exercise, spiritual practices, and even music (songs by Bach raise serotonin, he says, while Springsteen's "Born to Run" boosts norepinephrine and dopamine). Although some readers may be uncomfortable with being pigeonholed into a category, those who agree that they fit one type or the other will find plenty of advice on what to do next.
Book Description
Scientifically proven and easy to follow, Dr Joel Robertson's groundbreaking lifestyle program makes a significant advance in treating and overcoming depression and its debilitating effects without drugs. With more than 21 million people now using Prozac and other anti-depressants worldwide, this book comprises an enormous breakthrough: an all-natural method anyone can use to regain control of their physical and emotional health.Robertson, an expert in pharmacology and brain chemistry, has been using this method with remarkable success for more than twenty years. His approach uses the body's own natural chemistry to restore the brain's chemical balance and end the dangerous cycle of negative thought patterns and behaviour that cause depression to recur. With detailed instructions on developing a tailored program of diet and exercise, new techniques for understanding and breaking free of negative habits, and targeted exercises for burning up self-destructive chemicals. Natural Prozac gives every depression sufferer a new option.

Prescribe Your Own AntiDepressants and Improve Your Life.......2007-03-15
This book and "Potatoes Not Prozac" changed how I look at food. Learn natural, non-medicinal ways to take care of yourself and improve how you feel and function. Highly recommend this one!
At last.......2006-10-19
In my more than twenty years of dealing with depression, I've tried many strategies - talk therapy, drugs, herbs, psychological spelunking, spiritual practices, and cognitive or goal-setting approaches. I've read dozens of books. Most either talk about brain chemicals from a overwhelmingly clinical perspective (with pharmaceuticals as the answer) or try to pinpoint the root emotional causes (as if to identify them is to solve them) - without offering small remedial steps that seem do-able to a severely depressed person. Robertson's book not only shows the links between our brain chemistry and our life experiences, he offers modifications in diet and habit that can result in rectifying the chemical imbalances.
Frequently when I've read self-help books on the subject, I wind up even more depressed and inert than I started - "Why can't I 'just do it?' What's the matter with me that I can't think more positively, set goals, etc?" The feeling is one of having just been instructed to run a marathon with cement blocks on my feet. In contrast, my mood is already much improved simply having read this book! There is hope - I can choose to eat certain foods, engage in certain activities, and even listen to certain composers daily.
And I don't agree with the negative reviewers that the good doctor is a huckster; he could simply post teasers and success stories on the Internet about the Robertson Mood Optimization Program and charge $199 for it (like everyone else out there who smells a cash cow) instead of keeping this little paperback, with suggestions anyone can follow at home, in print.
Important to read.......2005-08-04
I have long term depression and this book spells out in simple (overly simple?) terms what goes on with ones brain chemistry. I began to pay attention and become more aware of the effects of serotonin on my daily activities. This could be psycho-somatic, but it makes sense to me.
The author points out that brain chemistry changes very rapidly throughout the day depending on food, drugs, excersize, and emotional excitement.
It explains my extreme reaction to and addiction to sugar, and also why I may be 'burning out' my serotonin receptors.
I am only half way through the book and I consider it to be life altering.
Hopeful.....yet a long term battle.......2005-08-04
I cannot picture myself defeating (if that's the right word) my depression in the near future, but I do find books like this helpful as a sort of long term dream to strive for...but even when you know the root causes of your depression maintaining stability is still difficult. Antidepressants are helpful for those times when you really do need them - but they are drugs, and as such they have their negative side. I hope that I can find a natural solution - but fighting the battle is hard - and I admire anyone who has the power to meet the struggle.
The light at the end of the tunnel is finally visible!.......2005-01-18
I have had problems with depression for as long as I can remember, and have been on and off medication for about a decade now. I started doing some research on the long-term effects of these anti-depressants, as well as their continued effectiveness (or lack thereof). When I came across this book, I took a chance when buying it because I was a little bit leery of trying to cure this thing myself. It just seemed like it was out of my hands.
Not only did this book point out the major factors and triggers of depression, but also explained it from different perspectives. I was never clear on the biochemical definition of depression, nor did I ever have any idea that my (bad) diet was contributing. The doctor is very understanding and is not completely against taking medication, though at the same time he offers a plan that does not require medication. He states that over time, being medicated for years and years is not always a good thing for the body.
I am now at half the dosage of Zoloft that I was taking and still feel great. I have changed my eating habits and exercise quite a bit, and when I do go off the wagon and eat junk food (i.e. fast food, cookies, etc.) I feel the difference and feel myself going back into that slump. I have a hope that after being completely off of the medication that I can still maintain a positive attitude towards life without symptoms of depression. He does point out that you cannot get over depression if you do not try to change your behavior and lifestyle because everything you do, say, eat, and think affects the balance of your neurotransmitters. I have learned a lot from this book and it all makes perfect sense to me. I hope others can benefit from it, as well.
Book Description
Richard Bertinet takes you on a journey of development, so that once you have mastered the simple recipes, you can use them to create more innovative and advanced creations. All the breads take less than one hour, with advice on how to make bread in advance, use the freezer and above all, comes the knowledge from a master-baker of how to make the perfect dough.
Customer Reviews:
Making artisan bread baking accesssible ..........2007-05-08
This book/DVD combination is an accessible introduction to artisan bread baking. In my opinion, the DVD alone is worth the price of the book/DVD together. There are more complex books that delve into preferments, retarded fermentation and sourdough, but this is a simple introduction that will inspire bakers to fire up the oven.
The book is broken into five sections, each dealing with a different dough formula: white (that's white as in French baguette, not Wonder Bread), olive, brown, rye and sweet doughs. I have made a few of the formulas and they are simple, sound and delicious. Small chapters also deal with ingredients, technique and loaf shaping. All in all, the book is solid and informative, as well as inspirational. It makes you want to bake.
The bonus DVD that's included shows Richard Bertinet working a batch of white (French) dough. Now whether you REALLY have to smack the dough on the counter is debatable, but the joy that Richard derives from working the dough is certain. The real gem is the forming of the dough into baguettes and rolls. Loaf forming is nearly impossible to learn from a book. The only way to catch on is by standing next to a master at work, but a close second is watching a master do it on video (this DVD). The only other DVD I have seen that deals with detailed loaf shaping is from King Arthur Flour (also recommended highly).
If you do pick up this book and have people over for dinner, make a few of the fougasses (the leafy looking loaf on the cover of the book)!!! On the DVD, Richard provides the details on how to form them. They are simple to make (once you have the dough made), wonderful to eat, and will get you raves from your guests. Trust me on this one.
Great book with a great technique and simple recipes.......2007-03-03
I have cooked quite a few of the breads from this book. The book alone is worth it for the DVD and his technique of working the bread.
All of the recipes I have used have turned out great.
I have recommended this book to more than one person already. Good stuff
SIMPLE YES, TASTY NO!.......2006-11-09
I expected different things from this book than what I received. Bertinet is a frenchman living in England, but instead of bringing his own bread culture to the english, he turned into an Englishman himself. The products in this book are oriented towards the English public. Yes, even the French traditional breads too. There are no baker's formulas not even metric weights! Everything is in English ounces, pounds and fluid ounces. The recipes are all simple both in the good and the bad meaning of the word. That is, they are easy to make, but they are lucking in taste. The reason is that the author uses almost exclusively the straight method for his breads ie mixing the dough, leaving it to double, cutting and shaping it, proofing and baking it, all in the space of about 2 hours! This is just not enough time for the dough to develop its taste. There are only a couple of recipes using the ferment method and none using sourdough. The breads do look good but their taste does not match their looks. I would give this book two stars if it wasn't for the beautiful photos and the DVD( which, by the way lasts only 22 minutes). If you want to bake beautiful looking, great tasting bread I suggest you get hold of "BREAD" by Jeffrey Hamelman or "The taste of bread" by Raymond Calvel.
Wonderful for the beginning baker.......2006-11-04
This book has wonderful pictures that accompany each recipe and all the techniques in it. Not only that, the included DVD, although not a masterpiece of cinematography, really shows how to follow the often complicated steps in bread-making.
Included in the recipes are several which I have never found in any other baking book, like how to make soup bowls out of bread, and a bread shell to stuff with salads. There is also a recipe for 100% whole-wheat bread for those interested, which many books don't touch. All-in-all, a very good book to start off with.
The Need to Knead.......2006-10-25
I have been baking for about 8 years now, on and off, and for the most part eschewed the simple straight doughs in favor of more complex sourdoughs, or poolish starters (making a mini-dough several hours to 1-day before mixing the dough and adding it to improve flavor.)
What so many bread books can't teach you is how to knead. Nancy Silverton's Breads from La Brea Bakery comes closest in explaining the technique, and emphasizing extremely important steps such as resting, to let the flour absorb water on its own. But there is always something lacking in a written description (and this from a writer).
My perennial problem with bread though was an inability to get enough air into the dough to create what I call uneven bubble structure, the sort that the best artisan bakeries achieve. The major contribution of Bertinet's book is that he shows you in the DVD how to trap air in the dough so that you get this uneven structure and an airy bubble-filled crumb. Although the DVD is a bit amateurish (too many shots of his head when we should be looking at the dough), it does show a great kneading tecnique of stretching the dough and trapping air that results in a great crumb. It also shows you what condition the dough should be in during different phases of kneading, such as soupy and gloopy at the outset and satiny and smooth toward the end. (This white dough recipe is also perfect for pizza).
I have been following his white dough recipe (for experienced bakers, he uses 70-percent hydration), with a few adjustments. I think if you just make a straight water, yeast, flour, salt dough with a 1 hour rest, shaping and 1 hour rise, as he suggests, the dough will taste yeasty. So I've been making a flour/yeast/water poolish, letting it develop for about 3 hours before I mix the dough and add it in. Or I make a poolish with sourdough starter which really improves the flavor. Otherwise I follow his instructions. I generally use King Arthur All Purpose Flour, which is close in protein content to European bread flours. Also, I go for a slightly more hydrated dough, adding 2-3 tbs of water in the keading. This is my own preference for a slighly wetter dough, which leads to a looser crumb.
This is the best book I've come across for novice bakers but I look forward to his second book for more experienced ones.

Book Description
Chemical defence by means of toxins poisonous to other organisms, be they animals or plants, is widespread amongst the plant kingdom - including microorganisms as well. This book embraces the analysis of a wide range of plant toxins and this fills a gap in the plant pathology and ecological biochemistry fields. The topics covered include toxic extracellular enzymes, host selective toxins, elicitors, phototoxins, aflatoxins, mycotoxins, and ecotoxic substance tests by pollen germination and growth. The analytical procedures, which are used to evaluate the toxins, are covered in such a way that the reader is able to carry them out mostly solely by following the detailed descriptions.
Customer Reviews:
Actually, pre-talk.......2007-06-14
Generally, this book deals with the development of language from birth to two years of age. Bruner begins by offering two competing theories, one an "impossible empiricist associationism," which covers everything from Saint Augustine to B.F. Skinner, and the other, a "miraculous nativism," introduced by Noam Chomsky. To complement Chomsky's Language Acquisition Device (LAD), Bruner proposes a Language Acquisition Support System (LASS), which helps assure continuity from pre-linguistic to linguistic communication.
After a philosophical discussion, Bruner devotes the remainder of his attention to games, the growth of reference, and the development of request. He concludes that whether or not humans have innate capacities for language, they still have to learn to use their language in a socially acceptable manner. Thus the rationale is established for the LASS, which frames interaction between mother and child in such a way as to help the young speaker master the use of language.
Three salient points emerge from Bruner's study. The first, that pre-linguisitic communication consists of breaking down conversations into units by means of "completives" uttered by the mother, is intrinsically weak. If the child is taught that these completives segment actions, and subsequent sentences are built of a subject and an action-based predicate, then the analysis that Bruner suggests must exist above the sentence level, not below it.
Secondly, Bruner asserts that young mothers focus on action units that have the structure Agent - Action - Patient - Beneficiary, e.g., "Mommy is putting Doggy outside so Baby can sleep." However Bruner's argument does not allow for different word orders in different languages.
Thirdly, Bruner supposes that the management of joint attention leads to the development of predication. Here Bruner does not provide sufficient details to convince us of his arguments. He implies throughout that the child imitates the parent, but a few simple observations will show that in many cases, the opposite is true: it is the adult, in fact, who imitates the child.
Bruner gets a lot of mileage (perhaps stretching things a bit too thin) out of two longitudinal studies of young children in England. One of these was cut short when the child's family moved away. Despite the occasional lapse into a kind of Oxbridge cynicism, however, Bruner's ideas come across with a certain freshness, welcome diversions from the field of language acquisition studies.
A Fine, But Flawed, Study Of Learning Useful Language.......2005-11-03
Bruner's book will offer much information on how children should learn language so as to promote their ownership of it as a communcable tool even though he fails to argue using multicultural eyes.
Toward the end, he begins to get bogged down in complex theories and academic langauge thus making the book (like many of his books) inaccessible to classroom teachers.
He apparently wrote the first half to all professionals while writing the rest of the book to a higher education audience.

In this funny, razor-edged memoir, Mary Karr, a prize-winning poet and critic, looks back at her upbringing in a swampy East Texas refinery town with a volatile, defiantly loving family. She recalls her painter mother, seven times married, whose outlaw spirit could tip into psychosis; a fist-swinging father who spun tales with his cronies--dubbed the Liars' Club; and a neighborhood rape when she was eight. An inheritance was squandered, endless bottles emptied, and guns leveled at the deserving and undeserving. With a raw authenticity stripped of self-pity and a poet's eye for the lyrical detail, Karr shows us a "terrific family of liars and drunks ... redeemed by a slow unearthing of truth."
Book Description
When it was published in 1995, Mary Karr's The Liars' Club took the world by storm and raised the art of the memoir to an entirely new level, as well as bringing about a dramatic revival of the form. Karr's comic childhood in an east Texas oil town brings us characters as darkly hilarious as any of J. D. Salinger'sa hard-drinking daddy, a sister who can talk down the sheriff at twelve, and an oft-married mother whose accumulated secrets threaten to destroy them all. Now with a new introduction that discusses her memoir's impact on her family, this unsentimental and profoundly moving account of an apocalyptic childhood is as funny, lively, and un-put-downable (USA Today) today as it ever was.

Excellent Read.......2007-08-30
I read it over a three-day period and I hated for it to end. Great story and very well composed. Very glad I read it.
Give this book a chance.........2007-08-29
I started this book and I wasn't sure at first what I was getting into but as I got into it I couldn't put it down! A very good book..compared to her second one that I wouldn't recommend to anyone!!
Well-written but depressing.......2007-06-19
This book is well-written and very hard to put down. However, I did not find this book humorous in the least. The awful incidents of sexual abuse the narrator faced left me feeling depressed for a week. Also, the "down home Texas" prose got pretty corny after the first few pages.
Slow start to an entertaining train wreck.......2007-06-13
The Liars Club is a childhood memoir that entertains even while making you feel like you are watching a train wreck. The book starts out a bit slow, which surprised me given its popularity. Karr begins the book in the middle of a pivotal moment of violence - yet somehow doesn't manage to convey any of the suspense of the incident which comes much later in the book when she fully illuminates the scene. If the book wasn't so critically acclaimed, and a friend hadn't recommended it to me as being "hilarious", I might very well have set it down and never picked it back up. It takes slogging through a few chapters of dull family history (or rather the author talking about what she doesn't know about her parents) to get to the meat of the story - which is the delightful child character who embodies the book. The childhood Karr is a feisty and brilliant girl navigating the working class world of Texas. With sarcasm and resilience Karr and her older sister Lecia survive the alcoholism of both parents, and her mother's downward spiral into complete madness. It is her mother's intelligence, and counter-culture creativity that makes her an interesting drunk, rather than a one dimensional monster. Karr's relationship with her Father, from which the book title comes, is less interesting. Karr is captivated as a child by her father's story telling. Her father was not an educated man, and his stories - the central unifying thread of the memoir - come off as ignorant as opposed to charming. Dysfunctional yet creative and intelligent people can be entertaining to read about. Karr's dad isn't one of them. Luckily, most of the book features Karr's story, and she is gifted with the ability to bring honesty, humor and enlightenment to a childhood scarred by neglect, sexual abuse, and a mentally ill mother.
Good Book.......2007-06-13
Wow, what a life this was to read about! It held my interest throughout and didn't disappoint me at the end. Wonderful writing. Glad I got it.

Product Description
This memoir of growing up poor in a Texas refinery town is from a time long gone but from a place that feels eternally rural south. A handful of the town's workers gather regularly to drink salted beer and spin tall-tales. They're the Liar's Club. And to the girl whose father is the club's undisputed champion, they exude a glamour that lifts her from ordinary life. But there are other lies, darker, mmore hidden. A mad, puritanical grandmother; a vast inheritance squandered in a single year; endless emptied bottles; and the abuses inflicted on an eight-year-old girl -- these are the demons that the author must exorcise. Felled with wit and stripped of any self-pity, THE LIAR'CLUB is a contemporary classic. (from the jacket).

Book Description
A Match Made in Hell is the award-winning memoir of shy Jewish teenager Moniek (Morris) Goldner joining forces with hardened Polish criminal Jan Kopec to survive in Nazi-occupied Poland. First trained as Kopek’s accomplice in robberies and black market activities, the orphaned Goldner eventually becomes an accomplished saboteur of the Nazi war effort for local partisan groups. Through it all, Goldner and Kopec forge a remarkable friendship and co-dependency born of need and desperation in a hellish time and place.
Customer Reviews:
A Fine Match.......2005-09-02
It was indeed a fine match that paired Morris/Moishe/Moniek Goldner, a man with a compelling story to be told, with Larry Stillman, a man who can really tell a story. I have read many books and stories on the Holocaust and its survivors, many by the most celebrated authors in the world. This book compares favorably to the best of them by the best and most famous of these authors.
Everything about Morris is amazing and told with clarity and great style by Mr. Stillman. It is the kind of book you will stay up all night in order to finish. He has clearly done his research carefully to give a flow and continuity to what must have been somewhat disjointed and random series of incidents remembered by Mr. Goldner.
Buy this book for yourself and enjoy the pleasure of sharing it with your dearest friends.
Comments by Hobie Morris.......2004-03-23
Of all the fascinating personal stories coming out of WW II that I've read, A MATCH MADE IN HELL is unquestionably at the top of my list. It's a gripping, nail biting true account of a notorious Polish outlaw and a young Jewish man who is determined to survive long enough to avenge the horrible death of his family at the hands of the Nazi occupiers. Author Larry Stillman has done a magnificent job in researching and writing this book. The young Jewish man survived the war, came to the US and now lives in the Chicago area. A must read.
A powerful, unusual, and vividly memorable story.......2003-12-12
A Match Made In Hell: The Jewish Boy And The Polish Outlaw Who Defied The Nazis is the true story of sixteen year old Moniek Goldner and Polish outlaw Jan Kopec. The two were brought together by chance during the darkest days of World War II and formed a most unlikely partnership. Moniek began as an accomplice to robbery and black market trading, but soon learned enough to join a resistance group -- and that made it possible for him to commit acts of sabotage and directly fight against the Nazis. An important contribution a particular aspect of the struggle against the Nazi holocaust, A Match Made In Hell is a powerful, unusual, and vividly memorable story of desperation in murderous times.
Will be enjoyed by men and women readers.......2003-10-21
This book not only appeals to people who enjoy an action packed story, but also to those interested in issues of morality, personal development, survival, religion, and WWII history. A great book discussion pick!
